How to choose a backpack?

The most recognizable attribute of a tourist or traveler anywhere in the world is, of course, a backpack. In addition to the identification function, this wonderful thing is able to accommodate all the necessary devices for hiking, walks and other adventures.

The choice of a backpack is not the most tricky thing at first glance, but those who have already felt an uncomfortable burden on themselves look at it with different eyes. If you choose a container for all things for a multi-day hike, then the reliability and comfort of the structure is very important. If you are walking around the city or running through the woods, then it's a good idea to have handy pockets for keys, phone and other little things. In general, as with any tourist equipment, the variety of shapes, sizes and tricky accessories for backpacks is large. Now let's take everything in order.

  • Backpack fit

Basic types

Soft

WITH The smallest backpack without rigid elements. As a rule, it has directly a container for carrying things and shoulder straps to wear behind the back. Everything else depends on the imagination of the developers. Their use is walks around the city, business trips, small outings. The main advantages: lightness, compactness, quick access to any little things and the ability to collapse it to pack, for example, in a travel bag. Cons, respectively, - small capacity and calculation only for small weights. Soft constructions also used for large hikes,until they figured out to make a frame and a waist belt. Although even now an inexpensive expeditionary backpack may not have a frame; it is worth buying one in our time only in view of the tough savings of money.

Frame or anatomical

Wasps the newest and most popular type of construction for tourism and travel. Such a backpack has a rigid or semi-rigid frame, which maintains the shape of the back of the backpack, regardless of its filling, and also distributes the load along the back. The belt plays an important role in such a system - most of the weight is transferred to it from the shoulders. The frame is stiffened by various materials. Depending on the design, it can be a light semi-rigid plate along the back, aluminum armor or irregularly shaped rods. All this diversity serves two purposes: back comfort and weight distribution.

Easel

V the past - the main type of backpacks for carrying large loads. The main element in it is a frame, mostly U-shaped, with shoulder straps. And already anything is hung from the frame itself: for example, the Sherpas in the Himalayas manage to tie huge barrels of provisions to the easel backpack. This design is successfully used in highly specialized areas, for example, in speleotourism, where narrow moisture-resistant trunks are suspended from the frame. Nowadays, some manufacturers have begun to revive the forgotten design and develop modern frames to which various bags can be hung. As a result, they get a backpack that looks like a regular frame.

Main characteristics

Volume

Volume - one of the few characteristics that is indicated on the backpack. Often this is the number after the name of the backpack, it measured in liters... For the city and short outings, as a rule, backpacks up to 30 liters are recommended. For weekend hikes or hiking, backpacks are chosen on average from 30 to 70 liters. Anything above 70 liters assumes multi-day hikes or expeditions, and they are called, respectively, "expeditionary" or "trekking". But these are all general guidelines; when choosing a displacement, you must take into account your personal needs.

An example from personal experience: My first trip to Altai, I don't really have my own equipment. Father's four-person tent, a cheap and very large sleeping bag, without a compression bag, a few warm jackets, etc. and all this, multiplied by two, because girl with me. As a result, the Nova Tour Tibet 100 backpack is packed to capacity, and even from the outside it weighs a lot of equipment.

About ten years have passed, we are packing up a backpack before going to the Caucasus. The set is about the same, only the tent is much smaller and lighter, the sleeping bag is modern, it compresses very well, instead of a large boiler, there is a compact burner, one warm fleece jacket with thermal underwear, etc. again, we go together. But this time, the new Deuter Aircontact 75 + 10 backpack has to be pulled from all sides so that the load does not dangle inside, and even nothing hangs outside.

Thus, determining the required volume:

  • evaluate what you pack in your backpack instead of choosing based on travel-specific displacement recommendations.
  • keep in mind that manufacturers do not quite accurately and in different ways measure the displacement, and especially hacky ones can generally do it by eye. Someone in the measurements includes all the pockets, someone writes the lengthening valve in the total figure; while others write the prefix (75 + 15 in a deuter backpack where +15 is the size of the extendable top flap). Thus, you will not be able to correctly match two backpacks from different manufacturers, but it will be much easier to understand the model range of one company.

So, after the first trip, I had thoughts about a hundred and forty liter (!) Backpack. But after many years I acquired a lot of modern compact and light equipment (and with experience I just stopped taking something with me). Now I am picking myself, in addition to a large cargo backpack, a second lightweight one, for those cases when we are walking together, with a volume of about 60 liters. As you can see, there is more than a twofold difference in volume, and the purpose has hardly changed.

If you are joining an organized group, then most likely some of the public equipment and provisions will be added to your personal belongings. In this case, before making the final choice of a backpack, be sure to coordinate this issue with the organizer.

Materials (edit)

All other characteristics indicated on labels or price tags will consist of the names of all kinds of suspension systems and materials. There is a generalized one on our blog, so we will not dwell on this now. Suffice it to say that the strength of the fabric and its weight are important, less often moisture resistance. The materials of the shoulder straps, waist belt and other parts adjacent to the body should be as comfortable and well ventilated as possible for you. And don't forget to check the quality of the fittings.

Suspension system

If we talk about suspension systems, then at most companies you will see their loudly speaking names, but often the principle will be slightly different. When choosing, you should pay attention to the possibility of adjustments - so you definitely will not miss the size. An important point is the adjustment of the distance between the waist belt and the shoulder straps, which allows the belt to be correctly positioned just above the thigh, on the protruding part. The straps take precedence over the S-shape, which prevents slipping off the shoulders. In addition to this, a chest strap is attached to the straps - it must also be adjustable in height and width and have a sewn-in rubber compensator that softens the pressure on the chest when breathing.

The weight

Backpack weight - also an important characteristic , but, for example, in an expedition backpack, a large weight is compensated for by a well-thought-out load distribution system, and a carrier that is too light should be a little alarming. Find out about the weight, but at this point you should not make the final choice because of the difference in a couple of tens of grams.

Lotions

We got acquainted with the main elements, now let's move on to other amenities that manufacturers come up with for us.

Rain cape- made of moisture-resistant materials, prevents the backpack itself from getting wet, as well as attachments, protects against dust and dirt. Usually the cape is brightly colored, which makes the backpack even more visible from afar. If it was not included in the set for the selected backpack, you can purchase it separately.

Additional pockets- can be found almost everywhere: on a waist belt (convenient for little things, accessible without removing a backpack), mesh sides (for water or long objects), on the front side (notepads cards and other little things, sometimes with a special organizer), on shoulder straps (for a phone, glasses or a navigator), on the top flap (both inside and outside, for essentials), you can also select an inner pocket, which is located in the main compartment, closer to the back (usually suitable for a flask of the drinking system, or can serve as a pocket for wet items).

Entrance to the main compartment in the classic version on top. Often the main container is divided into two parts, complementing the system with a lower entrance. A little less often they make an entrance on the front side, thus, the backpack opens completely, like a travel suitcase. Even less often, the entrances are from the sides (for example, the American Gregory Whitney 90) and even from the back (like a BASK BERG 60 or 100 backpack).

Equipment for hanging equipment- are located on any element of the backpack and perform various functions. Simple ties, for example to secure a rug or a tent. A lot of different in concept, but the same in purpose mounts for ice axes or sticks. There are backpacks with special fasteners for skis, snowboards and other equipment for ski tours. Or simply buckles reinforced with a strong seam, to which you can tie anything.

And many others, often just pleasant trifles, about the availability of which a good consultant in the store will tell you. For example, a rigid plastic semicircular insert on the top of the backpack harness, which, when fully loaded, gives free space between the back of the head and the backpack. Or small velcro straps at the ends of the lines, thanks to which the dangling ends can be folded. All these are trifles, but they can persuade you to choose one or another model.

Which backpacks are better?

It's up to you to decide whether it's better or worse, of course, but from myself I can advise the following:

The most advanced firms in the high price bracket : Deuter, Arc "teryx, Gregory, Osprey, Tatonka, Jack Wolfskin, The North Face, Lowe Alpine, Marmot, Vaude. These firms will satisfy the most fastidious and selective individuals and those who need maximum comfort and reliability; but their price is literally scares away novice travel enthusiasts.

Inexpensive backpacks: There are a lot of firms aimed at the lowest price category, for example, in our city the Ural Expedition packs are the most popular. The same cheap and, unfortunately, not very high-quality backpacks are produced by almost every company in the slightest degree connected with tourist equipment. All of them have one big plus - the price, and as for the rest - how lucky. It is impossible to be sure that such a bag with straps will not fall apart during the passage of a difficult pass.

Moving on to the choice

We have sorted out everything you need to know about a backpack, now we will formulate a short instruction on choosing.

  • Determine the purpose of the backpack, versatility in this case can cost you dearly, and either in monetary terms or in decent discomfort.
  • Try to collect other gear first, necessary for travel, in order to imagine how large a backpack is needed, and what specific things will have to be packed into it.
  • Having defined the category of backpacks, compare several models from different manufacturers.
  • If this is not an online store, then be sure to try on a backpack, and ask him to load something properly.
  • At the last stage find out more detailed features: firstly, it will help to make the final choice, and secondly, some little things can greatly facilitate the use of a backpack, which the owners do not always know about, even after walking more than one hundred mountain kilometers.

Backpack fit

It also happens that none of the duffel bags you choose wants to sit comfortably on your back. This may be due to incorrect adjustment of the harness and shoulder straps. And here is a small instruction on this topic:

  • Be sure to load your backpack, try to do it evenly, so that nothing dangles inside and does not outweigh in different directions.
  • Adjust the height of the shoulder straps(if possible) according to the recommended values for your height, or so that the center of the waist belt falls on the protruding part of the pelvic bones, and the fastening of the straps to the backpack are in the area of the middle of the shoulder blades.
  • Loosen all straps and webbing before putting on your backpack.
  • Tighten the belt first firm enough to carry most of the weight onto it. It is also not worth tightening too tightly, this can make breathing difficult and hinder movement.
  • Further, from bottom to top, evenly, tighten all other straps, so as to remove the free play, trying not to overtighten them unnecessarily.

The bottom line is simple - you should be comfortable. if something is wrong, repeat the procedure until the best result is achieved.

A little tip: under load, it is quite easy to loosen a regular strap, it is enough to raise the buckle from one end, creating an angle between it and the sling close to a straight line.

That's all, good luck with your choice, and most importantly, as many new trips as possible with a backpack on your back!

If earlier the backpack was popular among guys, now many girls change bags for this accessory, because it is known that bags can harm posture. Everyone now has a backpack, from a child to an office worker; it can be not only a kind of storage for things, but also a stylish addition to the image.

When choosing a model among the whole variety of backpacks, you need to focus on 7 main criteria:

  1. Durability and reliability. The service life and preservation of the content directly depends on the seams, fittings and material of the model;
  2. The size. For comfortable wearing of the model, shoulder straps, backrest and other details should fit snugly to the body, but in no case should press or constrain. For an everyday model, 15 liters of volume is enough, but for hiking, a volume of 50 liters or more is better;
  3. Waterproof. Now it is difficult to imagine life without electronic gadgets; models with water-repellent properties are better suited for reliable transportation;
  4. Application. You need to clearly understand what type of backpack you need, since, for example, a city backpack is poorly suited for hiking, and vice versa, you cannot go to the city with a hiking bag;
  5. Functionality and ergonomics. It is necessary to carefully study the interior of the model, to assess whether the proposed number of compartments and pockets will be sufficient;
  6. Price. There is no need to rush to buy the first model available to your budget. Compare several models and use the comparison method to choose the best option for you. Usually the price does not guarantee to contain all the best, and vice versa, cheap models may be exactly what you were looking for;
  7. Design. Each person has his own style, his own taste in clothes, and a harmoniously fitting backpack can complement and even complete your image.

The backpack is perfect for those who cannot imagine their life without movement. With it, you can move freely and comfortably, folding the necessary things inside. Studying, traveling, hiking, city walks, cycling - each event has its own type of backpack.

- 80-90 liters, for a woman you need to take a backpack for 60-70 liters. But this is not something that you have to carry 70-80 kg, because your backpack will also contain such voluminous, but light things as a sleeping bag.

The design of the backpack is of great importance. It has to be tough. In easel backpacks, rigidity is provided by a metal frame, to which a backpack bag is attached from the back. But this makes the backpack much heavier. Therefore, a frame backpack, the rigidity of which is provided by plastic inserts in the backs.

The shoulder straps and waist belt must be adjustable. Put on your backpack, adjust it to your figure. The wide waist belt is designed to transfer weight from the shoulders to the lower torso. It should be soft and wide and equipped with waist stabilizers so it doesn't put pressure on the body. S-shaped shoulder straps on the wrong side should have polyurethane foam inserts so that they do not cut into the shoulders. It is good if the system of fastening the straps is floating, which makes it possible to adjust it according to the height and features of the figure. The straps should have a chest strap for better fixation on the body.

The presence of additional pockets and pendants is welcomed, you can attach polyurethane "foams" to them, various little things that can be useful on a hike. The top flap of the backpack should be equipped with a zippered pocket - you can put matches, keys, documents in it. The backpack should have side ties that can also be used to attach rugs, thermoses, or other outdoor gear. Make sure the buckles are strong and strong enough.

A person cannot hold out on one dry ration on a hike. Hot full food will warm you in the cool before dawn and rejuvenate after a hard day in the evening. To make aromatic fish soup, nutritious porridge and strong tea, you will need a quality camping pot.

Tourist bowlers are divided according to the material of manufacture into titanium, steel and aluminum. Dishes need to be purchased only of high quality, because in nature you cannot replace it with anything. If you are traveling with a large family or a group of friends, you need to buy a set of pots to cook several dishes at the same time. At least two vessels will be needed at least for the first or second course and for compote or tea.

Steel bowlers are lightweight and durable, and their price won't scare you off either. Aluminum and titanium are considered more practical, but they also cost an order of magnitude more. Pots also differ in the way they are produced. They are stamped, riveted and welded. Riveted dishes can leak in difficult hiking conditions, so it's better to get another one.

Choose the shape of the bowler hat that is convenient for you. Some tourists have adapted to putting low, slightly flattened pots in their backpacks, while others find it comfortable to wear high ones. Without a car, it is better to take several small or medium-sized pots, because no one wants to carry one huge and heavy kettle. For a company of 3-4 people, two vessels of 2.5-3 liters will be enough. 6-7 tourists on a hike are able to eat 5-6 liters of food.

There are also 10 liters, but you should not take such a container in the expectation that you will warm up food. In nature, cooked food spoils very quickly, so it is better to cook fresh food so that health problems do not spoil your trip.

The army version of the marching bowler hat has an oval shape. They are easy to carry, but they are much more difficult to wash. Take a closer look at the model that has a skillet lid. It is convenient to fry eggs or fresh fish on it. There are universal transformer bowlers. They look like tubes and contain a whole set of necessary utensils: a frying pan, a pot, pots and cups.

When hiking, a container with a non-stick coating is very convenient. It is easy to clean and easier to cook in such a pot. Consider purchasing a metal tripod so you don't have to look for a set of sturdy branches every time to position the pot over the fire. There are even two-seat tripods, they will help you cook two dishes at the same time.
