Traditions of celebrating the Day of the Airborne Troops

Many people know about the tradition of the "winged assault" to put on their blue berets with vests on August 2 and meet with comrades in city parks. For example, in Moscow, the traditional gathering place for VDVs is Gorky Park. Also, many people know that on Airborne Forces Day it is customary to swim in fountains and eat watermelons. It’s clear where the tradition of eating watermelons came from: it’s just that these berries ripen just in time for August.

The "watermelon habit" appeared among the paratroopers in the late 1980s - after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. But where the love for bathing in fountains came from is unknown. There are many versions. According to the "blue berets" themselves, in this way they want to be closer to the sky, the reflection of which they see in the water of the fountains.

In addition, on August 2, the Airborne Troops drive around their cities in cars with symbols and flags of the Airborne Forces. However, this is not all the traditions of the Day of the "winged assault". Also on this day, it is customary to reward the best paratroopers: they are awarded medals and give valuable gifts.

Particularly distinguished receive extraordinary titles and new positions. Moreover, “blue berets” receive congratulations on their holiday not only from their family members, but also from the Minister of Defense and even the President. On Airborne Forces Day, the main heroes of the occasion usually arrange demonstration performances and demonstrate weapons and equipment that they are armed with.

In addition, festive concerts, master classes in hand-to-hand combat and parades are organized on August 2. Also on this day, the airborne troops remember their dead comrades: as a rule, not a single August 2 is complete without a flower-laying ceremony at the memorials to paratrooper soldiers.

Interesting facts about the Airborne Forces, whose holiday is celebrated on August 2, 2018

Everyone knows that the abbreviation VDV means Airborne Troops, but the paratroopers decipher it as Uncle Vasya's Troops. So they call the famous commander of the Airborne Wax Vasily Margelov, who led this branch of the military from 1954 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1979.

It was thanks to "Uncle Vasya" that the landing troops acquired their vest and blue berets (before that, the berets were crimson), and the paratroopers began to land directly in combat vehicles, and not just on their own with parachutes.

Military equipment, descending with paratroopers inside, could immediately go into battle - she did not have to stand and wait for the crews to descend on their parachutes. They say that in the first BMD, which was supposed to be thrown out of the plane, Margelov put his son and personally closed the hatch behind him.

So, under "Uncle Vasya", the Airborne Forces acquired their unique and irresistible mobility. Margelov, who led the landing troops for more than 20 years, was able to create in them that special spirit, thanks to which service in the Airborne Forces began to be considered the most prestigious.

The Day of the Airborne Forces is a memorable date that is designed to promote the revival and development of domestic military traditions - the holiday was established by decree of the President of Russia dated May 31, 2006.

The paratroopers invariably remain a symbol of courage, reliability and strength, who live by the principle: "No one but us!" - they are also called "winged infantry", "blue berets" and so on.

How the Airborne Forces was born

The first parachute landing in the USSR, in which only 12 Red Army soldiers took part, took place on August 2, 1930 near Voronezh during the exercises of the Air Force of the Moscow Military District. That is why this date is considered the birthday of the Airborne Forces.

Recognizing the experiment as successful, in 1933 special aviation battalions were formed in the Belorussian, Ukrainian, Moscow and Volga military districts, from which modern airborne troops subsequently grew.

Five airborne corps of up to ten thousand people each in the USSR had already been fully formed by the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, which from the first days of the war fought defensive battles in Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic states, in cooperation with other ground forces.

The 9th Guards Airborne Division defended the famous Prokhorovka near Kursk for more than a day - the "winged infantry" destroyed about 500 Nazi soldiers in this battle.

The paratroopers fought on the Karelian front, Moldova, Hungary, liberated the capital of Austria - Vienna.

Japan's actions in the Far East were completely paralyzed precisely thanks to the airborne troops that landed in Harbin, Port Arthur, Pyongyang, Mukden, and South Sakhalin.

The feat of the paratroopers, who fought with unparalleled courage and heroism, was reflected in Soviet military poetry, prose, and cinema.

The famous song by Bulat Okudzhava "We Need One Victory" ("Our Tenth Airborne Battalion") from Andrey Smirnov's film "Belorussky Station" is dedicated to the heroic paratroopers.

The paratroopers continued to perform feats in the post-war period. In January 1988, the famous 9th company was able to repel more than 12 Mujahideen attacks and hold Hill 3234, despite the tenfold numerical superiority of the enemy, before the arrival of the reconnaissance platoon. By that time, only five people remained in the ranks of the 9th company.

Since 2005, units of the Airborne Forces, according to their specialization, are divided into airborne, airborne assault and mountain. The first includes the 98th Guards Airborne Division and the 106th Guards Airborne Division of two regiments, the second - the 76th Guards Airborne Assault Division of two regiments and the 31st Guards Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of three battalions, to the third is the 7th Guards Air Assault Division (mountain).

On August 1, 2018, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu unveiled a monument to Margelov on Polikarpov Street in Moscow. The solemn opening ceremony of the monument was attended by Margelov's son, a veteran of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Colonel-General Vitaly Margelov, Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Vladimir Shamanov and Chairman of the Union of Russian Paratroopers Valery Vostrotin.

The head of the Ministry of Defense noted that Margelov personifies a whole era in the formation and development of the Airborne Forces: “Thanks to General Margelov, the airborne assault was equipped with the most modern equipment, new methods of its use were tested. The iron will, organizational talent and front-line hardening of the commander made it possible to form the invincible spirit of the "blue berets", turn them into a mobile and formidable strike force that knows no equal in the world.

“In the Airborne Forces, it is allowed to wear, at the direction of the commander, with everyday and field summer uniforms (who are required by the norm), they take blue, a summer open cotton tunic and khaki trousers in boots, boots, equipment,” reads the order of the Ministry of Defense dated July 26, 1969, signed by Marshal Grechko.

However, in crimson berets, the paratroopers did not pass for long. Soon, General Ivan Lisov suggested changing the color of the hats to blue. This idea was enthusiastically supported by Margelov himself, and in 1969 it was finally approved. It is believed that this color was chosen because it is most associated with the sky. At least once in history - during the entry of troops into Czechoslovakia - the color of the beret caused confusion. Soviet paratroopers were initially considered UN military, also wearing blue hats.

By the way, the paratroopers owe their current uniform to Margelov. When the design of the uniform was being developed, the artist Alexander Zhuk prepared two versions of the headgear: crimson and protective colors, but the latter remained only on paper. But the crimson beret was approved in 1967, and Margelov himself put a resolution on it: “Leave it for parades in Moscow!”.

“Personally Comrade. Margelov is disciplined, diligent, demanding of himself and his subordinates, he makes decisions quickly and sensibly reacts to the situation, the document says, “The division is prepared, morally stable, capable of performing combat missions.”

From the combat characteristics of Margelov: “He proved to be tactically competent, proactive, able to control the battle of the unit. He knows the tactics of modern combat, he can build the interaction of military branches. (...) It pays a lot of attention to the formation of the personnel of the division during the period of combat training reviews, the division showed a combat-ready unit - ready for offensive battles.

During the Great Patriotic War, he commanded a rifle regiment, was chief of staff and deputy commander of a rifle division. In 1944, Margelov was appointed commander of the 49th Guards Rifle Division of the 28th Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. Under his leadership, the crossing of the Dnieper and the liberation of Kherson took place. For this, in March 1944 he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Under his command, the 49th Guards Rifle Division took part in the liberation of the countries of South-Eastern Europe. In 1967 he was awarded the rank of Army General.

In the Soviet-Finnish war (1939-1940) Margelov commanded the Separate reconnaissance ski battalion of the 596th rifle regiment of the 122nd division. Captured officers of the Swedish General Staff during one of the operations.

The paratroopers themselves unofficially decipher the abbreviation of the Airborne Forces not as the Airborne Troops, but as Uncle Vasya's Troops. "Uncle Vasya" is called the commander of the Airborne Forces in 1954-1959 and 1961-1979 Vasily Margelov.

Not all paratroopers spend the day of the Airborne Forces in fountains with watermelon and booze. Krasnoyarsk employees on that day donated blood of the day for those in need. Some of them are "honorary donors". In addition, at the end of the holiday, the paratroopers intend to visit a charitable foundation and provide material assistance to sick children.

And near Vologda, in the meantime, Father Frost himself decided to congratulate the paratroopers, no matter how strange it may sound. At the Trufanovo airfield, at the Open Sky festival dedicated to the day of the Airborne Forces, the winter wizard decided to try himself as a paratrooper and jumped with a parachute from a height of 2.2 thousand meters.

And this is how the Airborne Forces Day passed in Tula.

The park has thoroughly prepared for the celebration: a festive concert is being held on Pushkinskaya Embankment from 13:00, and some of the establishments on the territory have stopped working just in case. In particular, if you are not a paratrooper and suddenly, forgetting, find yourself in a park, you will not be able to get to the Gorky Park Museum and the observation deck of the Main Entrance arch, to the souvenir shop, use the rental points in the ground floor or go to the Garage. Some cafes are also closed.

Gorky Park is traditionally considered the main platform where paratroopers gather in Moscow. As in previous years, the main entrance is decorated in honor of the holiday: this time with laconic striped flags, on which the white letters of the Airborne Forces are guessed.

Muscovites in social networks write that in the center of the capital, paratroopers, distraught because of the turning off of fountains, tear out the pipes of irrigation systems and independently arrange ritual bathing for themselves. In addition, the "blue berets" call to go swimming in the Moscow River. More like Internet trolling, although, of course, in such heat and muddy waters of the Moskva River, they seem attractive. The correspondent of Gazeta.Ru has not yet been able to see where the brawl described in social networks is going on. However, it is not yet evening.

After that, the paratroopers noticed how a police detachment was approaching them. Although the law enforcement officers looked resolute and menacing, the conversation with the airborne troops did not last long. “Guys, just be careful, no one wants problems. Happy holiday to you! ”Said one of the policemen and left with his colleagues.

It turns out that there is a special offer for paratroopers on Manezhnaya Square today. A man in the costume of Vladimir Monomakh approached the company in blue berets and said: “We can take a picture for you on this day for free.” Without thinking twice, the young people surrounded the "king" and took a memorable picture. He also ran a girl dressed as a crazy empress.

During the photo session, a foreigner walked by, who happened to be in Moscow on a holiday. There was one question in his eyes: "What's going on here?" Noticing his interest, the paratroopers put a bottle of vodka on the ground and decided to invite the guest of the capital for a joint photo.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already congratulated the personnel and veterans of the Russian Airborne Troops on their holiday. “The Russian Airborne Forces have a rich and glorious history, which the current generation of soldiers and officers is rightly proud of. Your predecessors faithfully served the Motherland, in the most difficult situations they invariably demonstrated the highest competence, self-discipline and personal courage, sacredly kept devotion to the military brotherhood, ”the congratulations published on the Kremlin website read.

Let's take a look at the center of Moscow. +29 degrees outside. But who has it ever stopped? A fountain has recently been adorned on Birzhevaya Square - it has already been tried by excited fans during the World Cup. Now the paratroopers are pulling up to him along with their families, the correspondent of Gazeta.Ru reports. Turquoise shorts and a white T-shirt - the kids fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the holiday. However, at the intersection of Birzhevaya Square and Ilyinka, they will be disappointed. Today, as luck would have it, the fountain was turned off. After standing for no more than two minutes, company after company leaves the square in search of a wetter place. They are followed by squads of policemen. It seems that today there are more of them than Muscovites who decided to take a walk in the center.
