The nuances of using decoupage technique to decorate flower pots. Easter decor. Decoupage flower pot

Decoupage is a very interesting and exciting activity, it is not difficult to learn it at all. Before proceeding with the design of furniture or appliances, we advise you to practice on things that are not so a pity to spoil. One of the starting points in the world of napkin decor can be flower pots. Plastic options do not have a large area and are relatively inexpensive, therefore, such plant houses are a great option for beginners. Carefully planted in a pot, decorated with your own hands, the plant will be a great gift for family and friends.

Indoor plants decorate almost every apartment, they complement the interior and saturate the air with oxygen. It happens that the design of the room has changed, and the flower pots have remained old and no longer fit into the interior. It is often undesirable to transplant plants, and you don’t want to spend money on buying new flower containers, so decoupage decoration comes to the rescue, which is the art of sticking drawings and ornaments on objects.

What tools will be required for decoupage of pots:

  • Ceramic or plastic flower pot;
  • Decoupage glue or PVA;
  • Acrylic primer or white acrylic paint;
  • Acrylic paints of different colors;
  • Fine-grained sandpaper;
  • Thin and wide soft brushes for applying paint and finishing elements;
  • Hard flat brush for gluing decorative elements;
  • Sponge for washing dishes;
  • Stationery scissors;
  • File;
  • Napkins, decoupage cards and beautiful pieces of fabric;
  • Additional decor in the form of beads, rhinestones, twine and ribbons.

At the moment, multilayer napkins are most often used to decorate products using decoupage technique, they are not expensive and have a very diverse and interesting design. They can be purchased both in a specialty store and in the department of food products for the kitchen. There are also decoupage cards on sale, they have one layer and are often printed on the thinnest rice paper, so no additional actions are required with them.

Clay pots: decoupage

Clay pots are more expensive and look nobler than their plastic counterparts, but over time, the paint on them can peel off, which does not affect their appearance in the most favorable way. If you don’t want to throw out such a “house” for flowers, you can always repaint it and decorate it with napkin pictures.

Master class on decorating clay pots with decoupage:

  1. Wash the pot in a detergent solution with hot water. Leave it to air dry.
  2. After drying, the workpiece should be thoroughly cleaned with sandpaper. It is better to do this dirty work in the open air, protecting the airways with a medical mask.
  3. Wash the pot and saucer again under running water using the product and leave it to dry completely.
  4. Prime the surface of the pot and saucer with a dishwashing sponge and acrylic primer.
  5. After the primer dries, apply a coat of milk-colored paint or any other shade suitable for the interior.
  6. Cut off the pattern from the napkin with which you are going to decorate the pot. Separate the top layer with the pattern.
  7. Put a file on the bottom of a deep plate, place a napkin on it with the ornament face down and pour some warm water.
  8. Lubricate the pot with a small amount of glue in the place where the pattern will be located, and, having wet the excess liquid from the picture, press the file to the pot. Remove the file so that the ornament is glued to the pot.
  9. Using a brush or a dry cloth, flatten the picture, removing air bubbles that have accumulated under it, and apply an additional layer of glue.
  10. Decorate the borders of the picture with paint of the same color in which the pot was painted.
  11. Apply several layers of acrylic varnish to the surface of the pot.

You can easily give a new life to a peeling pot using the napkin technique. Subject to all points, such a clay product will serve you for many years.

Decoupage plastic pots

If you bought a plastic pot, and came to the conclusion that it does not have a very attractive appearance, then decoupage decoration will save you.

Such small pots are not very expensive, which means that you can train on them before decorating more voluminous and valuable items.

With proper decoration, you can make a clay container for flowers that looks like a clay pot.

We decorate a plastic planter:

  1. We rub the surface of the pot and pan with coarse sandpaper. This is necessary for better adhesion of paint to plastic.
  2. We cover the pot with a white primer in two layers and leave to dry completely.
  3. On top we apply a layer of paint that will peek out of the cracks formed due to the craquelure varnish.
  4. Now you can apply a layer of paint of a different color.
  5. We cover the not completely dried paint with craquelure varnish.
  6. We dry the pot with a hairdryer and watch the paint crack.
  7. We separate the top layer with the desired ornament from the napkin.
  8. We soak the napkin in a deep plate, first putting it on the file face down. We transfer the motif to the product and cover it with a layer of glue, straightening it with a hard brush.
  9. We cover the pot with several layers of decoupage varnish.

By carefully completing all the steps described, you will get a beautiful flower pot with the effect of antiquity.

Necessary materials for creativity

To work in the decoupage technique, a set of certain tools and materials is required. When decorating flower pots, the planters themselves are needed, which can be plastic or ceramic. The pattern on the front side is obtained by gluing napkins, drawings from decoupage cards or applying acrylic paint.

Basically, paint, glue, varnish will be required for work. It is a good idea to use a primer before painting to enhance the adhesion of the decor to the surface of the pots. Glue can be used specially designed for decoupage, stationery PVA can be diluted with water in a ratio of 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3.

You can achieve the effect of old cracked paint when using craquelure products. On sale you can find such varnishes: Creall Crackle, Decola, IDEA, Maimeri and others. These compositions can be single-phase and two-phase. In general, the essence lies in applying the product on the craquelure, the appearance of cracks and further drying. Using pastels or oil paints, carefully fill in the cracks.

To preserve the work for a long time, it is covered with a covering layer of varnish. For these purposes, you can use a variety of tools with a matte or glossy sheen. It is worth paying special attention to the fact that some varnishes are afraid of prolonged exposure to moisture. When decoupage flower pots, this important point must be taken into account, since water often accumulates in pallets, which can damage the decorative layer.

The main stages of decoupage flower pots

The basic scheme of actions for decoupage of flower pots consists of the following steps:

  • surface preparation (removal of labels, stickers, degreasing, applying a layer of soil);
  • covering with a covering layer of paint (acrylic options are good);
  • image preparation (cutting out the motif, separating the top layer of the napkin);
  • gluing the image to the front side of the cache-pot;
  • other methods of decoration (craquelure, gluing rhinestones, stones, shells, twine, etc.);
  • protective layer of varnish.

All actions in the decoupage technique are performed in a certain sequence

The decoupage technique is quite simple. It is necessary to sequentially perform some work: 1 - prepare the workpiece, 2 - pick up an interesting napkin, 3 - cut out the required number of patterns, 4 - separate the top layer, 5 - stick the patterns on the workpiece, 6 - dry the product. After these stages, you can proceed to further decor or leave it as it is, covering it with a layer of protective varnish.

The work can take several days, depending on the speed of drying materials: glue, varnish. Estimated time, as a rule, is indicated on the packaging of the product. It is convenient to apply materials with brushes with different numbers, rollers, sponges. Their quality should be checked in advance, since it is unpleasant when the villi remain on the painted surface. Easy to use synthetic brushes.

A top coat of paint is applied to the surface of the pots to create a more interesting backdrop for the pictures. Acrylic products Idea, Gamma and others have proven themselves perfectly. These paints dry fairly quickly. After that, you can start applying the napkin. To begin with, the surface is covered with a layer of glue and a napkin is carefully applied, leveling all its sections. This work does not tolerate haste, but even if a small marriage has formed, for example, the napkin is torn in some place, then its edges are carefully connected and allowed to dry. The image can be applied to a dry pot, and then glue is applied.

A zealous hostess has a use for any thing! A well-worn teapot for her is not trash, but an ideal pot for outdoor flowers. Well, the decoupage technique will help give it a designer bow!

A variety of ideas for decorating flower pots using decoupage technique

Even very young craftswomen can do decoupage of pots, but everyone can find themselves in this business. Using such a fairly simple technique, you can transform boring planters and make real works of art out of them. All that is required is knowledge of the basics and the desire to learn. With imagination, you can create really wonderful products that will please the eye for a long time.

You can decorate flower pots in different ways. A wide variety of materials are now available to make this process simple and fun. For example, pots with glued beads and stones look good. You can attach them using various types of glue. These decorations hold well on the Moment tool.

Another great idea is to combine several techniques on one piece. So the missing elements are drawn. For example, you can take a motif containing flowers or poultry, stick it on, and then, using green acrylic paint, put a pattern of thick grass on the bottom of the pot. In addition, contrasting colors are combined, highlighting a certain part of the product.

You can alternate repeating patterns or combine several different images on one planter. There are actually a lot of ideas. It is interesting to look at a series of pots made in the same style using geometric patterns: lines, zigzags and other things. It is acceptable to use structural paste, which allows you to create a variety of textures on the surface.

Color harmony and the choice of a good image for flower pot decor

Decoupage of a flower pot with napkins requires the selection of a good color scheme and a good image. Plants and flowers always look great on such products: sunflowers, tulips, lilacs and more. It is not bad to settle animals on the pots: hedgehogs, birds, insects.

Drawings containing plants and flowers always look great on flower pots.

In order for the decorated product to harmoniously fit into the interior, it is necessary first of all to determine what exactly will attract attention: a pot or a plant located in it. If the pattern is chosen bright, catchy and very contrasting, then the look will certainly go to the cache-pot. This is not always correct. Those pots that emphasize the beauty of the plant look gorgeous.

It is better to give preference in color to shades of green, yellow, brown. It is good if the pattern chosen for the decor includes bright blotches of blue, red, purple. You should not make the pot too colorful, overload with images.

The most important rule that should be followed when choosing a color scheme and pattern is personal, subjective preferences. A handmade product should please the owner. Therefore, if you like lush roses, you should opt for them, and if the whole house is designed in the style of minimalism, geometric shapes will be ideal.

Important nuances in the technique of decoupage flower pots

The decoupage technique is quite simple, but requires some skill. The most common problem that craftswomen face is the formation of wrinkles during gluing the napkin to the surface. Sometimes such a defect is even handy. If desired, you can even enhance the effect by adding structural paste to significant places, for example, the middle of the inflorescences.

Prevent the formation of wrinkles during gluing in various ways. There are various recommendations for applying glue to a napkin. It is convenient for some to work with hard wide brushes, while others have adapted to smooth out the folds with their hands. The rational idea is to eliminate defects with fine-grained sandpaper. In this case, you must act very carefully so as not to damage the pattern.

The most common problem during decoupage of pots is the formation of wrinkles during gluing the napkin to the surface.

When decorating clay pots, it should be borne in mind that this material is hygroscopic, that is, it is able to absorb moisture. Such a product is best used in the form of a planter, inside which is placed a regular plastic container. It does not hurt to apply a layer of protective varnish that is not afraid of moisture.

Looking at the photo of the decoupage of flower pots, you can highlight several interesting ideas that are suitable for a particular interior. It is not necessary to completely copy, you can simply note for yourself the good location of the drawings, interesting elements, and so on. Decoupage looks extremely successful on a light background, which allows you to highlight all the elements of the image.

Using the decoupage technique to decorate flower pots allows you to get interesting interior items. With their help, you can successfully decorate a boring window sill, furniture. The field for creativity here is extremely wide. Decoupage is a fairly simple technique, having familiarized yourself with the basics of which, you can create beautiful and stylish products.

Last year, in preparation for Easter, my daughter and I sprouted barley grains. But we grew them in a very unusual container - eggshells served as impromptu pots for our seedlings, which we previously decorated by painting with watercolors.

Of course, it is not at all necessary to germinate barley for Easter in eggshells. Pleasing to the eye, fresh bright green sprouts of cereals feel great in an ordinary flower pot.

And if you approach the matter of sprouting grains creatively and decorate a flower pot, you get a real festive Easter composition.

Today I will show

How to make a decoupage of a flower pot with craquelure and gold leaf

Tools and materials for decoupage of a pot:

  • small plastic flower pot;
  • decorative napkin with Easter motifs;
  • acrylic paints;
  • foam sponge;
  • brushes;
  • fine-grained sandpaper;
  • glue for decoupage;
  • water mordan;
  • gum arabic;
  • flakes sweated;
  • varnish for potali;
  • cotton pads;
  • glossy acrylic lacquer.

Step 1: Decoupage the flower pot.

1. Thoroughly clean and degrease the surface of the pot. I usually do this with wet sanitary napkins.

2. With a foam sponge, I apply a mixture of white, yellow and brown acrylic paint to the surface of the pot to create a background for decoupage, in harmony with the background color of the decorative napkin.

Since my flower pot is dark, and the background for decoupage is light enough, I cover the surface of the pot with paint in several layers in intermediate drying.

3. After the acrylic paint is completely dry, I sand the surface of the pot with fine-grained sandpaper to smooth out the bumps left by the sponge.

4. From a decorative napkin, I tear out several Easter motifs along the contour with my fingers.

5. I delaminate the motifs by removing the lower non-colored layers of the napkin.

6. I glue the prepared napkin motifs to the surface of the flower pot with decoupage glue using a flat wide brush with soft synthetic bristles.

7. I fix the decoupage work with acrylic varnish. For this, one coat of varnish applied with a wide brush with natural bristles is enough.

After the varnish has dried, I proceed to decorate the flower pot with potal.

Step 2: Gilding with gold leaf.

8. I apply a thin layer of water muzzle to the area of the intended placement of sweating. In my case, on the rim of a flower pot.

Warning: it is better to rinse the brush from the muzzle immediately after applying it, otherwise the brush will simply have to be thrown away!

9. I let the muzzle dry a little to a state of tack (10-15 minutes, no more). I pick up the flakes on a dry brush with a fairly hard synthetic bristle. And I apply potal to the surface of the pot, treated with water muzzle.

Gently smooth the flakes with a brush so that they stick to the surface.

10. With a dry brush, I sweep away the excess of non-adhered sweat.

In the course of work, a small amount of gold flakes remained on the brush, and I decided to decorate the pasted decoupage motifs with them.

11. To fix sweating, it is best to use a special varnish. The use of water-based varnish may cause further discoloration or oxidation of the sweat. But, I think, in this case, this is of no fundamental importance - we are not gilding the icon, after all :).

So, I cover the "gold" with a layer of varnish for sweating with a brush with natural bristles.

Potali varnish should dry thoroughly, after which you can proceed to the final stage of decorating a flower pot - creating a decorative network of cracks (craquelure) on its surface.

Step 3: Craquelure with water face and gum arabic.

I have repeatedly told why I prefer this particular type of two-step craquelure. You can get acquainted with the details of the technique for creating craquelure using water muzzle and gum arabic in the master class on decoupage of the Fabulous Gzhel decanter and the master class on decoupage of a blush jar with a two-step craquelure.

12. I apply a layer of water muzzle on the surface of the decoupage pot, avoiding streaks.

13. Within 30 minutes, the layer of mordan dries to a state of tack. Then I pour a small amount of gum arabic on the surface of the pot and carefully spread it with my finger so as not to damage the muzzle layer.

I leave the work until the gum arabic is completely dry. For me personally, this stage is always the most difficult - on the one hand, I don’t want to spoil the work without drying the gum arabic, and on the other hand, my hands themselves reach out to wash it off quickly to see if the coveted crackle has turned out :).

14. After the gum arabic has dried, and this usually happens within 4-6 hours, the craquelure formed on the surface of the decoupage pot must be developed.

This time I decided to use bitumen, a solvent-based liquid patina, to develop the craquelure.

Putting on rubber gloves, I moisten a cotton pad with bitumen and gently rub the patina into the cracks resulting from the interaction (or rather, counteraction) of Mordan and gum arabic.

15. After 10-15 minutes, after the bitumen has dried, carefully wash off the layer of gum arabic with a stream of warm water. As a result, a network of thin, elegant cracks remains on the surface of the decoupage pot.

16. After the pot has dried, I fix the work with several layers of glossy acrylic varnish with intermediate drying for 3-4 hours.

Now the pot can be used for its intended purpose without fear. The varnish securely fixes decoupage, gold leaf, and craquelure.
