Mules - the history of shoes and photos from current collections. How the shape of the heel affects the ability to wear shoes and ballet flats

Shoes are not just "clothes" for the feet, they are one of the most important details of style. The same outfit, worn with elegant pumps, shoes with rough “tractor” soles or ballet flats, will look different. Moreover, stylists assure that two things "make" a woman - hair and shoes. So the choice of shoes should be treated with great attention.

Let's figure out what types of women's shoes are, and what you need to wear certain models with. Photo images will help you understand how to make ensembles.

All varieties of women's shoes can be divided into two large groups. These are models with heels and shoes without heels. Both types of shoes are very popular.

The names of various models are unfamiliar to many fashionistas, since professional terms are rarely used in everyday life. But we'll try to figure it out.

boats

The most popular option for women's shoes can be safely called classic pumps, as well as their varieties.

The classic model is called Searpin. These are slip-on and strappy shoes with a rather low cut, pointed toe and thin stiletto heels. The classic hairpin has a height of 7 cm, but models with a higher heel - 10-12 cm are very popular. Of course, these are shoes not for everyday wear, but for a solemn exit.

The classic color of the boats is black. But now color models are very popular, as well as models with a print. A special chic is the pumps from Christian Louboutin, their distinguishing feature is the bright red sole.

There is an opinion that classic pumps are a universal model that fits all types of clothing. This is not entirely true. Boats are categorically not suitable for sports-style clothing. But with romantic and business dresses, cropped tight trousers and jeans, skirts of various styles, this type of shoes looks great.

Varieties of boats

Classic boats came into fashion in the middle of the last century, and during their existence, designers have come up with many different models based on classic boats.

These are models such as:

  • (Dorsey) D'orsay. The difference between this model of shoes are the cutouts in the side parts. Models can be worn with the same clothes as classic pumps, they are more suitable for summer looks.

  • Stiletto. Stillet shoes are very similar to pumps. Their difference is a rounded nose, and a thin low heel. This version of the boats looks especially good with business style clothes.
  • Kitten Hill (Kitten Heel). Pumps with a glass-shaped heel, it is wide enough at the top and gradually tapers, turning into a thin stud. The toe of such shoes can be either pointed or rounded.

  • Peep toe. This name has shoes with an open toe. The cutout on the toe can be small, shaped like a triangle or droplet, or wide enough to completely open the toes. Models of shoes with an open toe, as a rule, are worn in the warm season. The main requirement when using these shoes is a perfect pedicure. Discussions about whether open-toed shoes can be worn with tights or stockings do not subside. Some stylists allow tights to be worn with open-toe shoes, while others consider this to be bad manners. However, there is a compromise solution - stockings and tights with open toes.

  • Slingbacks. Shoes with a cutout at the heel, instead of a heel, these shoes use a strap with an elastic band or a buckle closure. The toe of such shoes can be varied - rounded or pointed, deaf or with a cutout. Looks good shoes in which the toe is decorated with perforations. You can wear slingbacks with feminine dresses with flared skirts and a relaxed business style (business casual). But with skirts or skinny jeans, stylists do not recommend wearing this type of shoes.

Platforms and tankettes

Many people confuse two types of solid soles - wedges and platforms. In fact, they look different. The wedge is a kind of wedge, it gradually thickens in the direction from toe to heel. The platform is a solid and even sole along the entire length. Both options are a more comfortable alternative to shoes with heels.

wedge heel

The wedge looks more elegant than the platform, so shoes with such a sole can be worn with feminine dresses and flared trousers. In addition to the classic wedge, designers have developed other options for such a sole.

A beveled wedge is different in that it tapers towards the bottom, so shoes with such a sole look less massive. Another way to make the wedge more elegant is to create cutouts on the back and sides of the sole.

The upper part of wedge shoes can be varied. It can be boats, and models with straps, and sandals.

Platforms

Shoes on a classic flat platform look rough, so they are used mainly to create youth looks. The most popular model is creepers (they are also creepers, they are also flatforms). These are high platform shoes with a laced upper that looks like boots.

Creepers are worn with denim sundresses and overalls, with midi skirts and tight leather trousers.

Combined models

Recently, combined models have come into fashion, in which the platform is located only under the front of the shoes, and at the back it can go into a wedge or heel.

Shoes with a platform and square high heels are called litas (Lita). They wear such shoes with tight knee-length skirts or a little shorter, with tight jeans or trousers. But such shoes will look good only on tall girls with slender legs. It is better for full and short fashionistas to choose a different model of shoes.

You should not wear such shoes with maxi skirts or flared trousers, as these clothing models hide the slimness of the legs, so the lower part of the figure will look “heavy”.

Shoes on the platform and thin high heels received the unofficial name of Louboutins. This name comes from the name of the French designer Christian Louboutin, who introduced the fashion for this style. The platform in such shoes can be hidden, that is, sheathed with the material of the top of the shoes. But sometimes the design of the platform and the top of the shoes can be different.

These shoes should be worn with cocktail or short evening dresses. Louboutins make up an excellent ensemble with shortened or tucked-up jeans or tight trousers.

Strap shoes

Shoes with any type of sole (wedge, stiletto, platform) can have such a detail as a strap. This detail is used not only for decoration, but also to support the arch of the foot.

Depending on the shape and location of the strap, the following types of shoes are distinguished:

  • Mary Janes. In this model, the strap is located on the rise. Another distinctive feature of the shoes is the rounded toe.
  • Ankle Strap. This model has a strap that wraps around the leg just above the ankle.
  • T-strap. The original model, decorated with a strap in the shape of the letter "T".

All models of shoes with straps look very feminine, so it is better to wear them with feminine style clothes. But fashionistas should keep in mind that the difference in straps visually shortens the legs, so the listed models do not suit low fashionistas.

Sandals

Open shoes that leave most of the foot exposed. The upper part of the sandals can be a weave of straps or simply have cutouts on the surface.

The sole of sandals can be any, have a thin or square heel or wedge.

Flat shoes

No less diverse models of shoes without a heel. These shoes are more comfortable, so they are often chosen as casual and leisure shoes.

Ballet shoes

The most popular type of shoes without a heel. These are very comfortable shoes that resemble boats, but have a flat sole or a square heel up to 1 cm high.

Ballerinas go great with a wide variety of clothing styles., they can be worn with skirts, dresses, trousers and shorts. But ballet flats do not suit full fashionistas, it is better for them to choose shoes with heels, even if the heel is low.

Moccasins

Shoes with soft soles made of suede or leather. Moccasins look good with trousers of any length, shorts, overalls. An interesting ensemble will turn out if you combine moccasins with light, flowing dresses.

loafers

These are shoes that look like moccasins, that is, they have a decorative seam along the front. The difference between loafers is the presence of a hard sole. Women's loafers are distinguished by a wide variety of models, they can be made on a platform, have a small square heel, be made of matte or patent leather, suede, textiles. The decor of women's loafers is also quite diverse. In addition to classic tassels and fringes, buckles, jars, and artificial flowers are often used.

They wear loafers with skirts of various lengths, cropped trousers, shorts. And also with knitted dresses of a free silhouette.

Espadrilles

Summer shoes with textile uppers and rope soles. You can wear these shoes with denim shorts, laconic summer dresses, denim skirts and sundresses.

Topsiders

Shoes similar to moccasins and loafers. The difference is a rubber white corrugated sole and a lace, threaded along the upper contour of the shoes. This type of footwear looks good with cropped trousers, shorts, short skirts.

Talking about shoes, I would like to dwell on one of the most controversial form from an aesthetic and practical point of view ... SHOE WITHOUT A BACK.

MULES & Co

MULES / MULE, SLIDE SHOES, CLOGES / CLOGS, SABO / SABOT- These are similar varieties of shoes with a low back (the part that covers the heel) or without it.

The differences between them are as follows: MULES has a closed toe, while SLIDE SHOES has an open toe. The shape and height of the heel may vary. CLOGES or SABOs differ from mules and slide shoes in a rougher shape and thick sole (platform) with a massive heel.

Historical reference claims that mules were worn by aristocrats (hmm ... and, sorry, prostitutes), and clogs and clogs were commoners. This explains the stylistic differences. For some, it was important to impress, for others, convenience and low cost mattered (initially, clogs and clogs were carved from a single piece of wood).

The difference between these types of shoes is easy to remember, but it is not so important if you evaluate shoes not as a professional, but as a consumer. In online stores, they are usually combined into a single group, so I will call them MULES & Co.

I confess that I have never been a fan of mules. Primarily for reasons of convenience. Mules or slide shoes that are too open do not hold well on the foot, as a result of which it becomes simply unsafe to wear them. It's easy to trip and fall. Especially when they are in high heels. But most of the female representatives live under the motto "BEAUTY REQUIRES SACRIFICE", in their opinion the words BEAUTY and PRACTICE are not always compatible ... Therefore, I picked up models that, while remaining super elegant, to some extent satisfy my understanding of "safety" when it comes to about shoes.

MULES & Co THIN HEEL

Stiletto heelless shoes are precisely the reason for my “ambiguous” attitude towards this type of shoe. From an aesthetic point of view, there is something "boudoir" in it ... not quite suitable for modern life. As one friend of mine noted, it’s good to lie in such shoes, and not run through the streets. And I agree with her ... The problem is that those who are eager to follow fashion trends often ignore common sense, so you have to apply "safety precautions".

As you know, a high and thin heel in itself requires the ability to walk correctly and maintain balance, therefore, when choosing shoes without a back, pay attention to how well the shoes are FIXED ON THE FOOT.

In my opinion, Mules and Co are only relatively safe when their forefoot Wraps around the foot tightly and covers it as much (or higher?) as possible. So the shoes will “slap” less, imperceptibly injuring the heel and depriving you of balance. It does not matter if the front is solid (Tory Burch, Gianvito Rossi, Vic Matie'), or will consist of separate parts and straps (Jerome C. Rousseau, Casadei, Malone Souliers, Giuseppe Ganotti, Ruper Sanderson).

Please note that I have not included Slide Shoes by Miu Miu in the list of "safe" shoes. They look amazing, but, being quite open, they do not fit snugly on the leg, so walking in them will not be as comfortable.

***

MULES & Co WITH STABLE HEEL AND WEDGE

I like these models more than the previous ones. They are more concise and look much more modern, although, perhaps, someone will seem less feminine. A thick heel and wedges more evenly distribute the load, which makes the shoes more stable and comfortable when walking. But still, the degree of “closeness” of the front part is of paramount importance in this case too.

Slide Shoes by PRADA are simply adorable, but your feet will “wobble” in them, even despite the stable heel.

MULES & Co LOW HEEL FLAT

This model is most reminiscent of home "flip flops". There is little elegance in them, but there is something sweet and funny.

Types of shoes - classification in pictures

Fashion dictates trends and trends and there are so many names of shoes that it is not surprising to confuse something! It is especially difficult to navigate and distinguish between types of shoes in English.

Let's try to cover at least some types and classifications. The signs of classification are different: season, material of manufacture, who wears it, etc.

Initially, the classification is simple: women's and men's, seasonal (summer, winter, autumn, spring,) demi-season.

Seasonal shoes are logically divided into 4 seasons. Demi-season shoes includes two periods: autumn-winter and spring-summer. We choose demi-season shoes when you need to smoothly transition from autumn to winter shoes, from winter to spring, and from spring to summer. These are exactly the shoes that are chosen not specifically for the time of year, but for weather conditions.

There is also a simple classification into women's and men's shoes, leather and non-leather. All types of shoes and their names and classification, of course, cannot be covered. But we will try to know the basics.

You can write a lot about these classifications and subspecies. But I would like to literally touch on the topic of incomprehensible words and names in a couple of words.

Thigh high boots- these are high boots, - over the knee boots. Over the knee boots are characterized by a high and narrow fit. They must be above the knee.

Timbas are common in brown, but this season has seen blues and pinks as well.

flip flops- slates, Vietnamese. This type of summer shoes has only two membranes, and they differ from each other only in the thickness of the membranes and soles.

Classification and types of men's shoes in pictures

I will most likely devote a separate topic to this, but in this post I want to show you a schematic division of men's shoes!

Almost all the shoes that I have seen in my life with a hard back are made on such a rounded heel, when the “meat” protrudes from all three sides. The back is rounded and tapers upward. Shoes and ballet shoes seem to cling to such a heel and do not fall off it. And in nature, you understand, there is diversity and all that, and heels are completely without “meat”, with “meat” only on one side or only on two. There are also various deformations such as turning the heel inward and the like.

And with such small heels, problems begin with the choice of shoes, ballet flats and sandals without straps - all those classic shoes that you really want to have in your wardrobe.

In the picture above, there is a round heel, and below the heel is completely without “meat” and the heel with “meat” is only on the sides. Blue shading shows where voids form when wearing shoes with a hard heel.

The heel wraps around the rounded heel evenly and completely, the load is distributed evenly. If the heel is narrow, then on the side where there is no “meat”, the heel only fits with the upper edge, which begins to rub and press, because the load is all on it (the red dots are the places where it will rub).

If the heel is softer, it just breaks and wrinkles, which makes the shoe look bad.

In addition to the fact that the wrong heel counter rubs or breaks, the biggest problem with small heels is slipping out of the wide heel counter. And then the girls, so that the shoes fit tightly and do not slip, begin to wear shoes one and a half to two sizes smaller!

As soon as I find out that my client or course participant has centimeter sizes that do not match the size that she usually buys, I immediately understand that she has a small heel (or a very narrow foot). For example, a girl may have a leg 25 cm long, this is 39 leg size, which means some models will be 38, some 40, especially Chinese ones may be 41. But if a girl wears 37 and 37.5 with such a leg, this is one hundred percent small heel and the foot falls out of the larger shoe. Due to tight-fitting shoes, the leg may begin to deform already in front, fingers and bones may rub, legs may get tired, but it would never occur to such a girl that she needs a larger shoe size, because she has already tried, and such shoes are not on her. holding on. And it's all about the heels! (For men, by the way, the same story if they walk in shoes and boots)

Worst of all are girls who have a heel without "meat" on all three sides and it is combined with a high instep and a wide foot in front. That's who classic shoes are generally unrealistic to find.

In the photo, for example, the most protruding part of the heel is where the tapering and edge begin in shoes with a hard heel. And that means there will be corns.

In a second, the heel will slip out of these sandals.

What to do?

Well, if it is not possible to sew shoes to order according to individual blocks, then you should try to avoid shoes that, by design, should cling to the heel when walking:

  • ordinary model ballet flats without additional fastenings

  • normal shoes without additional bindings

  • footwear that assumes that it must be supported by longitudinal tension

  • shoes and sandals with a strap instead of a heel with no additional fastenings around the ankle or instep

  • any footwear designed for a full foot. This one, even laced up to the very end, will still slip

What to wear?

1. Take shoes of your size, but with some additional bindings around! ankles. If you don’t want the straps to cut your leg, you can find a model with beige straps.

Ballet flats and sandals are the same.

2. Some boots have special sealing rollers on the heel. If the heel is not quite tiny, it will hold on to them.

3. Even shoes and flats come with such a roller.

4. With closed shoes, you can wear cotton footprints. They increase grip on the surface of the shoe, make the foot a couple of millimeters wider and improve hygiene.

5. You can use the well-known special heel holders. Not everyone will fit and not stick on any shoes, but it's not expensive to try. They are glued to the inside of the heel counter and can help fill gaps, lock in the heel and prevent chafing.

Plus, if you choose shoes for width and fullness, the foot will be held in it due to a good and comfortable fit in the front. This is especially important for narrow legs or low insteps.

In some cases, shoes with an elastic band and a soft heel can help, but here, too, you need to carefully listen to the sensations so that the stretched parts do not rub.

In a very extreme case, when you really really need to wear classic shoes or sandals, stick to the insole with double-sided tape, as celebrities do. This will work when wearing shoes on bare feet, you won’t stick in tights)). It is better to sit at home and peel off the insoles than to walk with sore and bleeding feet.

A narrow heel, of course, is not the only cause of problems with the selection of shoes (only 6 important parameters for choosing shoes with heels), but it is quite common. How are things with your heels?
