Master class “Mittens knitted on four knitting needles. Mittens knitting patterns and descriptions for beginners Mittens 4 knitting needles

Knitting is one of the most fascinating types of needlework. In addition, hand knitting is also very fashionable. Knitted items have risen to the peak of popularity due to the widespread interest in things made in the hand-made style. Therefore, many girls again took up knitting needles to create fashionable masterpieces with their own hands. Detailed instructions on how to knit mittens will help you master the skills of knitting this accessory and reveal the secrets of craftsmanship.

Selecting materials and tools

To make mittens you will need:

  • threads
  • set of 5 double needles
  • pin

To knit mittens, it is recommended to use thin or medium-thick yarn, natural wool or wool blend. Products made from these types of yarn are beautiful, warm, and comfortable to wear. Yarn consumption depends on the size of the hand, the volume of the chosen pattern, the length of the cuff, and the meter of the yarn itself. On average, a pair of mittens takes from 50 to 150 g. The choice of knitting needles depends on the thickness of the yarn: for knitting with thin threads it is recommended to use knitting needles No. 2, for knitting with threads of medium thickness - knitting needles No. 3.

Various patterns and knitting techniques can be used to knit mittens, but the most impressive look are:

  • braids and plaits
  • lumps
  • shadow patterns
  • relief patterns
  • jacquard patterns
  • motives
  • stripes

The selected pattern is placed on the back of each mitten or, if the pattern is flat, it can be knitted on both sides of the product. Mittens knitted with regular stockinette stitch can be additionally decorated with embroidery, applique, fringe, pompoms, buttons, knitted flowers, beads or rhinestones.

Features of knitting mittens with stocking needles

Beginning needlewomen, in order to understand the intricacies of knitting, are recommended to try knitting the simplest version of mittens for the first time. In the presented instructions we will knit mittens using knitting needles using the traditional knitting method - in the round. When performing it, all the loops of the future product are evenly distributed on 4 working knitting needles and closed in a circle. The junction of the circle should be marked by attaching a contrasting thread or pin. The fifth knitting needle is an auxiliary knitting needle, used for knitting loops and in the process of work replaces all the others in a circle. Knitting is done clockwise.

Knitting in a circular manner is carried out exclusively on the front side of the product and, accordingly, in the circle, which automatically eliminates the presence of edge loops. This type of knitting allows you to get a seamless product. A mark left in the form of a thread or a pin at the junction of the cast-on loops into a ring indicates both the end of the previous and the beginning of a new row.
Using stocking needles, you can knit mittens both from top to bottom and from bottom to top. The last method is the most common and much easier to implement. Having mastered it, you can quickly learn how to knit mittens and other, more complex methods.

The entire knitting process is divided into several stages:

  • loop calculation
  • performance cuff
  • knitting the bottom of the mitten
  • knitting the top of the mitten
  • toe design
  • thumb knitting

In order for the mittens to fit well on your hand, without squeezing it or dangling, you should accurately determine the size of the product.

How to calculate loops

To calculate the number of loops required for work, you should knit a sample using the pattern you like. To knit a pattern, cast on up to 30 stitches and knit the same number of rows. Lightly stretch the resulting sample with your fingers, measure the knitting density horizontally and vertically, and calculate its coefficient by dividing the calculated result by 10.
Then take measurements, measuring the circumference and length of the palm, the height of the thumb. The circumference of the palm is measured at its widest part using a tightly stretched measuring tape. Palm length is measured at several points from the wrist:

  • to the top of the thumb
  • to the top of the little finger
  • to the base of the thumb

The height of the thumb is measured from its base to the middle of the nail plate.

Attention! Knowing the knitting density coefficient and the measurements of the palm, it is easy to calculate how many loops you will need to cast on for the future product.

Loops are calculated using the formula: multiply the circumference of the palm by the horizontal knitting density coefficient.

In an example it looks like this: 20 x 1.9 = 38 loops, where

  • 20 – measurement of palm circumference in cm
  • 1.9 – density coefficient

The result obtained should be a multiple of 4. This will allow you to evenly distribute the cast-on stitches onto 4 working needles. If the result obtained is not divisible by four, it should be rounded up to the nearest multiple of four.
In an example, it looks like this: when calculating the loops, the result was 38. This number is not divisible by four, so it should be increased to the nearest multiple of four, in this case it is 40. This number of loops should be cast on the knitting needles.
Special tables that indicate all the necessary data, depending on the girth of the palm, will also help you determine the number of loops required for knitting a product.

Using the measurements taken, you can additionally construct a drawing of the mitten and focus on it during the knitting process.

Attention! Using a drawing is especially appropriate if the mittens are knitted for another person and there is no opportunity to try them on during the knitting process.

Knitting cuff

Considering the traditional way of knitting mittens - from the bottom up, you should start knitting the first mitten (in this case it will be the right one) from the cuff. To knit a cuff, cast on 40 stitches and distribute them evenly, 10 pieces at a time, onto 4 knitting needles.

Attention! Since the mitten being knitted is intended for the right hand, there will be loops on the 1st and 2nd knitting needles intended for knitting the inside of the hand. On the 3rd and 4th knitting needles there are loops intended for knitting the back of the hand. The loops cast on and distributed over 4 knitting needles should be closed into a ring by knitting the first four loops of the 1st knitting needle together with the end of the cast-on row in the second row. This technique will make the joint tighter. You should then mark the seam by pinning it or tying a contrasting thread to make it easier to identify the start and end of each row.

To ensure that the mitten fits well around the wrist and does not stretch during wear, its lower edge - the cuff - should be covered with an elastic band.

Attention! The most common cuff design options are 1×1 or 2×2 elastic. But other design options can also be used: 3×3 or 4×4 rib, strands or braids, cross rib, scalloped edge or stockinette stitch with the edge turned inside out.

The simplest option for decorating the cuff of a mitten is to knit a 2×2 elastic band. This pattern is a sequential alternation of 2 front and 2 purl loops. It can be used when knitting mittens for the first time.

After the required number of loops has been cast on and distributed on the knitting needles, and then closed into a ring, you should begin knitting a 2x2 elastic band. Having knitted the cuffs to a height of 6-10 cm (if desired, the cuffs can be knitted longer or shorter), you should proceed to the next stage of knitting - the lower part of the mitten. We use the main pattern for this.

Knitting the lower part of the main part of the mitten

For those who are just mastering the art of knitting mittens, it is recommended to choose a pattern as simple as possible for knitting the main part, for example, stockinette stitch. When making this pattern, all loops should be knitted exclusively from the top segment, that is, the thread is always in use.

The lower part of the mitten starts from the top edge of the cuff and reaches the base of the thumb. In order for the palm to fit comfortably inside the mitten, at the stage of transition of the cuff into the main part of the mitten, increments should be made - one knit stitch at the beginning of the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, as well as one knit stitch at the end of the 2nd and 4th knitting needles knitting needles The added loops should be pulled out from the twisted broaches. Next, knit the mitten with the main pattern in the round. A hole for the thumb should be made 5-7 cm from the top edge of the cuff. This knitting method is called “without wedge”. This means that the thumb part is made according to a simplified pattern.

Attention! While knitting, you should try on the mitten from time to time or attach it to the drawing for comparison.

Knitting the upper part of the main part of the mitten

Having reached the base of the thumb, you should leave a corresponding hole for it. You can do this using one of the following methods.

Continue knitting the main piece in the round, making the pattern in stockinette stitch. After 8-9 cm, when the upper edge of the main part reaches the tip of the little finger, you should proceed to knitting the toe, which ensures a beautiful fit of the mitten on the hand.

Knitting a toe

The toe of the mitten can be knitted using any of the following methods:

  • pointed
  • rounded
  • spiral

To obtain a pointed toe on a mitten, decrease stitches should be done as follows. Knit the first two loops located on the 1st needle together with a knit stitch, making a left bend. Knit the remaining nine stitches of the 1st needle in stockinette stitch. On the 2nd knitting needle, do the same thing, but in a mirror image: knit nine stitches in stockinette stitch, knit the last two together, making a knit stitch behind the front walls, thereby forming a slant to the right.

The loops located on the 3rd knitting needle should be knitted like the loops of the 1st knitting needle, namely: knit two loops together with stockinette stitch, forming a slant to the left, knit the remaining nine loops according to the pattern. The loops located on the 4th knitting needle should be knitted like the loops from the 2nd knitting needle: first, nine loops in stockinette stitch, leaving only the last 2, which should be knitted together in stockinette stitch behind the front walls, forming a slant to the right.

Attention! The decreases should be repeated every other row until there are six loops left on each of the knitting needles. In those rows where decreases and tilts were not performed, the outer loops on the knitting needles should be knitted according to the pattern. The remaining six loops on each knitting needle should continue to decrease, doing this in each row. Decrements should be made 4 rows in a row. As a result, only two loops will remain on each knitting needle. Tear off the working thread from the skein you are using, use a needle to pick up all the loose loops, pull them together, and then fasten them on the wrong side of the mittens.

To obtain a spiral rounding on the toe, you need to knit the first two loops on each needle together using stockinette stitch at the lower lobes. Repeat decreases in this manner on each row until only two stitches remain on all needles. Having torn the thread from the skein in use, pick up the loops using a needle, pull them together, and hide the excess ends on the wrong side.

Attention! Spiral and rounded methods of making toes on mittens will look good if the mittens are knitted exclusively with stockinette stitch, without using other patterns. If the mittens are knitted using openwork or a braid pattern, then before you start decreasing for the toe, you should switch to knitting in stockinette stitch, first knitting 1-2 rows, and then only starting to decrease the loops for the toe.

Knitting Thumb Details

To complete the thumb detail, you can use any of the presented options.

The right mitten is ready. The second, left mitten, is knitted in a mirror image.

Having mastered the technique of knitting mittens using these instructions, beginning needlewomen can also try their hand at knitting mittens with more complex patterns. By improving the skill of knitting mittens and enjoying the process, you can master other techniques: knitting mittens with a lining, with a regular wedge, with an Indian wedge, with a separate index finger, using shortened rows, top to bottom, cross knitting. Happy creativity!

In winter frosts, it is especially important to keep the child’s hands warm. Therefore, you will probably find the master class useful, how to knit double mittens (with lining), prepared by Vera Ponomarenko. In addition, Vera’s turned out to be very beautiful and elegant, you can see them in the photo. The description of the work is designed for the age of a child: 3-4 years, but using this principle you can also knit mittens of large sizes.

Double mittens (knitting)

Do you want to knit mittens for your child, but don’t know how? The master class on knitting children's double mittens will help you find the answer to your question. Use your imagination, and this is no longer just a part of everyday life in frosty weather, but also an excellent gift for your favorite holidays. After all, we have been taught since childhood: “The best is made with your own hands!”

  • Yarn: Moscow LAMA “Russian motif” (100 g / 300 m, yarn composition: 40% wool, 60% acrylic)
  • Marker: piece of contrasting thread – 12 cm
  • Needles: two sets of double needles 2.5 mm and 3 mm.

Description

To keep the mittens on the wrists and not slide down, which is especially important for children, knitting must begin with an elastic band. In this example, one of the popular options is used - k2, p2. And so that the product does not lose its presentation during subsequent wear, the elastic should be knitted with knitting needles of a smaller size than the main part is supposed to be knitted.

On stocking needles with a diameter of 2.5 mm, cast on 40 sts. Evenly distribute 10 sts on each of the four knitting needles and knit 2x2 rib for the next 50 rows. As the product begins to add row after row, it may seem that at the 20th row it is time to stop and move on to knitting the palm and thumb. But since the presented sample of mittens is double (with lining), this number of centimeters of elastic will fold in half.

So, after 50 rows, it was the turn of the stockinette stitch. At the same time, it is necessary to replace the knitting needles with a 3 mm diameter. Continue knitting another 8 rows. The thumb will begin in the 9th.

The methods for knitting the thumb of a mitten are varied. This master class describes the simplest of them. To do this, knit 4 knit stitches on the first knitting needle, insert a thread of a different color (marker) and knit the remaining 6 knit stitches on the knitting needle.

Return to the main color yarn, finish the current row with knit stitches, plus another 28 circular rows (total - 37 rubles from the rib).

In the next row, i.e. 38th, starting from the first needle, start decreasing along the edges. At the same time, on the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, slip the penultimate loop onto the right knitting needle. Knit the last loop and pull it through the removed one (i.e. 2 stitches along with a tilt to the right). But on the 2nd and 4th knitting needles the inclination should be to the left, i.e. Knit the first loop and pull through the second. Thus, decrease until there are two loops left on the knitting needles (total: 8 stitches). Cut the thread at a distance of 5 cm and tighten the remaining loops. The remaining piece of yarn will be needed later to fasten the outer and inner mittens together.

Return to marker. Using a knitting needle, pull the thread out of the fabric. Cast on the dropped stitches on the knitting needles. Total: 6 sts at the bottom and 7 sts at the top. On the bottom row, pick up one more side loop on each side. They must be knit crossed in the first row to avoid the appearance of holes in the fabric. In total, knitting the thumb is carried out on 15 loops for the next 17 rows.

The outer one is ready. It's time for the "lining". To do this, cast on 40 stitches along the bottom edge of the elastic so that the outer loops remain behind the work.

Work the next 8 rows in stockinette stitch. In the 9th row, knit 6 loops with a thread of a different color parallel to the thumb on the outer mitten. Return to main yarn. Continue working with knit stitches for the next 26 rows. In total, the elastic band should make 35 rows. Make reductions. Pull the last 8 loops together with thread, leaving a 5-centimeter tip.

Knitting the thumb of an inner mitten is no different from the method described earlier. The only difference will be the number of rows, which are half a centimeter less (15 rows in total).
In the end it turned out double mitten.

Using the previously left ends of the yarn, fasten both parts from the inside and turn the fabric inside out. This must be done so that the child does not suffer in the future when putting on and taking off gloves, because the lining will remain in place under any circumstance.
Perform the right mitten following the example of the left one.

The only exception would be the choice of knitting needles for thumb knitting. So, on the outside of the fabric, insert a marker at the beginning of the IV needle. The inner thumb, accordingly, will be located parallel to the outer one. The choice of knitting needle in this case will depend on the beginning of the set of loops along the edge of the elastic band.

Make a twisted lace. To do this, you need to cut the thread to the required length. Fold the piece in half. Secure one end with a heavy object, and start twisting the thread with your fingers on the other side. The longer you twist the piece, the tighter the lace will be. Next, fold it in half again, straightening it along its length. Tie one end into a knot to prevent deformation. Using a hook, pull the lace behind the front stitches at a height of 10 rows from the front stitch.

Decorate the ends with pom-poms.

The final step will be applique on the outer mitten. It could be a flower or a butterfly if the children's mittens are intended for girls.

A boy's pair of mittens will be decorated with a snowman or a bear. It all depends on the author’s imagination.

Happy creativity!

If you know how to hold knitting needles in your hands, then mastering the technique of knitting mittens will not be at all difficult. Just study this detailed master class with a description and believe in yourself. As knitters say: the eyes are afraid, but the hands do.

Master class on knitting mittens on 4 knitting needles:

First, measure your hand size and use the table to determine the number of loops.

Mittens can be plain, with multi-colored stripes, applique or jacquard. It all depends on your skill. To begin with, I suggest knitting the simplest mittens, and then adding various decorations.

For work we will need wool thread (70 g), 5 double needles No. 3.

Knitting density = 1.7 loops in 1 cm. Next, you need to measure the girth of the hand, but we will knit for a hand whose hand girth is 20 cm.

The product is knitted from top to bottom on five needles, as a result of which it will turn out without a seam. Calculation of the number of loops: 20 x 1.7 = 34 loops. Distribute 34 stitches onto 4 knitting needles. I suggest rounding up and casting on 36 loops, so we get 9 each.

To make the explanation easier, let's give each knitting needle a serial number. Closing the circle, we knit four loops of the 1st knitting needle together with the end of the yarn remaining on the 4th knitting needle from the set of loops, so that the circle closes tightly around the edge.

Let's start with the right part. We will assume that on the 1st and 2nd knitting needles there are loops of the lower part of the mitten, and on the 3rd and 4th knitting needles - the upper ones. We start the work with an elastic band, which we knit 1×1 (1 knit, 1 purl). The height of the elastic band or cuff is 7 cm.

The thumb will be knitted on the 1st needle, for the left - on the 2nd. To do this, knit the first loop on the 1st knitting needle with a thread of the main color. All other loops, except the last one, are knitted with colored thread. Then we return the loops connected with the colored thread to the 1st knitting needle and knit again with the main thread. We get a colored touch. This will be the hole for the thumb in the future. Next, we simply knit up to the little finger (about 8 cm).

Then we begin to decrease the loops on the toe of the mitten. On the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, at the beginning, we knit the first two loops together using the front stitch in the second way (at the back walls), having first turned over the 1st loop. On the 2nd and 4th knitting needles we knit two loops together at the end of the knitting needle using the first method (behind the front walls). So we decrease the loops through the circle until each knitting needle has half the number of loops (in our case, when the number of loops on each knitting needle is odd, we decrease the smaller part through the circle - 4 loops), then we decrease the loops in each circle (5 loops). At the same time, on the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, in those rows where we do not decrease the loops, we also turn the first loops over and knit them in the first way. When there are 2 loops on each knitting needle, tighten the loops and secure them on the wrong side.

Now let's start knitting the thumb. To do this, carefully pull the colored thread out of the thumb hole. Then we insert two knitting needles into the free loops, we get 7 loops on the lower knitting needle, 6 on the upper knitting needle. We begin to knit the finger, distributing the loops on 4 knitting needles: 4 loops on the first, 3 on the second and pull one loop from the side edge of the hole, on the 3rd and the 4th knitting needle will also have 4 loops (3+1 from the side edge of the hole). To make it more convenient, the end of the working thread can be lowered into the hole (on the wrong side of the product).

We continue to knit the finger in a circle until the middle of the nail, and then begin to decrease the loops in the same way as when knitting the toe of the mitten: on the 1st and 3rd knitting needles at the beginning, on the 2nd and 4th knitting needles at the end, but decreasing We do it in every row. When there is 1 loop left on each knitting needle, we tighten the loops and fasten them on the wrong side.

The left mitten is knitted similarly to the right one, but in a mirror image: we knit the hole for the finger on the 2nd knitting needle.

With the onset of frosty and cold days, you want to insulate yourself as much as possible: put on warm clothes, don’t forget about a hat and scarf, hide your palms in mittens or mittens, gloves. You can knit unusual mittens with your own hands; the patterns and descriptions of their manufacture are simple and accessible, so even inexperienced knitters can cope with this task.

With the onset of frosty and cold days, you want to insulate yourself as much as possible.

Knitting mittens for those craftswomen who have been holding knitting needles in their hands for a long time is a familiar and ordinary thing: most of them do such work mechanically, without thinking about the sequence of actions. For beginners in knitting, such work will seem a little difficult, but exciting and interesting. Schemes and descriptions of the process of how to knit a beautifully simple product will help you do the job correctly, efficiently and in an original way.

  1. In order for the mittens to fit perfectly on the palm, without squeezing your fingers or hand, you should start by determining the size. To do this, draw a brush onto the paper along the outer contour and calculate the size of the product, as well as how many loops will need to be cast on for a certain size of the product.
  2. Cast on 48 stitches on two knitting needles at the same time, then carefully remove one knitting needle and distribute the entire amount into 4 equal parts (12 loops each) onto different knitting needles. A marker is attached to the working loop so as not to subsequently lose the beginning of the circular row.
  3. Further knitting of the cuff with knitting needles is done with an elastic band, after which a few centimeters of stockinette stitch will fit.
  4. 8 loops from the first knitting needle are removed with a safety pin, and the same number of loops is cast on to continue working. Knit in satin stitch until the end of the little finger, after which they begin to decrease the loops evenly, the last 8 loops are knitted loop into loop.
  5. To the 8 previously removed loops, add the same number of additional ones and distribute them onto 4 knitting needles. The thumb is knitted from the collected quantity, the last pair of stitches is knitted together with the front one.

Knitting mittens for those craftswomen who have been holding knitting needles in their hands for a long time is a familiar and ordinary thing.

The instructions for making mittens for inexperienced needlewomen include making the product using stockinette stitch, since these are the simplest mittens, which can then be painted at your discretion.

Beautiful knitted mittens with a pattern

Products knitted with a beautiful pattern look original. Such mittens do not need to be further decorated, as they themselves look elegant and exclusive. Beautiful knitting of such a product is not difficult in itself; it is important to follow the step-by-step instructions.

  1. To start working, cast on 40 loops, distribute them evenly onto 4 knitting needles and close them in a circle.
  2. Next we knit according to the pattern, openwork leaves will appear. On row 41, 6 stitches are lowered onto a safety pin for the thumb hole and knitting continues, casting on five stitches for balance.
  3. Having knitted all the rows according to the pattern, close the work and proceed to knitting the thumb, distributing 12 loops onto 4 knitting needles. Knit 15 rows in stockinette stitch, then knit 2 loops simultaneously on each needle until the end.

The product for the second hand is knitted similarly, in a symmetrical reflection.

Knitted mittens with braids: step-by-step instructions

Warm and original mittens with a braid pattern can be knitted by following simple instructions and without deviating from the standard pattern. You can make this product from thick, coarse yarn, or you can make the product thin and light.

  1. Cast on 52 stitches on a pair of knitting needles and work with a double elastic band for 20 rows in the round. In the last row two loops are added.
  2. Starting from the 10th row, knit the finger gradually until 20 extra loops are formed. They are put on a pin and knitting continues according to the pattern.
  3. To knit a finger, knit the required length, then connect 1 and 2 together simultaneously using knit stitch, in the last row there are 2 knit stitches. At the end, tighten the remaining loops.

The right mitten is knitted in a symmetrical manner similar to the left one.

Knitted mittens with ornaments

You can make men's or women's mittens with an ornament with your own hands from any yarn, but it is advisable to use white or gray threads for the base. Men will also prefer a black base, diluted with gray ornaments.

The pattern can be made with any threads of a contrasting color.

  1. Cast on 48 stitches per pair of knitting needles, then distribute them onto 3 knitting needles (16 stitches each).
  2. Knit 4 rows with a double elastic band, then introduce a colored thread and knit a couple of rows. This alternation is repeated again. After which the cuff is ready.
  3. Knit four rows with a single-color thread using the stockinette stitch method and move on to the ornament.
  4. For decoration, the loops are redistributed in half and 24 loops are knitted according to the pattern. Having reached the second mark of the diagram, the number of loops begins to be reduced by 2 on both sides. This way all the loops are gradually closed.
  5. They return to knitting the fingers, which is carried out according to the standard pattern.

If you strictly follow the pattern of the ornament, the mittens will turn out cool and very creative.

Children's ideas for winter mittens

For adults and children's winter mittens, the idea of owl mittens is considered quite a fashionable modern trend. They can be made long or short, in the form of tunnels or solid, plain or two-color.

For such an accessory for a girl, you should prepare in advance not only knitting needles and yarn, but also beads for the owls, and jewelry that the little princess will prefer.

  1. 32 loops are cast on the knitting needles, which are subsequently distributed over 4 knitting needles.
  2. The first 10 rows are knitted with an elastic band using double loops, the 11th row is knitted in stockinette stitch.
  3. In the 12th row, add a pair of loops from broaches, the next rows up to 18 inclusive are performed in knitting.
  4. The bird is knitted from the 19th row: on the first two knitting needles, on the 3rd and 4th - 4 knits on 6 purls and 6 knits on 4 purls.
  5. 21st row: on 1 knitting needle all knit stitches, on 2 knitting needles slip 2 knit stitches, on a pin slip 6 thumb loops, on the third and fourth knitting needles - 4 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches, 4 knit stitches.
  6. From rows 22 to 24, the algorithm is repeated, but without removing the thumb loops.
  7. From 25 to 31 rows are knitted according to the following principle: knit on needles 1 and 2, knit 4 on needles 3 and 4, purl 2, knit 4.
  8. From rows 31 to 41, the first and second rows always have knit stitches, the third row has 4 purl stitches and 6 knit stitches, and the fourth row has 6 purl stitches and 4 knit stitches.

After the 38th row, the loops are decreased and 2 loops are knitted from each end at a time. The loops are reduced to 8 pieces, which are then tightened with a special needle. After finishing, the finger is knitted in the standard way. To complete the work, small beads are sewn onto the eyes for the birds.

Mittens with knitting patterns (video)

Funny mittens will delight lovers on Valentine's Day, and little children will wear them with pleasure. The master class on making such fun winter accessories for women and children includes other options for knitting attractive characters.

The cold and frosty days have already arrived. It's time to knit warm gloves and mittens. And if you have never knitted mittens, then you can easily learn using these clear instructions: How to knit mittens with knitting needles for beginners - all the nuances of knitting are explained step by step with photos. From constructing the pattern and calculating the set of loops, knitting the cuff and the main part of the mitten with and without a wedge for the thumb. And also how to tie a finger onto mittens and beautifully close the loops at its end.

According to this description, you can knit any mittens, including simple ones, in stockinette stitch, plain or striped, or from melange yarn. Or using patterns, such as braids or openwork inserts. The main thing is to learn the very principle of construction and the sequence of work.

So, let's begin!

Constructing a mitten pattern

The first thing we need to do before we start knitting mittens is to build a pattern. To do this, we trace the hand on a piece of paper and mark four main lines on the resulting outline: the transition line from the cuff to the main part of the mitten, the beginning of the thumb and the end of the little finger, as well as the length of the thumb.

Loop calculation

The next stage is knitting a control sample in order to calculate the number of loops and select the appropriate number of knitting needles. Read about how to correctly knit a control sample and calculate the knitting density.

Determine the knitting density from the sample and calculate how many loops you will need. Multiply the wrist circumference by your knitting density. Reduce the resulting value to a figure that can be divided by four without a remainder (since the mitten is knitted on four knitting needles).

Example: your knitting density is 2.5 loops in 1 cm, and the circumference of the hand is 19 cm. We get this value by measuring the hand above the thumb. We multiply 20 by 2.5 and get 50. Since 50 is not divisible by 4 without a remainder, we reduce this number to 48 (48:4 = 12). This means we will have 12 loops on each knitting needle.

How to knit mittens for beginners step by step

We start knitting with the cuff. It can be done with an elastic band, or with some kind of pattern, for example with braids, openwork stripes or patterns of several colors, for example jacquard or with removed loops. But since we are just learning how to knit mittens, we will make the cuff in the most common way - with an elastic band.

A set of loops on stocking needles for knitting a cuff

To ensure that the edge of the cuff does not squeeze the hand and is durable, the set must be done as freely as possible. To do this, several different techniques are used: casting on loops on double knitting needles (as in the photo), casting on larger needles, or casting on with double thread.

So, fold 2 knitting needles together and cast on the required number of stitches (in our case, 48). Carefully remove one knitting needle and knit the first row tightly with an elastic band. In this case, distribute the loops evenly onto 4 knitting needles (12 loops for each in our example). What's the best way to do this? Knit the first part of the loops with the first knitting needle, the next part with the second, the next part with the third and the remaining part with the fourth. Thus, all the loops are evenly distributed on 4 knitting needles, and the remaining free fifth is the working one.

At this stage, it is convenient to attach a marker to the beginning of the loops of the first knitting needle, so that in the future you do not have to look for the beginning of the circular row.

How to knit a mitten cuff with knitting needles

After the loops are cast on, evenly distributed on 4 knitting needles and closed in a circle, knitting is performed in the round. Since this is a description of knitting mittens for beginners, I recommend knitting the cuff with an elastic band 1 x 1 for 6 - 9 cm, and then work the next 6 cm in stockinette stitch to the line of the base of the thumb. And one more thing, the work must be done on the outside of circular knitting; sometimes beginners knit mittens with four knitting needles in the inner circle, but this is more difficult and inconvenient.

How to knit a thumb hole in a mitten

The width of the hole is determined in the following way: it is equal to the number of loops on one knitting needle minus four loops. In our case it is 12 minus 4 = 8 loops.

There are 2 main options - with or without knitting a wedge for the finger. But both of them are based on the fact that the required number of loops is transferred to an auxiliary knitting needle or pin; in addition, instead of them, loops are cast on for the jumper between the finger and the main part and put into work. The main part of the palm is knitted on these loops, and the thumb is knitted on the left loops and jumper loops.

How to close mitten loops with knitting needles

The loops are decreased along two lines - along the edges of the palm, giving a triangular shape to the end of the mitten. Decrements are made every other row until 8 stitches remain. They are connected with a knitted seam.

How to knit a thumb on a mitten

The thumb of the mitten should also be knitted on 4 knitting needles, after its main part is completed. Take a new thread, lower its end into the hole and knit in a circle with stockinette stitch until the middle of the nail. Then decrease the stitches and close them in the same way as the top of the mitten.

Using this step-by-step description of how to knit mittens for beginners, you can knit mittens of any size, both children's, women's and men's. The main thing is to take your measurements correctly and calculate the number of loops. For beginners, it is better to start by knitting mittens using stockinette stitch, without patterns. And to make them interesting, take melange or sectional yarn and a single color to match. And knit a plain cuff, and a multi-colored one for the main part. And having learned, you will be able to knit more complex patterns, for example, mittens with or relief patterns. Wishing you even stitches and beautiful accessories!
