Explanatory dictionaries can translate "I love you", but in fact this phrase is not so formal. It can be said to close friends and family members, as well as to loved ones. It does not sound as weighty and does not convey all the passion as a phrase “Ich liebe dich.” That is why it is very unlikely that you will hear this phrase in romantic songs.

Willst du mein Freund/meine Freundin sein?(Will you be my friend/my girlfriend?)

Word Freund can mean either just a friend, or a boyfriend-lover, as well as freundin- just a girlfriend or a girl-lover. All power is in context.

Although if you ask someone to be your Freund/your freundin, then the context is clear. This is one of the most straightforward ways to start a romantic relationship.

If you want to clarify and identify platonic friends, then you better talk about them. “ein Freund/eine Freundin von mir”(my friend/my girlfriend) than “mein Freund/meine Freundin.” Do not forget to express gender in the correct form of the word!

Willst du mit mir gehen?(Will you date me?)

This is an informal proposal just for those who want to avoid the pitfalls of the context and the gender of the phrase “Willst du mein Freund sein?”. By asking this question, you are essentially suggesting that you go on a date to start a relationship. Nena singing a song 99 Luftballoons("99 balloons"), used this phrase as the title of the thirteenth album.

Schatz, Liebling, Kuschelbar(Golden, beloved, teddy bear)

These are all affectionate names, the list of which is endless, ranging from "sweet" and "angel" to "mouse" and "snake." One German politician, the Bavarian minister-president Edmund Stoiber, in one interview called his wife Muschi(kisa). Be careful using this phrase! It contains a much more pronounced sexual connotation than a simple "like" or "love." So it's best never to say something like “Ich steh’ auf meine Oma”(I am infatuated with my grandmother).

Du bist die Liebe meines Lebens.(You are the love of my life.)

This phrase is the most sentimental of the list, and you are unlikely to hear it often because of the deep meaning that it conveys. But if you feel like this is what you need to say auf Deutsch then now you know how.

This phrase can be used as a compliment to someone important to you and as a way to pick someone up in the club. And as always, all the “salt” is in the context.

Kuss mich.(Kiss Me.)

This is the only phrase from the list in the imperative form: Kiss me! It is easy to use imperative forms in German because for a pronoun du, usually it is only necessary to remove the -en ending from the verb. If you want to be less direct and demanding, you can achieve the same result with the phrase “Kann ich einen Kuss haben?”(Will you kiss me?) If you are lucky, then you will fall.
