How to make a mermaid tail from bags. Do-it-yourself mermaid costume for a girl: a master class and original ideas. Step by step description of the creative process

Costume making master class.

Who is this little mermaid? In our view, this is a beautiful girl with a long fish tail instead of legs, adorned with all the riches that the sea world is fraught with. Surely she has long hair with shells braided in them, and the scales of her tail shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow (Fig. a).

Turning into a mermaid at a holiday or not at all difficult! You need imagination, a good mood and some of the materials and tools that everyone will undoubtedly find at home.

To make a costume, we need a light fabric (chiffon, organza) of green, blue or turquoise color, a denser fabric (satin) for cutting the top and some elements of the skirt.

The skirt and top (fig. c) are very easy to make, and absolutely anyone can make them. On fig. b shows how to make the front of the top. The back part can be made in the same way, but not to collect the fabric in the center, or even get by with a rectangular or square flap. Scales are easy to imitate by sewing in several rows of circles cut out of light fabric with layering the next row on the previous one (Fig. 13d). The edges must be processed with a burning candle, because the fabric is synthetic.

When creating a hairstyle, you need to braid the braids, weaving into them long threads (pre-cut, the desired length) of green or blue. For hair, you can use woolen thread for knitting.

Necklace and bracelet.

Step 1. Tools and materials: green, blue or blue satin fabric, non-woven tape to seal the base, paper template, scissors, pencil, glue (Moment, Superglue or glue gun), beads, beads, rhinestones, sequins , shells.

Step 2. We make a pattern according to the pattern on the fabric and interlining. On the fabric, leave allowances along the edges of 5-10 mm for hem.

We apply interlining on the wrong side of the fabric with the sticky side down. We iron with an iron until it is completely glued, placing paper on top and bottom.

Step 3. We bend the edges and glue to the wrong side.

Step 4. We come up with a compositional basis, laying out the main elements. Having completed this stage, we can easily finish the composition by simply filling in the empty spaces with small details. In the manufacture of such products, it is important to always have a preliminary sketch or a clear idea of \u200b\u200bwhat exactly should be the result. This is necessary in order not to confuse yourself when working with a variety of materials and to come to the desired result in the end.

Step 5. The last stage in the manufacture of jewelry. The edges can be decorated with sequins of different colors. We complement the free space with beads and sequins. We glue (or sew) ribbons (hooks, buttons). Do not be afraid to use different materials, even if they are not at all intended for this kind of work. Glue aquarium stones onto the necklace. Remember the main thing: the more diverse the materials used in color and texture, the more interesting and mysterious your product will look.

Mermaid costume for girls consists of three main components:
corsage
shells
tail

Step 1: Bodice

The first step in developing this project was that it should be Mermaid costume for girls to make sure it fits and is functional, since my client makes costumes for kids, they have to be age appropriate. Usually Mermaid costumes consist of a simple bra, but we didn't want to show a lot of naked body. To solve this problem, I created a mermaid costume for a girl, like a strapless dress, with seashells attached to the chest.

Begin!

Outer layer of the bodice: Consists of 7 parts: central front, 2 side front, 2 side back, 2 center back with lacing. Under the color of the naked body, the fabric that makes up the bodice Mermaid costume for girls, is cut out on the panel, respectively from the center, to the sides and back. These panels should be stitched inside out and fit, making it possible to resize Mermaid costume for girls according to her size, and fit it exactly once you've laced it up.

Bodice lining: Consists of colored polyester under the naked body. Since the lining is a mirror image of the outer layer, build it exactly the same way, but add a 1" seam allowance for the boning of the body. Also sew the fabric in the chest area to add the hourglass shape of the bodice that we were trying to achieve. To do this, you can use swimsuit pads or something similar.

Assembly! At this point, I join the inner and outer parts together, and making sure the seams match, I stitch them. Go ahead and sew on the lacing from top to bottom for security.

Step 2: Shells

Since mermaids always roam topless and only simple outfits adorn their chests, this piece of a mermaid costume for a girl took me the most time to make from scratch. The shells are luminescent, purple, with gemstones to really catch the eye!

Material: Have you ever heard of the magical material called Wonderflex? This little thing saved my life! It is used by costume designers, enthusiasts. It comes in big rolls and looks like a really heavy stuff, with a mesh of cloth embedded in the plastic. Using it is simple - you just shape it with a heat gun (or a hair dryer in my case). I originally tried to make these shells out of clay, but it was a total failure...until I used clay molds like wonderflex molds.

To start this process, I cut out two large circles of material, about 11" in diameter. Placed it on top of the clay mold and started heating it with a hair dryer. After pressing, stretching and molding the wonderflex into the correct shape, I let it cool and removed it from shapes, cut along the outline, and sanded those cut edges so they were smooth.

Note: Since this material is thermoplastic, DO NOT leave the products in a hot vehicle or any other environment where the temperature may rise. It will deform and may even lose its shape.

Coloring: The last step is to apply about 4 coats of magenta paint until we get the look we want, and then cover them with lip gloss, which gives the shells a wet look. In addition, I glued purple and white stones with superglue. Voila! It was such a laborious process, but without wonderflex, none of this would have been possible!

Step 3: Tail

To create a ponytail that wouldn't get in the way of walking and sitting, I approached this as if it were a pencil skirt, very high waisted and tapered around the knee, but with a large slit in the back to knee height. The skirt itself is made up of three very long pieces that are stitched together to create a horn-like figure. This is noticeable from the front, and leans a little to the side so that the wearer can keep the tail with a bracelet on the appropriate side.

Fabrics: Green polyester material for the lining, batting for the structured inner layer, emerald foil on the outside, and the use of chiffon to bring it all together. This is 4 layers of fabric, the desired color, texture and weight!

Scales: The scales were made using four yards of glittery chiffon cut out with 5" curly strings. This was the most time consuming part of making the girl's mermaid costume, as it was the material that I had to scorch the edges of each layer with a tealight. But the end result was stunning!

After that, I combined the tiers and sewed everything into a single design.

Step 4:

Putting all the pieces together! And now we connect the bodice to the tail, but only to the outer side of the tail. Then we hem the tail lining to the bodice and give it a well finished look. I also added hip straps at the side seam so the girl's mermaid costume could hang.

  • red wig (optional).

Preparation for work:

To do this, use a measuring tape to measure the circumference of the chest and waist, as well as the height from the waist to the heels plus 25 cm.
  • Multiply OT by 2, take the resulting length of the tail, and you will get the size of the rectangle that needs to be cut out of dense blue fabric.
  • Also multiply the bust measurement by 2, take a width sufficient to cover the girl’s chest, and cut a rectangle out of purple fabric for a bandeau bodice. From it, make a narrow thin strip for a tie around the neck.

How to sew a mermaid costume with your own hands?

Ready for more intricate outfit options? For an older girl, this solution is suitable - with a long skirt, a comfortable blouse and a crown.

To make this DIY mermaid costume, you will need:

  • silver fabric with sequins - 1-2 m;
  • blue and green organza - 0.5 m each;
  • thick cardboard - 5 A4;
  • wide elastic band - about 0.6 m;
  • tulle - 1-2 m, more (optional);
  • glue gun;
  • sewing accessories;
  • blue glitter;
  • large silver pebbles;
  • blue bodysuit;
  • silver braid - about 1 m;
  • thick silver fabric - 3 small pieces.

Mermaid skirt

  • Before buying fabric, take measurements so as not to be mistaken with its footage. The easiest way to find out the optimal size of the skirt-tail is this: ask the child to lie on a large sheet and outline the contours of the tail so that it does not fit tightly around the legs. To make both sides symmetrical, the paper needs to be folded in half and cut out a pattern along the most successful lines. Now you will know exactly how much fabric you need.
  • Pin the pattern to the fabric with sequins, cut out the details of the tail. Don't forget about seam allowances. If the skirt will be worn on a naked body, then it is advisable to make a lining of soft, pleasant fabric, since the decorative material is prickly. Or slip your pantyhose under your suit.
  • Now sew one side of the skirt, and make a drawstring along its top and thread an elastic band into it, the length of which is determined by trying it on the child’s waist in a slightly stretched state. After that, you can sew the second side of the tail.
  • Now cut small organza scales and, starting from the bottom of the skirt, glue them with
  • To keep the fins in shape, take a piece of cardboard and outline them. Then cut out the blanks and glue them to each side of the fabric. The fins should be voluminous and fairly firm.
  • After that, cut the tulle into thin strips about 40 cm long, fold them in half, tie the top with a knot and glue just above the beginning of the fins. The skirt is ready.

Top of the suit and crown

There is much less work here than with the bottom:

  • Freehand draw a shell about 12 x 12 cm and cut out 2 pieces of thick silver fabric. Put the bodysuit on the child and, using pins, carefully mark the places for all the jewelry.
  • Remove the blouse and glue the shells on the chest, silver braid around the neckline and on top of the shells, large stones under the chest in the form of jewelry chains.
  • Print or draw a template for the crown, transfer it to heavy paper, and then to a piece of the same fabric that was used for the shells on the bodysuit. Cut out the material, glue it to the cardboard. Decorate the crown as desired - cut out templates from cardboard and fabric of a different color, shiny pebbles, shells, etc.

As a base, a plain blouse is also suitable, which is easy to decorate on your own. We cut out shells from a silvery or red fabric with a shiny texture. With the help of safety pins, we fix the material on the blouse, carefully sew it on. Rhinestones can be glued on the top of the bodice. We also decorate the blouse itself with bright stones or sequins.

Skirt work

The skirt performs not only a decorative function. It is the basis for the tail, which is located at the end.

Materials:

  • tulle;
  • satin fabric;
  • elastic;
  • scissors;
  • sewing meter;
  • elastic;
  • glue;

From organza we cut out a narrow skirt that expands just below the knee. Cut the front and back. Laying the seams on the machine. We insert an elastic band into the belt, we sew the ends by hand. Sewing up the remaining space.

Sew the tail area neatly. It is recommended to treat the incision site with an amplifier so that the seams do not come apart at the wrong time. To do this, we cut a strip from the material, fold it in half and sew it manually to the base of the cut. We cut off the rest.

Important! The reinforcement must be fixed on both sides of the fabric.

Skirt decor

The addition to the skirt is scale imitation. It can be made from satin fabric.

Cut out small circles from the material. Glue the figures to the surface of the skirt using glue or a glue gun.

The skirt is ready.

Image details

Having prepared the base, we move on to the important details that will help create your favorite fabulous image.

mermaid tail

A fluffy tail is the main attribute of any Mermaid. To achieve more splendor, small strips of tulle can be added under the base of the organza tail.

To do this, cut out ribbons of medium width from the material. When choosing a length, be guided by the cuts that protrude from the tail. The tulle should be the same length as the fins.

Sew on the ribbons carefully. For volume, it is recommended to apply several layers of material, the strips of which will differ in length. When placed on the sides, the tulle can be made slightly longer so that it peeks out from under the fins. The tail of the Little Mermaid is ready.

Advice: For the skirt, scales and tail, use fabrics from different shades.

Decorations

Accessories help complete any ensemble. When choosing a mythical character, the outfit can be varied using several options.
