Calculate weight from height. How to determine your normal weight by height. Ideal weight for age

It is known that in the USSR, the healthy weight for a woman was calculated according to the simplest formula, growth minus one hundred. According to her, Baba Klava from the bench at the entrance was declared a woman with an ideal figure. Later, nutritionists slightly changed the formula - "height minus one hundred and ten", and for ballerinas the formula "height minus one hundred and twenty" was always used. If such generalized data does not suit you, read on - we have collected the most interesting, relevant and reflecting the reality of the formula.

Ideal weight calculator

Classification of body types according to Soloviev:

  1. Asthenic type: less than 18 cm in men, less than 15 cm in women.
  2. Normosthenic type: 18-20 cm in men, 15-17 in women.
  3. Hypersthenic type: more than 20 cm in men, more than 17 cm in women.

Cooper's formula

Ideal weight for a woman (kg): (height (cm) x 3.5: 2.54 - 108) x 0.453.
Ideal weight for a man (kg): (height (cm) x 4.0: 2.54 - 128) x 0.453.

Lorentz formula

Ideal weight = (height (cm) - 100) - (height (cm) - 150) / 2

For our heroine, the ideal weight will be 25 kg. Shta?

Kutla's formula (body mass index)

The body mass index is designed to measure overweight and obesity. BMI is familiar to many.

BMI = weight (kg): (height (m)) 2

BMI below 19 - underweight.

  • Ages 19-24 - BMI should be between 19 and 24;
  • at the age of 25-34 - BMI should be from 19 to 25;
  • at the age of 35-44 - BMI should be from 19 to 26;
  • at the age of 45-54 - BMI should be from 19 to 27;
  • at the age of 55-64 - BMI should be from 19 to 28;
  • over the age of 65 - BMI should be between 19 and 29.

Calculation example:

weight - 50 kg.

height - 1.59 m

BMI = 50 / (1.59 * 1.59) = 19.77 (normal BMI)

Fixed weight-growth factor

The calculation is based on a fixed coefficient (weight in grams is divided by height in centimeters). The table below is for women between the ages of 15 and 50.

Ideal Weight Formula: (height in cm * coefficient) / 1000

Brock's formula

It was this formula, proposed by the French physician Brock over a hundred years ago, that was used in vulgar calculations. Broca's formula takes into account the physique: asthenic (lean), normosthenic (normal) and hypersthenic (stocky).

Ideal Weight Formula:

  • under 40: growth -110
  • after 40 years: growth - 100

Asthenics subtract 10%, and hypersthenics add 10%.

So, our calculations:

age - 24 years

height - 159 cm

physique - hypersthenic.

Ideal weight = 53.9 kg.

Brock-Brugsch formula

This is Brock's modified formula for people with non-standard height: less than 155 cm and more than 170 cm.

  • Less than 165 cm: ideal weight = height - 100
  • 165-175 cm: ideal weight = height - 105
  • Over 175 cm: ideal weight = height - 110.

Our exemplary woman with her weight of 50 kg, a height of 159 cm and an age of 24 years is far from the maximum. And this is good.

Many consider this particular table to be the most complete and balanced approach to determining the presence of excess weight.

Borngardt Index (1886)

It also uses data on the circumference of the chest.

Ideal weight = height * bust / 240

Robinson's Formula (1983)

It is believed that it is incorrect for men.

For women (height in inches):

49 + 1.7 * (height - 60)

For men (height in inches):

52 + 1.9 * (height - 60)

Miller's Formula (1983)

For women (height in inches):

Ideal weight = 53.1 + 1.36 * (height - 60)

For men (height in inches):

Ideal weight = 56.2 + 1.41 * (height - 60)

Monnerot-Dumine Formula

This formula takes into account body type, bone volume, muscle mass.

Ideal weight = height - 100 + (4 * wrist)) / 2

Formula Kreff

This formula takes into account age and body type.

Ideal weight = (height - 100 + (age / 10)) * 0.9 * coefficient

Odds:

  • Wrist less than 15 cm - coefficient 0.9
  • Wrist 15-17 cm - factor 1
  • Wrist more than 17 cm - coefficient 1.1.

Formula of Mohammed (2010)

Ideal weight = height * height * 0.00225

According to it, the ideal weight of our heroine should be 56.88 (which is a bit too much).

Nagler's formula

The slightly too general Nagler formula does not take into account your age and current weight at all - only height and gender.

For women (attention: height in inches!):

Ideal weight = 45.3 + 2.27 * (height - 60)

For men (attention: height in inches!):

Formula Humvee (1964)

Online weight calculators on the Internet usually use exactly this:

Formula for women (height in inches):

Ideal weight = 45.5 +2.2 * (height - 60)

Formula for men (height in inches):

Ideal weight = 48 + 2.7 * (height - 60)

Devin's Formula (1974)

Dr. Devin invented it to correctly calculate the dosage of medicines. It got into the mass consciousness as an ideal weight calculator later and enjoyed great success. True, there are also disadvantages: for women of small stature, the weight is usually very small.

For women (height in inches):

Ideal weight = 45.5 + 2.3 * (height - 60)

For men (height in inches):

Ideal weight = 50 + 2.3 * (height - 60)

Before losing weight, a literate person must make sure that he really needs it and that the problem is not far-fetched. And for this you need to know how to calculate excess weight. This will help determine exactly how many kilograms you need to lose in order to achieve the ideal parameters for your gender, height and age. The only problem is that there are a huge number of calculation formulas, and which one is the most accurate, no one can say for sure. Scientists argue that none pretend to be the best: each has flaws.

Classical Quetelet formula

The Quetelet formula is a generally accepted method for calculating excess weight of a person all over the world. It is approved and recommended by such a reputable organization as WHO. This is why most people use it. Allows you to find BMI - body mass index (in the West it is an abbreviation BMI - Body Mass Index).

Formula for calculation: I = M / H 2, where:

  • I - body mass index;
  • M - weight in kilograms at the moment;
  • H - height in meters at the moment.
  • M = 74;
  • H = 1.6;
  • we calculate the square of growth: 1.6x1.6 = 2.56;
  • it turns out I = 74: 2.56 = 28.91.

Note. Hereinafter, throughout the text, all examples of calculations will be given based on these data: our conditional man weighs 74 kg with a height of 1 m 60 cm.Other parameters (age, gender, physique, wrist volume) will vary. So it is more convenient at the end to compare the results and draw a conclusion about the "accuracy" of the proposed formulas and methods.

According to the official WHO table, the BMI rate ranges from 18.5-24.9 (inclusive). Excess weight is considered a corridor of 25-29.9, where the figure obtained in our calculation example (28.91) fell. Indicators starting at 30 refer to obesity.

Despite the fact that the BMI formula is recognized by the WHO itself, it is often criticized because it is not accurate. First, Quetelet (a Belgian statistician and sociologist) developed it already in 1869. It is simply outdated. Secondly, it does not take into account the age and constitution of the human body, which means that it cannot be recognized as an ideal calculation.

WHO recognizes the imperfection of this approach, but is in no hurry to abandon it. They adjusted their normal BMI score for age and gender:

If the BMI is higher than the indicators given in the table, this indicates the presence of overweight.

Tables

Those who are not friendly with math and do not like calculations can determine excess weight in other ways. Firstly, for this it is enough to find online calculators, enter your data in special windows, press the "calculate" button and get a ready answer. Secondly, you can find tables of correspondence between body weight and parameters such as gender, height or age.

Height and weight table

Example. Our conventional little man with a height of 160 cm and a body weight of 74 kg falls into the category of those who need to get rid of extra pounds. If this is a woman, she will have to lose at least 18 kg (her optimal parameters are 50-56 kg). If a man, then by 14 kg (for him the ideal corridor is indicated as 55-60 kg).

Height and age table

Example. If our conventional male man is 20 years old, then he needs to lose 11 kg; and if 60 - then only 6.

Excess weight calculation table depending on physique

According to their physique, people are divided into 3 types, and the parameters of ideal and excess weight may also depend on this. Wrist volume will help determine who you are:

Asthenics:

  • the neck is long, thin;
  • narrow shoulders;
  • the chest is flat, narrow;
  • limbs are long;
  • the face is elongated;
  • thin nose;
  • muscles are weak;
  • the tendency to overweight is minimal.

In normostenics:

  • slender legs;
  • the waist is thin;
  • the figure is harmonious;
  • average growth.

In hypersthenics:

  • bones are heavy and wide;
  • the chest is voluminous and short;
  • broad shoulders;
  • shortened limbs;
  • growth is below average;
  • the tendency to be overweight is high.

After that, you can determine if there is excess weight using the tables:

For men

For women

If you, with your body type, did not fit into the corridor of ideal body weight, then there is still a problem of excess weight. How important this is can be seen on the example of our conventional little man. If this is a hypersthenic woman, she will have to lose weight by at least 13 kg, if she is normostenic, then by 18, and if she is asthenic, then by all 23. Agree: the difference is significant.

Such tables are convenient in that they do not require complex mathematical calculations, in which it is easy to make mistakes.

Brock's method

Paul Brock (French surgeon, anatomist, ethnographer, anthropologist) in the 19th century proposed a special formula for calculating excess weight. Today, in terms of its popularity, it is only slightly inferior to the Quetelet method. It is based on the body type, which was already mentioned above.

  • H - 100 (if H< 165 см);
  • H - 105 (if H = 166-175 cm);
  • H - 110 (if H> 175 cm).

After that, to calculate excess weight, we use our body type:

  • asthenics reduce Broca's index by 10% and get their ideal body weight;
  • hypersthenics increase it by 10%;
  • normostenics leave the result unchanged.

Calculation example. If our conditional man:

  • asthenic: 160-100-10% = 54; then he will have to lose 20 kg;
  • hypersthenic: 160–100 + 10% = 66; then he has an excess of 8 kg;
  • normostenic: 160-100 = 60; then he needs to lose weight by 14 kg.

Brock's method does not work for athletes, pregnant women, and children.

other methods

Many scientists have tried to develop a method by which one could calculate the ideal weight and determine the amount of extra pounds. We will give as an example only the most famous ones.

Lorenz

Formula from the last century from the Danish physicist Hendrik Anton Lorenz. To calculate excess weight, you must first determine the ideal one.

Extended Lorentz formula: H (height in centimeters) –100– (H (in centimeters) –150): 2.

Example: 160–100– (160–150): 2 = 55.

Short: H (in centimeters): 2–25.

Example: 160: 2–25 = 55.

Now for our conventional little man, you can calculate how much excess weight is in him: 74–55 = 19 kg.

Borngarth

  • V = 75;
  • 160 x 75: 240 = 50.

Conclusion: found 20 extra pounds.

Mohamed

Example: 160 2 x 0.00225 = 57.6.

Conclusion: you need to lose 16.4 extra pounds.

Mohamed's technique was developed in 2010. Many scientists consider it not only the most innovative, but also one of the best.

Breitman

For example: 160 x 0.7-50 = 62.

Conclusion: in excess of 12 kg.

Monnerot Dumine

For example:

  • V wrists = 17 cm;
  • (160-100 + (4 x 17)): 2 = 64.

Conclusion: you need to get rid of 10 kg.

Brock-Brooksht

  • for a woman: H (in centimeters) –100– (H (in centimeters) –100): 10;
  • for a man: H (in centimeters) –100– (H (in centimeters) –100): 20.

Calculation example:

For women: 160–100– (160–100): 10 = 54.

Conclusion: we are losing weight by 20 kg.

For men: 160–100– (160–100): 20 = 57.

Conclusion: we are losing weight by 17 kg.

Kreff

Odds:

  • 0.9 at V wrist< 15 см;
  • 1 at V wrists = 15-17 cm;
  • 1.1 with V wrists> 17 cm.

Calculation example:

  • V wrists = 17 cm;
  • age = 45 years;
  • (160-100 + (45:10)) x 0.9 x 1 = 58.05.

Conclusion: we are losing weight by 15.95 kg.

Davenport

Calculation example:

  • we convert body weight into grams: M = 74 kg = 74,000 g;
  • 74,000: 160 2 = 2.89 (there is excess weight if this indicator exceeds 3).

Conclusion: the parameters are close to the critical point.

Potton

Ideal weight formula for men: H (in centimeters) –100 – H (in centimeters): 200.

Example: 160-100-160: 200 = 59.2.

Conclusion: you have to lose 14.8 kg.

Formula for women: H (in centimeters) –100 – H (in centimeters): 100.

Example: 160-100-160: 100 = 58.4.

Conclusion: women will have to get rid of 15.6 kg.

Korovin

  • the thickness of the skin fold near the third rib;
  • the thickness of the skin fold at the level of the navel.
  • if the thickness of the skin fold near the third rib is more than 1.5 cm, this is a sign of excess weight;
  • if the thickness of the skin fold at the level of the navel is more than 2 cm, this also indicates the presence of extra pounds.

Devin

In 1974, Dr. Devin developed a formula that was designed to correctly calculate the required dosage of drugs for a patient. But over time, it gained widespread popularity and began to be used to determine the ideal body weight. By the way, most online calculators work on its basis.

Formula for men: 50 + 2.3 x (H (inches) –60).

  • 50 + 2.3 x (62.99-60) = 57.

Conclusion: you need to lose weight by 17 kg.

Formula for women: 45.5 + 2.3 x (H (inches) –60).

Calculation example:

  • we translate height in inches: H = 160 cm = 62.99 inches;
  • 45.5 + 2.3 x (62.99-60) = 52.

Conclusion: you need to lose 22 kg.

Robinson

This is an improved Devin formula that many believe provides a more accurate result.

Formula for men: 52 + 1.9 x (H (inches) –60).

Calculation example: 52 + 1.9 x (62.99–60) = 58.

Conclusion: we remove 16 extra pounds.

Formula for women: 49 + 1.7 x (H (inches) –60).

Calculation example: 49 + 1.7 x (62.99–60) = 54.

Conclusion: gaining 20 extra pounds.

Tatogne

Formula: H (in centimeters) - (100+ (H (in centimeters) –100): 20).

Calculation example: 160– (100+ (160–100): 20) = 57.

Conclusion: we are losing weight by 17 kg.

For reference: Jan Taton is a Polish researcher who has been dealing with the problem of overweight throughout his life. Developed my own diet.

Noarden

Calculation example: 160 x 420: 1000 = 67.2.

Conclusion: the ballast is 6.8 kg.

Cooper

Formula for men: 0.713 x H (in centimeters) –58.

Calculation example: 0.713 x 160–58 = 56.

Conclusion: in excess of 18 kg.

Formula for women: 0.624 x H (in centimeters) –48.9.

Calculation example: 0.624 x 160–48.9 = 51.

Conclusion: 23 overweight.

Gabbs

Calculation example: (160-150) x 4: 5 + 55 = 63.

Otto

Formula for men: Broca's index - (Broca's index – 52) x 1: 5.

Calculation example: 60– (60–52) x 1: 5 = 58.

Conclusion: you need to minus 16 kg.

For women: Broca's index - (Broca's index – 52) x 2: 5.

Calculation example: 60– (60–52) x 2: 5 = 57.

Conclusion: minus 17 kg.

Ducan

If you need to calculate excess weight according to Dukan, for (you can familiarize yourself with it) it is extremely important, just find an online calculator on numerous sites dedicated to this method of losing weight. It takes into account:

  • age;
  • body type;
  • height;
  • muscle mass.

If we analyze the data obtained in the course of calculations using different formulas, the spread is quite large. This proves once again that the ideal technique has not yet been developed.

Bonus for men: John McCallum's technique

John Dennis McCallum is a well-known American sports columnist and writer of the mid-20th century. In his bestseller "The Key to Success", he offers a separate formula, according to which young men (aged 18 to 35) can not so much calculate their excess weight as correct body proportions. His technique is based on the circumference of the wrist:

  • wrist circumference x 6.5 = chest circumference (OG);
  • 85% exhaust gas = pelvic volume;
  • 70% exhaust gas = waist;
  • 53% exhaust gas = thighs;
  • 37% exhaust gas = neck;
  • 36% RH = biceps;
  • 34% exhaust gas = drumstick;
  • 29% exhaust gas = forearms.

The McCallum technique is also called the bodybuilder's formula. Men for whom it is important not only to lose weight and build muscle mass, but also to properly distribute it throughout the body so that it is embossed and beautiful, these calculations are a real find.

Now all these formulas are used only at home and are recommended for those who are overweight does not exceed 10 kg. In other cases, experts recommend contacting them with this problem. Since 2000, a new measurement method has been tested and applied in clinics as an alternative to BMI. It was called the Body Volume Index (BVI). It is more accurate as it is the result of a 3D scan.

If the scales are broken at home, and a diet or sports regimen requires you to monitor your weight, you can figure out how to find out your weight without weights by making an approximate calculation taking into account age and height. You should not expect absolute accuracy in this calculation, but it is quite possible to calculate an approximate figure : This option is suitable, for example, for women after childbirth.

How to calculate the rate of weight

People have optimal body weight at the age of 18 years. We get better over the years, and this process is quite normal. To understand if the weight is normal, you need to calculate the optimal body weight taking into account other parameters.

In an effort to say goodbye to extra pounds, it is important to correctly calculate the weight rate, and not be equal to girls of model appearance. Each person has his own body structure, so the mass must be calculated individually. The most common way is to determine this parameter from the ratio of the height and age of a person.

For this, the following weight calculation formula is used: 50 + 0.75 (P - 150) + (B - 20): 4 = body mass index, where P is height and B is age.

The option of how to find out your optimal weight without weights is not suitable for nursing mothers, pregnant women, athletes, people under 18 and over 65 years old. For them, fluctuations in weight are normal. There are tables by which you can find out the optimal amount of kilograms for women and men of any age.

How to determine weight without weights

To find out the weight without weights at home, you can use Brock's formula: men subtract the number 100 from their height in centimeters, women - 110, and the difference is multiplied by 1.15. The result is the average weight that will be optimal for you. Other methods to calculate your weight require a tape measure, a bathtub, and a little knowledge of physics.

On the wrist

There is a relationship between weight loss and limb size. Their volume immediately decreases with decreasing weight, so you can find out and determine the weight by the wrist. To do this, try wrapping your thumb and forefinger around it. If they close, you are an asthenic - a person with a normal slender figure. In this case, the number of kilograms can be calculated using this method: calculate 10% of the height in centimeters and subtract the resulting number from the last two digits of the growth parameter.

If the fingers on your wrist do not close, you are a hypersthenic - obese person. You can measure and find out the approximate number of kilograms as follows: calculate 10% from the height in centimeters, add the resulting number to the last two digits.

By waist

If you are interested in how to weigh yourself without weights, try to find out the weight by the waist volume: you only need a regular measuring tape. She needs to measure her waist at a distance of about two centimeters above the navel, then subtract 5 from this figure. The resulting indicator is the approximate body weight in kilograms.

“My weight is far from ideal” - every time many women get upset when they step on the scales. But what is meant by ideal weight? What formulas should be used to calculate it? And how does this indicator change with age?

In the arsenal of overweight fighters there are many different formulas and methods for calculating body weight parameters. But to be completely honest, our weight is an individual concept and depends not only on the characteristics of each individual person (age, height, bone thickness, etc.), but also on the state of the body at a certain moment. Therefore, the so-called "weight" ideal does not exist.

It is customary for doctors around the world to use the classification by body mass index (BMI), which allows you to assess whether weight is a threat to human health. BMI is calculated using the Cuetle formula: a person's weight in kilograms is divided by the height in meters squared. Then the result is compared with the values in the table. The World Health Organization considers the ideal body mass index to be in the 18.5-24.99 range. Some experts interpret the interval of 18-20 as insufficient, but safe for health.

It is clear that, according to this calculation, the normal weight of a person has a fairly wide range of permissible values. For example, with a height of 170 cm, the weight norm can be from 54 to 72 kg, if we take the BMI from 18.5 to 24.99 for the norm. Some studies say that the ideal BMI is 22, and scientists from the American Cancer Society consider the most preferred BMI in the range of 21.3-22.1 for women and 21.9-22.4 for men.

Other methods can be used to calculate the normal weight of a person.

So, the ideal weight = (height in cm - 100) - (height in cm - 150) / 2

For example:

the ideal weight of a woman with a height of 170 cm is

(170-100) - (170-150) / 2 = 70-10 = 60 kg

You can arrive at the same value with a simpler calculation method: subtract 110 from the height in centimeters. For example, if your height is 165 cm, then the ideal weight for you is 55 kg (165 - 110).

Brokk has a similar formula, only not 110, but 100 are subtracted from height. Perhaps that is why it is recommended to be used only for men to calculate the ideal weight.

To take into account age characteristics from the obtained Broca's index, it is necessary to subtract about 10% for people under the age of 30, and for people over 50, add about 5%.

These formulas are not very accurate, because they were developed a very long time ago and do not take into account some parameters. Improved formulas are used on our website, by clicking on the link you can calculate the ideal weight values automatically, according to four different formulas.

You can also find out the optimal weight taking into account age characteristics from the table.

Having calculated, or having learned from the table your normal weight, do not rush to throw all your strength into achieving it. Indeed, in addition to the value expressed in kilograms, it is necessary to pay attention to the percentage of body fat. Sometimes a lot of weight is not caused by adipose tissue, but by muscle tissue. In these cases, we can talk about the ideal weight even if the BMI is outside the "normal" range.

It is unlikely that you can measure the percentage of body fat "by eye", without the help of special devices and scales with a given program. Therefore, modern nutritionists advise measuring deviations from the "fat" norm by the waist circumference, since excess fat in this area carries health risks. So, for women, the waist should be no more than 88 cm, and for men - 102 cm.

If you have special devices that can calculate body fat, then the normal fat content is 10-20% for men and about 25-29% for women. With overweight, a man's body contains about 25% fat, a woman's 30-35%. And with obesity in men, the weight of fat exceeds 30%, and in women - 35%.

Lack of fat also has a bad effect: less than 15% in women leads to disruptions in the normal functioning of the body.

Many people like to drink food. Thin people can afford it, but overweight people cannot. They need to drink before meals or some time after. You can only drink dry food: pies, crackers, sandwiches, cookies. But fruits and berries should not be washed down.
