DIY Venetian masks

Celebrate with carnival dressing up in various fancy dress. Naturally, the outfit includes New Year's masks. You can make them with your own hands in just a few minutes.

Half masks or carnival glasses

It is these options - ways of making crafts in a short time - that will be considered in this article. Those interested will be able to learn how to make it quickly, practically out of nothing.

Carnival glasses look very nice. They are simply cut out of cardboard, and a string is attached in the corners for tying. Then such New Year's masks are decorated with their own hands using colored foil, beads, sequins, beads.

The most important thing in this craft is to choose the right shape for the glasses. After all, there are a great many of them. Users can choose from the options presented here a suitable template for the New Year's mask and use it.

You can add details to the glasses that your own imagination will tell the master. For example, a golden crown, a red swirl of yarn or non-spun wool, a mustache looks luxurious here as an addition. You can also add to the glasses a crown of feathers, like the Indians, a hat with artificial flowers or fruits, a clown cap.

Noseless cardboard half mask

It is as easy to make such New Year's masks with your own hands as the previous ones. You just need to choose an option to taste from the presented catalog. Then the selected template of the New Year's mask is printed on the printer. Then it is cut out and glued to the cardboard. Holes should be made along the edges of the masks, where to insert and fasten a tape or twine with a knot.

By the way, such New Year's paper masks are made not only in the form of animals. Some people prefer to draw characters from films that are representatives of the "homosapiens".

Disposable cardboard plate mask

There is another quick way to make an important attribute of a carnival outfit. Since you can make a New Year's mask not only from sheet cardboard, but also from a molded disposable plate, here users are presented with some options for such crafts.

Of course, you will have to put your hand in this case too. For example, you will need to cut horns, ears, mane, patch, trunk from cardboard or other plate and glue to the base. You also need to cut holes for the eyes.

And New Year's masks for children also need to be successfully painted. Animals can wink, make faces, stick out their tongues - this will make the image cool, charming and funny. Some craftsmen use additional cotton wool during the manufacture of masks, this creates the effect of fluffy curly wool.

Half masks on a stick look creative - as if the lorgnette came back to us from the last century.

Volumetric masks of animals by rolling paper

The following quick option for making a New Year's accessory is very interesting. It consists in the fact that the master takes a sufficiently large paper circle, makes a cut in it to the center and imposes one edge on the other. It turns out a cone. The dart is fixed with a stapler, sewn with a thread or glued together.

From below, the incisions are made not so deep, since these darts will shape the chin. They are also superimposed on each other and fixed. The ears are glued with glue, the eyes are cut out with scissors.

After painting the mask, you need to attach an elastic band or strings to it so that it stays on your face.

Voluminous nose mask

The above described how to make a New Year's mask without a nose. Basically, it was a flat half mask. But on its basis it is quite possible to make a mask with a voluminous nose, which will be more interesting and imaginative.

The pattern template consists of two parts. This is the actual mask and nose with allowances for gluing. It should be placed in the hole. The upper allowance is glued into the horizontal cut, the side ones, respectively, will pass along the side cuts. The nose piece itself must be bent along vertical lines. Although in some cases it is appropriate to make a rounded bridge of the nose, without folds of paper.

Making templates with your own hands. Master Class

It is not always possible to find and copy a ready-made mask pattern. What to do? In such cases, the user will be helped by a master class, which will teach you how to draw a drawing of a blank for a mask yourself.

A New Year's party is a time when even an experienced skeptic throws off the burden of worries and plunges into the world of Christmas magic. And the quintessence of wonderful events becomes a costume carnival - after all, no one refuses to stop being a logistician, consultant or accountant at least for one night, and try on the image of a mysterious character from a film or a mask of a creature descended from the pages of an amazing fairy tale!

Even harsh directors can have fun under a secret guise, because the carnival is arranged for this in order to plunge into the world of unrestrained fun. Preparing for a masquerade, like any other costume party, will take some effort on your part. The most important attribute of such a celebration is the New Year's mask, on which the success of the image you have created largely depends. Of course, you can make your life easier by buying a finished product in one of the stores offering themed goods.

You can not only make a carnival mask, but also ... paint it on your face!

However, as practice shows, it is not so easy to buy a really beautiful, unusual and unique mask! Quality handicrafts usually cost a lot of money, and cheap plastic masks can ruin the effect of a holiday dress, undermining your efforts to think about a New Year's look. That is why we believe that the most original masks will be exclusive products created by your own hands.

Are you afraid that such a job requires special skills? Do you think that all the skills were lost after school, when was the last time you held cardboard and scissors in your hands? Nothing like this! Modern materials make it possible to make a stunning mask in just a couple of hours, and some ideas suggest that you just paint a mask on your face! Intrigued? Well, we are ready to talk about the simplest, but, nevertheless, original ideas so that you prepare an unusual mask for the New Year 2019!

Idea number 1: Carnival mask from foamiran

Also known as ductile suede or foam rubber, this creative material is truly innovative. It can take almost any shape - just heat the foamiran a little with the sole of the iron, over the burner of the stove or with the help of a hot "barrel" of a thermo gun, and it will become unusually malleable! Then you just need to press, twist or squeeze the material, creating any bends on it.

An important characteristic of foamiran is its safety and environmental friendliness. It can even be used for children's creativity, so you can create a completely safe mask that does not cause allergies and irritations. By the way, if the mask color proposed in the master class does not suit you, you can correct it by painting foamiran - the porous structure perfectly absorbs acrylic or oil paints. So, to create a mask for the carnival, you will need:

  • foamiran leaf;
  • a roll of soft white lace;
  • tape with mother-of-pearl "half beads";
  • thermal gun;
  • a tube of glue;
  • scissors;
  • ruler;
  • simple pencil;
  • ribbon for making strings;
  • some rhinestones;
  • roll of scotch tape;
  • tape measure;
  • sheet of office paper.

Mask making

  • Step 1. Take a centimeter (tailor's) tape and measure three values: the distance from one ear to the other, the length of the interocular distance (bridge of the nose) and the distance from the tip of the nose to the hairline.
  • Step 2. Transfer all measurements to a sheet of white paper to outline the main lines of the future mask.
  • Step 3. Fold the sheet lengthwise and then crosswise again. Mark the start and end points of the holes that will become the eye slits.
  • Step 4. Sketch openwork edges and cut out the template.
  • Step 5. Transfer the template to the foamiran sheet (you can attach a paper blank with pieces of tape so that the lines do not move when redrawing). Cut out the mask.
  • Step 6. Warm up the heat gun and wrap the part of the mask that holds the nose around the heated upper part of the “muzzle”. Press down a little while heating to obtain a well-defined rounded shape.
  • Step 7. Cut the lace patterns from the ribbon, shape the mask.
  • Step 8. Decorate the product with beads and rhinestones. A ribbon with beads can be put around the perimeter of the mask, and rhinestones can be placed on the lace pattern.
  • Step 9. Flip the mask over to the opposite side. Measure out two pieces of satin ribbon, glue it around the temples with a heat gun. Glue small pieces of foamiran over the tape to attach the strings.

Idea number 2: Patterned mask on a mesh

A great idea that will help you create a gorgeous openwork mask with ornate patterns in just half an hour. This mask is perfect for any dress - from a laconic black case to a ballroom version of tens of meters of organza or chiffon. Another great news is that almost all the items for creating a mask are usually on hand, or are completely inexpensive. To make a patterned half mask, you will need:

  • a small piece of dense mesh;
  • a sheet of office paper;
  • thermal gun;
  • scissors;
  • pencil;
  • Scotch;
  • needle;
  • black thread;
  • tape measure;
  • satin ribbon to match the mask;
  • cling film;
  • a tube of paint for stained glass painting (contour) in black.

Mask making

  • Step 1. Measure the distance from the middle of the forehead to the tip of the nose, between the eyes and from one ear to the other. Sketch your measurements on a piece of paper.
  • Step 2. Draw a fantasy half mask outlining its main outlines. Draw openwork patterns and swirls over the entire surface of the template, covering as much of the paper as possible.
  • Step 3. Cover the drawing with cling film.
  • Step 4. Put a piece of mesh on top, press a little so that it sits tightly on the film. Secure the edges with pieces of tape.
  • Step 5. Carefully repeat the main outline of the mask and the eye slits. Gradually transfer all openwork patterns with a contour. You need to apply the contour in a dense layer so that the pattern is voluminous.
  • Step 6. Let the paint dry, carefully separate the mesh from the film. Cut out the mask, cut the holes for the eyes.
  • Step 7. Fold the mask across, outline a slightly widening triangle around the nose and stitch it loosely with a thread so that the mask sits more comfortably on the bridge of the nose.
  • Step 8. Measure and cut the satin ribbon for the ties, attach with a heat gun to the inside of the half mask.

Idea number 3: Mask-make-up

A surprisingly simple but effective holiday idea. Why spend hours cutting, glueing and decorating a mask when you can immediately paint it on your face? During the dance, you do not need to worry that it will subside, and after the end of the holiday, it will be enough to wash yourself thoroughly with a make-up remover. You can offer several options for creating a make-up mask. The first option is suitable for girls who love everything light, airy and are going to put on a dress of light colors. For him you will need:

  • long-lasting contouring for white makeup (if possible, it is better to use theatrical make-up or paint for body art);
  • body contouring pencil;
  • glitter tattoo set;
  • sequin ribbon;
  • rhinestones;
  • glue for eyelashes;
  • gold liner liner;
  • golden liquid shadows;
  • artificial eyelashes;
  • several white feathers;
  • a piece of lace with a rounded pattern.

Create a mask

  • Step 1. Apply makeup, hiding all skin irregularities - in contrast to the mask, they will be especially visible.
  • Step 2. Mark the outline of the future mask with a nude pencil.
  • Step 3. Thoroughly tint the face with makeup, be sure to capture the eyebrow area.
  • Step 4. Glue a glitter tattoo to the top of the mask, creating an unusual pattern.
  • Step 5. Paint over the eyelids with sparkling golden shadows.
  • Step 6. Apply eyelash glue to the outline of the mask (don't worry if white spots remain on the skin - after drying, the eyelash glue will become completely transparent). Carefully attach the sequin tape along the outline. Cut off the excess and once again coat the tape joint with glue.
  • Step 7. Using a gold liner, apply openwork curls to the surface of the mask.
  • Step 8. Glue on rhinestones, creating additional decor. Particular attention should be paid to the eyebrow area to hide the hairs well.
  • Step 9. Apply mascara, or even better - complement the makeup with artificial tufts.
  • Step 10. Glue a lush snow-white feather to one temple and hide this place with a lace rosette decorated with rhinestones. To complete the look, it remains only to apply lipstick - and the image of a mysterious stranger is ready!

Option number 2

An even simpler make-up mask, which is created using a completely ordinary arsenal of women's cosmetics. This half mask is suitable for an outfit in dark colors, and will also allow you to create an image in a classic Venetian style. The process of creating a make-up mask will require the following items:

  • black liner;
  • black liquid shadows;
  • brushes;
  • eyelash glue;
  • decorative cord;
  • rhinestone.

Create a mask

  • Step 1. Apply makeup to face and eyelids with a good base. This is how the mask will last the whole evening.
  • Step 2. Mark the mask area with a black liner. Create a basic outline and simulate the slits for the eyes. Shade the entire surface of the mask with the liner.
  • Step 3. Use a brush to paint in black matte or glossy loose or liquid eyeshadows and work well over the surface of the half mask, creating an even coating without streaks.
  • Step 4. Trace the outline of the mask with eyelash glue (tight line). Let dry for the time indicated in the instructions.
  • Step 5. Take a piece of decorative cord and glue it along the contour of the mask, pressing it tightly during the manipulation.
  • Step 6. Dotted glue along the line of the cord and decorate the mask with rhinestones. Put makeup on your lips, tint your eyelashes again and head to the masquerade ball!

Idea # 4: Ice Queen Mask

An unusual mask, as if created from real icicles! Luckily, it won't melt when you enter the party room. In the light of candle lights or electric garlands, it will sparkle with unusual sparks, drawing everyone's attention to the owner of this masquerade splendor. Creating a mask will require you to have the following materials and items:

  • thermal gun;
  • pencil;
  • super glue;
  • rhinestone;
  • varnish with silver shimmer;
  • a sharp knife or scraper;
  • cling film;
  • silicone rubber.

Mask making

  • Step 1. It is best if you have a bobblehead or papier-mâché mask sculpted over your face. Cover the dummy or mask with a layer of cling film.
  • Step 2. Draw the outlines, indicating the future slits for the eyes with a pencil.
  • Step 3. Walk along the drawn lines with a thermal gun, leaving a dense layer of mass.
  • Step 4. Draw a line from the hole for the eye towards the forehead so that it extends beyond the line of the eyebrows. You do not need to be precise - the stripe should imitate a natural ice pattern.
  • Step 5. Create pattern lines by sweeping the thermal gun down and up from the eye slits.
  • Step 6. Make a pattern of "icicles" from the corners of the eyes to the temples. Let the mass solidify.
  • Step 7. Use super glue to mark the dots, and then glue sparkling small rhinestones on them.
  • Step 8. Brush along the stripes with a brush with shimmery varnish to enhance the effect of frosty shine.
  • Step 9. Carefully peel off the mask, separating it from the film.
  • Step 10. Using a scraper, "drill" holes in the temples. This can be done with a sharp knife or scissors, but be careful not to cut the mask. Tie a silicone rubber band.

Idea # 5: A very simple patterned felt mask

Perhaps this is the simplest option for making a mask, which is characterized by minimal labor intensity. Such a product will be up to you, even if you are invited to a masquerade party completely unexpectedly, leaving no time for preparation. The main thing is to have time to run into a creative store to buy one sheet of colored felt. The rest is a matter of fifteen minutes. So, to create a mask, you need:

  • a sheet of felt of a juicy burgundy color;
  • black satin ribbon;
  • sharp nail scissors;
  • a sheet of office paper;
  • tape measure;
  • simple pencil.

Mask making

  • Step 1. Find or draw your own version of the half mask. Beforehand, it is worth taking measurements of the face so that the mask fits perfectly. Draw simple geometric patterns on the surface, trying to make them as small as possible to make the product look sophisticated and festive.
  • Step 2. Cut out the paper template by carefully repeating all the slots. It is convenient to remove the smallest elements with tweezers - this way you will definitely not tear the paper.
  • Step 3. Place the paper template over the piece of felt fabric. Attach the workpiece and carefully trace all the lines with a pencil. Another option is not to cut out small elements from paper, but to pierce them, transferring them pointwise onto felt.
  • Step 4. Cut out the felt mask with nail scissors.
  • Step 5. Measure out two pieces of black satin ribbon, pass through the slots at the temples and make strings.

Paper mask templates for kids

Patterns of openwork masks for the New Year 2019

In the life of every child there are holidays and fun events. To stand out from the rest, it is worth considering a festive outfit. Having made for children, you can get an original and unusual costume. It remains to add details to complete the image and you can go to the party. Let's consider how to make masks correctly.

Superheroes

Well, which of the boys in childhood did not dream of being a superhero? Almost everyone, but did everyone have such an opportunity? A child mask with a superhero emblem is very easy to make. You will need white or colored cardboard, scissors, paints, felt-tip pens and an elastic band. Mark the future workpiece with a pencil and cut it out. After that, start decorating the base, paint with paints of the desired color and add details. Take a look at the photo. This is what a superhero child mask might look like.

Some of them are plain, and they are easier to cut out of colored cardboard. You can paint with paints, fine details are best drawn with a felt-tip pen. It is useful to involve children in this process, it will be very entertaining for them. After completing the registration, you need to thread an elastic band into the workpiece to fix it on the head. In such a bright original mask, the child will feel confident, especially if the other elements of the costume are also finalized.

Carnival

For children, they will become an irreplaceable addition to the image. In such a suit, you can perform at a matinee in a kindergarten or at another festive event. Everything you need for a carnival accessory can be found in any home. So, let's get started, cut out a shape from cardboard with holes for the eyes. You can draw the shape arbitrarily by hand or using a stencil. For children's head masks to be festive, they need to be beautifully decorated. To do this, you can use everything that you can find at home: sequins, rhinestones, beads, rain, feathers, and more. An example of such decorations can be seen in the photo.

You see that the brighter and more colorful, the more beautiful it turns out. You can use felt for the base, it is denser, and it will also keep its shape better. It is better to fix all the jewelry on a hot one. For fixing on the head, you can use an elastic band or glue a stick-holder on the side.

Non-standard solution

Now you will find out for children from improvised means. For example, an option from a paper plate. Materials required:

  • plate;
  • paints;
  • felt-tip pens;
  • scissors;
  • colored cardboard or stickers;
  • elastic.

One plate will make two masks because it is cut in half. Then you need to decide on the theme and start decorating. To make it clearer, you can build on the examples shown in the picture below.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in this process. If you decide to make an image of the animal, then just glue the ears, nose, antennae and the mask is ready. To attach the base, use an elastic band, stick (as in the picture). If you use a colored plate, then there is no need to paint it, and if the plate is white, you will have to paint it. You can involve kids in this process so that everyone is happy.

Soft animals

Felt can be an excellent material as a base for an animal mask for children. It is a soft, dense and natural material found in craft stores. The advantages of felt are its elasticity and the ability to easily cut with scissors. Animals are very good from felt because of the bright colors of the material.

Additional parts are attached to the base with super glue. Due to this, the mask for the child will seem voluminous. To make a secure fit to the head, it is best to use a thin elastic band. You can complement the image with a felt tail and gloves, the baby will definitely not go unnoticed.

Sewn masks

For children, they can become even more interesting and voluminous. The most successful choice will be images of animals. Decide on the image and prepare the necessary materials:

  • the cloth;
  • scissors;
  • synthetic winterizer or cotton wool;
  • beads;
  • fishing line.

Start by making the base. To do this, draw the desired shape on the fabric, cut and sew, leaving holes for the eyes and filler. It is better to sew on the wrong side. After that, you need to turn out the base, fill it with padding polyester or cotton through the hole. After that, you can start making additional parts. It can be ears, nose, eyes. Prepare each part separately, then you need to fill the blank with padding polyester. At the final stage, you need to sew all the details of the future animal with neat stitches. Use a tight elastic band to make the baby mask fit snugly on your face.

Cardboard masks

As you can see, the material for manufacturing can be varied. Some of them are at hand, but often underestimated. You can make not only masks for children from paper, but also from cardboard. This refers to the dense cardboard from which the boxes are made. Everyone in the house probably has a cardboard box for household appliances. This is exactly what you need to create the foundation. The good thing about brown cardboard is that it doesn't need to be painted, which makes it great for the faces of a variety of animals. For example, a cardboard dog face.

Additional details must be attached to such cardboard bases; in the case of a dog's face, a nose, ears, and eyebrows are required. You can use pieces of foam rubber, cotton wool or other bulky material. If you are good at drawing, you can mark the missing details with a black marker: mustache, nose, facial lines. You will also need to secure the fixing elastic band, too thin will not work for this mask. In order for the gum itself to be tightly connected to the cardboard and not to tear the base, you need to know one trick. Pass one end of the elastic through the hole and tie a piece of foam rubber. Do the same on the other side, the muzzle is ready.

Complement the image

The mask is only one of the elements of the children's costume. To harmoniously complete the look, you can decorate the clothes or pick them up to match. It is worth considering the specifics of the image, supplementing it with the necessary attributes. Let's say you need to sew a tail on the pants to the dog's face and put on mittens-paws. For the carnival, you need to decorate a dress or costume with sequins. But you can do without it. Just match your solid color to the base color or some of its elements. A beautiful costume for a child for a holiday does not have to be expensive at all, enough original and thoughtful details.

Before the festive events, it's time to think about the right outfit. And if this is a children's New Year's party, a carnival party or even a masquerade ball, then perhaps the most important accessory of the invented image should be a face mask. Today, you can find many bright and colorful masks on sale and choose the one that suits the chosen outfit. But papier-mâché masks created with your own hands from available materials will look much more harmonious and interesting.

"Papier-mâché" is translated into our language as "torn paper", which fully reflects the essence of this material. Papier-mâché is nothing more than paper pulp with the addition of PVA glue or paste to hold paper together. It is best to use old newspapers for making the mass with your own hands, the paper of which is most suitable for papier-mâché, but in the absence of the proposed material, they can be replaced with toilet paper, paper napkins or towels.

Before you start creating a face mask with your own hands, it is important to worry about choosing a base for it.

For this, a number of methods for the manufacture of various bases can be proposed.:

  1. An old face mask. As a basis, a simple mask can be used without any unnecessary irregularities. Just remember that before covering it with papier-mâché, it is worth wrapping the surface of the old mask with cling film to avoid adhesion of the material to the base.
  2. Inflated balloon. The most suitable base for beginner craftsmen. Thanks to the smooth rubber surface, it will be easy to make the mask, since the papier-mâché will not stick to the base and after the material has set, the balloon can be easily removed.

Papier-mâché face mask

The problem with many purchased carnival masks is that they do not fit tightly to the person's face, which in turn leads to its constant slippage. But during the holiday, you want to have a good time, and not constantly correct the annoying accessory. Therefore, an accessory made with your own hands based on a cast of your face will be an excellent solution, because the mask will not only look original, but the canvas will also sit, which means it will bring less inconvenience.

To make a face cast yourself, you can use sculptural plasticine.

A sufficient amount of material must be thoroughly kneaded in your hands and shaped into a pancake with a layer thickness of about two centimeters. After that, the resulting pancake is applied to the face (before this procedure, it is recommended to lubricate the skin with a cream with an oily texture) and carefully shape the shape of the face to the plasticine.

They remove the plasticine form from the face very carefully so as not to damage the result of the procedure performed, and place it on the work surface. After that, the base for the mask, made by hand, is ready.

But this method has one undoubted drawback - not every person can have sculptural plasticine at hand. Therefore, the basis for manufacturing can be made from a more affordable material - food foil. The foil must be folded several times so that the resulting sheet is hard enough, but at the same time easily takes the required shape. After that, the resulting piece of foil is applied to the face and, using finger pressure, we give the foil the shape of the face.

An almost finished base must be removed if there is any irregularities to be corrected and cuts in the foil for the eyes and nose are made. The resulting shape can be corrected by adding plasticine to it in the right places. After that, the base is wrapped with cling film and it is ready for papier-mâché application.
