To create four tubes, take a double sheet of newspaper and divide it horizontally into four equal parts (cut with scissors or tear).

Place the knitting needle on the lower right edge, at an angle of 20 degrees. Lightly treat the tip of the paper strip with glue, and then begin to tightly twist the newspaper sheet onto the knitting needle.

When the surface of the knitting needle is finished, continue to roll the newspaper with your fingers. Apply a little glue to the free end and press it onto the tube with your fingers.

Repeat the same with the remaining newspaper strips.

Helpful tip: Practice making newspaper tubes in advance. How to weave the bottom of a basket

Lubricate the edge of the element with glue and attach it to another newspaper tube (in the picture the length of the material is 25 cm). Fasten with a clothespin for better fixation. Attach two more corner tubes with glue.

Make the required number of strips with four tubes: as many as needed for the bottom of the basket.

Glue together two larger tubes (51 centimeters in the photo). Prepare more newspaper strips (75 cm in the photo).

Lay out the paired strips as shown in the photo.

Take single newspaper tubes and begin to braid paired strips with them: bend the bottom one from the bottom, the top one from the outside. Place the next 25 cm long element and do the same procedure until all the strips with four tubes are used.

When the bottom is ready, cut off the edges of the four-piece strips to make the bottom even. The protruding free edges of the remaining tubes must be used in the side parts of the basket to weave the walls.

Basket wall weaving

To make the walls of the basket, take a square box that is the right size. Prepare glue with newspaper tubes and clothespins. On the sides of the cardboard container, glue two tubes side by side at a distance of about 5-7 centimeters. Also mark the perimeter with newspaper tubes.

Start weaving: take a couple of paper tubes, glue their ends, as shown in the second photo, they should be located perpendicular to the paired newspaper elements. First, insert a couple of tubes of newspaper under the side materials, then put them on top, and thread them again at the bottom. Hide the ends behind the previous row and secure with glue.

The next pair of tubes will be attached in a mirror way: first they are placed on top, then threaded through from below, etc.

After you have braided the box from all sides and the desired height of the product has been achieved, you need to trim the end of one element in the pair, which was originally attached to the sides. Insert a newspaper tube with a long edge under each next one so as to hide the “chopped off” tip.

When all the free ends of the side elements are pulled out, continue to braid them around the edge of the basket. Hide the short free edges of the newspaper tubes under the previous row, fixing them with a small amount of glue. Secure the result with clothespins so that the glue adheres better. When the edges of the basket are ready, attach the bottom, make a lid, and handles.

Making pens

On both sides, at the top edge of the basket, at an equal distance from the sides, thread two newspaper tubes. Throw those that remain inside over the wall to the outer end of the elements and go around the strips from above. Repeat similarly with the second pair of tubes.
Generously coat the edges of the twisted materials with glue and fasten them together with a clothespin. Wait for the adhesive base to dry.
To hide a sloppy joint, apply a fresh layer of glue and wrap another strip of paper around it. Handles are ready!

Making a lid

Take flat cardboard of the required size, using a stationery knife or other tool, make small holes on the side, as shown in the photo. Insert tubes into the holes on all sides.

Start braiding the edge of the lid, bending one end of the paper element after the other, as seen in the photo: this is how you need to weave the desired number of rows. When finished, the free edges of the tubes are hidden under the lid.

Decorate the finished lid as desired: with leftover French braided newspapers, ribbons, decoupage or other decorative elements.

What paper should I use for weaving?

First of all, we suggest you pay attention to old newspapers; the density of such paper is very small, which makes it easy to roll them into tubes or cut them into ribbons and only then use them for weaving. Magazine sheets are very thick and often glossy, this will complicate the work, but at the same time the craft will be stronger.

An unusual type of paper is cash register tape; it is easy to use, as it is soft and strong. In addition, it is very easy to repaint it in a different color, as well as twist it into identical and even tubes.

A4 office sheets are also suitable, although they are quite thick and rough. The big advantage of this material is that it comes in different colors, which means that you don’t have to additionally paint it in the desired color.

Basic methods of weaving paper crafts

There are two main options for weaving, for example, such crafts as: basket, box and piggy bank - made from paper vine or small strips. To create a vine, just roll a newspaper into a thin and dense tube. More complex crafts, in the form of snakes or abstractions, are still better made from strips.

In addition to cellulose materials, you need to prepare a few additional tools, such as: wooden or iron knitting needles, some glue, scissors, a long ruler, a simple pencil and clothespins.

How to prepare tubes for products?

As we mentioned earlier, before you start weaving, you need to prepare several tubular blanks. Get started using newspaper sheets, they make the simplest paper vine. Be sure to lubricate the ends with glue so that the tube does not unwind.

Use a thin knitting needle for the base; wrap a paper strip about 9 centimeters wide around it. This way, each piece will be as thin as possible and similar to each other. Try to pull everything as tightly as possible, do not forget to lubricate the edges of the vine. Immediately after finishing twisting, pull out the knitting needle, otherwise it will stick.

How to prepare strips of paper?

You can make crafts with your own hands not only from tubes, but also from strips. It is necessary to prepare strips up to 15 mm thick - if they are magazines, and up to 30 mm - if they are newspapers, but be sure to fold them in half.

Did you get short strips? No problem, just glue them together, then you won’t have to add new pieces while weaving.

The first work will not be straight, in the future this can be easily corrected with a ruler. Measure and cut all ribbons to the same width and with sharp scissors so that there are even edges.

Step-by-step process of weaving a basket from paper tubes

You already know how to create tubes for weaving; prepare 10 of them. Try to make them as long as possible, you can even combine several pieces into one, you can always cut off the excess.

To create the bottom, place four tubes, and three more on top of them, then start braiding the bottom one in a circle. When everything is fastened with one skein, start the second, but first straighten all the vines into separate rays. Continue wrapping, you need to make another 4-5 turns so that the bottom is flat and strong. From this moment, start bending all the rays to the top; for convenience, place the workpiece on a jar or flower pot and braid it.

To finish the basket, fold the edges inward and make a loop to connect to the adjacent tube.

The basket is almost ready, all that remains is to build a handle; it is made separately and then glued to the basket or sewn with thread. For the handle you need four vines, two lie parallel, and the other two intertwine them.

We weave a basket, but from strips

As in the previous version, you need to make blanks. For one side you will need 8 strips 32 cm long and 2 cm wide. In total, you have 16 strips on both sides, it is advisable to make 8 of one color and 8 of another, this will make the basket more beautiful and easier to weave.

Intertwine all the strips so that you have a square in the center. The loose and outer strips must be lifted up and weaving continued. To keep the sides in place, secure the sides with a clothespin or paper clip, as shown in the photo.

You have small pieces of loose strips left on top, cut off the excess and make them the same length, then all that remains is to bend the flat branches and glue them with glue.

Paper bookmarks woven from strips

You need to prepare two, preferably colored, strips of paper 1 cm wide and fold them in half, but at an angle of about 45 degrees. Connect the folded corners, but so that they do not touch the edge of the strip on the opposite side. The beginning has been made, all that remains is to repeat the weaving.

First of all, decide on the size of the shoe sole. The base is made of thick cardboard, and to secure the paper tubes, make holes along the edges using an awl. The distance between the holes is about 1.5-2 cm.

Insert the prepared paper vine into the prepared holes and secure them with glue. In our case, about 20-30 tubes were needed.

As is already clear, paper should be prepared for work. You should have PVA glue, a wooden skewer or knitting needle to make the tubes, scissors with a ruler and pencil, a couple of clothespins and a container that you need to braid.

Ribbons, bows, flowers, beads or beads are suitable as decoration for crafts. To decorate the finished item, you need to prepare a cardboard sheet from which the base of the craft is made, as well as a needle and thread, an awl, and a brush with acrylic paint.

To weave any product, you will need to make tube blanks in the form of a paper vine. Before making crafts, pay attention to the strength and ductility of the blanks, decide on the width and type of paper, the reliability of your product will depend on this.

Let's get to work. Take a knitting needle number 3, cut the paper into strips 9 cm thick. Don’t be lazy and use a pencil with a ruler so you don’t have to redo the work later.

Place the knitting needle on the end of the strip and wind the strip onto it, the tighter the better. Drop a little glue onto the corner of the tube and glue the end of the workpiece together, while removing the knitting needle. You will need a lot of blanks for the craft, it all depends on the size of the desired product.

For the craft you will need not only tube-shaped blanks, but also strips. We cut newspapers, magazines or plain paper into strips of the required thickness. It is advisable to form strips up to 1.5 cm. Simply cut glossy magazine sheets into strips, and we recommend folding newspaper sheets in half for greater strength and maintaining the shape of the product. For example, to make a basket or box, you need to cut newspaper paper into 3 cm wide instead of 1.5 cm.

If the leaf is not long enough, glue several strips together so that you don’t have to add paper during weaving.

In order for the product to acquire a neat and even appearance, it is advisable to use a ruler, well-sharpened scissors and a pencil. Mark equal sections on paper, and then cut with scissors.

To weave a basket, it is worth preparing blank tubes. You will need approximately 10 blanks for the base and uprights of the basket. At the beginning of the manufacturing process, extend the tubes by connecting two at a time and secure them with glue.

We place five blanks on the table surface, retreating 0.5 cm from each other. Press all the blanks with a ruler, lift 3 blanks up through one, and drop glue on the rest from below and place the 6th tube on top.

Lower the raised pieces, do the same process with the remaining strips below, add the 7th tube. By analogy, use the blanks that remain.

The frame of 10 blanks is ready, now we take 1 tube, turn it at an angle of 90 degrees and intertwine it. We repeat the steps with other blanks. After weaving all the tubes, a round base of the basket is obtained. Don't forget to add the length of the vine.

We place a jar or flower pot on the bottom and, using clothespins, lift the workpieces upward and continue to weave the craft vertically. Having reached the required size of the basket, we decorate the edge of the product. We bend the ends of the workpiece inward, while circling the nearest tube. We insert the edge of the workpiece into the loop. We carry out these steps until the last tube remains, which should be inserted into the loop formed by the initial one.

We form a handle for the basket. We twist a couple of blanks together, glue them to the craft or sew them with thread.

Instead of tubes for weaving, you can use strips of paper, but as thick as possible. We prepare 8 pieces of strips 32 cm long and 2 cm wide. We recommend taking multi-colored strips (blue and yellow) to make the basket original.

We place 4 yellow stripes on the table and weave 4 blue strips into them. The square should be placed in the center of the strips and be strong.

To form the sides, bend the branches upward and continue weaving until the desired size of the product. We fold the remaining strips inward and glue them. Then we form a handle for the basket from the strips.

If you have children who are in school, then you can not buy bookmarks, but make them yourself. Your child will also enjoy this activity.

Cut a wide strip of paper and fold it in half. On the fold we draw triangles every 1 cm so that their tops do not touch the opposite edge of the strip. We cut the strip without touching the top of the triangles. We unfold the workpiece, cut out the previous strip of a different color. We weave it into the gaps that were formed on the first workpiece. Finally, glue the ends of the craft together with glue.

Experiment with colors and patterns, then you will get original bookmarks. The pattern can be in the form of droplets, hearts or animal figures.

An elementary method of forming a box is to weave the box with paper tubes.

Select a box of the desired size and glue it to the base of the workpiece. Then we bend the racks up and attach them with clothespins. We unhook one piece at a time and weave the tubes in a horizontal position, wrapping around the entire box. The weaving ends by twisting one piece of the adjacent tube, tucking its edge into the resulting loop. We repeat the weaving for the lid of the box.

We paint the craft in any color and decorate it with beads, ribbons or beads. We glue velvet or silk fabric into the inside of the box.

First you need to form the base of the shoe from cardboard. Next, use an awl to pierce holes through 2 cm of the front of the shoe and through 1.5 cm of the heel.

There should be 2 holes on the toe of the shoe into which blanks (30 pieces) are inserted and glued.

The racks must be braided in a circle with tubes. We weave 2 tiers, attach a clothespin to the toe of the boot on 2 central posts and weave further.

At level 8 we weave 2 racks together from one edge and then from the other. We close 2 racks on both sides, then one at a time, you should have 12 blanks left for the boot tongue.

We interweave vertical blanks with horizontal levels. We wrap the edges and glue them. To make a beautiful shoe, it is pasted over with pieces of blanks, painted, varnished and the entire craft is decorated.

We weave the walls. To do this, we take a tube, fix its edge at the base of one of the racks and begin to weave it around the racks. When the length of the tube does not allow you to continue weaving, you need to increase the newspaper vine. Important! When you twist the tubes, one end is narrower than the other. Accordingly, when connecting, the narrow tip is inserted into a wide hole.

In this master class we will talk about how to learn how to weave a basket from rectangular, square or round paper.

For work we will need:

Kraft paper - you can also take baking paper, several paper bags, packaging mailing paper, pages of newspapers, magazines, etc.;
2 identical bases made of thick cardboard or fiberboard, cut in a square or rectangular shape - you can choose cardboard if you want to weave just a basket just for storage, and if you like the idea of a tray basket like in this master class, then use size 24 fiberboard ×38 cm, thickness 2.5 mm.

Important: if you want to weave a basket with higher walls than in our tutorial, then you will need some kind of auxiliary template, for example, a shoebox. The template will help you weave a basket of the correct rectangular shape. The cardboard base in this case should correspond to the size of the box.

Wooden kebab skewer or thin knitting needle;
Scissors;
Any paper glue and stronger glue, for example, “Moment”, as well as double-sided tape;
Transparent matte water-based acrylic varnish in a spray or can;
Long narrow leather belt (preferably size XL);
8 brass cap nuts, 8 brass flat head Phillips screws, 8 brass washers (sold in hardware stores, the whole set of fasteners will cost you about 70 rubles);
An electric drill or awl to make holes in the leather belt;

Instructions

Step 1. Making tubes

To do this, you first need to cut the paper into equal sizes, for example, A4 or A5. Suppose you chose old newspapers to make a basket, which already have the size we need. Next we need to cut the newspaper pages into strips - future tubes. Here's how to do it quickly:

Open the newspaper completely, then fold it in half lengthwise and press the fold.
Now take a kitchen or utility knife and cut the newspaper at the fold. It is advisable that the cut areas be smooth and not frayed.
Separate half of the resulting stack of paper, bend it lengthwise and cut it again. You will get strips about 10 cm wide. Now carry out the same procedure with the remaining stack of paper.
Next, sort out those strips that have light edges without text or pictures - it is from these strips that you will get white tubes. They are more convenient for work, because they are easier to paint to resemble rattan or wicker. But this does not mean that you cannot use colored strips; it is simply advisable to first coat the tubes twisted from them with light paint, or paint them more densely (we’ll talk about the nuances of painting below).
So, let's start twisting the tubes. Place a wooden skewer on the very edge of the strip (but not on the white one!) at a minimal (!) angle and try to tightly screw the paper onto it (photos 1 and 2). At first, this can be done on the table, twisting the skewer and holding the paper, and when you reach the middle of the tube, you can lift it up and continue twisting.

When you only have the tip left, you need to lightly grease it with glue and only then screw it to the end (photo 3). Woo-ala, the first tube is ready! All that remains is... to wind another 100-500 of these tubes (the exact number depends on the size of the basket). Don't be afraid, it's not that difficult or time-consuming, but patience will help here.

So, we have learned the basic way to make tubes from newspapers. However, let's get back to the instructions.

In this master class, the decorator first wound only 24 tubes from strips of kraft paper (7x45 cm in size), and then about 120 larger tubes (from strips 7x90 cm in size). Why did he do this? Read on.

Step 2. Making the frame

Next we need to make the frame of the basket. To do this, take a base made of cardboard or hardboard and, using double-sided tape or glue, attach the tubes to it, maintaining the same interval between them (2-5 cm). You should end up with approximately the same design as in the photo below, but the exact number of tubes depends on the size of your base and the chosen spacing.

These tubes are called vertical posts, since later they will “stand” and serve as the frame of the future basket.

According to the decorator's idea, the main weaving of the basket should be deliberately rough, so thicker tubes were used for the walls. However, these 24 stand tubes are made thin to make them easier to braid later. You can repeat the designer’s technique, or you can weave a basket from identical tubes.
If desired, the cardboard or fiberboard base can be pre-upholstered with fabric, such as linen.

Step 3. Start weaving

The base is ready, which means it’s time to start weaving! There are a lot of weaving methods, we suggest mastering the most basic one – “rope”.

Bend the tube in half and wrap it around any vertical tube stand (you can start from anywhere);
Then cross the ends of the tube as shown in the photo below. You will have your first loop.

Then wrap the second post and cross the ends again. You will get the first eight.
Continue weaving until the horizontal tubes run out. As soon as this happens, drop a little PVA glue inside each and insert new tubes to a depth of 2-3 cm (their tips can be slightly bent).
Thus, you need to weave 7 rows if you want to make a low basket like in our master class.

If you want to weave a basket with higher walls, then after the first two or three rows you need to use a template box and weave around it. In this case, you should periodically correct the weaving - align the racks, compact the woven rows, etc. For convenience, the racks can be fixed in a vertical position using clothespins, as shown in the picture on the right. By the way, if you want to weave a round basket, then a saucepan, round box, flowerpot, etc. will work as a template.

Step 4. Finish weaving

Finally, we completed the last row, trimmed and adjusted everything, and took out the box template. Now we need to finish the job beautifully. To do this, we simply cut off the horizontal tubes with which we wove the walls, leaving only 5-10 cm of their length, and hide the ends inside the weaving (left photo below).

Great, now let's get to the racks. You can simply cut them off, lightly smearing the edges with glue, or make a simple but beautiful edging:

Bend the first vertical post 90 degrees and braid it behind the adjacent post on the right, then bring it along the outside of the third post. And finally hide it behind it and glue it. Repeat with the next upright and all the others.

Step 5. Apply varnish

Hooray! The basket is almost ready, all that remains is to coat it with varnish. This tutorial uses acrylic spray varnish, but you can go over your braid with a brush.

If desired/necessary, the basket can be painted before applying varnish, but it is best to paint the tubes before weaving begins - this way the coating will be of a higher quality. Water-based acrylic paints are ideal for painting; they will give the paper density and dry quickly. Step 6. Attach the handles

Cut off the buckle and the end with the holes from the belt. Then cut the middle part of the belt into two equal parts. This is what you should get.

On the back of the resulting strips, use a marker to mark the location of 2 screws at each end of the two strips.

Use a power drill, awl, or just a nail to make holes in the strips at each mark (8 holes total).

On the front side of the tape, place a washer on the hole made, screw the screws into them using a screwdriver.

Next, attach the handles to the outside of the basket. Each fastening screw must fit between two rows of weaving as shown in the next right photo. Then, from the inside of the basket, screw the end caps onto each of the 8 screws.
