The master class "Carnival mask" is intended for students over 12 years old (In accordance with the theme of the lesson 4 quarters of the subject of the MHC grade 8.) Can be used in extracurricular activities to consolidate the material, in order to decorate the interior or make masks for theatrical activities.

Target:Development of creativity, through familiarity with the culture and customs of other countries.
Tasks:
- Introduce the concepts of "Venetian mask" and "carnival".
- Develop painting skills, in compliance with the laws of composition on complex shapes;
- To acquaint students with the papier-mâché technique;
- To cultivate respect for the culture of other countries, curiosity and patience.

Carnival in Venice is one of the most anticipated events of the year, both for the inhabitants of this ancient city and for tourists. Carnival is a fancy-dress holiday before the beginning of Lent before Easter. A mask means a disguise, it is an item that is worn in order to be unrecognizable. Real Venetian masks are handmade creations made from papier-mâché. At the Venice Carnival, masks were required, and the traditional masks of the carnival in Venice themselves are divided into two groups: the masks of the Del Arte comedy, which means the comedy of masks, and the classic masks. It is not surprising that in the 15th century there was a whole profession, the profession of a mask-maker.
The classic Venetian masks include the Bauta masks (the name of this mask most likely comes from the name of a fictional character who frightened children, like the Russian Babai or Buka. This mask always has only two colors - white and black).

Venetian lady (there are several varieties).

Cat, Doctor of the Plague (at that time, doctors, entering the premises where patients with the plague were, wore masks with a long nose, which was of quite practical importance, there were a variety of herbs and aromatic substances, the task of which was, as it was believed, to protect the doctor from plague infection).

and Volto (the most neutral mask, it copied the shape of a human face and was attached to the head with ribbons (or some Volto masks had a handle on the chin).

This mask has another name - Citizen.
We will make this type of mask.

Materials:
Paper (any: writing, for printers, newsprint)
Printed sheet with notes;
PVA glue;
Gouache or acrylic paints;
Brushes (# 5 or # 6 and # 1 or # 2);
Blank for papier mache "Venetian mask" made of plastic.

Manufacturing process:

1. Put on the mask two layers of paper moistened with water without glue, so that the mask can be easily removed from the mold.

2. Grease the next layers of paper with PVA glue. The process is easier, if the paper is already wet, then the pieces are easier to tear off and lay smoother. Then we just grease the layer itself with glue.

3. The work is painstaking and takes about 20-30 minutes. But if you are planning multiple masks or adjusting the shape, it will save you significant money.

4. I used newspaper and paper alternately. This makes it easier to see if the layers are evenly stacked.

5. For the last two layers, it is best to use white paper. Also, cover the last layer with PVA glue. In total, I got 7 layers. If the mask is not for the interior, (a performance or a masquerade ball), then you need at least 10 layers of paper.

6. Dry the mask with the form. I just left her overnight by the window.

7.After drying, the mask can be easily removed from the mold.

8.Remove the mask and trim the edges with scissors if necessary.

9.Check for any roughness or scratching on the inside of the paper.

10.Cover the mask with white gouache paint.

11.

12.

13.

14. Draw arbitrary patterns with a pencil.

15.

16.

17.

18. It is best to keep the lines as thin as possible.

19 Take a printout with notes.

20. Using the breaking method, we make several arbitrary pieces.

21. We cover them with PVA glue on top, too, so that the printer or printing ink does not rub off.

22. We glue pieces of music paper in several places.

23. We take shades of mother-of-pearl or paint with a metallic sheen (if any).

24. A mask, completely painted with paints of pearlescent tint, will look spectacular in the interior under different lighting conditions.

25. Apply a golden color to some areas of the mask, on one side. According to our idea, the mask will be painted in any form (both sides will be different).
26. Take gouache paints (You can continue with acrylic paints).

27. It is better to choose several shades of color and alternate them for a color sparkling effect.

28. We put on a brush of red gouache.

29. Fill in the gaps of the curls, trying to gently slide over the shape of the mask.

30. Often the intended pencil drawing does not match the subsequent brush strokes. Or the idea changes during the process.

31. We try to keep one side of the mask warm and the other cold.

32. Type on the brush with white gouache.

33. Add white dots and lines.

34. We take the lilac color.

35.Add free-form purple curls.

36. We take black gouache.

37. With a thin brush, repeat the lines in the shape of the face, avoiding the repetition of facial wrinkles.

The history of masquerade masks is closely related to the history of the Carnival holiday. During this religious holiday, which took place before Lent, people gathered in the streets, dressed in different costumes. The costumes were accompanied by masks of different colors and sizes. The masks were simple and covered the half of the face of the wearer. Often, they had a handle to hold the mask by. Today, masks are worn at masquerade parties and on Halloween. Follow some simple steps to make your masquerade mask.

Steps

Mask made of paper or cardboard

Choose a pattern for your mask. The simplest mask starts slightly above the eyebrows and ends at the cheekbones, but your mask does not have to be like that.

    • Regular masks are oval and elongated horizontally, with a small nasal bump. More specific masks may cover most of the cheeks and forehead, and may be tapered on either side. You can find many interesting ideas for your mask on the internet. You should also decide what material your mask will be made of.
  1. Draw or print the outline of your mask. To make your mask harder, use cardboard or many layers of paper glued on top of each other.

    • It is desirable that the outline is clear and that there is a lot of pure white in the middle. Use regular printing paper. A smaller sheet may not be enough for you, but a larger one will be a waste of paper.
  2. Add more detail to the outline. This way, you will decide if you like the shape of your mask.

    • You can add flames or blooms to the outline of the mask to vary its shape and make it more interesting. You can also add hearts, stars, geometric shapes, and more.
  3. Cut out the mask. Be careful! Use only good scissors to avoid creating bumps on the mask. Leave some space on the sides of the mask so you can tie an elastic band or some kind of pen.

    • Make the eye holes larger than your eyes. The larger visual space makes the mask safer, more comfortable and more beautiful.
  4. Mark how you will paint the mask. This way you will avoid bad staining of the mask. Make your markings less visible so you can paint over them.

    • Pre-designed mask design, and pre-rehearsed mask design, will help you make your mask more beautiful. You can use many colors and patterns.
  5. Color the mask. Be careful when staining. Touching wet paint can ruin it and get dirty. To achieve a vibrant color, use multiple layers of color.

    • You can choose what color you paint your mask in. Some of the traditional colors are red and metallic. Use a small paintbrush to add detail to the drawing.
  6. Let the paint dry. Please be patient, this may take a while. Place the mask on a flat surface in an open area and let it dry.

    • Depending on the paint you use, the mask can take up to 4 hours to dry.
  7. Glue on the decorations. You decide how to decorate the mask again, but try not to overload the mask with decorations.

    • Masquerade masks are usually very bright, so you can add rhinestones, sequins and colorful feathers. Use jewelry so that the mask doesn't look too full.
  8. Color and decorate the handle to match the mask. For the pen, you can use Chinese sticks, a straw, or well-wound cardboard.

    • You can decorate the pen of your mask with feathers, beads, leaves, or whatever you wish.
  9. Attach the handle to the mask. You can glue the handle with a hot gun or any other glue.

    • It doesn't matter where the handle is. There are masks that have a handle in the middle, others have it on one side, and there are masks without any handles.
  10. Let the glue dry completely. Hold the pen against the mask for 30 seconds to make sure it holds well. If it moves, add more glue.

    • Wave your mask a little. If she sits firmly on the handle, then she is ready!

Mask with tulle or sheer fabric

    1. Print the template. Using this method, print a detailed pattern of your mask. This procedure will take a little of your time. Try to make the template as detailed as possible.

      • Place the template on the table. The table should have more free space than the template paper takes up.
    2. Glue a piece of plastic onto your mask. The mask should be covered on all sides and should not move under the plastic.

      • If the plastic wiggles, glue the edges to the table.
    3. Glue the tulle onto the plastic. The tulle should be much larger than your pattern.

      • If you don't have tulle, you can use sheer fabric, but tulle is easier to work with as it is harder.
    4. Color the mask. If this is your first mask, it is best to use one color. Be careful not to touch or ruin the paint.

      • If you use more than one color, keep in mind that paints may mix where they join.
      • Leave the mask to dry overnight.
    5. Cut out the mask. Remove the tulle carefully from the table when it is completely dry. Cut the mask carefully, and cut out the holes for the eyes.

    6. Attach the tape to the edges of the mask. Cut off two 30cm pieces of tape. Put some glue on one edge of each tape, and stick to the mask. Let the glue dry for a couple of hours.

      • You can make the ribbons shorter if you wish, just be sure you can tie them around your head.

    Plaster mask

    1. Start shaping your mask. Cut and wet pieces of plaster. Lay the first two pieces diagonally so that they lie on the nose.

      • Use as many pieces of plaster as needed to complete your mask. Be careful with the cast around the eyes, make the holes larger than your eyes.

New Years is soon! Let's make a mask for the New Year's holiday! Although, of course, the mask can be worn not only for the New Year holidays. I even read somewhere about a wedding ceremony where all the guests were wearing masks, including the bride and groom!

And after the holiday, you can use the mask as an element of interior decor.

You can get inspired by ideas on the website.

Materials:

  • Priming
  • Acrylic paint (white and gold)
  • Glass outline (white)
  • Lace
  • Rhinestones
  • Glue (Moment-Crystal)
  • Acrylic varnish
  • Glue gun
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Brush

This is the mask we will decorate

Cover with soil

After the soil has dried, we paint over the surface from the face and seamy side with white paint and leave it to dry (if you have a blank, like mine, from papier-mâché, then it is better to dry by putting the mask on, for example, on a glass - otherwise it may deform)

While the mask is drying, prepare the lace. Lace must be taken very embossed - otherwise, when painting, its texture will be smeared with paint

"Dismembering" lace into separate elements

Cutting off unnecessary "membranes" - braids

We continue to dismember the lace into separate parts: I only need the upper part

We glue a piece of lace onto the mask. We begin to glue from the middle of the bridge of the nose - for symmetry

Add different lace elements to your taste

I decided to stop at this - I am always afraid to overdo it

Draw with a pencil "eyelashes" and other elements that we will draw with a contour

Outline the resulting sketch

If it seems to you that the volume is not enough - after drying, go through the already drawn outline drawing again - with a second layer, making it more voluminous

After drying, paint the mask with gold paint. Try to get into all the grooves of the lace so that the white color does not appear anywhere on it. The paint can be slightly thinned with water - the thinner it will better fill the lace sections. but do not overdo it - our task is to preserve the textured drawing.

It is better to leave part of the mask unpainted, making an easy transition from gold to white with a sponge.

After the gold paint has dried, tint the protruding elements with white paint using a hard brush. To do this, dip the brush in white paint, lubricate almost all the paint from the brush on an unnecessary sheet, and carefully apply tint with an almost dry brush.

We cover with acrylic varnish

For decoration on the wrong side, we glue ordinary lace

Crop it around the edge of the mask

Cut out the eyes

And tint with gold paint

It turns out this is such an interesting texture.

We glue the edge of the mask with a cord. It is better to start from one of the corners where the strings will be attached.

Result

We glue the rhinestones. Where to glue - your imagination will tell you! Can be replaced with half beads.

We fasten the ties. We put a golden elastic band through the holes

Pull it slightly, put a crimp on both laces and clamp it with a plier. I bought crimp in a regular sewing accessories store, in the section with all sorts of beads. If you do not have a creampie, then you can simply glue the elastic bands and wrap with gold thread or wire.

Cut off the short tail of the elastic

I also fixed the cream on the end of the elastic. You can decorate with a bead, or just tie a knot (grease with glue so that the elastic does not start to open)

For any costume ball or New Year's holiday, it is customary to wear masquerade masks to the carnival costume of a fairy-tale character. They are different: paper, fabric, durable, made of papier-mâché, plastic, etc. Depending on the role chosen, masks can have additional decorative elements - feathers, animal ears, mustaches, sequins and rhinestones, fabric inserts, flounces and lace. The color of the masks must match the appearance of the character.

In the article, we will focus the readers' attention on how to make a paper mask with your own hands, how to draw a template for crafts, what additional details will be needed to complete the image.

How to prepare a template?

The eye holes must be in the correct position for the mask to be comfortable. If you are making a mask for your child for a matinee in kindergarten or a New Year's holiday at school, then you need to know the principles of its manufacture. Before drawing a template, you need to take measurements from the child's face. The distance from the center of one eye to the center of the other is measured in a straight line. Then you need to measure the distance from the left temple to the right.

The sizes are transferred to thick paper. Then they begin to draw the actual mask. The center bottom edge of the craft should not be below the tip of the nose. This advice only applies to the standard masquerade mask that covers the eyes, as in the photo of the template in the article. The side edges of the craft can be different - rounded, square, narrowed with sharp corners.

The eye holes are also made in different ways. If this is an animal, then the eyes can be made round, often making them slanting and beautifully curved. At the ends of the mask, holes are made with an awl for an elastic band or a tie, so that it is more convenient to wear the product at the celebration. There are masks that are carried in the hand and shaped on a thin stick on one side. But this option is more suitable for an adult party; it is not recommended for a child to make such a mask.

Decorating the mask

You already understood how to make a paper mask with your own hands. But it is not enough just to draw and cut it by threading an elastic band. You also need to show the skill of the artist and decorate the product with taste, painting the mask with paints. It is best to use gouache paints, but in order for the child not to stain his hands and the rest of the costume, it is necessary to subsequently open it with varnish.

The already lacquered surface is covered with additional elements - beads, tinsel or stones and rhinestones. Consider decorating to match your child's gender. Decorations on the boy's mask should not contain hearts and flowers. It is enough to attach a shiny edging around the perimeter of the craft or add Christmas tree tinsel.

How to make a papier-mâché pattern?

Now we will consider the option of how to make a paper mask with your own hands in the form of papier-mâché. Many craftsmen are familiar with this technique of layer-by-layer pasting of the template with pieces of newspaper or other paper. A natural paste made from flour is used. But how can you create a template if you are not looking at an empty plate or jug and your child's face? You need to stick to some rules and everything will go great. First, you need to explain to the baby that his mask will be the most original and comfortable, since the measurements will exactly match the facial features. Secondly, be sure to lubricate the glued areas with glycerin or baby cream so that the flour paste does not stick to the baby's skin and cause discomfort.

Thirdly, be careful when pasting paper over the face: the eyes and nose should remain open, the paste should in no case be liquid and drip from the forehead onto the eyes. It is necessary to remove excess moisture with a napkin. During drying, at least the bottom layer must dry so that the template can be removed from the face without damaging the shape, you need to play with the child, occupy him with something, read a book or, in extreme cases, put him in a comfortable position and turn on the cartoon. Then be sure to thank the child for his patience with something tasty and loved.

Paper mask by pattern

After drying, the mask is removed from the child's face. Wash the skin thoroughly. Then, on the dried papier-mâché template, you can additionally glue the missing layers or details, for example, create ears or a long beak, depending on the appearance of the character.

When the papier-mâché is completely dry, and this process can take quite a lot of time - from 3 to 5 days, the mask must be carefully trimmed, giving it the correct shape. Then get to painting the background and drawing small features of the character.

Animal mask made of paper

If you decide to make a mask for the holiday in the image of an animal, then other drawn elements are added to the standard form of the craft, made according to the measurements of the child. These can be ears of the appropriate shape, the shape of the coat, horns, etc.

You can immediately draw a nose, stripes on the body, spots on the fur on the template with a simple pencil, and then simply paint over them with paints. If you do not know how to draw, do not be upset, because the worldwide network will always help. It is enough to give a request and print the coloring of the given animal. All that remains is to redraw the contours or re-blend the image onto the template.

How to color a mask?

How to make a paper mask with your own hands is clear, let's look at the samples in the photo below, how the characters can be colored. Instead of gouache, wax crayons were used. The image is also bright and colorful.

In this way, you can clearly draw the fur of the animal, every feather of the bird, and even such drawings can not be opened with varnish, because they will not get your hands dirty anyway.

Favorite hero

Many boys and girls want to play the role of their favorite character in cartoons and films - Spider-Man at the holiday. Such a mask should be red and have a painted cobweb.

The Spider-Man mask made of paper is made according to a template, only its edges rise in a smooth bend upward. When painting, the narrowed cutouts of the eyes are outlined first with white and then with black edging. On the rest of the mask on a red background, the cells of the cobweb are drawn with a black marker. You can make a blue mask for the boy.

As you can see from the article, it's not difficult to make a mask for a child or yourself for a holiday on your own. So do not worry, and feel free to get to work, you will definitely succeed.
