Decoration of wedding chairs with your own hands. Handmade wreaths of herbs, flowers. Wedding chair covers

When we decorate our house for the holidays, decorating chairs is the last thing we think about, if at all. Well, except if we are talking about a big holiday - for example, about a wedding. Preparing for a wedding banquet, many people remember that it would be nice to take care of beautiful chair covers.

Fortunately, chair covers for a wedding do not have to be sewn on their own: almost all restaurants and organizations that provide the “exit” service have in their arsenal the entire range of festive and table textiles: tablecloths, banquet skirts, napkins and covers. Chair covers can be rented for a limited time. Another option is to contact an agency that specializes in fabrics. Professionals will decorate the chairs with beautiful draperies, ribbons, silk or organza bows.

but decorate chairs it is possible not only for, but also for any other holiday. After all, it is not at all difficult to do this, but how the place of celebration will be transformed! There is another problem that is solved with the help of chair decor. Often, when we gather a large number of guests in the house, we use variegated chairs, which, of course, does not look very nice. The same or similar decor will make the chairs look similar to each other.

Let's talk about how you can decorate chairs for the holiday.

Chair decor for a festive feast

1. Fabric covers for chairs. Fabric on chairs is the most common and most ceremonial way. It is worth saying that this method is also the most expensive when it comes to chair decoration. But it's worth it!

As already mentioned, ready-made covers or fabrics for drapery can be rented, paying professionals for the direct “dressing” of chairs. But you won’t rent every time if you have a home holiday.

It will be easier to sew the required number of covers once and get them before special holidays. To spice up the decor, making it unique every time, use additional decors: colored ribbons, wide strips of organza, artificial flowers, etc.

You can do without sewing and just drape the chairs with large pieces of fabric, tying it with bright ribbons. But there are some difficulties here: firstly, you need to figure out how to beautifully drape the chair so that the fabric does not slip and does not cause discomfort to the person sitting. Secondly, you need a lot of fabric. It’s easier to spend time or money once and sew covers yourself or order tailoring from a dressmaker.

Sewing chair covers is not very difficult. The main difficulty is that all models of chairs are different, so choose a universal chair cover pattern practically unrealistic. However, it is not at all so difficult to make a pattern yourself. First you need to decide on the type of cover.

Next, you need to decide how many parts the chair cover will be sewn from. For example, the back, seat and front of the seat skirt can be made from a single piece of fabric. It remains only to sew the side parts of the seat skirt by laying folds or making scallops.

However, the case can be more complex, consisting of a much larger number of parts - it depends on its model. For beginners in sewing, it is better to choose a simpler option that requires a minimum of seams.

Here are some details that a chair cover can be sewn from:

Letter designations: A- the height of the back of the chair, B - the depth of the seat of the chair (it is not necessary to observe this value with ties - you can make them narrower, then it will be easier to sew), C - the distance from the edge of the chair seat to the floor or slightly higher, D - hem, E - the width of the tie, F - the height of the entire chair from the top of the back to the floor.

And the result might look like this:

But let's continue talking about making a unique pattern for specific chairs. Having decided on the number of parts, you need to measure the chair and, according to the measurements taken, cut out the future details of the cover - rectangles and squares with a decent supply of fabric. You can cut them, for example, from an old sheet.

Attach the cut pieces of fabric to the desired areas of the chair. Fasten the parts together with safety pins (if they are not there, you can baste them with a thread right on the spot), and cut off the excess.

When the chair is completely closed with this makeshift cover, sign each detail so that you don’t get confused later, where is the top, where is the bottom, where is the back, and where is the part of the skirt of the cover. Remove the pieces from the chair and use them as a pattern.

Cut out the details from a good fabric and start sewing. If you are new to sewing, start with a simple hand stitch and try on the cover. If he sat down on a chair like a glove, you can go for a sewing machine.

Here is a video that uses the described method of creating a pattern for a cover. The video is in English, but the video without words is quite informative.

2. Fabric covers for the back of the chair. It is much easier and cheaper to sew covers only on the backs of chairs. If the chairs look good on their own, then by decorating the backs with interesting covers, you will bring festive changes to the interior in just a few minutes.

Well, sewing such a chair cover is quite simple: you just need to measure the height of the back and its width. Moreover, the width will have to be measured in several places if the back expands upwards. Add a few inches to the thickness of the back and to the seams. Make a template, cut out one blank, sweep and try on. Having tried on, make changes to the pattern, if necessary, and start sewing. True, the covers for the backs of chairs may not be simple, but, as they say, with claims, but this is already for experienced dressmakers.

Chair back covers it is better to make it white - in this case, you can use a unique design for each holiday: for example, by sewing on buttons-eyes and a carrot-nose, you can easily turn a classic white chair back cover into a snowman cover. On Valentine's Day, covers can be decorated by sewing fabric hearts on them, and pinning numbers cut out of paper with pins corresponding to the age of the birthday person.

3. Fabric decoration of chairs. It will be much cheaper to decorate chairs with small pieces of fabric. But it should be a very beautiful fabric: silk, gauze, organza, guipure, chiffon, etc. A wide strip of fabric can be originally tied to the crossbar of the back of a chair or tied with a fabric around the top of the back. Lots of options.

4. Ribbons for decorating chairs. Ribbons are a win-win, as long as the chairs themselves look pretty good. Tapes are quite cheap, and there are a lot of options for using them.

For chairs with a crossbar between the legs, you can take several narrow but long ribbons for each chair - one end of the ribbon is tied to the crossbar on the back, and the second to the crossbar below. A few ribbons tied around a chair will instantly transform it. And the room will immediately become more elegant and brighter!

If the holiday will take place outdoors, tie a few ribbons to the crossbar of the back, and leave the other end of the ribbon free. Ribbons will flutter in the wind, creating great visual effects.

Ribbons can be tied diagonally across the back or wrapped around the crossbars of a chair. You can build a flower from a ribbon and tie it to the back.

5. Wreaths to decorate chairs. This option is more complicated than the method of decorating with ribbons. A wreath can be made from anything. For example, weave it from rods, wrap it with ribbon and decorate with artificial or natural flowers.

Wreaths are also made from intertwined pieces of wire, wrapping it with ribbons or beautiful paper and adding any decorative elements appropriate for the holiday: for example, cones, tangerines and Christmas balls for New Year's wreaths, nipples and bottles - for, shiny "magic wands" for decoration princess holiday, etc. Wreaths for can be made from plastic eggs by connecting them into rings.

Finished wreaths are tied to the back of the chair with a ribbon. By the way, the wreath can become - guests at the end of the holiday can remove the wreaths from their chairs and take them with them as a keepsake.

6. Balloons for decorating chairs. Blow up balloons and tie them to the backs of chairs. Fast, cheap and very easy.

7. Gifts of nature for decorating chairs. Beads made of apples or tied to the backs of chairs are very beautiful. Very often, live and artificial flowers are used to decorate chairs - mainly to decorate a wedding banquet. For the autumn holiday, you can decorate the chairs with yellow leaves, gathering them in bunches, tying them with twine and tying them with an elegant ribbon. chairs can be decorated with beads made of cones and spruce branches.

Chair decor for a children's party

Make chairs for a children's party bright and funny! If you're hosting a pet or safari-style kids' party, for example, buy cheap animal masks and tie them to the back of each chair.

You can turn chairs into "cars": find images of car brand symbols, print them out in a large enough format, stick them on cardboard, make holes, pass a string or narrow ribbon and hang the symbols from the backs of the chairs. Cut out wheels from cardboard, draw treads on them, and use double-sided tape to attach the wheels to each leg of the chair.

Whatever it is, you can always find something interesting chair decoration corresponding to the concept. For example, cut out suitable pictures from old children's magazines and glue them onto a larger cardboard base. Make holes on the four sides of the cardboard base, insert strings or braid and tie the resulting “tablet” to the back of the back of each chair.

To cheer up the children, put "socks" on the legs of the chairs. These can be specially knitted striped cases, but you can buy ordinary bright high socks or very small knee socks and put them on the legs of chairs before the holiday, tying them with a thread if necessary so that they do not fall off. The kids will love it.

Decor chairs for the New Year's holiday

Some options have already been mentioned above: these are snowman covers, orange beads and wreaths with cones, tangerines and Christmas tree decorations. Can sew chair back covers in the shape of santa hats. Buy bright warm scarves and tie them on chairs - that's the winter theme in your interior. And you can also put socks on the legs of chairs - and then they definitely won’t freeze.

  • If there is a crowded feast, it is not necessary to decorate all the chairs. To save time and / or, you can decorate some chairs that are at the same distance from each other (for example, every second or every third or fourth chair). The room will still look elegant.
  • When decorating chairs with ribbons and fabric trims, support the decor with other elements: for example, use napkins of the same color or tie vases on the table with the same ribbons.

The finishing touch of the festive decoration of the New Year's table in our apartment can be decorative decorations on the backs of the chairs. These are simple compositions with tinsel and balls, wreaths, bouquets and garlands made of natural materials, elegant hand-sewn covers, exquisite drapery. Today we will look at photos of such jewelry and talk about how to make them.

You should take care of this decoration in advance, it’s good that we still have almost a month before the New Year, because the rush is not good for sewing. To make an attractive New Year's decoration for the chairs, there is no need to sew a traditional floor-length cover, a "U-shaped" cap on the back is enough. It is better to spend time on decorating it beautifully, for example, with embroidery or appliqué with the image of Santa Claus, a snowman, an elegant Christmas tree, a bell, a boot and other New Year's symbols.

Red covers with a white trim in the form of a Santa Claus hat have become quite common - it’s easy to make, but they look elegant and original. By the way, if you have time, they can be knitted or crocheted. Make a large fluffy pom-pom out of white yarn, it is suitable for both knitted and sewn hats.

New Year's drapery of chairs

If you have festive chair covers, then to give them a New Year's look, you just need to add a few elements: red ribbon bows, Christmas balls, snowflakes, bouquets made of natural materials, take a look at these photos.

If there are no ready-made covers, then you can resort to drapery. For a beautiful chair drapery for the New Year, we need a piece of fabric 140-150 mm wide. We calculate the length according to the formula: (chair height + 25 cm *) x2 + hem allowances. Please note that I give an increase to the height of the chair conditionally, if the back is high, then you will have to add more. In any case, before buying fabric and cutting it, it is better to estimate the length using improvised means (for example, a blanket or a sheet). Fold the fabric in half and sew along the edges. We try on the cover on the chair, bend and hem the bottom. What we should get is looking at the photo, the drapery technique - on the video.

For those who are looking for a simpler idea, I can suggest watching this video instruction on how to drape the back of a chair. Nice results in a few minutes. The main thing is to buy the right fabric in advance. You can tie not only ribbons to the bow, but also other New Year's decorations - cones, Christmas balls, spruce twigs.

After some time, any furniture loses its original appearance. Almost all types of furniture have the property of rapid wear. Cabinets, tables, chests of drawers, etc. wear out less often.

However, chairs are by far the most subject to wear and tear, as we use them much more than other furniture. The body of the chair itself wears out not so quickly, and not so much, if not the upholstery of the seat and back.

So many will certainly decide to get rid of old and shabby furniture, but it is absolutely not worth doing this, since you can restore any old thing yourself.

In order to make a high-quality decor of a wooden chair, you need to have the necessary material and tools, as well as have certain skills in furniture repair, and, well, have a great imagination.

Main types of fabrics

Before starting work, it is necessary to determine the type and color of the fabric that will be installed on the seats, as well as on the back of the chair. Many experts advise using only the most reliable fabric in such work.

For the restoration and decoration of old and damaged chairs, it is preferable to use a durable fabric based on tapestry, which contains 100% cotton and artificial fibers.

This material is considered quite strong and durable, it has increased wear resistance. The main advantage of the tapestry is its fibers, which are directed on one side.

But for the restoration of antique or rare furniture, it is advisable to use special silk for furniture. The basis of this fabric has artificial fibers. Yes, and in appearance it looks very attractive and original. Chairs upholstered with silk will not leave anyone indifferent as they will have a chic and rich look.

When restoring antique antique chairs, it is necessary to use jacquard fabric. This is one of the most expensive and extraordinarily beautiful chair upholstery materials. However, some antique chairs are also decorated with modern materials, such as arpatek and microfiber. The main advantage of these types of fabrics is their impeccable classic elegance.

Decorating process

Before you start the process of decorating an old and shabby chair, you will have to stock up on everything you need:

  • upholstery fabric
  • the seat will require foam rubber and canvas
  • decorative cord

But in the process of decorating you will need to use the necessary tools:

  • carpentry set for work
  • pliers and knife
  • construction stapler
  • sandpaper of several types
  • furniture glue
  • grinding machine
  • hammer or wooden mallet

Before starting the restoration of any chair, it must be very carefully examined, and the degree of wear and deformation should be determined. At some points, to restore a damaged stool, little effort will be required to restore it.

At the same time, damaged parts can be fastened with special fixing angles having the required dimensions. It is worth noting that even a minor restoration will require disassembling the chair as a whole and disconnecting all its components.

In this case, each part of the chair must be restored separately. For more efficient and long-term operation of the chair, it is necessary to use dense and reliable components for connection.

Remove the entire original coating from the chair using a grinder or sandpaper. Then, you need to put the whole structure together, using a wooden mallet and a special furniture adhesive, it is advisable to use PVA glue.

Seat trim

Many modern chairs have a removable seat type, so this design will have to work outside the box. However, in other cases, the decoration of chairs must be done on the chair structure itself.

Next, you need to stock up on foam rubber, from which a soft and comfortable seat will eventually be made. The dimensions of this element must be strictly the same with your frame and deviations are not allowed. At the same time, most experts believe that the thickness of the foam must be chosen individually.

After that, you need to make a canvas out of batting, which will have all the basic and necessary dimensions of the “seat” of your chair. However, in this case, you need to leave about five centimeters on each side for fastening using stapler staples. After that, it is necessary to mark the fabric for its subsequent upholstery. Its size should be identical to the batting sheet.

Foam rubber can be safely laid on the place prepared under the seat, after which, it is necessary to fasten a sheet of batting prepared in size into the seat, carefully removing excess parts with a sharp knife. With the help of a stapler, the upholstery is upholstered along the entire contour of the frame, it is advisable to prevent the formation of various folds and flaws and tubercles.

Staples are nailed in several rows around the entire perimeter of the "seat". It is not advisable to stretch the upholstery tightly, as this can cause rapid deformation of the foam rubber, and this will lead to premature wear of the chair seat.

Backrest restoration

To make the seat back very soft and comfortable, you need to use a compacted type of cardboard or a thin plywood sheet that has exact and similar dimensions.

At the same time, plywood and foam rubber should also have the exact dimensions of the back of the chair. But the batting and upholstery during installation should have a small release tolerance of about five centimeters, but no more.

Also, to decorate the back of the chair, you need to install a pre-selected upholstery fabric. It is stretched face down, a plywood blank is installed on its upper part.

The entire finished surface should not have any roughness, flaws and tubercles, it should be perfectly smooth and even, and all excess must be cut off with a knife. After that, process around the entire perimeter of the seat and backrest, using a braid or cord, hide all visible seams.

Photo ideas for beautiful chair decor

Chairs are the most commonly used pieces of furniture. That is why they quickly age and acquire a nondescript appearance. Many owners immediately send worn-out chairs to the scrap, but if you wish, you can return them to their former attractiveness. Decorating chairs with your own hands will help breathe new life into them. In addition, in the same way you can decorate the interior for a holiday - a wedding, New Year or birthday.

Decorating chairs does not require a lot of labor and materials. A few ribbons of fabric and a little imagination are enough.

In order to restore the aesthetic appearance of old chairs, there are several simple ways, each of which can be successfully used at home. Everything you need for decoration can be purchased at any shopping center.

Chair decor with fabric

It is not uncommon for owners to completely change the colors of the walls during repairs and the furniture no longer matches the new interior. What to do? Comfortable and high-quality chairs are a pity to throw away. Here, decorating chairs with fabric will come in handy.

The main thing with this method of updating chairs is to choose a durable and reliable material that matches the color of the finish. It can be microfiber, jacquard or furniture silk, but most craftsmen still recommend using tapestry. This fabric is characterized by high wear resistance and durability due to the inclusion of artificial fibers in its composition.

Scheme of measuring the chair and drapery of the cover.

If you need to decorate the chairs for the holiday, you can choose a more elegant, themed fabric, not paying attention to its performance, because when the holiday is over, the decor from the chairs will be removed. If we are talking about reupholstering furniture to the requirements of a new interior, the material must be very durable, easy to clean and not subject to pollution.

In addition to the fabric, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • a piece of foam rubber;
  • thin batting;
  • furniture braid or tape;
  • construction stapler;
  • glue for furniture;
  • sandpaper;
  • scissors;
  • pliers;

First of all, you need to pay attention to the reliability of the design of the chair. If it is old enough, creaks and sways, all the parts need to be disassembled, the fastening points checked for strength, the grooves cleaned with sandpaper, removing irregularities, and then reassembled by gluing the parts with furniture glue.

If the chair is strong and reliable, you can immediately start decorating. To do this, put a piece of foam rubber corresponding to the size of the seat on the base. Then the foam rubber is covered with a sheet of batting, which has an allowance on each side of 5 cm more than the size of the seat. The third layer will be a piece of fabric the same size as the batting. Batting and fabric are folded under the seat base and secured from the underside with a construction stapler. Excess material is trimmed with scissors.

Schemes for decorating chairs with fabric.

When cutting material for decorating chairs, close attention should be paid to the location of the pattern or pattern. Better if it is in the center of the seat. In order to correctly position the pattern, it is advisable to first mark the fabric with a pencil or crayon, and only then cut out the details.

The decoration of the back of the chair is similar to the decoration of the seat: first, foam rubber is applied to the element, then batting and fabric. The edges of the batting and fabric are folded over and attached to the chair with a stapler. In order to hide the paper clips, the seams are decorated with thick braid or ribbon. For its fastening transparent joiner's glue is used.

Decorating chairs using decoupage technique

Decoupage is one of the most popular decorating methods today. This is a great way to decorate not only accessories such as jewelry boxes, bottles, vases and much more, but also furniture. Decoupage finishing is suitable for chairs made entirely of wood or made of plywood that do not have soft backs or seats.

In order to decorate chairs, you will need to prepare:

  • clean dry cloth;
  • container with water;
  • sandpaper;
  • putty for wood;
  • putty knife;
  • any paint for furniture (preferably white);
  • paint brush;
  • PVA glue;
  • napkins for decoupage or pictures;
  • clear varnish for furniture

Before decorating chairs, it is necessary to check all connections for strength.

First of all, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface to be decorated from dust and dirt. Then it should be treated with sandpaper and puttied. When the putty dries, the surface is again processed with sandpaper until smooth. It is advisable to apply at least two layers of putty, making them as thin as possible.

After that, the chair can be painted with paint of any desired color, but experts recommend using white water-based paint, because it is on a white background that decoupage looks most advantageous. When painting, it should be remembered that it is necessary to use a fresh dye, since the old composition may become yellowish or peel off after drying.

Then the drawing from special napkins or pictures must be transferred to the seat of the chair. You can do this in the following way:

  1. All the necessary elements are cut out from special napkins or pictures. In addition, each drawing should have an indent from the edge of about 3 mm.
  2. A layer of PVA glue slightly diluted with water is applied to the surface to be treated.
  3. The cut out elements of the pattern are lowered into a container of water for several minutes, then blotted with a clean, dry rag or towel. A layer of glue is also applied to them.
  4. The workpiece is applied to the treated surface and smoothed. Excess glue is removed. Thus, all parts of the decoration are glued.

When the elements are dry, it is required to finish painting the piece of furniture. To do this, use a mixture of equal proportions of PVA glue, white paint and water. Painting should begin with the elements of decoration, painting over the outlines of the picture with a small brush, then you need to take a large brush and process the entire seat. When the paint dries, the treated surface must be covered with several layers of clear acrylic varnish. Each layer dries for about 24 hours, so varnishing can take 3-4 days.

In this way, you can decorate not only chairs, but also a stool. Without a doubt, it will become the object, the appearance of which will surprise not only relatives, but also guests.

Decorating with jute rope

Decor from natural jute will create an atmosphere of comfort and warmth in the apartment. In addition, it can become a beautiful accent to emphasize the style of the interior. To decorate chairs with jute, you need to prepare:

You need to wrap the stool with jute as tightly as possible, gluing the rope where it cannot be fixed.

  • a piece of fabric of a suitable color;
  • a rope made of jute or sisal with a thickness of at least 3.5 mm;
  • stapler;
  • glue;
  • ruler and pencil;
  • scissors;
  • hammer;
  • wallpaper cloves.

First, the old upholstery must be removed from the seat. Then the whole structure is wrapped with a rope. The technique of work is as follows: the edge of the rope is fixed on the inside of the leg, back or other part of the structure with a bracket or nail. After that, the entire structure is tightly wrapped with a rope. The other end of the rope is fixed in the same way.

In those places where the rope cannot be fixed or nailed, it must be glued to the base with wood glue, hiding the ends. To make the decoration look more harmonious, you can remove the middle from the back of the chair, leaving only the base of the structure, and weave it with a rope, covering the central empty part of the back. Weaving should be done in the form of a grid with large or small cells.

The seat is upholstered in new fabric instead of the old upholstery. To do this, a piece is cut out of the material, the dimensions of which are 5 cm larger on each side of the seat. The edges of the fabric are tucked under the seat and fixed with a construction stapler. On the side outer part of the seat, decorative wallpaper studs can be driven in, securing the drapery of the fabric.

Other ways to decorate chairs

If the interior requires themed decoration, several other decorating methods can be used here. After the celebration, the decor is removed.

So, you can decorate chairs for the wedding day with bows, strips of fabric, garlands, natural or artificial flowers and leaves.

For example, a garland of rag flags in the form of triangles will look unusual. On each flag, you can write letters that, when assembled into a garland, will make up the names of the newlyweds. Chairs with an openwork back can be decorated with large bows of wide strips of fabric or lace, the knot of which is woven into bouquets of wild flowers and other plant material. For these purposes, branches of gypsophila or dried flowers are perfect.

It is not difficult to decorate chairs for the holiday or update them to the requirements of a new interior. It is enough to show a little imagination, and the house will be replenished with an original piece of furniture that will be admired by friends and acquaintances.
