In order for your linen and clothes to retain their color for as long as possible, it is necessary to follow the recommendations for washing and care.

High-quality underwear or clothing always has a label from the manufacturer of the product, which indicates its composition and recommendations for care. Some recommendations and interpretation of symbols are presented below.

Applies to all materials:

• Do not use bleach unless specifically stated on the product label.
• Use mild detergents (liquid or powders).
• Incorrect dosage of detergent can damage the laundry. Dosage recommendations are indicated on the detergent packaging.
• When washing in the machine, put your underwear in special bags.
• Do not soak printed or colored fabrics.
• Do not dry in the machine.
• Before washing, pay attention to the care instructions indicated on the product. The main symbols and their meanings are given in the table at the end of the article.
• Sort laundry by type of wash. Wash new colored items separately the first time you wash them. Wash bright and dark colors separately.
• If the care symbols indicate a delicate wash, it is advisable to halve the amount of laundry. This will prevent it from twisting too much.
  Wash items made of synthetic fibers and their mixtures separately from cotton and linen.
• Dark materials have an excess of coloring matter. This excess must be removed by hand washing.

We are sensitive to the things we love. Openwork items, clothes made of delicate fabrics or with decorative elements: 10 years ago, hand washing was a common occurrence for such products. New technologies have left this process far behind. The delicate wash mode in the washing machine will help keep things in their original form. This mode is present in almost all models that are on sale today, and is indicated by a special icon on the panel.

Depending on the brand of equipment and its brand, gentle washing may be present in different programs. The allowable volume of products and the features of the work cycles are described in detail in the instructions in the section on decrypting the programs installed by default.

We can say for sure that the gentle mode will be used in washing delicate fabrics. These include woolen and silk products, chiffon, guipure, satin.

Each manufacturer uses its own mode designations, so there is no single approach. To determine the optimal one, you should read the description of the programs of the selected model. There are also signs on the labels of things that carry information about the restrictions on fabric care. The classic notation for gentle cleaning looks like this:

Some models use a sign that characterizes type of products: By the type of clothing, you can determine the presence of a delicate cycle. Washing at a low temperature with low speed also indicates a gentle cycle. Gentle washing can be defined by such mode names as:

• special mode;
• thin fabrics;
• delicate wash;
• handwash.

If the selected washing machine does not have a delicate wash icon, you can select the most appropriate one from the programmed standard modes. For these purposes, you should choose the shortest program in time. Fabrics that require careful care should not be immersed in water for a long time. You should select only the low temperature mode or reduce the degree of water heating manually. It is also better to adjust the spin, and not connect additional functions.

The principle of operation of gentle washing

The delicate cleaning program completely replaces the hand washing of “whimsical” things. On equipment from different manufacturers, it can be with different names, but the cycles of the washing process are almost identical and are as follows:

1. The water intake machine produces in more than in standard mode. This is done so that the fabric is not subjected to strong friction against the walls of the drum or other products loaded into the tank.
2. The temperature regime is usually does not exceed 40°, since in a special program things are often erased that are capable of losing color and staining neighboring things.
3. The machine works on low revs to prevent tissue stretching.
4. The program can work without spin phase: In this case, the water stop function is enabled. If spinning is provided, then it is as gentle as possible. The required parameters are set in the technique by default. But, having experience in cleaning certain things, you can manually adjust the selected program, or set your own parameters in the hand wash mode.
5. In sparing mode, regardless of the maximum load, the manufacturer offers to reduce the volume and mass of things. For example, if the allowable load limit for standard washing is 6 kg, then for delicate washing allowed no more than 3kg. This will avoid unwanted twisting and deformation of things.

When using the delicate mode, do not turn on additional drying or ironing functions. Lace products and decorated fabrics must be loaded into the washing machine using special mesh containers.

Detergents used

Using a gentle cleaning program is not enough to keep things in their original condition. Detergents also play an important role. In this case, it would be appropriate to use liquid powders. They dissolve well at low temperatures and are easily washed out of tissues, prevent the formation of pellets and preserve the structure of the tissue.

Depending on the color scheme of the items loaded into the drum, both bleaching detergents and universal detergents can be used. It is important to try to avoid the phosphates and enzymes found in many powders. Detergents effectively remove stains and dirt products with lanolin. This component has a soft effect on the fibers of the fabric, while maintaining rich colors.

Modern washing machines are equipped with a bunch of different programs that are designed for different fabrics. One of these programs in the washing machine is a delicate wash. This program is especially in demand among washing machine users, because it allows you to wash things carefully. But let's see if the delicate wash is really a program that can be trusted to wash clothes made of delicate fabrics? Or is it just a marketing ploy.

How the delicate wash mode works in the washing machine

The delicate washing mode for different washing machines consists of different cycles, but they are united by the following general rules:

• Washing takes place in a large amount of water- this means that during delicate washing, the washing machine draws more water into the tank, so that the mechanical effect on the laundry is as gentle as possible.
• Wash at low temperature– all delicate fabrics should be washed at a low temperature, usually 30°C - 40°C (depending on the manufacturer and model). This temperature will reduce the shedding of things and they will not be painted.
• Smoother drum movements– the delicate wash program assumes that the drum will spin more slowly and more smoothly so as not to spoil the laundry.
• Delicate spin- on some washing machines, spinning is not activated at all, and washing takes place without it. On others, the spin speed is much lower than on a regular wash.

All these conditions must undoubtedly be observed with a delicate washing regime, but in reality this is not always the case.

Is “Delicate Mode” Really Delicate?

In reality, things don't always go as planned. On some washing machines, the delicate mode involves washing woolen fabrics, silk fabrics. On other washing machines, manufacturers have decided that a delicate wash is needed in order to wash delicate synthetics or cotton.

Therefore, before relying on the automatic program of the washing machine, be sure to read the instructions for it, which should indicate the parameters of delicate washing: temperature, spin speed, fabrics for which it is intended.

Very often, manufacturers imply that silk or wool items should be washed on programs of the same name, therefore, on such washing machines, the delicate program is not intended for washing such fabrics.

What to do if there is no delicate wash on the washing machine

Many manufacturers generally do not make the delicate wash mode on their washing machines, considering it redundant. This is due to the fact that standard programs are quite enough for washing delicate fabrics. In addition to the standard washing programs, they add washing modes for fabrics, for example, wool, delicate fabrics.

Also on many washing machines there is a “hand wash” program, which, according to the manufacturers’ idea, is an analogue of a real hand wash and involves a very gentle mode of washing things, for example, for washing tulle.

From all of the above, we can conclude: if your washing machine does not have a delicate wash mode, but there are such as hand wash, delicate fabrics or the like, then make sure by reading the instructions that they are suitable for your clothes and use them.

If your washing machine does not have such programs either, which is unlikely, then you can set the delicate mode yourself in the following way:

• Set the washing temperature to 30°C
• Disable the spin function
• If possible, wash in special laundry bags.

Of course, you won’t be able to set the drum to work more smoothly, but the above steps will already allow you to wash most delicate fabrics in the washing machine.

Each item has a label. These symbols allow the wearer to understand how to take care of the clothes. On the labels of things you will find not only signs of washing modes, but also recommendations for caring for clothes - ironing temperature and so on. Looking at the tag, you can find out the composition of the fabric, the manufacturer. But in order to follow the recommendations correctly, you need to understand what these symbols mean.

Clothing care labels may vary depending on the manufacturer. But their decoding is always the same: they inform the user about proper care so that the thing does not wear out longer. Labels are sewn on the seams from the wrong side.

How to make out what the symbols on your clothes mean? The table below provides a detailed breakdown.

Wash

Usually, the sign indicating the washing mode is indicated first. Having deciphered it, you will understand how to wash a thing correctly: in a typewriter or by hand, in order to avoid premature wear. You can see such washing mode icons on children's and adult clothes.

	If you saw such a sign on the label, then you can safely send the item to the washing drum or wash it by hand. Usually characteristic of synthetic things.
	Handwash. Items made from fabrics that require careful care are washed on low-temperature cycles, not higher than 40 degrees. Washing by hand should be done carefully, without strong impact and spin. A rectangle with a dash at the top also means that machine washing is prohibited (see photo above, Fig. 3)
	Dry cleaning. Traditional and hand washing are prohibited - contact the experts so as not to spoil the fabric. Most often, such a symbol can be found on the tag of coats, suits, dresses.
	The symbol means that clothes are washed at minimum temperatures - no higher than 30 degrees. Spinning requirement: minimum speed.
	Spinning and intensive washing are contraindicated. The temperature barrier of water is a maximum of 30 degrees.
	Machine wash is not prohibited, but the maximum temperature mark is 40 degrees.
	Also wash at 40 degrees, with a reduced spin speed.
	Wash only at 40°. In this case, washing powders with a neutral composition can be used.
	A temperature of 95 degrees means that clothes can be boiled. Feel free to choose the maximum temperature setting if you need to remove heavy dirt or disinfect.
	Machine wash is prohibited.

Whitening icons

The second symbol on the tag after washing explains how to bleach. In order not to spoil things, do not ignore these designations.

	"Do not bleach" sign. Crossed out triangle - it is forbidden to bleach, especially with chlorine-containing substances.
	Clothes are allowed to be bleached. In this case, the process should not take place at high temperatures, the complete dissolution of the powder is mandatory.
	Black triangle with parallel stripes - bleaching is allowed without chlorine.

Icons how to dry things

The next in order is the icon indicating how to dry the product correctly: in a vertical position, spreading it on the surface or in the drum of the machine (if such a function is available).

Symbol	What does
	The square on the tag allows you to dry clothes in any of the known ways.
	If you find such a designation on the label of your clothes, refuse to dry at all.
	The vertical bar in a square illustrates schematically that vertical drying is best.
	In this case, it is also advised to dry things vertically, but at the same time it is worth avoiding push-ups - the water should drain arbitrarily.
	A horizontal stripe in a square means that things are recommended to be leveled on a surface: a table or an ironing board (so they retain their size and shape).
	Similar to the vertical drying sign. With this symbol, it is forbidden to wring out things and it is shown to dry them in a form straightened on a horizontal surface.
	A square with a vertical stripe and a line in the corner does not prohibit vertical drying. It is only necessary to protect things from exposure to direct sunlight (the ideal place is in the fresh air or on a balcony, in the shade).
	Drying takes place without spinning in a vertical position. Requires protection from sunlight.
	A square with a horizontal line and a stripe in the corner indicates the horizontal drying of the item. In addition, it is worth protecting clothes from sun exposure.
	One of the most demanding symbols, prohibiting wringing, hanging (to dry only in a horizontal plane) and exposure to direct sunlight.
	This symbol is hardly used today. Indicates vertical drying of laundry.
	The product cannot be dried in the washer.
	Overdrying of laundry is not allowed, therefore the maximum drying temperature is 60 degrees.
	Dry safely at temperatures up to 80 degrees.
	This icon does not recommend squeezing or twisting water out of things to preserve their aesthetics and shape.

Ironing icons

In order to know what is the allowable ironing temperature for different fabrics, the ironing temperature icon is indicated on the label.

Conventions	Meaning
	The maximum temperature mark is 140 degrees.
	The sign quite logically informs that the product cannot be ironed.
	You will find it on products made of nylon, nylon, polyester, synthetics. Recommended ironing at 110 degrees through the lining (gauze, thin fabric).
	For delicate natural fabrics - silk, viscose, cotton, etc. – we approach the 150-degree ironing mode.
	Ironing at temperatures up to 200°C. Suitable for linen and cotton.

Chemical cleaning

When a product needs dry cleaning, be sure to look at the label - whether it can be brought and under what circumstances.

Conventions	Meaning
	The circle icon on the tag means dry cleaning is recommended.
	Dry cleaning is prohibited.
	Today the symbol is rarely used. Means that cleaning can be carried out by any means.
	Circled "P" symbol - dry clean only recommended. You can use products with tetrachlorethylene and other substances for the "P" symbol.
	Dry cleaning with hydrocarbons with a boiling point of 150-210 degrees. The ignition temperature is 38-60 degrees.
	The sign "P" and "F" in a circle - cleaning agents with ethylene chloride, hydrocarbon, perchlorethylene are used. Cleaning should be done gently with little water.
	The letter "W" - professional wet cleaning (wet).
	Gentle wet cleaning only. If there are two stripes under the sign, it means that a very delicate cleaning is provided.
	The crossed out sign will tell you that wet cleaning is not allowed.

Each fabric needs individual care. To keep things beautiful and looking like new for longer, you need to know how to properly wash and care for them. Therefore, follow the rules and recommendations.

Cotton fabric. Can be washed in water up to 95 degrees by machine or by hand. Use of any detergents is allowed.

Silk and Wool. Delicate wash (hand or CM). The temperature must not exceed 30°C. Only special products for these types of fabric are used. Spin 200-400 rpm or absent. Things made of natural wool are dried on a horizontal surface in a straightened form.

Synthetic and semi-synthetic fabrics. For modal, viscose, hand washing is recommended at low temperatures not exceeding 40 degrees. Soft detergents are used. Shrinkage of 4-6% is possible. For polyester, elastane, polyamide, lycra machine wash temperature - 40 degrees. When ironing, the iron should not be too hot.

You may have noticed that some products come with a piece of fabric. What is it for?

1. Color. You can check how well the thing is painted and whether it can be washed with other things. To do this, dip the patch in a soapy solution for 10 minutes. Then rub well and leave in cold water. If the water has not changed color, then the thing is not shedding.
2. Shrinkage. Measure the patch. Dip for 30 minutes in warm water. Once dry, measure again and calculate the difference.
3. Test. If the manufacturer has provided a small flap, then at the same time check the compatibility of the fabric with your laundry detergent.

When buying new clothes, the first thing they are interested in is the rules for washing and drying, since many of the washing machines have many functions. However, some of them do not provide for compliance with the temperature regime or the use of spin, etc. So is it worth being guided by conventional signs or can you trust your knowledge and the capabilities of the washing machine?

Laundry icons on clothes are located on a special label that is sewn on from the wrong side. The fabric tag may also contain information about the material from which the clothing is made, the composition and the manufacturer. The first or last insert indicates the size in different international values. Depending on the type of clothing, labels and tags may be located in different places.

	Tags are placed at the side seams or at the back of the waist. There may also be two tags containing all the information about the product.
	Labels are usually located in the left side seam. Less often on the back under the collar or pocket.
	Tags can also be located on the left side, so they determine where the front side is. Less often they are located on the back.
	Labels may be present on the side and back seams. Also may be missing if the product is sold as a set. Instructions are usually included in the accompanying leaflet.

Tip: Many people cut off the tags because of the inconvenience to wear. If necessary when wearing baby clothes for newborns, follow the rules for washing clothes for babies. Otherwise, write down the instructions on the tags if they have additional recommendations.

However, it is not always possible to wash a thing, relying on the general principles of program washing. Spinning is prohibited somewhere, some fabrics are vulnerable to temperature, while others, on the contrary, need to be washed off stubborn stains when boiling is not possible. Wash

Tip: Remember that the icons on clothes when washing with any restrictions are different from those indicated on the machine. So, on tags, the conditions for washing wool can be interpreted as a sign with two lines, and on machines - in the form of circular lines. Some correspondences are shown below.

Drying

The drying mode on the washing machine is directly related to cleaning things. Therefore, knowing what the signs on clothes for washing and drying mean is necessary for proper fabric care.

The sign indicates that the item can be dried at very high temperatures, including tumble drying.

The thing withstands high temperatures during drying, conventional machine drying is not prohibited.

Gentle drying sign. If your washing machine model is equipped with such a function, use a gentle mode with a minimum temperature setting. ( see manual)

Items with this icon must not be tumble dried or tumble dried. It is also not recommended to use the spin cycle, but there are no restrictions on only delicate washing.

Whitening

Some icons on laundry labels may indicate dry cleaning, excluding machine and hand wash. It is allowed to use solvents of any composition in relation to things.

During dry cleaning, only products containing hydrocarbon, ethylene chloride and monofluorotrichloromethane can be used.

Clothing can be cleaned with popular white spirits, other fluorotrichloromethanes and hydrocarbons.

Dry cleaning is allowed on a delicate cycle using hydrocarbons.
Gentle washing with hydrocarbon without post-drying.

Dry cleaning without the use of liquid products.

Dry cleaning is prohibited. A double crossed out circle indicates that dry cleaning is prohibited, but requires special attention to the choice of solvents. It is allowed to use white spirit. ( see manual)

The thing can be bleached by any means, even with the content of chlorine

Bleach is prohibited. Do not use products containing chlorine.

Whitening is possible only in cold water with complete dissolution of the chemical agent.

Whitening in cold water using products that do not contain chlorine in the composition.

Sometimes the washing modes indicated on the clothes tags are not found on some models of washing machines. Therefore, it is very important to "translate" the meaning of the marking in relation to the washing parameters. The table below will help you find the correspondence between the symbols.
