It is not hard to guess that the term "tatting" came to us from the French language. Due to the fact that the knot of tatting is knitted with the help of a shuttle, this weaving technique is called shuttle. But first, you can master the needle technique for beginners.

The tatting knot technique is based only on knotting. The instrument is in the right hand, the rest of the operation with the thread is performed with the left hand. Thanks to simple combinations, you can weave any knots you tatting. From collars to napkins.

Knowing the basics of making a simple double knot, or square knot, you can easily master the tatting knot technique.

The tatting scheme is quite old. In ancient times, shuttles were more cumbersome, and the threads were thicker and more stubborn. Now the execution has become easier and more convenient, since the shuttle is not so large, and the quality of the threads has various variations.

In addition to the shuttle, this technique uses a thick needle and hook. All these tools can be used in the manufacture of one product or different ones.
Unfortunately, a small amount of information about the history of the tatting technique has reached our days. This is due to the fact that the data in which this weaving technique was mentioned has many erroneous opinions and judgments.

It is believed that this weaving technique came to Europe and the Eastern countries. For the first time in Europe, the tatting technique appeared in Spain. Then it spread across the continent and from France came to Russia.
In the 17th century, tatting was at the height of fashion. The decoration of clothing and interior was very significant at this time. In addition to the classic schemes for decorating a wardrobe with the tatting technique, one could see accessories made in this technique, such as:

What you need to have on hand:
  1. Long thick needle

Thread the needle. Place the thread on your finger. Put a needle on top of the thread. If you have an idea of how the loops are strung on the needle while knitting. Then follow these steps to the point where you want to create the lace.

In order to flesh out your pattern, you can use the pico pattern. When you have completed the loop, start this step again. Tie 4 more knots tatting.

In order to get the picot, you need to leave some loose thread from 5 to 6 knots. Complete one more knot.

The scheme is clear. Thus, you are able to complete a huge number of knots using the tatting technique and create many patterns to your taste and style.

Decorating a product with metal patterns using the tatting technique is called ankars.

This technique focuses on the shading of the product. In fact, ankars is a tatting weaving that imitates metal. Perhaps with the help of steel-colored threads, sometimes beads and beads are used. This unusual weave is misleading into thinking that the piece is actually made of metal. Although, it is woven from threads.
There are a lot of works in this technique, it can be both earrings and hairpins, as well as elegant necklaces and tiaras.

Working material

To create such divine beauty, you and I need to prepare material that will come in handy along the way:

  1. Usually done with shuttles.

Such tools have their own priorities:

  • nodules are performed by any method
  • the thread does not unwind

But there are also negative aspects:

  • yarn is wound by hand
  • several shuttles are required for multi-color patterns

A hook hook can be used.

The plus is:

  • bobbins are inserted into the middle, which can be wound on a machine
  • no need for a separate hook
  • in unwinding
  • you need to own special knotting

Basic elements of crochet tatting

Here are the main parts, without which the base of the openwork fabric is impossible:

  • double knot, consisting of a forward and reverse knot;
  • pico;
  • arc;
  • ring.

By learning how to complete the described fragments, you will be able to create whole lace fabrics. In the meantime, let's start with an introduction to weaving techniques.

Types of nodules (Y)

"Hercules" knot - used to fasten threads of different shades or at the time of rupture.

Direct and reverse knot

Before starting, we will carry out preparatory work. Threads of two colors are wound on two shuttles, their ends are connected by a "Herculean" knot. We take it between the first and index fingers of the left hand. The white thread is directed away from ourselves along the clock hand, we throw it on the remaining fingers of the left hand (LC), and turns around the little finger three times. All nodules will form from this area.

We take the tool with bright yarn in the right brush (PC) with the first and index fingers. This is the fiber on which the knots will begin to form.

Straight knot (PU)

The thread from the device in the right handle (PR) is thrown over the fingers of the PC.

The shuttle is inserted under the thread between the index and central fingers of the LK, is pulled out over the yarn - the leading fiber is pulled. If everything is done correctly, then the tool with the main yarn will pass under the yarn, sliding off the fingers of the right hand.

Reverse knot (OU)

In the process of creating the OU, the yarn is not produced, the device is passed through the main fiber in the opposite direction: immediately above the yarn between the index and central fingers of the LR, then below it. The main thread is pulled, the middle finger of the LR moving, forms an OU according to the scheme of creating a straight knot.

Thus, we get a double knot (DN), which is the basis of all weaving using the tatting technique. We should have it white.

Having learned how to create double nodes, you can move on to the next step - learn how to create pico.

Pico

Pico is a fragment that acts as a connector and decor. It is carried out by knitting a new loop six millimeters from the previous one. To do this, while forming a buttonhole, we hold it at a distance with a finger beam. Further, the finished loop moves close to the previous one.

So we met with you with another important motive.

Ring

An equally important element is the ring.

It is created with just one device. The main part is a loop. It begins with a full-fledged circulation around the fingers. The attachment point is held by the first and second fingers. The buttonhole is called working, and the thread from the second finger of the LR to the shuttle is the main one. Then we collect the required number of loops and pico. After that, the buttonhole is removed from the fingers and, grasping the main thread, the circle is tightened.

Here is another piece of lace ready.

Connections of motives

All connections in tatting occur through pico.

I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the common connections of parts.

Weave a circle

Clutch. We knit the next circle until it engages, then a hook is inserted from above into the P. of the original circle, we pull out the working buttonhole and pull the shuttle into it from above to the lower part. The working buttonhole is put on the fingers and tightened, as when creating a knot. Then a reverse knot is performed.

We will also weave the rest of the circles until the penultimate circle.

The remaining ring is double-fastened.

The first attachment takes place in the same way as the rest. The second fastening is done with a reverse link. Rotate the fragment so that the desired picot of the first ring is under the end node that encloses the circle. The tool is inserted into the P. in the upper direction, capturing the main buttonhole and holding the device from top to bottom. The working buttonhole is put on the LR, the clutch is tightened, secured with a reverse knot. The ring is carried out to the end and tightened. Here we have such a wonderful flower.

So we learned how to make simple details using the tatting method for beginners, learned the basics of this technique and projects. Now, novice needlewomen, armed with patience and great desire, can try to knit jewelry: earrings, pendant or necklace. Handmade tatting jewelry looks original. If you decorate it with stones, then it will look bright and rich, attracting the attention of others with its appearance. Be creative - and you will succeed!

Tatting lace earrings

Tatting is a handicraft in which elegant patterns are created from threads. Jewelry made using this technique will add elegance to any look. Lace earrings, headbands, masks, tiaras, or original napkins and bookmarks for books - all this will be interesting to do with your own hands. Tatting originated in the East, then became popular in England and France, and has now spread throughout the world. Thanks to a simple set of tools, such an activity is available to any needlewoman. Tatting schemes vary in scope and complexity. Gaining experience, you can create real masterpieces. Well, for a start, it is enough to take a shuttle, threads and open your favorite simple scheme.

What you need to get started

To weave tatting patterns, a needle or shuttle is required, which in this case is a traditional tool. To try out a new kind of needlework for yourself, it is enough to purchase a classic shuttle, which is very inexpensive in cost. It involves some inconvenience - manual winding and the inability to work with several colors at once. For the first time, it will be enough, and for a more advanced level, the corresponding professional tools are sold.

Hand-painted shuttles

The second, which you cannot do without, of course, is the thread. There are several requirements for them:

  • strength (after all, knots are woven from them);
  • uniform thickness;
  • good twist.

Tatting threads must be strong and

In addition to items that you will have to deal with constantly, it is desirable that you have at hand:

  • Crochet hook (for attaching elements).
  • Darning needle (to get rid of incorrect knots).
  • Sewing needle (for tying the ends).
  • Scissors (for cutting off the ends).
  • Safety pin (for creating arcs).
  • Fishing line (for working with beads).

Essential elements

Tatting jewelry looks incredible. At first glance, it’s hard to believe that you can learn how to make them with your own hands. But, as usual, if you start to understand, then gradually complex things become simple. Tatting lace patterns are made up of single elements - knots. Straight lines together with reverse nodes make up double ones, and they, in turn, are the main elements.

Let's start in order, with the direct node. The left hand is circled with a working thread, going clockwise. The end of the thread is held in the right hand. The lead thread from the shuttle is thrown over the right hand and the shuttle passes under the working thread. The shuttle is threaded up and creates a knot, and the leading thread wraps around the worker. The straight knot is ready, a start has been made.

Important!

The reverse knot technology distinguishes it from the direct one in that everything is done on the right hand, and the working thread ties the leading one. And the sequential execution of these elements creates a double knot.

A popular element is the ring. To create it, just double knots come in handy. The end of the thread (5-7 cm) is held with the left hand. The right hand with the shuttle encircles the left and creates a loop. Then double knots are woven and the loop is tightened, forming a ring.

Weave a ring using the tatting technique

As often as rings, arcs are used in tatting weaving. But this already requires two shuttles. It is better to learn the technique of creating arcs and more complex elements from training videos (thanks to the Internet, and after all, it was not so easy to find information on this craft before).

Tatting bracelet in boho style

Often in boho outfits you can see brooches, medallions, bracelets, woven using the tatting technique using buttons. First you need to figure out how to introduce them into the weaving of threads. The process should be broken down into several parts. First, the selected pattern is woven, up to the button. Let's say you are making a ring. After the half of the ring has been completed, use a pico to attach the button. Continue weaving until the next piece to be connected to the button. If you are making an arc, then connect it with a leading thread. As a result, complete all parts of the circuit and enjoy the new decoration in your own unique style. You can think of as many options for decorating with a button as you like, here is just one example:

  1. Diagram of two rings connected to a button: 5n * 8n * 8n * 5.
  2. Two rings in the middle and two on the edges: 5n * 5n5n * 5.
  3. Arcs that are between the rings and the arc on the button: 7n * 1n * 1n * 7.
  4. Side arcs: 7n * 1n * 1n * 7n * 1n * 1n * 7.

Tatting is a certain kind of weaving from threads. The products are airy, delicate, interesting and colorful. Moreover, the product can be supplemented with beads, beads, buttons and other decorations. Then the product turns out to be even more interesting. And you can create whole items of clothing- collars, cuffs, lace straps and so on. For the home, you can also make tablecloths, napkins, potholders and others.

Materials for making tatting

Tatting can be done in different ways, so you may need different tools. Moreover, each needlewoman can make patterns using tools that are convenient for her. In this case, the decorations are obtained more accurate and correct.

The most basic tools are

How is tatting done?

This kind of needlework must be mastered carefully. At the heart of this type of needlework is the correct execution of knots on the main thread. Novice needlewomen need to understand the basic techniques and learn how to perform them correctly. Get to know the shuttle, learn how to hold it correctly. It is best to start learning weaving from a photo or video.

When the main elements are obtained, you can pick up a simple scheme and try to complete any element with your own hands.

The most basic trick in tatting is the knot. The knots are made in a certain way and this is how the main elements are obtained. And the whole product is assembled from individual elements..

Main node

The main one is a straight knot. The end of the thread is held in the right hand, the thread goes to the left hand and wraps around the arm in a clockwise direction. The thread coming from the shuttle is applied to the right hand. The hook is inserted under the working thread and follows up. Thus, the working thread wraps around the main thread. So, the first node turned out, you still need to practice to consolidate the skill.

Another important knot is the reverse. All actions of the straight knot must be turned to the right hand. Moreover, the main thread should twine around the worker.

If you perform a direct knot, and after it a reverse one, it turns out a double knot.

Elements in tatting

  • Semiring, performed using straight and reverse knots.
  • The ring is obtained from the sequential execution of double knots. The number of knots determines the size of the ring.
  • Arcs, in order to complete them, it is necessary to put into operation 2 shuttles.
  • Combined rings are difficult to perform, you need to constantly check with the diagram. If it is worth introducing beads, then beginner needlewomen are advised to sew them on after completion of work, their correct location is difficult to determine during work.
  • Pico Josephine, such complex elements will require a lot of perseverance and knowledge of the basic elements.

More and more elements in weaving are being created and they are more and more interesting and modern.

If the needlewoman with her own hands has mastered the techniques of knitting patterns, then she can independently choose the necessary pattern and make her own tatting scheme. Napkin patterns are suitable for beginner needlewomen. They are easy to carry out, they have the same elements. Moreover, it is easier to learn how to fasten the thread on napkins.

Tatting brooch can be very bright and textured, but you can follow a simple scheme of muted thread tones. In any case, tatting looks very interesting.

To master this species needlework can take a lot of time, but all the time spent will pay off after making original and airy accessories using the tatting technique.

Weaving tatting

Do you love lace? Probably everyone loves them. After all, you can decorate not only dresses and blouses with lace, but also any home textile - it is so elegant and cute. Today we want to introduce you to the tatting technique - the process of creating lace from threads using an original technique.

If we talk about processes, then tatting knitting combines the techniques of different types of needlework: here you have a hook, knitting needles, and macrame, but at the same time it is something completely special. However, let's take a closer look at the technique - everything will immediately become clear to you.

Required tools

Tatting weaving, like any other handicraft, requires special tools and devices.

The main tatting device is the shuttle. Shuttles can be of different designs, but they have the same essence - to make it easier for you to work with long threads. Inside the shuttle there is a regular bobbin on which threads are wound (like in a sewing machine). Small shuttles are used for thin threads, and larger ones for thick ones.

Another equally important device is a hook and a needle. For tatting, special hooks and needles are used. The tatting hook resembles a Tunisian crochet hook, with a rather long, rounded handle and a small head. The tatting needle is very long compared to a regular needle (about 13 cm), evenly thick along its entire length, like a stocking needle, and, moreover, blunt. You don't have to buy both a needle and a crochet hook - just one tool is enough, depending on which you like best (or what seems more convenient).

You will also need good scissors and a regular darning needle to break up blemishes.

What to make lace from?

Tatting for beginners can seem a little difficult, so you need to be very meticulous about the choice of thread. In principle, any thread for crocheting with a thin crochet is suitable for lace - such as crochet or iris. But quality is paramount. Choose threads that are non-thick, soft, and not too slippery. Cotton iris is ideal. To notice all your mistakes, choose a yarn of light shades, on it all the reliefs are more noticeable.

Basic techniques

Whether you prefer crochet or needle tatting, there are just a few tatting techniques. Here are their names:

  • arc;
  • ring;
  • picot.

Everything else is a combination of these elements.

The basics of the technique are one, just one knot. Okay, two nodes. One of them is the main knot with which any elements are woven, and the second is a connecting knot for two cuts of threads.

The main knot of tatting is called a double knot. Let's study it right away.

Take a needle or crochet hook. Insert the thread into the needle, and if you have a hook, prepare a hook with wound threads.

Press the end of the thread against the tool with the thread behind it.

Throw the long end of the thread over your index finger, twist like a loop, and slide it over the tool. Now put the thread over your index finger again, twist the loop the other way and put it over the tool again. Everything. You've mastered the double knot tatting.

Cuts of threads along the length are connected by the so-called Hercules knot, which you can also easily learn to do.

Try to tie. Happened? Now you have mastered the tatting helper node.

First try

Well, let's go back to the double knot, which is on your needle or hook. Try to make a few more such knots, placing them one after another. You end up with a whole series of knots.

Let's start studying the elements of the tatting technique with a crochet hook and a needle. The first element we will study is called pico. To do this, place the next double knot some distance from your row of stitches. There is a long constriction between the knots. Now slide the knot over to the row of knots. The result is a protruding loop - pico.

Try knitting a small pattern, alternating rows of smooth double stitches and picot stitches.

Now let's learn a new trick. It is slightly different in execution on a hook and on a needle, although its essence remains the same. You need to discard the resulting pattern and secure it.

In the tatting technique with a needle, do this: hold the needle with one hand, and pull the loops to its eye with the other. The loops will slide off and the needles and thread. Keep pulling, pulling. There is already a small loop at the end. Insert a needle into it, tighten. Here you have a ring!

If you started crocheting tatting, you will be a little different. Thread the thread behind the little finger, wrap it around the head of the hook. Carefully pull the thread through the knitted pattern. You now have a decorative loop on your hook. Put another loop on the hook, grab the working thread and tighten the ring.
