Dry the watch. Moisture has got into the watch - what should I do? Practical tips and dangerous mistakes

Wearers of a quartz or mechanical watch may encounter the problem of condensation forming under the glass. But this is not the worst thing that can happen with this accessory. Diving to depth, long swimming can lead to moisture getting into the mechanism, and the sealing gum is deformed. But there is a way out of the situation: correct operation of the watch and immediate repair if water gets into the watch.

It often happens that water gets under the glass of the watch, or condensation has formed under it. This can even happen with waterproof models if worn incorrectly, bypassing the manufacturer's recommendations. Each such accessory is marked with an indication of the permissible fluid pressure and immersion depth (from 50 to 200 meters, as a rule). If the product was exposed to static pressure within the specified data, the recommendations for use were followed, then it will not allow moisture to pass through.

But if, for example, the watch has sharply succumbed to increased pressure, the impact of water while diving from a height, then it can easily get into them. The sealing rubber is rated for the specified pressure, but not higher. You need to buy accessories from trusted manufacturers. In the online store "Best Time" you can see samples of watches that can withstand immersion at different depths and are waterproof. Even if water gets into the clock from such an online store, it can be easily removed without violating the integrity of the mechanism and repairing it.

How do I remove moisture from my watch?

At the very beginning, you need to visually determine whether there is a lot of water in the mechanism. If it is just condensation, then it will be enough to dip the product in salt or rice. They absorb all that is unnecessary. If water gets into the electronic clock, then you must immediately open it, remove the batteries and carefully dry it in the following ways:

1. Hairdryer, but no more than 15 seconds.

2. Simply dry with the open mechanism down.

3. After the first two points, lubricate the mechanism with a little gasoline for a lighter.

4. Contact the service if within 2 days all the manipulations did not help.

The same can be done with mechanical products, but without touching the parts, without violating their integrity. Of course, the countdown begins from the moment the moisture was inside. Even high-quality models can fail because of it. Therefore, it is better to ask a service center or a specialist about what to do if water gets into the clock. Repair can be more expensive if there is a noticeable delay in it. The Best Time online store has quality brand names, many of which are waterproof.

Watch manufacturers constantly convince the consumer of their uniqueness, reliability and durability. Unfortunately, the promotion does not always correspond to reality. Often, the owner discovers accumulated condensation under the watch glass. Either the machinery company produced a low-quality product, or the consumer did not adhere to the operating rules.

The fact remains that it is necessary to solve the problem of how to remove water from the watch. If your product has not passed the warranty period, the mechanism will be repaired at the service center. Independent manipulations will only harm the device, moreover, the possibility of free repairs in the warranty service salons will be lost.

But if the watch has been worn for a long time and the warranty period has long expired, then you can try to remove water from the watch yourself.

CORRECT WATCH DRYING PROCEDURE

Water is harmful to all models, with the exception of waterproof devices. In quartz models, water leads to breakdown of the electronic indicator, in mechanical models, gears and slow-motion parts begin to corrode. After a week, the quartz board completely decays, and the mechanical parts finally become unusable. The seawater that gets inside the hull speeds up the process much. If you do not take steps to fix the devices within three weeks, then in a month your favorite watch will go to the trash can.

  • It is necessary to clearly understand that if water gets into the watch, first of all, competent drying should be started by opening the back cover of the case.
  • It is advisable to dry the mechanism for about 5 hours under a fan. Then treat all fragments with gasoline or rubbing alcohol to prevent further corrosion.
  • Before manipulation, it is imperative to remove the battery from the quartz movement.
  • After processing, dry all parts thoroughly again and close the lid.

Providing first aid will not prevent you from going to the workshop. Grains of sea salt will interfere with normal lubrication; in workshops, mechanisms are treated with a specific solution. Repair specialists know how to remove condensation from watches, so it is better not to neglect their qualified help.

SELF REPAIR ERRORS

Many owners of mechanisms, when they notice that the glass of the watch has fogged up from the inside, fill it with salt or sweet water. It is believed that salt absorbs moisture, however, having seeped into small elements, it will subsequently accelerate corrosion. Sugar is no less detrimental to the clockwork.

Fragile parts of the watch cannot tolerate overheating. Devices must not be dried on a home battery, or left under the influence of direct sunlight. Doing so will ruin all rubber seals and dry out the grease.

This happens quite often. Who is to blame: an unscrupulous manufacturing company or the consumer himself who does not comply with the operating conditions - we will not figure it out. As the saying goes, “after a fight, they don’t wave their hands,” and you just need to solve the problem that has arisen. An important point! If your watch is still under warranty, whatever happens, do not handle it yourself! Self-repair, if unsuccessful, will void the warranty. In this case, it is better to immediately contact a watch repair service center, where your problem will be solved free of charge. If your watch served you faithfully after the warranty period, and such a nuisance happened, then before you run to the workshop, you need to revive your friend with your own hands. How it's done? First, let's look at how water gets into the watch. In quartz watches, an electronic indicator is the first to become unusable, in mechanical ones, gears and slowly moving parts rust. This entire process takes approximately 5-7 days. Next in line is the quartz movement board, which decays, and in mechanical watches all slow parts become completely unusable. This stage takes 14-20 days. If sea water gets into the watch, all these processes occur faster. In general, if you do not take any measures, then three weeks after water gets into the clock, they will completely cease their activities.

Thus, first of all, the drying of the watch acts as first aid. It is necessary to carefully open the back cover, dry it for 4-5 hours (you can use a hairdryer, a fan), then treat the mechanism with medical alcohol or gasoline to avoid corrosion (in a quartz watch, you must remove the battery). Then dry again and close the clock. If you get seawater, then before all these procedures, you need to rinse the watch in fresh water to wash off the sea salt. So the first aid was provided. You have saved your watch for the most part. But a subsequent visit to the workshop is required. After the water, salt may still remain on the mechanism (in the workshop it will be treated with a special solution), the lubricant necessary for the normal operation of the watch can be washed off with water. Tightening, clamping small parts is already the work of a specialist. How can this not be done? I would also like to draw your attention to how it is not recommended to dry your watch. Many people advise to immerse the mechanism in a container of salt or sugar. This is not worth doing. Although salt absorbs moisture, it can corrode over time on small parts of the mechanism. And melted sugar will lead to no less problems than water that has got into the clock. Also, the watch does not like overheating. Therefore, they should not be left in direct sunlight for a long time or dried on batteries and other heating devices. This will damage all rubber seals and dry out the oil. Sometimes it is very difficult to part with certain things that we are used to. Why leave? You just need to treat them carefully! May your watch never let you down and serve you faithfully for many years!

Casio Watch Lineage LIN-163
waterproof, then water should not penetrate into them .. I don’t want to disassemble it, it’s impossible to go to the workshop (the warranty is canceled, but there are no special workshops certified by casio unas in the city). I tried: just leave it in a dry place, put it in salt for 2 days (salt is a good adsorbent), pull out the winding device and put the watch on the battery for 2 days. the result is zero. can anyone come across - tell me how to be. the clock is a pity.

Disassemble neatly and that's it.
And the battery makes no sense.

Casio Lineage LIN-163 watch
waterproof up to 50 meters. I swam in them a couple of times, my hands (moisture gets in. A month ago I noticed a lot of moisture on the inner part of the glass. (If you shake it, then a large enough drop is going to collect). The question is: how to get rid of? After all, if they waterproof, then water should not penetrate into them ..

If the clock says 50, this does not mean that you can swim in it. According to the classification, the number 50 means that you can wash your hands / dishes, walk in the rain, etc. without fear of ruining the mechanism. The number 100, for example, means that short-term immersion in liquid is possible. And to swim - it starts from 200 and even then, without deep diving.

29.1.2006, 17:03

Heh .. the inscription water resistant or water proof only means that this watch can safely tolerate complete immersion in water. the numbers 50, 100 and 200 are the maximum water pressure that the watch must withstand. those. 50 is equivalent to diving to a depth of 50 meters, 100 - 100 meters, 200 - 200 meters.

mine says WR 50M (5 bar)

GAHAN, well, maybe, because it was long ago, I don’t remember everything. But what I said above is imprinted in my memory. I had such a watch about 10-12 years ago, the instruction was in English and it was also written that you shouldn't swim in a watch after a long exposure to the sun due to various linear extensions of the materials used.

Added:
And isho:

And the marking is entirely on the conscience of the manufacturer.

Liter without two liters

Swims only you know what and you know where. And you can't swim in such a watch - any normal seller will tell you this. If moisture gets into the watch, then you need to remove the back cover and dry it, nothing, IMHO, you don't need to disassemble it, otherwise extra parts may appear later.

I don’t know what is swimming where you. Enlighten the illiterate))

Again, you can swim in a watch with the Water Resistant 50M marking. only apparently there are exceptions to the rules

A little bit wrong. You can swim with such a watch, subject to certain points.
It is not recommended to take a hot bath with the watch on your wrist, because very hot water can damage the sealing gum and silicone grease between the case and the lid. Divers are usually in cold water.
Sudden changes in temperature
As already said etc ...that you cannot swim in the watch after prolonged exposure to the sun due to the various linear extensions of the materials used.
50 is a static pressure of 5 bar. (1bar = 10 V -5 Pa). Tap water pressure is about 3-4 bar. If a watch with such markings suddenly finds itself at a depth of 50 m, then it will withstand (static pressure), but if you throw it into the water, then there is already a dynamic immersion process (as well as if you actively wave your hands under / over the water), an impact occurs the effect of water on the clock.
And the marking is entirely on the conscience of the manufacturer.

Completely and completely FOR
And yet, about the manufacturer. Sorry, but it's not personal. Casio is considered one of the cheapest manufacturing firms, it buys mechanisms from the side (on the JAPAN MOVT. Dial), adds only external decoration - a case, a dial with hands and a bracelet. So you should not completely trust all the inscriptions, as well as what TITANIUM is.
My watch is only 30 meters away, but I confess that several times in 8 years I have taken a shower with it, washed my hands, recently dived in ocean salt water, and everything is fine. It's just that every 2 years I give them for cleaning, where they also change the same silicone grease on the seal. And also the Tissot brand speaks for itself.
if interested, here you can see the text on the subject.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. the shower is probably to blame. the gasket between the body and the dial for setting the hands has deteriorated .. we will strive for Tissot))

According to statistics, Tissot is preferred by more than 60 percent of the Swiss population (they know a lot about watches). This brand is the best ratio of reasonable price + Swiss quality.
I bought my watch in 1998 in St. Petersburg for 200 USD, since then, only the operation process. The coating has not peeled off anywhere, crystal glass (not plastic) is scratch-resistant, the design seems to look like nothing now, in general - I'm satisfied

You never want to part with your favorite watch. Not while doing housework, not on vacation, or on a run. Therefore, no one is immune from force majeure circumstances, when an accessory either falls or gets wet. From this it is not strange that on the forums so often they ask about what to do if moisture gets into the watch or condensation has formed under the glass. Everyone wants to be aware of first aid to a favorite mechanism. The 24k.ua online store has collected for you a maximum of recommendations and warnings about what you can and cannot do if moisture gets into your watch. Aware is armed.

Why does a waterproof watch get wet?

If when you buy a watch, you already know that you will take it with you to the sea, to the pool or on hikes, immediately choose waterproof models. How to choose the right waterproof products and what waterproof indicators mean, you can find out from our article. It is very important to know and remember that testing the mechanism with water pressure that exceeds the performance of your model is strictly not recommended. Doing so will allow moisture to enter and endanger your waterproof accessory.

We also draw your attention to the fact that it is a mistake to think that the water resistance indicators indicate the depth to which the chronometer can be immersed. This is not entirely true. If you just dive, then everything is correct. But if you are going to dive from a height, you should understand that when you hit the water, the pressure already becomes higher than when you freely dive under the water. Therefore, the water resistance of 200 m when swimming and when jumping from a tower is a completely different depth.

Finally, keep in mind that it is very important to buy waterproof watches only from trusted and reliable retailers, and only trusted manufacturers. The online store 24k.ua recommends brands such as Edox, Festina, Fossil, Nautica, Orient, TechnoMarine, Timex, Tissot and others. Contact our managers - and we will help you choose the right accessory. Moreover, all the offers of our range are originals from well-known watch companies, and therefore you can be sure of one hundred percent quality.

What to do if water or moisture gets into the watch?

Moisture in watches is a dangerous phenomenon. If you do not pay attention to condensation or recklessly treat the ingress of water under the glass of the product, after a week the indicator will become unusable, and after two weeks the entire mechanism board will rot. Mechanical products in 5-7 days after water ingress will begin to rust, starting from the barrel, and in 14-20 days all the parts of the mechanism will become completely unusable. Moreover, if seawater suddenly enters the hull, then all these changes will occur even faster. And it will be even more difficult to restore the accessory to work.

Is it possible to somehow help the watch on your own, until the moment when it will be possible to give it to the workshop? Yes, it is possible and necessary. Here are some simple and important tips to help provide first aid to an injured mechanism.

  1. If you have an electronic or quartz watch and it gets wet, be sure to open the cover and remove the batteries. Then dry them by leaving them open for the required time or near the fan. Further, it is recommended to lubricate the mechanism with gasoline for a lighter or medical alcohol and dry again. Only then close the lid.
  2. If you have a mechanical chronometer, you must do the same, but in no case touch the parts of the mechanism. In order not to violate their integrity. And at the first opportunity he will contact the workshop.
If seawater has entered the case, rinse the watch under running water before drying it to rinse off grains of sea salt.

Myths and mistaken methods of resuscitation of a wet watch

There are many popular methods on how to save an accessory from moisture. But the masters do not recommend believing them all. For example, they say that salt or rice saves you from condensation. They say that it is enough to immerse the watch in rice or salt for several hours, and it will draw out the moisture. But if we are talking about salt, then there is always the risk of its seeping inside, and this will accelerate the corrosion processes. Whether rice will help, it is impossible to answer unequivocally. The masters say that this method is completely useless, and does not save you from moisture. Therefore, it is still better to open and dry the case, or immediately send the model for repair.
The recommendation to dry the product in a radiator or in the sun is also considered a myth. This is fraught with the fact that small parts can overheat and fail. What's more, overheating can ruin the rubber gasket and dry out all the grease. Also, this method will lead to swelling of the dial coating. It is unlikely that you expect such a result.

What should I do to keep my watch from getting wet?
To prevent your accessory from being damaged by moisture, you just need to use it correctly.
- Do not experiment with waterproofing.
- Do not swim with a watch that is afraid of even rain.
- Do not forget to put the crown back in place after manipulating it.
- Regularly check the waterproof watch in a workshop, change the gaskets in time.

Buy the most reliable chronometers in the online store 24k.ua. Enjoy the original quality and love your watch. Strong enough to protect them from minor and major troubles.
