Choosing a good travel backpack What should you pay attention to first. A backpack on wheels - a tribute to fashion or a necessity dictated by the time? How to choose a good travel backpack

At first glance, all backpacks are similar to each other - a sort of trunk with straps for carrying cargo on the back. They differ only in size, number of pockets, color. In fact, the design of a good backpack is quite complex and varied. And all the pros and cons of a particular design can be felt literally on yourself during the campaign. Therefore, before buying a backpack, you should figure out what all these difficulties are and what features of the backpack you should pay attention to first of all.

Backpack volume

The first thing that usually catches your eye when choosing a backpack is its size. Or, more correctly, the volume of a backpack, which is measured in liters. Its value is usually embroidered in numbers on the valve or lower inlet.

The choice of volume depends, first of all, on the duration of the trip - the longer it is, the larger the backpack should be, because you will have to take more things.

For weekend trips, a backpack of 40-50 liters will suffice. The same backpacks are taken for climbing, as the main things remain in the camp.

For long hikes, backpacks with a volume of 80-120 liters for men and 60-80 liters for women are chosen.

For water, ski trips you will need large backpacks, with a volume of 90-130 liters. Indeed, in addition to things, you will also have to carry inventory, and there are much more things themselves.

When choosing a backpack, it is better to take a larger volume, since it can always be pulled to the desired size with the help of ties. And if the volume, nevertheless, is not enough, you will have to use additional pouches. To do this, a MOLLE attachment system must be provided on the backpack.

Backpack design

By design, backpacks are divided into three types: soft, anatomical and easel.

Soft backpacks. Regular fabric bag with pockets and shoulder straps. The main advantage of such a backpack is its low weight, up to 1 kg, since there are no weighting structural elements. These backpacks are well suited for carrying light weight and volume, for short trips. The owner must definitely remember that the comfort when carrying things in such a backpack depends on the correct packing of things, since this is precisely what stiffness is achieved. Uneven load distribution can greatly affect the carrying comfort and endurance of the backpacker. The volume of such backpacks is usually small - up to 45 liters.

Anatomical or frame backpacks. In the back of these backpacks there are vertical inserts. As a rule, these are light tubes or tires made of metal or plastic. It is they that give rigidity, which allows the backpack to keep its shape, and also helps to distribute weight. In such a backpack it is quite convenient to carry the load, so the dimensions can be large - up to 120 liters. In addition, such backpacks often have additional pockets, slings, loops, which allows you to hang additional pouches that increase the usable volume of the backpack, attach a tent or, for example, trekking poles. No wonder this type of backpack is the most common among tourists.

easel backpacks. The main feature of these backpacks is a rigid frame made of aluminum, metal or carbon fiber. Such a frame keeps its shape well, and also evenly distributes the weight of the load over the back and hips of the porter. At the same time, it does not matter what kind of cargo is carried, in what order it is packed in a backpack. Its weight will be evenly distributed, which allows the tourist to walk for a long time with a straight back. Such a backpack is indispensable when carrying heavy and oversized things over long distances. With the fastening system, you can attach additional cargo to the backpack, for example, a canister of water or another backpack. Of course, a rigid frame increases the weight of the backpack itself, which can reach 3.5 kg, but at the same time makes carrying the load more comfortable and safer for health, as it does not harm posture.

backpack material

It is already rare to find backpacks made of tarpaulin or tent fabric. 90% of modern backpacks are made of modern materials, the most popular of which are 3: avizent, oxford and cordura.

Avisent- Russian-made fabric, also known as aviation tarpaulin. It was developed for the needs of the army to replace conventional tarpaulins. This is a thick nylon fabric with a very dense weave of threads, often with acrylic water-repellent impregnation. The fabric looks glassy, smooth, shiny. They are distinguished by excellent tensile strength, frost resistance and low weight. Also, at a small price.

Of the shortcomings, it is worth noting that if a hole forms, its edges crumble and the fabric can crawl, so the edges must be immediately melted. If the fabric is not impregnated, then it passes water. And in appearance, it is inferior to other, more expensive modern fabrics.

Oxford- used for backpacks of the middle price range. It is thinner and lighter than the avizent, and in addition, it has a more attractive appearance. It is a nylon fabric with a special coating on the inside, which ensures the waterproofness of the product.
The fabric is distinguished by a special weaving - “gunny”. With such an interlacing of fibers, the canvas, as it were, consists of relief squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The density of the material depends on the thickness of the threads used and is measured in DEN (denoted by D). Usually this number is between 150 and 1600. The higher this number, the thicker the threads and the denser the fabric. The most popular for the manufacture of tourist equipment are fabrics labeled Oxford 210D, 420D and 840D. If there is an additional letter designation in the marking, this indicates that the fabric is impregnated. The abbreviation PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, and PU stands for polyurethane composition.

Cordura (cordura)- developed by Dupont for the US military. Like oxford, it is a nylon canvas, but denser and heavier. Polyamide threads have different thicknesses. Folded several times and twisted, they acquire increased strength. Thanks to the special weave of the threads, the strength increases even more, the fabric retains protective impregnations well, while maintaining the ability to exchange gases. The density of the fibers is 100-1000 den, which is indicated on the label. The higher the value, the thicker and stronger the fabric.

Cordura is the most durable fabric with good abrasion resistance. She is not afraid of punctures and cuts, the edges do not split. Thanks to multi-layer impregnation, it has good water-repellent properties - water simply rolls off its surface in balls. The fabric doesn't rot.

But there are also negative points. The fabric is quite heavy and stiff. When walking, it rustles, so it is not suitable, for example, for hunters. Already at -10 ⁰С, the fabric begins to harden, so it is also not suitable for hiking in winter. And, of course, the price. Of backpack fabrics, this is the most expensive material.

Backpack color

When choosing a backpack, you should also pay attention to its color. Of course, for hunters, a backpack is needed “inconspicuous”. For them, depending on the type of terrain, backpacks in colors such as khaki, olive or camouflage are suitable.

For those who like to travel "savage", extreme people, climbers, bright cheerful colors are preferable. And not only because the bright color is uplifting. For these categories of travelers, there is a rather high risk of getting lost, getting injured, or getting into another difficult situation. In these cases, it is much easier for rescuers to find a tourist in trouble by any bright spot of equipment, for example, a red or bright blue backpack.

suspension system

The suspension system of the backpack consists of a back, waist belt and shoulder straps. The comfort of movement with a load, the endurance of a tourist will depend on what system your backpack will be equipped with, how correctly it is selected. When choosing a suspension system, you need to focus on the duration of the trip and the weight to be carried.

Back. Backpacks with a volume of 30-50 liters have a plastic insert in the back across the entire width of the back of the backpack. The plate gives elasticity to the backpack and the back is not deformed with a large filling of the backpack.

Backpacks with a volume of more than 50 liters to stiffen the back should have a special frame that will help carry the load without harm to the spine. It usually consists of two elastic plates or tubes arranged in parallel or in the form of the letters "X" or "V". Made from rigid plastic or aluminium. Thanks to this design, the main load moves from the spine to the pelvic region. It is very important that the backrest is adjusted in accordance with the height of the person, otherwise the main load will fall on the shoulders and spine.

So that the plates do not rub the back of the tourist, a pillow should be provided. And since the pillow fits snugly against the back when walking, it is important that it has a ventilation system. Trekking backpacks have special grooves in the back padding. The back of the backpack is made of well-ventilated mesh fabric or velor-type fabric (“Air Mesh”, “Air flow”). These fabrics allow the back to breathe and also dry quickly.

For easel backpacks, the hanging frame is an outer metal frame to which the backpack is attached. The frame separates the backpack from the back and transfers the load from the shoulders to the hips.

Belt. This part of the backpack, with the right design, allows you to transfer up to 70% of the load from the shoulders to the pelvic area. If the main weight of the load falls on the shoulders, then compression of the spine will inevitably occur, back pain and fatigue of the body will begin. In addition, the belt fixes the backpack, preventing it from hanging out and “crawling” along the back.

The belt on the outside should be hard, keep its shape well, and on the inside - soft, so that a snug fit to the body is comfortable. Therefore, from the inside, the belt has wide and soft pillows. In a good backpack, they are slightly curved. The thickness of the belt should be 8-12 mm, and the width should be at least 10 cm. The more the load is carried, the greater the width of the belt. It is also necessary to ensure that the belt keeps its shape well and does not wrinkle.

On a wide waist belt there are often small pockets for the necessary little things: money, keys, phone. The buckle on the belt should be large, on a wide sling. It should be easy to unfasten, so that if necessary, you can instantly remove the backpack.

Webbing. The straps are responsible for the convenience of wearing a backpack. The optimal width for the average person is 6-7 centimeters. Narrower straps will cut into the shoulders, and wide ones into the neck. The straps should have soft shoulder pads, on the inside they are sewn from a soft, pleasant to the touch fabric. In a good backpack, the shape of the straps should be S-curved. Such straps lie better, do not restrict movement, do not tend to slip off the shoulder. The straps taper towards the bottom and end with slings, which should be long enough to adjust the height of the straps to the height of a particular person. The straps are attached to the back either with a double Velcro or with buckles.

It is important that the straps have a chest strap, which is usually attached to a fastex lock. The coupler fixes the shoulder straps so that they do not move apart, while the load is distributed more correctly, and the shoulders are unloaded.

Important little things

We examined the main elements of a high-quality backpack, on which not only comfort, but, often, the health of the traveler depends. When choosing a backpack, you should pay attention to even less significant, but also important elements that may be useful to you on a trip, or, conversely, will be useless.

Presence of pockets. Usually they store all small things, basic necessities and what they forgot to put inside in a timely manner and are stuffed at the last moment. It is believed that the more of them, the better. But many experienced tourists prefer to abandon the outer pockets, and if necessary, use a fastening design. For example, several pouches that are attached to the backpack using the MOLLE system. They can be fastened or unfastened when they are not needed or when you need to reduce the volume of the backpack when passing, for example, through thickets. But on the other hand, hinged pouches stick out more than sewn pockets.

Valve. The bag closes with a flap at the top. It serves not only to preserve the contents of the backpack, but can itself serve as an additional pocket, moreover, it is quite roomy - up to 10 liters of volume.

The presence of a "basement". This is a separate compartment at the bottom of the backpack. It is mainly used for storing sleeping bags, wet tents, shoes.

Accessories. Buckles, zippers, regulators, of course, must be durable and comfortable to use. In order not to be left without a buckle or lock due to their sudden breakdown, it is advisable to take a spare set with you on a hike. Therefore, fittings should be standard.

Carry handle. It is needed mainly for loading a backpack into transport.

Side ties. Helps to regulate the volume of the backpack.

The presence of an external suspension system. These are loops and slings for which you can attach a rolled-up awning or tent, skis and other equipment to the backpack.

A good travel backpack cannot be cheap. Yes, and it will serve more than one season. Therefore, when choosing a backpack, consider every little thing and think again which of the design elements are really important to you. And if you take a really good backpack, durable, comfortable, reliable, then it is better to take from well-known manufacturers such as Tatonka (Germany), Tasmanian Tiger (Germany), Tactical Pro (Russia), Kiwidition (New Zealand).

In our mobile age, more and more people want to travel on their holidays. In order to always have the necessary things at hand, many tourists use backpacks on wheels. Travel essentials easily fit into the various compartments of these roomy bags, and the design features help you forget about the solid weight. However, long trips are by no means the only case when a backpack on wheels can fully show all its advantages. School models have proven themselves as a necessary thing for a modern student.

On wheels: pros and cons

To begin with, a number of orthopedic researchers are of the opinion that carrying heavy school textbooks in a familiar briefcase is risky because it can cause damage to the spine and lead to pinched spinal nerves. On the other hand, there are those who say that a backpack on wheels reduces the physical activity that is so necessary for a young age. In their opinion, wearing school supplies on the back massages the spine while walking and improves blood circulation in the brain and back muscles. It is difficult to say whose point of view is closest to the truth. In this matter, everything depends on the individual physical characteristics of the student or schoolgirl, and parents themselves must decide what is best for the child: a backpack on wheels or a regular school backpack with straps. The right choice requires taking into account many factors: the availability of certification, dimensions, length and width of the straps, etc. To facilitate the selection task, you can use the following hint: the maximum weight of textbooks and school accessories behind your back should not exceed 10-15% of the child's weight. If the calculations show the opposite, then a children's backpack on wheels will be the best solution. Many parents and children are so fond of this thing that they have no idea how they used to get by with an ordinary satchel that constantly rubbed their shoulders.

Characteristics

The first difference between a school backpack on wheels and travel bags is that they are made from dirt-repellent polyester. This material is versatile and can be used in any weather. Very often, a children's backpack on wheels is equipped with a durable waterproof plastic floor, a solid frame and a large volume for all kinds of school paraphernalia. Ergonomic shoulder straps provide pleasant wearing comfort. Every year, these bags are constantly being improved, becoming more elegant and practical.

Which model to choose?

Winx backpack on wheels is especially popular among young schoolgirls. It was created based on the children's TV series Fairy School and will be a wonderful gift for every young fan of this series. On such a backpack there is an image of a fairy and the emblem of the Winx Club. There are many varieties of bags in this category. For a boy, you can choose a bag on wheels of a sporty style. Roomy backpacks with racing cars and transformers are also popular among schoolchildren. Equipped with bright illumination, they are able to reflect active light, thereby providing an additional level of security.

So you're off on a hike. The route has been chosen, the place has been booked, tickets have been bought, you are standing in the middle of the room, things are laid out on the floor, a backpack is in the center and the main question of any novice hiker is: “How? How do you fit all this into a backpack?

We will try to help you with this task and describe the most common principles in this article: how to choose a travel backpack; how to assemble it correctly, how to properly adjust it, how to properly wear a backpack on a hike, and here are the most common mistakes that beginners make during training before a hike.

Our article will help you choose travel backpack, so that you do not get confused, standing in the store and looking at the huge selection of all kinds of models.

We also note that a backpack, shoes and a tent are what we recommend not to save on and approach the choice of this equipment with particular seriousness.

Experienced tourists will confirm our words that there is no universal backpack and that each hike has its own nuances. The first backpack will serve you as long as possible if, before you go to buy it, you already know exactly the schedule of your trips for the season. But, even following all our recommendations, only after walking several tens of kilometers with a backpack behind you, you will be able to understand exactly what kind of backpack you want to wear, and what features are especially important for you.

The first thing to know about a travel backpack is that backpacks vary in volume, which is measured in liters. In a specialized store you can find backpacks from 40 before 130 liters. In addition, there are female and male models and models with different types of construction.

You should also decide on the type of hike and the climatic conditions that will be throughout the journey.

So, for a winter hike, you need to take more things, which means that you need a larger backpack. The number of things in a water trip is significantly different from a hike in the mountains and plains. Please note that, for example, climbing Elbrus begins in a temperature regime of about +15 +20, and at the top it can be up to -20. We recommend that you clarify this point with the organizers of your trip in advance.

What size backpack to choose?

Of course, you can put all the necessary things in a small backpack, but for this you need to know how to properly pack the equipment and a lot of skill that comes with experience. In addition, with a small backpack, it often becomes necessary to hang large items "overboard", which can cause a lot of inconvenience. With a large backpack, the situation is quite the opposite: the temptation to put a lot of unnecessary things is too great and the weight of the backpack can become simply unbelievable.

Depending on the build and training, an adult traveling on a weekend trip enough backpack in 40-65 liters.

hiking on relatively flat terrain men need from 80 to 100 liters, women - from 60 to 80 liters;
for mountain tourism men should stock up on a backpack from 90 liters, women the same 60-80 liters;
water tourism or hiking with skis implies the presence of additional equipment and equipment, therefore volumes of 130 liters for men and 80 liters for women are recommended.

These numbers are very arbitrary, but will help you navigate in choosing the right backpack for the first trip. Do not forget about the individual characteristics of each. For example, a fragile girl can comfortably cover huge distances under backpacks of 80 liters, while for a young man, a hike can seem like hell with a backpack and 60 liters. Everything is very individual and is known only in practice.

Some of the quality backpack manufacturers make backpacks in sizes (from S to XL) or with the ability to adjust the size yourself.

Types of backpacks:

easel backpacks have a strong frame in their design, to which a suspension (belts, belt, straps) and a bag are attached. This version of the backpack was very popular at the end of the last century, but now it is practically not used by tourists, because. the frame is quite significant in weight and extremely rigid in use.

frame backpack type is now the most popular type of travel backpack, thanks to the most thoughtful weight distribution due to special inserts made of plastic or metal. Most often, the plates are sewn into the backpack, but there are also models with removable “armours”, which makes it easier to store the backpack (it can be rolled up).

Soft design backpack but due to the absence of any rigid inserts. This greatly simplifies its storage (it can be compactly folded both on a hike if necessary, and at home when there are no hikes), however, such backpacks need to be able to be properly stowed in order to make it tough with your own things, and this is not an easy task for beginners.

Structural elements of a tourist backpack:

Webbing system- this is 80% of your comfort on a hike. The straps should be firmly attached to the frame of the backpack, be elastic and soft, all seams are well stitched, do not slip or cut into the neck. When trying on a backpack in a store, pay attention to the buckles, they should allow the tourist to adjust the straps in an already worn and loaded backpack.

Unloading belt- redistributes the load from the shoulders and spine to the hips. The belt should be approximately at the level of the bones on the hips. Pay attention to the fact that the belt is wide enough and soft. It is very important that a convenient buckle is fixed on it, which allows not only to fit it as much as possible to the structure of your body, but also to quickly throw off the backpack if necessary.

Flap and pockets- are used mainly for storing small items that are often needed during movement, or for those items that did not fit into the main volume of the backpack. And if the valve is in all modern models, and also serves to protect things from rain, then manufacturers refuse from pockets more and more often, because. loading them, the tourist increases the volume and shifts the center of gravity of the burden.

Additional hinges, ties, fasteners serve to attach the necessary tools to the backpack (for example, ice axes, rope, even a tent).

bottom entrance may not always come in handy, especially if you have laid a rug around the perimeter of the backpack, so this detail may be considered “optional” when choosing a first backpack for a trip.

Waterproof case on a backpack in modern models is often included. It protects your belongings from getting wet during a long transition in the rain, from mud and is even used to transport a backpack through water.

Your actions in the store when buying a travel backpack:

  • carefully study the design of the backpack;
  • pay attention to the quality of the fabric and seams;
  • all buckles and fasteners must be strong, and the ties pass through them freely;
  • the material on the back should be soft and, preferably, with a ventilating insert;
  • the level of attachment of the straps on the back should fall approximately in the middle of the shoulder blades, if this mark is noticeably higher or lower, then you should choose a different backpack in size or height;
  • adjust the backpack loaded, fastening and tightening all possible fastenings, to the perfect result.

How to assemble a backpack

There is a main rule here - proper weight distribution.

Before you start packing your backpack, make a list of things you will need on the hike, lay out the things on the floor and organize them into groups: for example, things for sleeping, general equipment, heavy items, items that are often used on a hike, bulky things, clothes.

Try to use the entire volume of the backpack and do not leave voids, because. during movement, this will lead to a shift in weight in the backpack and entail a lot of inconvenience.

And now for the points:

  • at the very bottom they put voluminous things and things that are useful only in the evening or during the stay (sleeping clothes, sleeping bag), a tent and a karemat are usually attached outside;
  • the heaviest things are distributed along the back, while trying to put soft objects between things and the back, so you will avoid sharp corners that will fit into your back;
  • it is better to pack the things of the group that fell on you during distribution in a separate bag so that you can get them easily and not look for too long throughout the backpack;
  • items that you plan to use frequently (camera, phone, map, medicines, water, insect protection, etc.) should be placed at the very top to simplify the process of accessing them;
  • it is better to pack all small-sized things in a separate container or bag so that they do not spill over the backpack;
  • documents, money, phones, chargers and everything that is a pity, it is better to pack in waterproof bags;
  • fragile items and crumbling food should be placed as close to the top as possible.
    After the backpack is assembled, put it on, adjust and go for a walk. You should be comfortable and comfortable. If this is not the case, try moving things around to even out the load's center of gravity.

How to properly adjust your backpack

When you have decided what to pack for your trip and properly packed your things, it is time to put on your backpack and adjust it so that the trip is as comfortable as possible and does not turn into a nightmare.

The first desire - to pick up the backpack and throw it over your shoulders with force - should be ignored. The weight of the backpack is quite significant and such an attempt may fail and even lead to injury.

In order to properly adjust a tourist backpack filled with things, you should loosen the straps and put it, taking it by the handle, on some kind of elevation (at home it can be a chair, table, cabinet), and only then alternately throw the straps over your shoulders.
If there was no elevation at hand, then instead of it you can use your own leg bent at the knee

Adjustment of the backpack must begin with the lower mounts. Pull up the weight belt so that the buckle is half way between your thighs. The belt should fit your hips as anatomically as possible and take up to half the weight of the backpack.
After that, start adjusting the webbing straps. It is not worth pulling them up too actively so as not to transfer all the weight from the unloading belt to the shoulders, but not too weakly so that the backpack does not lean back when walking. Make sure that the straps do not dig into the neck, and the chest strap does not interfere with free breathing and movement.
If this is your first experience with assembling and adjusting a backpack, then we recommend walking around the apartment in it or even walking around the yard in order to fit it as accurately as possible. If you are not comfortable, it is worth pulling out extra things or redistributing the weight within the space of the backpack.

How to wear a backpack

In order to understand how to properly wear a backpack, just follow the rules that we announced above:

  1. It’s not worth saving on a backpack, but we wouldn’t recommend mindlessly buying the most expensive first backpack either.
  2. A backpack should not be bought online. It is better to spend a little time, go to the store, try everything on.
  3. You need to choose a backpack based on: a) your own anatomical features and preferences (no one has canceled the concept of a “beautiful backpack”), b) hiking conditions (hiking, mountain, water, etc.), c) the quality of materials, threads and accessories, d) own feelings.
  4. The heaviest things in the backpack should be located along the back, the most necessary - on top, those that will be needed only in the evening - at the very bottom.
  5. There should be no voids in the backpack.
  6. A correctly put on and adjusted backpack is comfortable to wear, does not move anywhere when moving, and sits tightly.
  7. With an assembled, adjusted backpack, you should walk around, try to lean in different directions, and make sure of your own confidence in your movements.
  8. Please note that personal belongings in the campaign should not be more than 10 kg! They will add another 4 to 12 kg (depending on the duration and autonomy of the trip and your gender). The normal weight of a backpack for a hike of medium difficulty for 10 days for a girl is about 17 kg, and for a man about 23 kg.

We wish you nothing but the best hiking experience and hope this article will help you choose the perfect first backpack for you.

And we also have useful articles on choosing other equipment you need for hiking.

Today backpacks are not only an item of a sports wardrobe, they are in demand in the daily life of adults and children. Orthopedists approve of the choice of backpacks, because they are much safer for posture than bags with one strap, often causing curvature of the spine and asymmetry of the shoulder girdle with frequent and significant loading.

How to choose a backpack

When choosing a backpack, in addition to the aesthetic aspect, it is important to consider:

  1. Purpose. There are models designed for hiking, cycling, for city life, for study.
  2. The size matters: for children and adults, backpacks differ in volume, it is important to take into account both the weight of the product and the expected load.
  3. Waterproof important if the backpack does not have a protective cover, and the contents must be kept dry (gadgets, valuables). For the manufacture of the bag, waterproof membranes, sealed pocket zippers, and separate film inserts are used. Hiking and bicycle backpacks are often equipped with a protective cover.
  4. Functionality is largely determined by the purpose: the models of individual groups differ in the number of pockets and volume, as well as in the fabric. So, you can’t go to work with a hiking backpack, and a school backpack will not be convenient on a bike ride or when going out into nature.

Attention! This rating is subjective, is not an advertisement and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

Any journey requires special equipment that can provide convenience, comfort and safety on a trip or hike. Even in the most difficult conditions, the traveler needs to eliminate unnecessary problems associated with carrying the right things. The rating of the best travel backpacks will help you choose the model that is ideal for its owner.

Hiking bags and backpacks have been transformed and improved over the years and today, thanks to modern materials and technologies, there is a large selection of backpacks with their own characteristics suitable for each type of tourism.

Camping backpack

Equipment of this type allows you to easily and comfortably carry all the necessary things. Hiking backpacks are of two types - for weekend trips and the so-called assault. The first type is intended for a short and not very difficult hike - for example, for a picnic, fishing, hunting, or in the forest for mushrooms. Such a backpack is not equipped with additional features necessary for a mountain climbing trip or a long solo trip. The main features of the backpack for weekend trips:

  • small volume (from 20-50 l - women's backpack, up to 50-70 l - men's);
  • simple design;
  • affordable price.

Assault backpack

So named because of the special design that allows you to place the most necessary assault equipment outside. Designed for small ascents, short hikes, while designed for maximum extreme sports and ready for severe trials. Outwardly, it has a streamlined shape and is not overloaded with a large number of external pockets, which eliminates the danger of catching them on ledges or branches. Its features:

  • small volume (20-50 l);
  • high strength;
  • not afraid of loads and mechanical impact;
  • does not deteriorate under the influence of weather conditions;
  • lightweight and comfortable.

Backpack for mountain hiking

This is the most expensive type of equipment. They also include "thing assistants" for extreme skiing disciplines, such as freeride (skiing or snowboarding outside specially prepared tracks) and backcountry (hiking ascent and descent on skis or snowboard also on unprepared terrain).

Features of this type of backpacks:

  • allows you to secure skis for carrying;
  • has many special pockets for ski equipment and first aid kit;
  • special insulated drinking system;
  • back protection;
  • "airbag" - a system for survival in case of falling under an avalanche.

Backpacks for trekking (hiking)

The most diverse look, with many options for designs, designs, various materials and individual features. They are distinguished by practicality, versatility in use, convenience, indispensable for hiking in the mountains or wooded areas. They have a wide choice of volume (for 50-70 liters, 60-80 liters, 80-100 liters and more), and also differ in designs. So, there are easel backpacks with a rigid back (having an external frame) and anatomical (with an internal frame).

Easel - less popular, gradually becoming a thing of the past, but still widely used in short trips, as well as speleological and water expeditions.

Features of the easel backpack:

  • the frame is made of light alloy;
  • has a suspension system (wide shoulder straps, soft back, waist belt);
  • the ability to carry small, but heavy things.

Anatomical backpacks of 30 liters and more are very popular, their designs come with soft and hard frame parts, complex and simple, as well as with the ability to customize (some parts of the frame can be detached). There are anatomical backpacks with an external frame, where the main elements are outside, which provides additional back ventilation. However, this type is bulky, increases the load on the back and strongly alters the back. In addition, the backpack configuration is inconvenient for packing large items.

Most of today's backpacks, having complex designs, created to suit all kinds of needs, can be a loser compared to simpler models that do not have a frame. And first of all it concerns the weight and dimensions. Modern technologies make it possible to reduce the volume of things needed on a hike to ten kilograms, while a well-equipped backpack itself weighs about three, which significantly increases the total weight of the belongings carried behind your back.

The frameless one is light, its volume is not more than 30 liters, and the shape is quite a convenient and roomy bag. At the same time, it is made of durable material. Of course, there are more capacious backpacks, which are something between a simple bag-backpack and a high-tech invention of our time.

How to choose the right backpack?

First of all, you should decide on its purpose, select the type and then draw up the basic requirements for it. When choosing a backpack, it is easiest to navigate through a list of key criteria and selection parameters, including weight and volume, as well as price and functionality.

  1. The backpack should be versatile so that there is no need for additional bags;
  2. Things should be easy to remove, especially from the middle and from the bottom;
  3. The presence of convenient pockets, compartments for easy access to the necessary small things;
  4. The ability to transform the backpack by unfastening a separate pocket from it;
  5. Good ventilation in the back and shoulders;
  6. It is desirable to have a special cover to protect against rain and dirt.

Which brand of backpack is better to buy?

Among the variety of manufacturers of tourist backpacks, preference is most often given to universal models, multisports, as well as inexpensive, budget options, however, low cost can turn into problems, which is unacceptable in extreme conditions. Therefore, it is worth making a choice in favor of reliability and quality and, of course, destination. Below are the most popular models of high-quality backpacks, different in price, purpose and configuration.
