  • Autumn holidays in 2017 2018 academic year will start on October 28, 2017 and end on November 5, 2017. The duration of the autumn holidays in 2017 will be 9 days.
  • Winter New Year holidays in 2017 2018 academic year will begin on December 23, 2017 and will last until January 7, 2018. The duration of the winter holidays will be 16 days.
  • Spring break in 2017 2018 academic year will begin on March 24, 2018 and will last until April 1, 2018. The duration of spring break will be 9 days.

Additional holidays or postponement of holidays in schools and other educational institutions are possible for the following reasons:

  • Low air temperature- minus 25 degrees Celsius for elementary school; minus 28 degrees - for high school; minus 30 degrees for students in grades 10 and 11.
  • Low temperature in classrooms. When the air temperature in the classrooms is below +18 degrees, classes are prohibited.
  • Quarantine and exceeding the threshold of morbidity. Quarantine can be declared in a separate school, a separate district, city or region if the epidemic threshold of incidence of 25% of the total number of students is exceeded.

In addition to the traditional Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year, the following dates for public holidays are set:

The winter vacation

The period of winter school holidays depends on the system of education that is adopted at the school.

Students in quarters have a rest in the winter once: in late December - early January. Holidays last 10-14 days. First graders receive an extra one-week winter holiday in February.

Students in trimesters have a rest in winter twice: in late December - early January and in February. The first vacation lasts 10-14 days, the second - a week.

Winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year when studying in quarters (Moscow)

For students in quarters in Moscow, the winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year will be held from Monday, January 1 to Wednesday, January 10, 2018 inclusive. In fact, the rest will begin on Saturday, December 30 (with a five-day training system). Students will return to class on Thursday, January 11th.

Winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year when studying in quarters (regions of the Russian Federation)

For students in quarters in the regions of Russia (all but Moscow), the winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year will take place from Monday December 25, 2017 to Monday January 8, 2018 inclusive. In fact, the rest will begin on Saturday, December 23 (with a five-day training system). Schoolchildren will return to classes on Tuesday, January 9, after the end of the New Year holidays.

First-graders will receive additional winter rest from Monday February 19 (actually from Saturday February 17) to Sunday February 25, 2018.

Winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year when studying in trimesters (Moscow)

For students in trimesters in Moscow, the winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year will last 2 periods:

  • from Monday, January 1 to Wednesday, January 10, 2018 inclusive (in fact, the rest will begin from Saturday, December 30 - with a five-day training system);

Winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year when studying in trimesters (regions of the Russian Federation)

For students in trimesters in the regions of Russia (all except Moscow), the winter holidays in the 2017-2018 academic year will last 2 periods:

Additional holidays

The administration of an educational institution may introduce additional vacations in winter if:

The air temperature is below -25 °С (for students in grades 1-4), -28 °С (grades 5-9) and -30 °С (grades 10-11);

The temperature in classrooms is below +18 °С;

The epidemic threshold of morbidity exceeds 25% of the total number of students in the school.

When will spring break be in the 2017 school year?

In order to be able to answer the question “when will spring break be in schools?” You need to understand the system of formation of the school calendar.

In educational institutions, as you know, there are two different systems of education:

  • by trimesters;
  • by quarters.

If a school educational institution chooses a trimester system of education, then students study from September to May in this way: five weeks of study and one week of vacation. In this case, spring break will begin on April 5 and end on April 11.

When the school chooses a quarterly training schedule, the following vacation sheet is set for schoolchildren:

  • : the last days of October - the first week of November;
  • winter holidays: last days of December - ten days of January;

for first-graders and students of correctional classes, an additional vacation week is provided;

  • spring break: a week at the end of March;
  • summer holidays: three months from June to August.

In this case, school holidays in the spring period will begin on March 27 and end on April 3.

It is worth noting that there are no uniform legislative norms that would establish dates and do not exist. The administration of each school independently draws up a schedule of rest for schoolchildren. Therefore, the dates of spring holidays in different schools in Russia may vary.

The need and importance of spring break

First of all, spring holidays should be provided to all schoolchildren in view of the impact on the fragile organisms of children of beriberi and lack of sunlight. Also, one cannot discount the general psycho-emotional upsurge due to the arrival of a warm season.

What to do on spring break?

Graduates and students of the ninth grade can use this time wisely - without wasting precious hours, it is better to prepare for the Unified State Examination and the GIA. And the rest of the students, for a whole spring week, can pull up their “tails” great and master the material that, for some reason, could not be understood.

Of course, a child can study only if he feels the strength to study, and not devote this time to rest. It is more correct not to overstrain and not overload a tired mind with classes, because spring break is given for this, so that students can fully rest from study. You can do school assignments every day, but very little.

It is better not to plan for this period long trips that involve climate change. It will be much more useful for the child to have a quiet rest, without unnecessary worries and stress. It would be advisable to adhere to the same daily regimen that the student had before.

Fresh air during spring break should be in abundance, and exercise should be moderate. Depending on weather conditions, it is possible to sled and ski if the spring is still snowy; or remember about simple walks or roller skates if the spring is warm enough and indulges schoolchildren on fine days.

The decision on when to dismiss schoolchildren on vacation in Russia is made by the educational institution itself. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Education, the duration of vacations, their start and end dates are determined by the school. Only the total duration of study and vacation periods is regulated, allowing children to cope with the curriculum without "overloads":


  • the academic year for first-graders should last at least 33 weeks, for students of other classes - at least 34;

  • the period of summer rest for children is at least 8 weeks;

  • short vacations within the school year must total at least 30 days, and first grade students are allowed an extra week.

Despite the given freedom of choice, most Russian educational institutions adhere to the traditional scheme that developed back in Soviet times when approving the vacation schedule: four quarters, a week of rest in November, two for the New Year holidays, another week at the end of March. Regional departments of education usually send out recommended vacation dates in advance of the start of the school year, but the final decision remains with the school administration.


Moscow is an exception. Here, vacation dates are the same and are set by the Metropolitan Department of Education for two options for the study schedule - traditional (quarter) and trimester (modular), when the year is divided into equal intervals and five weeks are followed by one vacation.


In the regions, the dates may vary slightly, but the vast majority of schools, gymnasiums and lyceums will have the same curriculum.

School year start and end dates

2017-2018 academic year traditionally starts September 1, on the Day of Knowledge. This year, the first week of school will be very short - the first day of autumn falls on the calendar on Friday, so that students will have the opportunity to smoothly move from rest to study.


The end date of the school year may be slightly shifted due to the peculiarities of the academic schedule. Primary grades will be the first to leave for the summer holidays - their school year will end May 22-24. Middle and high school students will study for a few days longer, for them the last day of school will be May 25-26. In Moscow schools that have chosen a modular mode of study, high school students will sit at their desks the longest - until the 31st.


9th and 11th grade students taking final exams will be exempted from study hassle in accordance with their exam schedule. The Unified State Examination and the OGE will begin in the last week of May and will run until the end of June.

The third quarter is the longest and usually the most difficult for students. In order to “unload” the smallest, in February, first-grade students are given an extra week of rest. In addition, the February holidays are recommended for students of correctional schools, and in some educational institutions even the entire “primary school” can rest in February - from 1 to.


The timing of additional holidays is the most variable, in some regions they are preferred to be held at the beginning of February, and in some - at the end of the month, on the week when Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated.


In 2018, the first classes will rest for either a week from 5 to 11 February(this option may be the most common), or from the 17th to the 25th.

The date for which spring break is “aspiring” is April 1. In the fourth quarter usually began on this day. In 2018, the first day of April will be Sunday. And in most schools, the rest schedule will be like this:

Since the final decision on vacation dates is made by the school management, the dates of their start or end in different educational institutions may not coincide with the “average” schedule.


There are several ways to find out the vacation schedule at your school.


  1. Go to the official website of the school. By law, all "calendar" information must be contained there. As a rule, it is located in the "Organization of the educational process" or "Schedule" section.

  2. Look into the child. Vacation schedules may be posted in the announcement or parent information sections. But even if this is not the case, you can try to "scroll" the magazine for the period of the proposed vacation and "calculate" the exact dates - no lessons will be scheduled for them;

  3. Ask your child's class teacher. The schedule is usually approved in the summer, sometimes even earlier. By the time the school “roll calls” are held, teachers usually already have this information.

  4. Call the reception and check the vacation dates with the secretary of the educational institution.
