Now place a thickness gauge at a distance equal to the thickness of the hinge plate and mark this distance on the face of the door. Mark the location for the next hinge 225 mm from the bottom edge of the door in the same way. If necessary, mark a place for the third loop between the first two.

3. How to make indentations. Take a beveled chisel the same width as the indentation. Place the chisel with a bevel towards the deepened part, across the groove at a distance of 2 mm from its edge and hit hard with a mallet to cut the door leaf to a depth equal to the thickness of the hinge plate. Do the same on the other end of the markup. Then place the chisel blade at the line marked on the end face, parallel to the face of the door, and cut towards it. Keep the chisel beveled down at a 45 degree angle across the groove. Hit the chisel with sharp blows. Then flip the chisel upside down, place it on the line marked on the face of the door, and select the wood towards the back edge of the groove. Then place the chisel vertically and cut from top to bottom from the top and bottom marks to trim the edges and clean out the indentations. Do the same with the other grooves.

Door trestles to make work easier

A simple fixture called door racks can be assembled from a few pieces of junk wood and cardboard. With their help, it is convenient to hold the door in place if you need to trim it to size or choose hinge nests. Goats are made from three small pieces of wood (50 by 25 mm) and two large pieces (150 by 50 mm). A pair of bars (50 x 25 mm) nailed across the bottom of the assembly serves as a stand and lifts the structure off the floor. The door with its mass presses the flexible bar (50 by 25 mm), presses the large bars against each other, which hold the door firmly.

4. How to hang the door. Place the flap of the hinge in the upper slot, mark the hole for the screws with a punch or awl and fix the hinges with screws of the appropriate size. Attach the remaining loops in the same way. Place the door in the box, tap in wedges from below and mark the two hinges on the jamb. Mark and select the hinge recesses in the frame in the same way as in the door, then hold the door with wedges and screw the hinge leaves to the frame with screws.

5. Marking of the spindle, lock and keyhole. Make a horizontal mark at the closing edge of the door at a height of one meter from the floor (the height can be varied as you like). Align the body of the lock to the drawn line and mark its bottom edge. Spread the planer strips to the thickness of the lock and draw two parallel lines perpendicular to the two horizontal lines that run along the center of the end of the door (insert in the figure). Set the distance in the thicknessing tool equal to the distance between the front part of the lock body and the center of the spindle hole, press the thicknessing tool against the end of the door and hang the dimensions of the lock on both front sides of the door. Mark the position of the keyhole. Draw the last vertical line centered between the previously drawn vertical lines.

6. Drilling holes for the spindle and keyhole. Select a drill diameter such that the spindle can easily rotate in the hole. Place the drill on the markings (on the front side of the door) and, fixing the door, drill through it. Repeat on the other side to finish the hole. The keyhole is drilled the same way.

7. Drilling the slot for the lock. Select a drill with a diameter equal to the thickness of the lock body. Measure the length of the lock body on the drill and wrap the drill in this place with insulating tape as a drill depth stop. Drill a number of holes along the line marking the slot for the lock body. Use a chisel and hammer to select and clean the lock slot and trim the edges.

8. Fastening the lock case and handles. Insert the lock body into the slot and mark the dimensions of the lock on the end of the door. Reinsert the lock into the slot and mark the locations for the screws. Screw the lock with the supplied screws. Push the spindle through the square hole in the lock body, which is located in front of the drilled hole on the front of the door, then put on the handle covers, the handles themselves and secure with screws.

9. Fastening the receiving pad. Close the door and mark the position of the tongue on the jamb. Open the door, hang the trim over the tongue and measure the distance from the edge of the trim to the front of the door. Transfer this distance to the jamb. Place the receiving patch over the marks and trace around it with a pencil. Make a recess with a chisel for the pad, then mark the screw hole and screw the pad to the jamb. Use a chisel to make slots for the tongue and latch. Bend the tab on the pad with a hammer, it serves as a guide for the tongue. Measure, cut and secure the door stoppers and trim.

It is not the easiest thing to do - installing a door block, especially if you do not have the necessary experience. And you also need to cut the lock into the interior door. But one should not rush, despite the desire to quickly get rid of the problem, mistakes will cause the door leaf to skew and the locking device failure. It is impossible to cope with the task without the necessary tools and devices. You should prepare:

• mallet (wooden hammer);
• a set of chisels;
• an electric drill with drills of various diameters;
• screwdriver or screwdriver;
• construction knife;
• ruler, pencil, square, tape measure;
• building level;
• thickness gauge, milling cutter.

We start hanging the door leaf

This can be done in two ways: first, install the frame in the doorway, and then work with the door leaf, or mount the door leaf in an unattended frame. The second way is easier for someone who does such work for the first time.
How to hinge a door? Step by step, the whole process can be represented as follows:

1. If the floor is level (which should be verified with a level and rule), the box can be laid on top of it. But in order not to damage the coating, you should use a substrate or do everything on a construction gantry.
2. The door leaf is placed in the box and the side posts are fixed in the lower part of it with adhesive tape. Before this, sheets of thick cardboard (about 3.5 mm thick) should be inserted between the parts of the box and the door leaf in order to prevent rubbing surfaces from forming, and it was possible to hang hinges and provide the door leaf with free movement. For double-leaf doors, a 5 mm gasket is installed between the leaves.
3. The width of the gaps must be the same.
4. To determine the location of the hinges, you need to find out the side of the door leaf close to the wall. The hinge pivot is always located on the opening side.
5. Lightweight paneled doors are attached with two hinges. To do this, it is enough to retreat from the upper and lower edges of the canvas by 200 mm and make marks from the side of the upper cuts of the looped "wings". If the door is heavy, made of solid wood, three hinges may be needed. An additional loop is installed in the middle.
6. The markings are completed and the door leaf must be removed from the box. The loops are applied to their places, and the contour of their "wings" is traced with a construction knife close to the edges.
7. Using a milling cutter or chisel with a hammer, you need to select the wood in the designated areas so that the "wings" are hidden in them flush. The chisel should first be resting against the marking line with a bevel upward at an angle of 45 degrees and, using a mallet, make a depression along the contour. After that, the chisel must be turned over and the layer of wood must be removed, moving from the edge to the middle of the contour.
8. With fine emery paper, sand the area treated with a chisel a little. If you overdid it with a selection of wood, you can cut out the gaskets from the sheets of paper and correct the situation.
9. The "wing" of the hinge is placed in the recess so that the axial rod is parallel to the side edge of the door leaf. An awl marks the places for screwing in the screws.
10. Holes are made using a thin drill, after which the loop is screwed into place. The screw heads should be hidden in the grooves of the hinge.
11. The second half is put on the hinge shaft and applied to the corresponding frame of the box to mark the wood removal zone. Preparing the box for fixing the hinge is done in the above way.

Installation of a lock and other accessories

Now let's figure out how to put the lock on the door. This is the next stage of work, on the quality of which the normal functioning of the locking mechanism depends. The instructions for attaching this hardware look like this.

1. Mark where the lock and door opening handle will be located. Usually this place is located below the middle of the door height, at the level of 800-1100 mm from the floor: it will be more convenient to use this way, especially if children live in the house.
2. There is no difference in mounting methods between a lock and a simple latch. Having figured out how to properly embed the lock, we will deal with the latch. Both mechanisms are installed in a cut-in method. First, the outline of the lock strip is marked on the end face and the timber is sampled in the same way as when installing the hinges.
3. Having applied the lock from the side of the plane of the door leaf so that the lock bar and the place of its installation are aligned at the level of the lock, we mark the place of drilling the hole for the keyhole and the handle.
4. Having picked up the required diameter, a feather drill, with the help of an electric drill we drill a through hole. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the drill enters the door array strictly perpendicular to its plane.
5. To avoid the formation of ragged edges on the side of the drill exit, a wooden block should be firmly pressed against the door leaf in this place.
6. On the side of the plate, the place of the recess is marked, which is necessary for installing the lock case. It must correspond to its geometrical dimensions and position. It is convenient to use the projection method, for which the position of the lock applied to the plane of the door is transferred to the end side.
7. Using a chisel (hammer) and a chisel, you need to knock out a recess. It is important not to overdo it: it will be very difficult to fix the situation. The degree of readiness is checked by fitting: the lock case must be completely and freely installed in its place. Sand the edges of the groove with sandpaper.
8. Now the lock can be installed in its place, securing it from the side of the plate with screws. The lever arms can also be locked.
9. Then a pencil lead is applied to the tab of the lock and a narrow strip of white paper is applied to the frame of the door frame in the appropriate place. Closing the door, we notice the position of the locking tongue in relation to the box, after which we mark the position of the counter plate and the wood sampling zone.
10. In a familiar way, we make a recess in the box for the plate and tongue, after which we fasten the part of the lock with screws.

Important: to avoid the formation of cracks in the solid wood, in the place where the screws are screwed in, it is required to drill holes with a thin drill.

How to cut hinges and a lock with a router

If you have purchased an expensive hard and valuable wood door, do not risk ruining it with a chisel. With a special tool and skills to work with it, everything can be done more accurately and faster. But for those who are unfamiliar with this method of working with wood, it is useful to learn how to cut a lock with a router.

We act as follows.

1. After removing the transport packaging, we determine the position of the door in the doorway and the position of the hinges. We outline these places.
2. We install the door leaf so that it is convenient to work. If there are no special clamps or supports, a pair of chairs will do, between which the door is placed on the edge.
3. We mark the place of installation of the hinges and the lock in exactly the same way as indicated in the previous section.
4. We deepen the contours of the hinge and the lock with the help of a sharp construction knife: this is necessary so that chips do not form on the surface during milling.
5. On a hand-held milling cutter, set the immersion depth of the cutting part and the parallel stop. This device will not allow you to go beyond the intended perimeter of timber sampling.
6. You should be careful near the upper and lower boundaries of the contour: it is better not to "reach" with a cutter, and then cut off a millimeter with a chisel. Rounded corners are finished with a knife.
   

   Important: before you start milling, you should practice on wooden blocks. Mistakes can be worth a damaged door leaf. Care must be taken to avoid injury.

7. After that, it remains to outline and drill the holes for the screws. The hinge is screwed into place, after which the wood is sampled in the same way to install the lock. The immersion depth of the cutter is selected in accordance with the dimensions of the lock.
