Nothing more than the usual marketing ploy, these numbers do not mean.

What is special about sunscreen spf 50? As we know from physics lessons, there are two types of ultraviolet radiation: UVA and UVB. Both types hit our skin along with the warm and pleasant rays of the sun. However, while UVB rays only penetrate the upper layers of the skin, causing sunburn, freckles, darkening, UVA rays penetrate deep layers and lead not only to premature aging, but also to visible damage. This includes wrinkles, moles, and even cancerous skin changes.

All sunscreens for the face provide protection from both the negative effects of UVB and UVA. The difference lies in the amount of time you can safely spend in the sun. That is, the higher the number, the longer you can not be afraid of skin damage. This is justified by the special composition of creams.

You can calculate the allowable time spent in the sun, as well as the required level of protection, using a special scheme. To do this, take into account your facial skin phototype and the allowable time spent in the sun without protection, multiplied by the number that is indicated on the package after the letters spf. For example, if you have the lightest skin type, then your safe time in the sun is only no more than 5 minutes. This means that the allowable time with spf 50 cream is 5 * 50 = 250 minutes.

A cream with protection from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation should be selected individually, taking into account your skin phototype. Remember, the lighter the skin phototype (see the diagram for more details), the more protection is required. Blond people are the most sensitive to sunburn, so it is not recommended for them to sunbathe without a cream with maximum protection.

To choose the necessary protective face cream marked “spf”, you need to take into account not only your light type or phototype, but also the composition of the product itself. For example, manufacturers often include cheap oils, silicone or waxes in the composition, which is not suitable for problem skin. In addition, the composition may contain natural useful products that cause allergies, for example, honey, citrus extracts, plant extracts.

However, the main question about the composition of such funds remains, what provides such special protection? Let's say right away that you should not think that these are herbal or natural ingredients. No. Such UV protection is provided by powerful chemical compounds. Therefore, even in those products that are referred to as natural, they are necessarily present. Consider the approximate composition of the protective components in more detail:

  • cinnamates - the main substances that absorb ultraviolet radiation;
  • benzophenones (sulisobenzone or oxybenzone) - substances that provide protection against UVA rays;
  • zinc oxide or titanium dioxide - substances that provide protection against UVA rays.

In addition, the composition of creams may include additional caring components, for example, oils, extracts and extracts of plants, vitamins, glycerin for moisturizing. The more natural substances, the more the manufacturer will need preservatives and stabilizers. So don't be intimidated by the long list of ingredients. Pay attention to the presence of components such as parabens, dyes, SLS and phenoxyethanol, dioxanes. In quality products, these substances should not be. Also look at the consistency and expiration date. A good cream should not spread over the skin or, on the contrary, be too dense.
