The tradition of putting gifts in socks dates back to the 4th century. It all started with one good-natured and just person. It was Saint Nicholas.
Little information has been preserved about Saint Nicholas as a historical person. It is known that he came from a wealthy family, was left without parents early and received a large inheritance. During his lifetime, he served as Archbishop of Myra in Lycia.
There are many legends about St. Nicholas. He was distinguished by kindness and love for his neighbor. For his great deeds and miracles, Saint Nicholas was nicknamed the Wonderworker. In Christian culture, Nikolai is revered as the patron saint of sailors and protector of children.

The Legend of St. Nicholas

Saint Nicholas was distinguished by his generous deeds and helped the poor in every possible way. One of the many legends tells us about a noble family in a difficult situation. The head of the family went bankrupt and decided to marry his three daughters to rich, but unloved suitors. Hearing about this, Nikola tossed a bag of gold coins out the window to his eldest daughter. The money found was enough for a magnificent and cheerful wedding. The middle daughter received the same gift. But when the wedding day of the youngest of the sisters approached, the curious father locked the house and began to look out for the secret patron. Then Nikola decided to outwit him. He climbed onto the roof of the house and threw his golden present down the chimney. By coincidence, the gold ones fell right into the sock hanging on the fireplace.

From this legend, the custom was born to put gifts in Christmas socks and stockings hung by the fireplace. This unusual tradition is practiced in many cultures around the world. The British and Irish are the most famous fans of leaving Christmas gifts in stockings and socks, and it is also common in Europe and North America.

The image of St. Nicholas is covered with legends and myths, and it is he who is the prototype of many folklore characters around the world: in America it is Santa Claus, in England it is Father Christmas, in Italy it is Babbo Natale. All of them delight their wards with gifts and sweets left in Christmas socks and stockings.
It is worth noting that newfangled trends have appeared in our culture. People often do not limit themselves to gifts under the tree, but put them in Christmas stockings and socks, sometimes holiday shoes or boots.

Of course, Christmas trappings are an integral part of the New Year holidays. These are accessories that create home comfort and the atmosphere of the whole holiday. On the one hand, this is an original home decoration, because Christmas stockings and socks are placed over the fireplace or hung on the wall. On the other hand, they can serve as a unique packaging for your gifts. On New Year's Eve, our Santa Claus brings sweets and gifts. To please children and adults, you can offer him to leave the gifts in socks. There should be one for each family member.

How to sew holiday socks

You can get Christmas socks, but making them yourself is much more fun. It will not take much of your time and effort. Even young needlewomen can sew a festive decoration: half an hour of the time spent and unique packaging for your gifts are ready.
In specialized stores you will find a wide selection of fabrics. You can also give a second life to the things you are tired of. Maybe you have an unnecessary woolen blanket or fleece shirt in your closet. For the lining, you can use the same fabric or choose a thinner one.
The sock pattern is easy to draw and you can do it yourself. First of all, you should decide on the size. To give an unusual look to your product, you can make a pointed sock, then it will look like a boot. A bell or bell on the toe of the product will look funny.
For sewing holiday socks you will need:

  • woolen fabric (it all depends on the size of the product),
  • lining fabric,
  • threads,
  • scissors,
  • pins and a needle,
  • sewing machine,
  • iron,
  • pattern of the product.

Sewing holiday socks

The first step is to make patterns for four parts: two main and two for the lining. It should be borne in mind that each pair is cut out in a mirror image. Fold the fabric in half and you have two pieces at once, or just turn the template over. Do not forget about a small seam allowance.

For the loop, you need a strip of main fabric measuring 18x8 cm.

Make cuts in the front of the lining, alternating every one to two centimeters. This is done so that the seam in the finished product is even. Be careful not to damage the seam, then turn the garment inside out and iron from the outside.

To keep the lining in place and not bump, trim off excess fabric half a centimeter from the seam.

Let's prepare a sock loop. Fold a strip of fabric in half, step back a centimeter from the edge and sew on the sewing machine. Turn right side out and iron the seam. Pin the loop to the body.

Hanging New Year's (Christmas) socks by the fireplace on the eve of the winter holidays is a tradition, albeit not Russian, but so cute! Therefore, if your children liked the Christmas sock as much as mine, we take the fabric and thread with a needle and get down to business! The degree of a child's participation in joint creativity can be easily determined by his age and skills: if he knows how to handle scissors, he can cut out a blank, if he has learned / learned how to use a needle, he can do sewing, and if he can only watch for now, then entrust the kid with the task of giving you details , threads and so on. Well, let's try to make a New Year's sock for gifts with our own hands.

New Year's sock: pattern and necessary materials

You will need the following materials:

  • a piece of red fabric (approximately 1 m by 1 m, in this case - gabardine);
  • fabric of any color for lining (I have lining silk);
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • cardboard;
  • a piece of green felt (usually sold in A4 sheets, one sheet is enough);
  • decor (we have 2 bells, ribbons, beads);
  • a small piece of thin elastic band;
  • scissors.

To begin with, we draw on the cardboard the initial pattern of our sock and cut it out.

Then, according to the resulting pattern, we make two patterns from padding polyester, gabardine and lining silk. You should get six identical templates, two each from the same material.

How to sew a New Year's (Christmas) sock: stages of work

Now we take one pattern of each type and put them together.


This is one side of our future sock. We outline and sew on a typewriter or by hand. We do the same with the rest of the patterns. Then we sew both sides on the wrong side and turn them inside out.

Now we take felt and cut out two small strips along the width of the neck of the sock for the sides (we got 15 cm long and 4 cm wide). Sew them carefully with one edge inside the sock. So you get a sock with a lapel. Pieces of fur, if available, can be used instead of felt.

The sock for New Year's gifts is almost ready. You can decorate it and sew on a loop.

From the remnants of felt, cut out traditional Christmas holly leaves (2-4 pieces) and sew them in the middle of the sock.

Then we fold the checkered ribbon with a bow and fix it on the leaves, and on top you can attach a ready-made red or white bow. The composition will be completed with a pair of bells and silver beads.

To sew a New Year's sock from a sweater, you will need:

  • old sweaters;
  • sock pattern;
  • thick fabric (linen or decorative sacking);
  • threads;
  • scissors.

How to sew a DIY Christmas sock for gifts

1. Choose those sweaters that you don't mind cutting. It is from them that you will sew a Christmas sock for gifts.

2. Print the sock template on paper, cut it out and transfer the outline to heavyweight fabric.

4. Cut the sweaters into strips 5-7 cm wide. It is best to use a circular cutter and a ruler to make the strips even.

5. If you decide to use several sweaters, you should end up with many stripes, different in color and texture.

6. Using a thick fabric base for your New Year's sock, line the strips over it to create the type of sock you like. Combine sweater stripes of different patterns, texture and density.

7. Sew each sweater strip together, leaving only the part that will connect to the heel untouched.

8. Cut a triangle from an unwanted piece of sweater that fits in the heel.

9. Sew the heel first to the top strip and then to the bottom. Then sew an extra zigzag stitch on EACH seam to prevent pilling.

10. On the front side of the resulting combination of knitted strips, pin the base of thick fabric with pins.

11. Sew the thick fabric back to the front of the perimeter strips without touching the gift entrance.

12. Trim off any excess from the Christmas sock you've almost sewn to reveal the full shape of the sock.

13. Make a few tiny cuts along the inside curve of the sock to make the seam more beautiful when you twist the sock.

14. Sew a zigzag stitch around all edges of the sock.

15. Flip the Christmas sock with the knitted side facing you.

16. Save the neckline or elastic (bottom) of the sweater to use on the top of your Christmas sock. Place this section right side down at the top edge of the sock and sew to it immediately. Sew only on top, without touching the sides. The elastic should be 6 millimeters longer than the width of the bootleg on each side.

17. Sew the sides together and zigzag these seams.

18. Also zig-zag the seam where you sewed the cuffs to the top edge of the Christmas sock. Turn the sock right-side out.

19. For the eyelet to hang the Christmas sock, cut a 5x15 cm strip from the sweater.

20. Fold the longitudinal sides of the sweater strip together and sew lengthwise. Seam with a zigzag stitch.

21. Turn right side out.

22. Fold in an arch and sew to the back of the sock from the inside while lifting the cuffs. This forms a loop.

23. The Christmas sock is ready!

If you have enough strips of sweaters, you can sew New Year's socks for each family member. It will take you less and less time to create each new sock.

One of my favorite attributes of the New Year that came to us from the West is New Year's socks. There is nothing easier and better than falling asleep when the socks are empty and waking up to that magical moment when the socks are full. So, given my love for this tradition, it was a small oversight on my part not to make socks for myself and for my children. I'm going to make a personalized sock, i.e. with the initials of the recipient of the gift.

So if you're craving a matching set for yourself too, here's how to make felt socks. It's actually very simple and you don't need to use a sewing machine - in fact, you can sew it all by hand.

So, you will need:

  • felt in two or more colors (you will need a piece of approximately 18 by 18 inches for one sock);
  • scissors;
  • aerosol glue;
  • needles and threads, or a sewing machine;

Let's start:

1. Make a template or stencil for your socks. I used my sock based on my ideal sock shape and then cut out a template from cardboard. Not sure where to start? Use an old sock as a template and scale it up proportionally to the size you want.

2. Using a stencil, circle and cut out two sock shapes from the felt. Set aside.

3. To make a monogram, choose a font you like and print the desired letter at a large size.

4. Carefully cut it out of the paper.

5. Apply glue to the front of the letter. Lay face down on the back of the piece of felt.

6. Carefully cut around the paper letter. Remove the paper letter and any bumps and jagged edges you see on the felt letter.

7. Attach the felt letter to a piece of felt of the desired background or outline color. Sew a letter to the background. I prefer to do this step by hand, but you can do it with your sewing machine too.

8. Cut out the letter you just sewn to the background, making sure to leave the desired outline width. I left a very narrow red outline - but you can leave it much thicker.

9. Pin the finished letter to the front of the sock. Sew a few stitches around it.

10. After the letter is attached to the front of the sock, it's time to sew! Pin the two sides of the sock together with the right sides facing out.

11. Sew a few stitches around the outside of the sock, leaving seam allowances. Make sure to leave the top edge open.

12. To make a hanging loop, cut a strip of felt of the desired color. Attach firmly to the top corner of your sock.

That's all! Your very own Christmas felt sock is ready and ready to be filled with a variety of sweets!

  • wide bright fabric for socks - 50x115 cm;
  • fabric for the cuff and outer side - about 1 meter;
  • wool - 50 cm;
  • pom-poms;
  • threads;
  • transparent ruler;

  • tailor's needles.

Cut out the details of the New Year's sock

So, to sew a DIY Christmas sock for gifts, download and print template 1, 2, 3 and 4. Cut out the details along the solid line. Attach to the fabric and cut out four pieces: two sock pieces and two cuffs. Repeat with lining fabric. Cut two pieces of the sock out of the batting. Cut the cuffs out of the fabric for them.

Sewing details

Fold together one piece of the sock, lining, and batting. Fasten the parts with needles. Repeat with other parts to create a second set. Sew along all edges of the two sets of fabrics.

Sew a sock

You can sew the parts in the simplest way: fold the parts together with the right sides and sew along all the edges except the top, and then turn them out to the right side. The edge can be finished with a zigzag stitch. But we will be using a French stitch. Fold the wrong sides together and sew along all edges except the top. Carefully cut the seam allowances with scissors. Cut the heel as shown in the photo. Turn the stocking over to the wrong side and sew on the sewing machine, above the first seam. You have packed the first seam. Turn the sock right over and smooth it out.

Sew on the pompom

Cut the pom-pom attachment to 24.5 cm and 29.5 cm. Place the two pom-poms and a loop on the inside of the stocking at the back side seam as shown in the photo. Sew on a sewing machine.

We sew cuffs

Take two cuff pieces and two cuff liners. Fold the two outer pieces together and sew along the sides with a sewing machine. Repeat with lining. Press and open the seams. Slide the cuff pad to the inside of the outside of the cuff. Sew along the bottom edge of the cuff. Press the edges and insert the cuffs into the stocking as shown in the diagram. Sew around the top edge of the Christmas sock. Turn the cuffs outward and iron the seams. Fold the pom-poms to the front and knot. DIY Christmas sock for gifts is ready!
