New Year and Christmas folk carols and many beautiful illustrations and paintings

As winter approaches, many more and more often look at the calendar, counting the weeks and days until the coveted end of the year. New Year, Christmas, Old New Year - the list of January holidays is truly impressive. By tradition, these days everyone is having fun, visiting, receiving family and friends at a richly set table. In addition to festive treats and feasts, it is customary to carol at Christmas - to walk around the courtyards and sing carols with wishes of happiness, good luck and prosperity. What are carols? These are traditional ritual songs of a religious nature, glorifying the birth of Jesus Christ, as well as narrating about other persons and events of the Old Testament. There is an opinion that there is an inextricable connection between Kolyada and Christmas, but this is not entirely true. In Ancient Russia, carols were dedicated to the pagan god Kolyada, the patron saint of all farmers and the son of the solar deity Dazhdbog. The Kolyada holiday fell on the "turning point" of the winter solstice, when the days were gradually becoming longer and the nights shorter. In order for the harvest in the new year to be generous, and in the house to have prosperity and health, it was customary to sing carols. With the advent of Christianity, the feast of Kolyada and the Nativity of Christ were "combined" and the words of carols began to thank God for all the good things in the old year, as well as to praise the generosity and hospitality of the owners. We tried to collect the most beautiful Russian folk carols for Christmas - short children's quatrains, longer pieces. According to our texts and scores, you can easily learn your favorite carols for Christmas and on Christmas Eve with a cheerful company of mummers to go caroling. With the help of the video, you can listen to Christmas carols and enjoy wonderful songs at any time.

As a rule, Christmas carols were learned short, "with meaning", the texts of which are easy to remember. Kolyada, kolyada!
Give us some pie
Or a slice of bread,
Or half a dollar money,
Or a chicken with a crest,
Cockerel with a comb!

Kolyada-molad

Rolled up young!

We found a carriage

In the Mironov yard.

Hey Uncle Myron

Take the good to the yard.

It's like frost outside

Freezes nose.

Doesn't tell me to stand for a long time

Tells to submit soon

Or a lukewarm cake

Or butter, cottage cheese,

Or a spear of money,

Christ the Savior

Was born at midnight.

In the poor den

He settled down.

Over the nativity scene

The star is shining.

Christ the Master,

On your birthday

Give to all the people

The world of enlightenment!

Texts and sheet music of folk carol songs for Christmas - for caroling children for the holidays

On the night of January 6-7, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Nativity of Christ - a bright and joyful holiday. In the old days, after the rising of the first star, the whole family sat down at the festive table with various delicious dishes and drinks. At this time, the fun began on the street - Christmas carols! Young people and children gathered in large companies, changed into homemade costumes of fairy-tale characters and went to caroling in the courtyards. So, some carols glorify the birth of Jesus Christ, telling about the biblical events of that significant night when an angel appeared to the Bethlehem shepherds with a wonderful message. In the lyrics of other carols songs, the main emphasis was on congratulating the owner of the house and other family members on Christmas, followed by requests for gifts. In return, the carols in verses and songs “wished” well-being, prosperity and various blessings in the new year. We have prepared texts and sheet music for short Christmas carols for children who play carols, which can be prepared for the upcoming winter holidays.

Russian folk carols - lyrics and video (you can listen to online musical recordings of Christmas songs)

The folk custom of singing carols dates back to ancient times. So, our ancestors, the Slavs, greatly revered Veles, the god of fertility, wealth and family economy - his holiday was celebrated on the day of the winter solstice. It was believed that on this day a new young sun was born, so all the fire was extinguished in the house and a new one was lit with the help of flint or friction. Later, Christianity left its "imprint" on this pagan holiday, endowing carols with a religiously sublime meaning. The texts of many Christmas carols are song retellings of entire gospel stories of the birth of Jesus. Traditionally, carols began to walk around the courtyards on the evening of January 6, loudly singing Christmas songs with good wishes to the owners in the new year. In return, the crowd of mummers received delicious gifts and even money in their bag. Children - the most zealous Christmas carols - were looking forward to Christmas with special impatience. Despite the bitter Christmas frost, the children's gangs, laughing, ran from yard to yard and asked permission to poke around. If the owners gave the go-ahead, the words of short children's carols were sounded in response - their simple texts will be mastered by both toddlers and older children. In gratitude for the beautiful chant, the owners presented the little carol-singers with sweets, apples and tangerines (the modern "New Year" version). It happens that the guys received a refusal at their request - according to popular beliefs, in the new year such a courtyard will be bypassed by luck and prosperity. With the help of our videos, you can listen to amazingly beautiful Russian folk carols online, the music recordings of which will make you plunge into the unique festive atmosphere.

Children's carols songs - Russian folk works with lyrics

Since olden times, on Christmas evening after the first star rose, carollers gathered in the streets - groups of young guys or girls (or even "mixed" ones). During such a traditional procession, merry Christmas carols were sung, the bell in the hands of the "bell ringer" rang out loudly, and the cheerful laughter of the mummers was heard. Unlike adult carols, children did not dress up in animal costumes, but made their "rounds" around the master's courtyards in the morning and afternoon. In addition, the texts of children's carols were short and contained an appeal to the owners with a request to present them with treats and coins. In our selection you will find the most touching short Christmas carols for children, the texts of which are easy to remember for a child of any age. Merry Christmas!

Christmas painting "Kolyada".

Author: Kapitonova Olga Fedorovna. Educator MBDOU No. 1 "Trickle" GO "Zhatay" The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the city of Yakutsk, the village of "Zhatay".
Let me present to your attention a master class on making a Christmas picture for preschool children.
In my work, I use a mixed technique of fine art - gouache, pastel.
Appointment: Christmas decoration for the group, New Year's craft, the picture can be hung on the wall, decorate the corner for parents in the hallway, as a gift for the Christmas holiday, for the competition.

Description: This master - class is intended for educators, teachers of additional education, methodologists and for parents.
According to church tradition, on the night of January 7 (December 25, old style), Jesus Christ was born. The holiday of Christmas is considered the greatest, universal and most joyful. Christmas is preceded by a forty-day fast, which ends with Christmas Eve, or Christmas Eve. And since the reign of the Roman emperor Justinian, the winter Christmastide is also celebrated, which begins a week before Christmas and continues until Epiphany. It has long been customary to call the first week of Christmastide as Holy evenings, and the second, Terrible evenings, or called Kolyada. As soon as the first Christmas day of Terrible evenings began, little harnesses appeared on the street, teenagers dressed up at dusk, and by nightfall the adults were already dancing, singing and introducing themselves. The girls loved to dress up in a man's dress, and young men in a woman's. Faces were painted over with soot, home-made "tow-hairs" were put on their heads, teeth cut from turnips were inserted into their mouths, and ox horns were attached to the caps, sometimes turning the mummed into a terrible devil.
Kolyada is the god of the ancient Slavs who brought people a calendar. The name "calendar" consists of two words: Kolyady Dar. This means that it was a gift to the people of Kolyada himself. Also, the god Kolyada taught people to look at the stars and see their patterns, from which the science of astrology was subsequently formed.
The time of winter holidays and Christmas in our time used to be a time when people glorified Kolyada and sang small songs to him in order to receive other happy gifts from him. At this time, children and adults used to go to the yards of neighbors and simply sang songs glorifying the coming of the new year, new life, songs of thanks to the gods.
During Christmas carols, it was customary to meet with joy the carols, and after the performance of Christmas carols, to present them with various Christmas gifts and sweets - mainly, these were sweets, cookies and other Christmas sweets. Not only did the poor people go caroling, but also many wealthy city and country people loved to sing Christmas carols during these holidays. Some relatives organized a kind of competition, who would bring the most gifts received for Christmas carols - this was considered a good sign for the coming year. If the carol-man received many gifts in response to his songs, this meant that he would have a rich and prosperous year. It was also considered a good sign to present Christmas carols - in this case, God himself will take care of the donor and give him his gifts, which in all respects exceed the gifts of people presented during Christmas carols. In this case, God will generously return the giver with all those benefits that will be necessary for him in difficult times - either health, or a happy chance, or a necessary meeting.
Target: Drawing of a Christmas plot "Kolyada" in a mixed technique.
Tasks:
Educational - to teach children to draw figures, distinguishing their characteristic features; draw in different ways of painting; to acquaint with the history of the Russian traditional holiday "Christmas".
Developing - to develop creativity, imagination, the ability to embody plots of a festive mood in a drawing.
Educational - to form interests in the traditions of the native land, to evoke an emotional response to the plot picture.
For work we need:
Whatman paper is white, format A-3, A-2 - 2 pieces;
Gouache;
brushes No. 2, No. 3;
oil crayons (pastels);

Simple pencil;
eraser;
black felt-tip pen;
cotton pads;
double sided tape;
stationery knife;
ruler 40 cm;
palette;
scissors.

Painting "Kolyada".

Stages of work
1. Preliminary work: Select a drawing from a children's reader, on a Christmas theme.
2. Draw the silhouettes of children on a Whatman A-3 format with a simple pencil, on the left side of the Whatman paper.

3. Draw a church on the right side of the Whatman paper.

4. After the silhouettes of the children and the church have been drawn, circle the drawings with a black felt-tip pen so that the contours of the drawing are clearly visible.

5. Then we paint the silhouettes in different colors.

6. After the silhouettes are painted, draw stars and paint with gouache in blue.

7. Make a background for our picture, take blue crayons and color the whole picture.

8. Then rub the whole picture with cotton pads.

9. It turned out an almost finished drawing, but in order to make the picture more beautiful, I make a mat.

10. To do this, I take a Whatman paper of A-2 format and cut out a frame for my picture, on the back of the Whatman paper make marks according to the dimensions of the future mat. Using a simple pencil and ruler.

11. Using a ruler, draw a square, connect the corners of the square diagonally with straight lines. We make cuts along the drawn lines with a knife.

12. Cut out the inner square. We fold the edge inward so that the edges are even.

13. After our frame is ready, I paint it in the same way as the background of the picture, but only select light colors, so the plot of the picture is evening, then the frame should be brighter so that it is not too dark. Choosing colors in accordance with the picture, I chose a bright yellow color.

14. The last step remains - to connect the mat, drawing and frame. First, using double-sided tape, stick the image on a sheet of Whatman paper the size of a mat so that it is just inside the "window". Along the perimeter on the inside of the mat, glue double-sided tape, cutting it into 1 cm pieces. You need to glue the tape strictly in the middle of the mat.

15. Then carefully glue the painting to the mat. It is best to secure the horizontal sides first, then the vertical ones. Carefully fold the paper back and remove the protective strips from the tape.

16. After the picture has been glued, glue tape at the corners of the inner mat, glue the frame around the perimeter of the mat, then add more pieces of tape on the sides.

17. Align the picture. But if the inner light frame of the mat could not be made the same on all sides, take a knife or scissors and very carefully correct these irregularities - cut the inner mat.

How to dress up for Christmas carols is important for everyone who is going to celebrate this holiday. Despite its pagan roots, it still remains popular in many cities of Russia. It was based on an ancient legend, according to which, on the longest night of the year, the terrible monster Korochun ate the Sun.

history of the holiday

It was important for our ancestors how to dress up for carols. After all, Korochun was considered an ancient Slavic dark deity, whom everyone tried to resist.

Our ancestors set themselves the symbolic task of protecting the newborn by performing various magical actions. This became the basis of this traditional folk festival.

And today you can see carollers carrying the symbol of the heavenly body on a long pole. As soon as the first star appeared, our ancestors entered the courtyard, woke up the owner of the house, began to sing the so-called great songs, in which they glorified the sun, moon and stars, waiting for the daylight to rise again.

Scientists believe that these songs were the first carols, which got their name in honor of the goddess of the sky.

Why are carols on January 7?

Why is there Christmas caroling? This question even today baffles many who find out that the holiday was originally timed to coincide with the longest night of the year, that is, it should have been celebrated from December 24 to 25.

The fact is that if you count according to the new style, then the carols will fall on the night of January 6-7. In addition, Christian preachers who came to Russia in 988 faced strong and highly developed traditions of cultural rituals. In order not to chop off the shoulder, it was decided to seek a compromise. So they united Kolyada with Christmas. Since then, there has been a tradition of caroling at Christmas.

Interestingly, Orthodox priests urge not to confuse folk carols with church ones. The latter tell about the birth of Christ, praise the Savior. And folk are called human parables. In them, in a song and half-joking form, it tells about the heavenly bodies and the household chores of ordinary people.

The classic carol is a short Christmas story about one of the greatest events in Orthodoxy - the birth of Christ.

How should you carol?

In the modern world, caroling has gone far from the original traditions. Today it is, first of all, a way to spend free time in a fun and original way. Therefore, it attracts mainly young people and schoolchildren. This is a big plus for them. After all, according to tradition, it is customary to treat carollers with sweets, food, or even encourage money.

True caroling is a kind of performance, the organization of which must be approached with all responsibility. Therefore, roles are assigned in advance among all its participants, costumes and corresponding attributes are being prepared.

Caroling stages

As a rule, caroling takes place in several stages. To begin with, carols ask the owner of the house for permission to sing funny songs on his territory. As soon as they approach the house, they begin to sing the so-called window or courtyard songs, which contain this request.

When the decision to let the motley company into the house has been made, you can proceed directly to the caroling itself. Lofty speeches are addressed to each of the family members.

It is important to perform the songs as best as possible so that the owners do not have a desire to drive away inexperienced carols. In this case, it is appropriate to proceed to the final part of the ceremony - this is the performance of short benevolent couplets. In conclusion, you can ask for a reward for yourself, always in the same song form.

Why Dress Up?

Before you go caroling, it is important to decide for yourself why it is customary to dress up for carols?

Do not forget that the original purpose of this festival was to scare and drive away the evil Slavic god who dared to steal the sun. Therefore, our ancestors gathered in large companies, dressed up in costumes of animals or all kinds of monsters in order to scare the evil Korochun. How to dress up for carols?

How to start caroling?

If you decide to go caroling, then first of all get together in a large company. The more people, the better, the faster the evil Slavic god will be afraid of your crowd and retreat.

It is important to distribute roles among all participants, to decide how to dress up for Christmas carols. There are several traditional images among the people that can be found in almost any group of carols. And you can give room to imagination, dressing up in whoever you please.

Bear and goat remain some of the most popular characters. Often among the carollers there are biblical heroes, for example, shepherds who brought Christ the first gifts, angels or King Herod.

Roles of carols

You need to choose a person who will get the main role in this performance. They call him the star. He carries a star on a long stick, a key symbol of Christmas. This is a mandatory attribute for Christmas carols. It can be cut out of thick good cardboard and decorated with various glitters. Or take broken toys for this purpose. Rain and multi-colored pom-poms will do.

Another option is to build a rigid wire frame by wrapping it with bright colored rags, foil or rain. It is best to ensure that the star is octagonal, even remotely resembling the one of Bethlehem. In the center, you can place the classic image of the Mother of God with the baby.

An important character is Mehonosha. This is a person who will carry a bag for gifts, food and money all the way. This bag is considered a very important item. It cannot be taken into the hands of strangers. The hosts you come to visit should put gifts there without touching it.

You choose the size of the bag yourself. It is customary to make it from dense fabric, preferably in bright and varied colors. But in extreme cases, dark material is also suitable. Then on it with gouache draw the heavenly bodies and necessarily the star of Bethlehem. Or make an applique out of colored paper.

Caroling outfit

The choice of clothing should be approached carefully. This article will show you how to dress up for carols for children and their parents. Folklore elements will look good in clothes. It can be a traditional national costume or the outfit of a popular Christmas character.

The Goat remains a popular character for a long time, which symbolizes prosperity. If you got this role, then you can take an old sheepskin coat or sheepskin coat, which you turn inside out. To top off the look, buy a goat mask or simply attach neat horns to your hat. The goat should be playful and noisy.

By the way, the mask is one of the important attributes of this holiday. Previously, they were made from scrap materials - birch bark, fabric, leather. Today, they are most often bought in stores. For caroling, a mask of almost any animal that can be found in the forests of our country is suitable.

When deciding how to dress a boy for carols, the image of a bear is often chosen. You can also do it yourself. It is enough to take an old fur coat and a hat with earflaps. And draw a mustache and nose with a black marker or pencil. For the image of a bear, a clumsy clumsy gait is suitable, then you will definitely be recognized as the classic Russian Mikhail Potapych.

For two people, they often try on a filly costume. It can be found in children's theaters, circuses, at matinees. It is easy to make at home, using a stick as a base. A cardboard horse head and a dark cloth are attached to it, under which both people will hide.

There are many options for caroling outfits. What costumes are worn for carols, you have now learned from this article. It all depends solely on your desire, imagination and capabilities. Nowadays, almost any of the listed outfits can be purchased at the store. And if you show your imagination, then it's easy to make it with your own hands from everything that happens to be at home.

As a child, I remember that on Christmas day we gathered in a company and went to congratulate neighbors and relatives on the holiday. True, one or two people knew schedrivok and Christmas carols, which were suggested by the parents, but they “seasoned” their “festive congratulatory begging” with cheerful Ukrainian and Russian songs. The mob was provided with sweets, pies, a pretty penny and even (oh, happiness - a tangerine!) The mob was provided!))) Now these Christmas traditions are preserved, as I think, in small villages and towns, well, certainly not in megacities. But a lot of generous songs, pulled from "grandmother's chests", appeared in the press!)) What can not but rejoice!
And as for the paintings ... Somehow a gallery of works by Ukrainian artists turned out by itself. I looked at my folder and was surprised that in the published posts on the theme "Kolyada" there are also a lot of paintings by Ukrainian artists. Apparently, because the carols there were brighter, louder, more elegant. Or maybe they remember and honor folk traditions better ?! I don’t know, but see for yourself - how much kindness, fun and positive there are in the pictures below, how bright and joyful they are!)))

Carols taken

Carols for Christmas. Photo: O. Levchenko / Lori photo bank

From Vyatka, the people called it holy time. This multi-day holiday was divided into two parts. From January 7 to 14, on holy evenings, they chanted carols and arranged girlish fortune-telling, and from January 15 to 19, they also had great fun, but they were afraid of terrible evenings - the time of the revelry of dark forces.

On the day of the Christmas break, the food was especially tasty. The hostesses cooked a pig with porridge or a boar's head with horseradish, jelly or aspic from a pig. The people believed that during a festive dinner, the souls of deceased ancestors come to the house, and food was left on the table for them until morning.

On Christmas night, be sure to turn to the stars in the night sky. If there were a lot of them, an abundant year for mushrooms and berries was expected. And in the morning, the rite of "sowing the hut" was certainly carried out. Saying the words: “On the living, on the fruitful and on health,” three times they threw handfuls of oats and wheat.

“In Ryazan province, they went in droves under the windows to ask for pies. Ahead of all was a maiden called a mehonoska; she was carrying a purse for a cake collection; it was she who led the crowd and disposed of the division of the collection. "

To the delight of the village children, figurines of cows, bulls, sheep, birds and roosters were baked in all houses. They were used to decorate the table, windows and were presented to carols.

Each family expected the carols, prepared a treat for them and listened to the carols with sincere joy:

Kolyada, kolyada!
And there is a kolyada
On the eve of Christmas.
Kolyada has come
Brought Christmas.
Give you, Lord,
On the field of nature
On the threshing floor it is hushed,
Kvashny gushchina,
Sporin's on the table
The sour cream is thick
The cows are doyna!

For the treat, they thanked:

A good man
Rye is born good:
A spikelet of thick
The straws are empty!

On Christmastide days, an empty table was considered a bad omen, so a ritual roll was invariably laid on it, which was treated to those who came to carol. The hospitable owners believed: the more guests gather in their house, the better the chickens will sit on the eggs.

After a cheerful round of houses, the young people gathered in a sitting hut for a general feast, where they shared and ate everything that their fellow villagers presented. Then, dressed in new clothes, the youth danced to the tune to avoid crop failures, listened to fairy tales and wondered about their fate.

The Christmastide period coincided with the Orthodox holiday of the Nativity of Christ. Our ancestors believed that the gates to a good family life open on Christmas night. Therefore, these days they conducted fortune-telling about the future family life: about the betrothed-mummer, about the future husband and about predictions for an early marriage. Marriage and marriage in Russia were treated with special seriousness and responsibility, therefore, fortune-telling was distinguished by a great variety. The most popular were fortune-telling with a mirror and a candle "The bridegroom-mummer, come to me dressed up", as well as rituals with wax on the water and with a comb placed under the pillow for the night. Fortune-telling, like carols, created an atmosphere of Christmastime fun.

If the girl pulled a smooth log from the firebox, this meant that the husband would be good, and if it was knotty, he would be bad. If the log is thick, the husband will be rich, and the thin one will be poor.

Also, the qualities of the future spouse in Russia were determined with the help of ... a rooster. The girls threw various objects on the floor and let the rooster go. If he ran to the grain, the husband would be rich, if he was a drinker for water, he would be an avid gambler for money, and if he went to ash, he would be a smoker.
