I had a favorite knitted T-shirt, but I completely grew out of it, so I decided to use it for a pillowcase on a sofa cushion. The idea lay in bed and waited for inspiration, until I saw a photo of an interesting pillow made of fabric, combined with a knitted insert.

And so my new pillow was born. How to make a pillow from an old T-shirt, I'll tell you now.

How to make yarn from knitted t-shirts

For knitting or weaving rugs and other products from old T-shirts, we need to make yarn from them.

T-shirt yarn is essentially ribbons cut from it, the width of which is 10-15 mm and does not have to be even and the same along the entire length, so you don’t need to measure and draw anything.

You just need to cut the ribbons from the T-shirt, moving in a spiral.

How to do it better and more conveniently, you can see in the presented video tutorial from Marina Ryabova:

We carefully wind the cut ribbons freely into skeins, without pulling the yarn, which already tends to stretch.

We connect short pieces of ribbons together in the following way.

We make small holes at the ends of two ribbons.
We pass one tape through a hole on the second tape.
We insert the opposite end (without a hole) of the second tape into the hole of the first tape and tighten the yarn.

To be honest, I don’t really like this method, because holes still remain here. When crocheting rugs, such a connection can still be used, but for more elegant products, it is better to sew yarn with a needle and thread to match the yarn. And in the process of knitting, it will only be possible to sew ribbons from yarn.

The ends of the tapes superimposed on each other should be sewn neatly along the edges in a straightened form. Then the tape will shrink and the seams will remain inside it.

Bags from old T-shirts

Beautiful bags can be crocheted from yarn cut from old T-shirts of different colors.

And there is another interesting way to create a creative summer beach or shopping bag.

To do this, we need a ready-made basket, which we use for household needs.

We cut the yarn from T-shirts into small strips of the same size and tie each one by inserting it into the holes of the basket, we simply wrap the handle with ribbons.

Such rugs are light, soft, wash well, and the yarn is budget compared to an expensive cord.

And you can knit rugs not only round, but also in any other shape, even in the form of napkins.

Crochet rugs

Since the yarn from old T-shirts is quite thick, the size of the hook for knitting rugs should be about 8-10.

We connect two ribbons: we sew one in the center of the other (see photo).

We got three ends, on which we will weave a long braid.

Then we lay the braid in a spiral in a circle, at the same time sewing it with a zigzag on a typewriter, or with blind stitches by hand.

The second way. Weaving a rectangular rug on a frame

Here we need an additional device - a frame.

We pull vertical strong threads on it or the same ribbons from old T-shirts.

And then we weave ribbons between them horizontally.

The third way. Round rug on hoop

Weaving is similar to making a rug on a frame. But only a round frame is probably problematic. Craftswomen came up with the idea of using a hoop instead.

Additionally, you need to cut a circle out of cardboard, draw diagonals on it closer to each other, cut the circle diagonally from the edge of the circle and in the center.

Then you should place a cardboard circle in the center of the hoop and pull the threads, pulling them through the cuts and through the center, and attaching to the hoop.

And then ribbons from old T-shirts are woven between the stretched threads.

In my opinion, a laborious process, but for information you need to mention it, maybe someone will need to weave a rug in such a creative way.

Mats on the grid

Even fluffy rugs can be made from old T-shirts.

These rugs are usually made on a construction or garden grid.

The hook in this method of creating rugs is used only as an auxiliary tool for pulling up the yarn.

Bargello style rugs

Here we come to the last version of rugs from old T-shirts, which I like the most, and the idea is relatively new.

This method is a beautiful bargello embroidery. But, if delicate work on embroidering pillows, tablecloths and other elegant things requires special skill and a lot of time, then embroidering, or rather pulling thick knitted yarn through the mesh, is much easier.

To fix the ends of the tapes along the edges of the mesh, double-sided tape is used.

Cut out the front and back pieces with minimal seam allowances. Connect them with pins. Sew on a zigzag machine. In this case, it is better to set a small step with a large stitch.

From the remaining strips of fabric with a side seam, sew a belt. If the T-shirt was quite long, then you will get a belt with one seam connecting it into a ring. Otherwise, you need to take two side strips, cut out a pair of identical parts from them ½ waist long and sew them together. Next, you need to connect the belt with the skirt with the same zigzag. Since the hem of the skirt is the bottom edge of the T-shirt, it does not need processing. If the belt does not fit snugly, then you can thread an elastic band of a suitable color and width into it.

Pillows

What can be done from an old white t-shirt

Such an ordinary wardrobe item can be turned into a very original summer blouse. For this you need:

cut off the bottom edge of the T-shirt so that it reaches the waist;
make a deep neckline on the back;
cut long stripes from excess parts of the T-shirt and sew straps out of them;
process the bottom edge of the product;
sew one shoulder strap horizontally at the back, retreating 2 cm down from the shoulder seams;
measure and cut 4 straps of different lengths, each should be 8-10 cm less than the previous one;
sew them in a semicircle to the "crossbar", with an indent of 2 cm on each side.

Blouses with lace

You will probably be surprised when you learn that you can make very beautiful feminine tunics from old T-shirts with only a few meters of wide lace at hand.

We offer two options:

1. Vertical stripes are cut from both sides of the T-shirt along the entire length, stepping back from the side seams to a distance equal to the width of the lace. The result should be something like a poncho. A piece of wide lace braid is sewn along the edge of the entire cut on the right side. Do the same on the left. Leaving a place for the sleeves, connect the parts with side seams from the wrong side or from the outside, stepping back 3-4 cm from the edge. In the latter case, you can arrange ruffles on the sides, if you slightly stretch the thread and pick up the lace.

2. Unzip the shoulder seam of the T-shirt and cut the sleeve along the top fold. Align the top of the front half in a straight line. Sew one strip of lace to the cut of the sleeves. As a result, they should become wider. Lace is sewn along the upper edge of the blouse so that a “boat” is obtained. If there is a desire, and the T-shirt is long, a drawstring is made around the waist and a braid is threaded there.
