Tablecloth for home - beautiful DIY decor! MK. Diy tablecloths on tables of different shapes

If the hostess of the New Year's Eve is really getting down to business, then she will take care of everything related to the holiday. And last but not least, he will think about the New Year's tablecloth. You just need to set aside time for needlework and have a desire, and you can sew such a festive tablecloth with your own hands. How to choose a material for a tablecloth was described in detail in the article "How to choose a fabric for sewing a tablecloth for a New Year's table." Now let's take a look at how tablecloths are sewn on rectangular and square tables.

Rectangular table.

Your main holiday table needs to be measured first. We take measurements for the tablecloth: the length of the table top and the width. A festive tablecloth must necessarily have an overhang or borders, so that it not only slightly covers the tabletop, but also hangs down on the sides. The curbs are supposed to be of such length that they cover the legs of the table up to half. Some tablecloths are made to the floor, but then you need to sew a special overhang.

To calculate and cut the material, we add the estimated length of the curbs to our tabletop measurements. But it is even better to use a different material for the border with Christmas symbols or New Year's motives. Applique patterns, for example, a Christmas wreath, spruce branches or Christmas tree decorations, will also look great on the borders. If you are using light-colored material, then you can embroider, and to make it happen faster, embroider as little as possible. To do this, place on the border simple snowflakes of six stitches of different lengths with lurex thread or five-pointed stars of five stitches, for which you need to choose threads with a persistent color so that color spots do not turn out after washing.

An example of cutting is shown in Figure 1.

We start cutting from the tabletop itself. We add 2 cm to the contours of the part at the seams, taking into account the slight shrinkage of the natural material. Next, we cut out the stripes for the border. To get the desired length, add the curb hanging depth multiplied by two to the dimensions of each side of the rectangle. A double layer of fabric on the curb will weigh down the edges of the tablecloth and help to tighten it on the tabletop. We also leave seam allowances. In Figure 1, the fold in the middle of the border is indicated by a dashed line.

Before sewing on the edging of the tablecloth, bend each of the four borders in half and iron to maintain this shape. Then, unfold the fold, attach the curb fabric to the tabletop fabric “face to face” and sew 4-5 cm before the corners, fold the ironed fold and repeat from the wrong side.

The corners on the borders of the tablecloth can be stitched in two ways: with an overlap and with a diagonal stitch. Both methods are shown in Figure 2. When overlapping, one of the borders is inserted inside the other, which closes it. With a diagonal stitching in the corners, the corner ends of the border are folded with the front side, the ends to be sewn are folded diagonally, a triangle is obtained, it is better to iron them so that the subsequent diagonal seam is even. This is done from both the front and the seamy side of the tablecloth. Now you can complete the remaining 4-5 cm from the edges of the curb, closing the junction of the curbs from the face and the wrong side. The tablecloth is ready.

These are not all suggestions for making New Year's tablecloths with your own hands. Read the sequel: “How to sew a tablecloth for a square or rectangular New Year's table. Part 2 ", and" How to sew a tablecloth for a round New Year's table "Part 1 and Part 2.

The fabric for tablecloths must be strong, durable and easy to wash. The choice of the shape and style of the tablecloth depends on its purpose. Long tablecloths are used for special occasions, and for kitchen and dining tables, the length of the tablecloth should not be lower than the seats of the surrounding chairs.

Depending on the purpose, the edges of the tablecloth are possible. To calculate the fabric consumption, you need to carefully measure the table. When making a large tablecloth, do not sew individual pieces of fabric so that the seam is visible to everyone on the table. Better to place one piece of fabric in the middle and sew additional cuts along the sides to achieve the desired width. Join individual panels with a false seam.

Taking measurements for the tablecloth

For any tablecloth, you must first of all know the dimensions of the table surface and the distance from top to bottom from the surface to the edge of the tablecloth (height). To determine the height of a tablecloth designed for a kitchen or dining table, measure the distance from the edge of the table surface to the level of the chairs' seats. To make a long decorative tablecloth to cover a small dressing table, measure from the edge of the surface to the floor. To cut out a round tablecloth designed for a round table, see the instructions below, steps 1-3.

To cut a square tablecloth for a round table, measure the diameter of the table (AB) and add twice the height (EF) plus 2.5 cm of hem allowance. The size is the same for both sides of the tablecloth. For a rectangular tablecloth on an oval table, measure the length of the table, add twice the height plus 2.5 cm for the hem. Then measure the width of the table. For an oval tablecloth on an oval table, make a template out of paper that matches the table surface, place it on the fabric, pin it with pins, add around the height (EF) plus 1 cm for the hem - and you can cut it.

For a square tablecloth on a square table or a rectangular tablecloth on a rectangular table, measure the table width (CD), add double the height (EF) plus 2.5 cm for the hem. Measure table length (AB), add double the height (EF) plus 2.5 cm (2.5 cm) hem allowance.

The round tablecloth should hang at the same height on all sides of the table. Make a template with one curved side and use it for the cut. To do this, you need a marker, a piece of twine and a basic sewing kit. Make a compass by tying one end of the string to a marker, securing the other end with a knot, and pinning it to the paper with a pin. Adjust the length of the cord according to the radius of the tablecloth.

1. Folding the fabric

Cut out a square from the fabric with sides equal to the diameter of the tablecloth, that is, the diameter of the table plus 2 hanging heights. Fold the fabric in four, right side in.

Without a doubt, a beautiful neat tablecloth for the kitchen is a pleasant component of any gatherings, helping the hostess to teach her culinary skills to both households and guests. It is important to choose the right tablecloth for the dining table.

Size matters

There are generally accepted rules and conditions for setting a table with a tablecloth, which state that the fabric should not only cover the surface, but also hang slightly from all sides. It happens that it completely hides the supporting details. When choosing a cover, it is necessary to take into account the size of the table and the reason for the celebration.

  • if normal daily use is expected, the fabric hangs down by a maximum of 20 centimeters;
  • a more significant feast - 30 centimeters;
  • an official reception, a banquet, a wedding presupposes the presence of a large tablecloth hanging by 40 centimeters;
  • at the solemn buffet table, the legs of the table are completely covered.

The photo of a tablecloth on a table shows the most popular version of a rectangular cloth, the sides of which can be different or of the same length. They cover both square and oval countertops.

  • Rectangular surface. To begin with, it is recommended to measure the length and width of the table, adding a possible allowance from the edges to the resulting figures. Then we multiply the result by two.
  • A tablecloth on a round table involves measuring the diameter of the surface, then double the length of the edge is added, which will hang from the edges.
  • Oval or round tablecloths are also gaining popularity among consumers. Lying perfectly flat on the table top, the product forms beautiful soft folds. The size of the blade is determined in the same way as in the first option with a double-length allowance.
  • If you intend to cover a square table top, you should still additionally measure the diagonal. It will be correct if the diagonal is less than the selected product, then the corners of the table will not be visible from under the textiles.

Oval table top: coverage rules

Most often, the round table is expanded to increase the free area, therefore it is recommended to choose an oval covering or a rectangular universal product. The calculation is carried out by the following method:

  • the diameters of the countertop are measured (large and small);
  • to each figure is added double the size of the free edge, which, of course, corresponds to the event;
  • the desired dimensions are obtained for the oval cover element.

Generally accepted norms

Choosing the most suitable option, you need to take into account several nuances:

  • textile markets and shops usually offer medium standard tablecloths. So, it is better to take a larger one, so as not to be mistaken in the choice;
  • non-standard pieces of furniture (tables and chairs) should be covered with a canvas, the edge of which hangs below the level of the legs and seats;
  • beautiful sets with fluffy "skirts" are sold for buffets and banquets;
  • for a sliding version of furniture, it is better to buy two tablecloths at once;
  • the size of the finished product directly depends on the degree of possible shrinkage during washing, so you should slightly increase the length values.

Choice of fabric

The service life of a kitchen tablecloth directly depends on the quality and practicality of the material for its manufacture. For this reason, first of all, it is worth paying attention to this factor.

Most often, canvases for the kitchen are divided into two types:

  • Daily (for every day) are made from more budgetary and practical raw materials, usually equipped with moisture-resistant Teflon or acrylic compounds. They serve as decoration, complementing the interior and style of the kitchen space. It is better if the fabric does not wrinkle and is easy to maintain.
  • More elegant holiday items are decorated with additional accessories, using them exclusively at special events. There are products with a theme: Christmas, Easter, birthday, children's party or wedding celebration.

Everyday fabric offers functionality and increased usability. Here are the most popular options:

Since ancient times, oilcloth has been a topical covering, not being a textile. Both transparent and thick tablecloths can be purchased from oilcloth. Visually, it is not entirely aesthetic, but it perfectly protects the surface from everyday stains, damage and dirt. Moreover, it is a cheaper budget option that saves the family budget.

Practical and relatively cheap polyester, unlike oilcloth, has a more interesting and varied design. The exterior is decorated with patterns and ornaments. The material is easily washed, cleaned of dirt, does not wrinkle and is quite suitable for serving every day, fitting into any style.

The soft folds of the falling cotton make the table an extraordinarily cozy piece. A cotton material is released into the kitchen, impregnated with a special water-repellent compound that protects it from stains and damage. The fabric is easy and convenient to wash in warm water, put hot dishes on it. Please note that frequent washing will lead to rapid thread thinning and deterioration of raw materials.

Currently, silicone tablecloths are gaining popularity, being an excellent replacement for traditional textiles. The coating protects the countertop well from mechanical damage and dirt, keeping the furniture in perfect shape. But, usually, it is used not for decoration, but for practical purposes.

DIY tablecloth. It would seem that difficult? Cut out a piece of fabric to the correct size and simply hem the hem. But there is one subtlety. A good tablecloth should have the right corners. And another advantage of a do-it-yourself tablecloth is that you can sew napkins from the remnants of the fabric by processing the edges and corners in the same way.

Materials and tools:

sewing machine;
threads of the desired color;
ruler;
pencil or chalk;
pin;
iron.

We sew a tablecloth and napkins with our own hands:

Cut a piece of fabric of the size you need from such a calculation so that the "overhangs" on all sides are 30 cm each. Cut out square napkins from the remaining strip of fabric from the width of the strip.

Tuck the edges of the napkin 1 cm wide. Steam the folded edges with an iron.

Tuck the edges 1 cm again and steam again.

Fold the napkin diagonally right side in, wrong side out and pin together. Draw a line perpendicular to the diagonal fold of the napkin from the corner to the edge of the hem.

Place a seam along the marked line on the sewing machine.

This is what the seam will look like. It is very important that the beginning of the seam matches the corner of the napkin exactly.

Cut a corner of the napkin close to the seam (at a distance of 2 - 3 mm). Also cut off a small piece of fabric in the corner of the napkin.

Treat all corners of the napkin in the same way.

Press the seams on both sides.

Turn the seams right out, iron the hem and corners of the napkin with an iron.

Sew the napkin exactly along the edge of the hem. Iron the napkin again.

Hem all napkins in the same way.

To hem the tablecloth with your own hands, in the same way, first bend the edges 1 cm wide, and then 2 cm wide. Iron the edges.

Also fold the tablecloth diagonally, pin up, mark the seam line perpendicular to the fold line.

Sew on machine. Trim off excess fabric.

Press the seam on both sides.

Turn out and smooth out the corner.

Sew around the hem of the tablecloth.

Do-it-yourself tablecloths and napkins look neat and do not differ from the edges of purchased tablecloths and napkins.

After you have mastered this technique of sewing corner tablecloths, you can experiment. Sew with your own hands a tablecloth with embroidery, hemstitching, applique, etc.

There are several ways to sew tablecloths, because the corners and sides of the fabric can be processed in different ways. In this material, we described the traditional and basic method, having mastered which you can sew with your own hands not only festive or everyday tablecloths, but also kitchen napkins, towels and runners with neat corners and edges.

To sew a tablecloth with your own hands, you will need:

  1. A piece of suitable fabric is needed in size (what material is better to sew the tablecloth from, read the article "", in this same master class the tablecloth was sewn from flax);
  2. Threads to match the fabric and decorative trim;
  3. Sewing machine;
  4. Sewing accessories: tailor's scissors, ruler, measuring tape, pins, thimble, needle threader, crayon or marker;
  5. Decor if desired (this can be: sewing, edging, fringe, lace, braid, etc.);
  6. Iron.

Step 1. Calculate the consumption of fabric

  1. Measure the length and width of your countertop;
  2. Determine the desired length of the overhang of the fabric, that is, the distance from the edge of the table top to the edge of the future tablecloth.
  • The overhang of the fabric can be 20-40 cm or be floor-length. The longer the overhang, the more elegant the tablecloth will turn out, but also the more inconvenient to use, therefore, an overhang length of 20-30 cm is suitable for everyday use;
  • When determining the length of the overhang, take into account the percentage of shrinkage of the fabric after washing - for cotton and burlap you need to add 10 cm to the desired length of the overhang, for linen - 10-15 cm. You can go the other way - pre-wash, and then iron the fabric well.
  1. Now we take paper and a pen and calculate the fabric consumption using the following simple formula:

  • Please note that this formula indicates a 5 cm allowance for the hem, and the hem itself will turn out to be only 4 cm wide.

Step 2. Cutting out the fabric

Iron the fabric if necessary, then lay it out on the work surface, mark with a ruler and pencil, and then cut off any excess, patterns for a simple rectangular or square tablecloth are not needed.

  • The best way to outline the cut line is to pull the thread out of the fabric. To do this, you need to make a small incision in the right place, pull and carefully pull out the thread, which will be your guideline.

Step 3. Processing the corners

Now we need to style the corners so that they look nice even from the inside out. For this:

  1. We put the fabric on the table “face down”, bend its edges 1 cm on the wrong side, fix the folds with pins (if necessary, bind) and iron around the entire perimeter of the fabric.

  1. Further, in both directions from the corner, we measure the segments 2 times larger than the hem width planned by you (in this master class, the hem width is planned to be 4 cm, therefore the distance from the corner is measured 8 cm). Then both marks must be connected using a ruler and a pencil.

  1. Fold the fabric in the corner (wrong side out) along so that the marks coincide and fix the fold with pins. Then we sew a corner according to the markings.

  1. Cut off the excess in the corner, leaving only 5 mm of the seam allowance. Also cut off the edge of the remaining allowance at the fold obliquely as shown in the photo below. This must be done so that the corner of the tablecloth turns out evenly.

  1. We turn out the corner, fix it and iron it out. Then, in the described way, we process the remaining 3 corners of the tablecloth. Here's what you should get.

Step 4. Sewing the hem

And finally, we begin to process the sides: we iron the hem of the entire tablecloth, fix it with pins and sew (from the inside out) on a typewriter or manually with a blind stitch at a distance of 1 mm from the fold.
