When a pregnancy test is informative. On what day after intercourse, the test can show pregnancy. Types of such tests

Our questions were answered obstetrician-gynecologist of the Department of Gynecology of the Doctor Plastic clinic, doctor of the highest category Tatyana Guzil.

"AiF": - What are the pregnancy tests?

T.G .: - In general, pregnancy tests can be divided into 2 types - those that determine the concentration of the pregnancy hormone - human chronic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood and those that determine hCG in the urine.

Tests of the first type can only be done under laboratory conditions, therefore, to carry out them, you must consult a doctor or directly to the laboratory.

Tests of the second type are more common because they are sold in pharmacies without a doctor's prescription, are relatively inexpensive and easy to use, and can be done at home.

These tests, in turn, are divided into "test strips" / "strip tests" (strips for dipping into a container with urine) - this is the most common and inexpensive method of testing, "tablet" tests (the device has a plastic package and a special case for collecting urine), "jet" tests (devices that can be placed directly under the stream of urine) and "electronic" (digital) tests of the new generation (the principle of action is the same as in the previous ones, only instead of changing the color, the inscription "pregnant" appears or “not pregnant.” Also, some models also have additional functions: calculating the expected date of birth with a positive result.

"AiF": - What is the principle of pregnancy tests?

T.G .: - The principle of operation of the above pregnancy tests is based on the detection of the "pregnancy hormone" (hCG) secreted by the placenta from the moment the embryo is implanted into the uterine wall throughout pregnancy. This hormone blocks the function of the ovaries, which produces the next egg, thereby preventing secondary pregnancy. The reliability of this test is very high - there is no placenta, no hCG.

Accuracy of the result

AiF: - Is there a difference between a cheap test (10-80 rubles) and an expensive one (about 300 rubles)?

T.G .: - The difference is not very big. Expensive and highly sensitive inkjet and electronic tests are able to determine the onset of pregnancy a few days before the expected start of menstruation, cheaper tests - after the first day of delay. But in any case, the correct use of the test affects the reliability of the test - since even the most expensive test can be mistaken if it is carried out in violation of the requirements.

"AiF": - How much does it cost to buy pregnancy tests - one, three or five to get an accurate answer?

The most proven way to detect pregnancy is to have a blood test. Blood levels of certain hormones increase throughout pregnancy. This is one of the most reliable methods for determining a special situation.

But not every woman can conduct such an analysis, sometimes the reason is reluctance, sometimes there is simply no possibility. And many simply do not see the point in spending money when there is an alternative way to resolve the issue.

How easy it is to detect pregnancy

The easiest way to check (positive result)

The most affordable, simplest way to determine pregnancy is a test. You can buy it at absolutely any pharmacy. The price range is huge. It is often a small, narrow strip that is treated with a special reagent.

This type of diagnosis is quite accurate. Many manufacturers claim that the accuracy can be up to 99%. But it still depends on when you will make the diagnosis. How many days after conception can the test show pregnancy? On the packages they write that from the first day of absence of menstruation, you can use the tester.

But many begin to feel internal changes even before the onset of the monthly cycle. Experts say that the accuracy of such methods depends on the timing and there are more sensitive strips, there are less. But if you do everything on time, almost any test will show the result.

Do not do research immediately after conception. The level of chorionic hormone, thanks to which pregnancy is determined, will increase only after a while. Usually, a sufficient period is seven days for the test to show pregnancy, because many are interested in the question - how many days you can use it after conception. Therefore, it is possible, but still not recommended, to use a test to determine pregnancy before delay. This will not always be an accurate result (you need to be prepared for the fact that it will be false), but sometimes it can be determined in advance.

Positive and negative result

Ovulation occurs around the middle of the cycle. But fertilization may not occur on the same day, but within a week. And the level of the hormone will increase only on the fourteenth day after ovulation.

It makes no sense to use a test for ovulation, if only fertilization (fertilization occurs after conception!) Took place in the last cycle. It only lasts 24 to 48 hours. During this period, the chances of getting pregnant are very high. When ovulation is over, the chances of getting pregnant are virtually nonexistent. An exception is late ovulation, before menstruation.

In the absence of menstruation, a diagnosis must be made and if it shows a positive result, then the pregnancy was determined. If it is negative, it is worth repeating the procedure after a while, to exclude a false result.

Home diagnostic methods

Tablet version of the test

Now there are many ways to determine your condition on your own at home, which will help identify pregnancy within a couple of days after ovulation using a test. On the shelves of pharmacies, we can see several types of tests:

  • strip test, waiting for a reaction from three to five minutes;
  • tablet, reactions after five minutes;
  • jet, just a couple of seconds;
  • digital or electronic, operates on the inkjet principle.

Convenient in that it makes no sense to look out for the appearance of a strip. The result is shown on the screen.

Evitest ProofA device with a special window, into which you need to add a few drops of urine. Susceptibility from 10-25 mME / ml.from 50 to 150 rubles4
Frautest COMFORTWithout the need to collect urine in a reservoir, the method of application comes from the name. The most convenient way to determine the state of pregnancy is several days late. Susceptibility 10 mME / mlfrom 150 to 250 rubles5

Before checking. Check the expiration date of the product. The lower the sensitivity figure, the more accurate diagnosis is possible in the early stages.

Terms of determination after implantation

After how many days it is possible to make a pregnancy test after implantation. Devices that have a sensitivity of 10 mU / ml, with the help of them, you can determine pregnancy from the seventh to the tenth day after conception or implantation. Therefore, it makes no sense to conduct tests before this period. Even the most sensitive can give false positive and negative results before delay. Because the level of hCG is necessary (human gene, with the help of this hormone pregnancy is determined) will not reach the required level. In order not to torture yourself in vain, the test should be carried out ten days after the menstruation has not come. Or after two days, then for confirmation after some time.

The process of conception goes something like this

The optimal days when the test can be done after implantation depends on:

  • how sensitive and high-quality the tester is;
  • what is the condition. When a miscarriage is threatened, hormones are produced more slowly in relation to normal pregnancy;
  • correct execution. It is necessary to do everything as written, according to the instructions.

If the results are negative, but menstruation still has not started, it is worth repeating the procedure.

How the tester works

Sets the level of hCG in urine

All pregnancy tests work according to the same principle. They determine the level of hCG in the urine. This hormone begins to be produced when the placenta develops. In women, under normal conditions, it is normal - it is from 0 to 5 mU / ml. From the first week of fertilization, the level of this hormone and its concentration increase.

Testers are distinguished by sensitivity into two types:

  • those that determine the concentration of hCG from 10 mU / ml. A similar specimen can determine the state as early as five, seven days after fertilization;
  • those that can determine the concentration from 25 mU / ml. They are the cheapest in the pharmacy and determine the condition at a later date.

So the principle of work.

  1. They set the hCG level.
  2. The determination is possible due to the fact that each tester has an antibody to hCG. When the level is sufficient, antibodies react.
  3. Red streaks appear during reaction.
  4. It can be determined before the start of the menstrual cycle, and then. After a delay, the result will be more accurate. But you can check and repeat.
  5. The timing depends on the timing of ovulation.

It is best to conduct a pregnancy test in the morning, then it will show a true result. Because the urine is most concentrated in the morning.

When a second strip appears, the result is positive with a high probability (approximately 99%). A weak streak is also considered a positive result, but the hCG level is still too weak.

In some cases, you can get a false positive result - this can be due to certain medications or if there is a tumor.

New unused device

Sometimes there may be a false negative. It happens:

  • when the concentration of the hormone has not yet reached the required level;
  • in case of impaired renal function;
  • too much liquid was drunk before the test.

Correct application of the instruction

The principle of the test, which will show whether you are pregnant or not, is very simple:

  • it is necessary to wait for a certain day (whether it is a delay or you have calculated certain days since ovulation);
  • in the morning you collect urine in some container (the container must be clean);
  • lower the test strip to a certain mark for a few seconds;
  • then you need to wait for this from three to five minutes;
  • place the strip on a clean surface;
  • after ten minutes the test is invalid;
  • one bright red stripe - negative;
  • two bright red stripes - positive;
  • other cases (when the strip appeared, but the second - the result is invalid, or, when the second strip is barely noticeable, it is worth doing another test, after a while).

Self-diagnosis in early pregnancy with pregnancy tests allows you to quickly find out the result. But it is important to remember that only a doctor's examination will be more accurate. After all, all the nuances of our body cannot be studied at home, for example, an ectopic pregnancy or the manifestation of other diseases.

The principle on which the pregnancy test is based.

The future placenta, from the very first day of its existence, secretes a special chorionic hormone that blocks the function of the ovaries producing the next egg, thereby preventing secondary pregnancy. It is on the detection of such a hormone that the principles of early diagnosis of pregnancy (from the very first day of delay in menstruation) are based. That is, the test is designed so that it "notices" the required level of hCG in a woman's body. On what day of pregnancy can the test show pregnancy? It all depends on the physiology of each woman. This may be on the first day of the delay in menstruation, and it happens after 5 days. That the test can determine pregnancy one day after conception is a misconception. Only, as the concentration of the hormone in the urine increases, it is really possible to find out the result. Despite the quality of the tests, on which their sensitivity depends, the answer "yes" or "no" will be only after 14 days after the onset of ovulation, which coincides in time with the delay in subsequent menstruation. This is why doctors recommend only testing for pregnancy after a missed period.

What are the pregnancy tests?

One of the most common pregnancy tests nowadays is the inkjet test. Its peculiarity lies in the presence of special particles inside the test, which, when hCG is detected, instantly attach to it, thereby making it visible. It is believed that the inkjet test can guarantee 90-100% of the result, which is already known at the time of completion of the procedure. after just a minute. So, you can find out about your "position" already in the first days of your period delay. Despite its positive reputation, the test has its own small errors. The result may be false

  • if the inkjet test is not expired;
  • if there are no diseases associated with the excretion of hCG in the urine (tumor, ovarian dysfunction ...);
  • if you have not taken hormonal medications;
  • if no diuretics were taken on the day of testing.

One of the innovations is interactive pregnancy tests. Their action is unusual. You need to enter your data in the computer, then put your thumb on the square on the computer screen. Changing the color of the square will be the answer. Red indicates pregnancy. I think these tests are just a joke.
Also, at the pharmacy you can buy other types of pregnancy tests:

  • test strip or strip test (in the form of strips - the most common and inexpensive testing method);
  • test tablet. Such a test operates according to the principle of the above, only it has a plastic package and a special case for collecting urine);
  • jet test (placed under the urine stream and does not require a container to collect urine)
  • electronic test. The principle of operation is the same as in the previous ones, only instead of changing the color, the inscription "pregnant" or "not pregnant" appears.

When to get a pregnancy test?

In the instructions for some tests, they write that the test works already on the seventh day after conception, which occurs in the middle of the cycle. However, by this time, the amount of chorionic gonadotropin may not always accumulate, to which the test will respond. It is best to use the test when your period is expected to begin.

After the test is done, regardless of the results, you need to see a doctor. If the assumptions about pregnancy are confirmed, the doctor will rule out an ectopic pregnancy, and early registration will be a good insurance for the successful development of pregnancy. If the delay continues, and the test shows a negative result, the doctor will help to understand the causes of the menstrual irregularity.

How can you use a test (which you can buy at a pharmacy) to determine if you are pregnant? Using the test strip:

  • dip the test strip into the morning urine portion for 20-30 seconds;
  • put it on a horizontal dry surface and evaluate the result within 5 minutes

If 1 red stripe appears on the test, then there is no pregnancy, if two red stripes, this means pregnancy.

To get an accurate result, the main thing for a woman is to follow the exact instructions always included in the test you buy and choose. If the result is obtained, it can only be confirmed by visiting a gynecologist and doing an ultrasound.

Due to the deep penetration of the embryo into the thickness of the uterine wall, ultrasound diagnostics of pregnancy becomes possible only when the embryo, while developing, goes beyond the walls of the uterus in size and begins to stretch it (i.e. from 3.5 weeks of pregnancy). At an earlier stage, pregnancy can be confirmed with a blood test for hCG

Effectiveness of pregnancy tests

The accuracy of the tests is very high, it reaches 97%, but in some cases the test may give an erroneous result. This happens mainly if the test was performed without following the instructions. If you do not test in the morning, you can do the test at any time of the day, but you must not go to the toilet for 4 hours before the test. In some cases, the test can show a false positive result, this happens in the presence of certain diseases. The test can show a false negative result if the concentration of human chorionic gonadotropin in the body is not high enough, so the test should always be repeated a few days after the first test. The concentration of hCG during pregnancy increases every day by about 2 times

  • You should not try to diagnose pregnancy later than the period indicated on the test, namely after 5 minutes from the beginning of the diagnosis. Only during this time the test shows a reliable result, if much more time has passed since the start of the diagnosis, and even if the second strip indicating pregnancy appeared during this time, this will not be a reliable result.
  • The level of hCG in the blood is higher than in the urine, so a blood test can give a positive result if the pregnancy test is still negative.
  • The test is most informative when it is performed in the morning, provided that you do not empty your bladder at night.
  • If your menstrual cycle is irregular, your pregnancy may be shorter than expected, so the test may show a false negative result.
  • You cannot use the test in a stale portion of urine, in which case the test may show an incorrect result, the test is performed immediately after urination.

The test can show a false result if it is of poor quality, so you should always buy it from pharmacies and check the expiration date. / 7guru /

It should be remembered that the test cannot always determine an ectopic pregnancy, and in any case, you need to consult a doctor if there is a delay in menstruation. The fact is that with an ectopic pregnancy, hCG is produced less than with a normal pregnancy and the test can show only 1 strip, although all the subjective signs of pregnancy can be observed: increased breast sensitivity, nausea, unusual sensations in the lower abdomen, irritability, tearfulness, etc. tp

Despite the variety of tests, they all obey the same principle of work, determining the amount of hCG produced during the growth of the placenta and contained in the urine. Normally (in the absence of pregnancy), its maximum indicator is 5 mU / ml, however, from the first days of conception, its level begins to gradually increase. A fair question arises: when to do a pregnancy test?

Actually, it is possible to determine whether conception has occurred a week after the delay, and earlier. But in this case, a variety of tests is taken into account, which, although they work according to the general scheme, still differ in the degree of sensitivity (divided by type).

The first type is able to determine the presence of pregnancy, starting from an indicator of 10 mU / ml and is especially sensitive, since it gives a result sometimes even a week after the act. The second type "catches" later terms, "focusing" on indicators starting from 25 mU / ml and above. Accordingly, they are cheaper. In fact, all tests determine the presence (or absence) of gonadotropin.

Test types

Stripes. Most affordable. The strip is dipped in urine, previously collected in a dry and, of course, clean dish and kept for twenty seconds. The result is evaluated after five minutes.

Tablet. These tests are more reliable than "strips" due to the protection of the reagents with plastic boxes. With a pipette already in the kit, you need to drop the liquid into the window located on the test. In this case, the result is also evaluated in five minutes.

Inkjet. They belong to the latest generation, the most modern and comfortable. No urine collection is required. It is enough just to substitute the test under the stream while urinating. The result also appears after five minutes.

So the first question is: when to take a pregnancy test?Definitely after the delay. HCG appears immediately after the introduction of the sperm into the uterus, but first it appears in the blood, and only then in the urine. Since implantation is possible only a week after ovulation (or a little later), and the growth of the hormone level is slow, it takes some time for the test to fix it. The time frame is determined only by this moment. In other words, the test will be able to detect the presence of gonadotropin only after about 12-14 days from the day of ovulation.

The lower the sensitivity of the test, the later the pregnancy is determined. The most sensitive tests (jet) can show pregnancy up to a week before the expected period. Strip strips show pregnancy from the second day of the delay. However, these are only statistics. There are cases (of course, individual) when implantation occurs later or, conversely, earlier. Therefore, an early test may not reflect reality.

When to use the test

Regardless of what results you would like to see on the test, it will most likely be difficult for you to wait until morning. Are there any restrictions on the time of day? Let's try to figure it out.

First, let's try to understand the principle of the test mechanism. It's pretty simple. The embryo, implanted into the uterus, activates the production of gonadotropin - it is its presence that indicates the onset of pregnancy. Test reagents are tuned to trap gonadotropin, which changes the color of the test strip during a chemical reaction.

Now let's turn to logical thinking for help. If hCG is already in the blood, at a level sufficient for determination, then, accordingly, the time of day at which the procedure will be carried out by you does not make a fundamental difference - the hormone from the urine cannot disappear and its level will not decrease. However, if you decide to carry out the procedure in the evening and you are not very confident about the timing, then it is better to postpone the test and wait until the next day, since the concentration of hCG in the morning will be slightly higher than the night before, and therefore the test will be more reliable.

But if the delay has already come (at least three days, taking into account the regularity of the cycle), then the highly sensitive pregnancy test will show already regardless of the chosen time of day.

I would like to add some more recommendations to the above:

  • use only fresh urine for analysis;
  • limit the amount of fluid intake before the test;
  • do not take diuretics that dilute your urine.
  • try to stop urinating at least three hours before the test.

Can the test show the wrong result

  1. If you suddenly saw a strip that appeared on the test, then the probability of pregnancy is at least 99%.
  2. If the strip is barely visible on the test, the result should be considered positive. The reason for the weak staining lies in the low concentration of hCG so far.
  3. False positive results are possible with tumors and certain medications.
  4. A negative test in an actual pregnancy can be with:
  • insufficient concentration of hCG (too early analysis);
  • impaired renal function (hCG simply does not enter the urine);
  • a large amount of liquid drunk before analysis (hCG is "washed out" to such a low concentration that the test simply does not recognize it). Taking into account these amendments, we summarize: with a positive test, an error is excluded, with a negative test, it is unlikely, but possible, especially with signs of pregnancy.

A reciprocal question: what are the signs of pregnancy?Perhaps these signs should be divided into two categories: probable signs and possible signs.

Probable signs include:

  • delayed menstruation with a regular cycle without interruption;
  • increased basal temperature;
  • a change in the uterus (both structure and size change), determined by the gynecologist;
  • cyanosis of the cervix and the vagina itself.

Possible signs include:

  • pulling pain in the lower abdomen (comparable to pain during menstruation);
  • swelling and some breast tenderness;
  • "Abnormal" perception of smells (this includes exacerbation of the sense of smell);
  • irritability, tearfulness, nervousness;
  • changing food preferences;
  • nausea (and sometimes vomiting);
  • frequency of urination;
  • drowsiness;
  • fast fatiguability.

Signs are not always diagnosed and not in all women, they can indicate not only a probable pregnancy, so you should not rely on them especially. Therefore, for one hundred percent certainty, it is better to take into account both the signs and the test indicator, and the results of the examination by the gynecologist.

Test rules

Finally, we will highlight in more detail the rules for using tests step by step.

  1. If you have a test strip, open the bag and remove it. Collect a portion of urine in a thoroughly washed and absolutely dry glass container. Lower the test to exactly the level indicated by the arrows for ten seconds. Place the strip on any surface that does not absorb moisture (the rims of utensils that have collected the urine will work). Look at the result after five (maximum - ten) minutes.
  2. If you have a test cassette, open the bag and remove the test and pipette. Collect urine. Pipette four drops of urine directly into the cassette window. Look at the result in five (maximum - ten) minutes.
  3. If you have a midstream test (or inkjet test), open the bag and remove the contents. Remove the cap. Taking the test by the handle, place it under your urine stream for 7-8 seconds so that the absorbent surface is wet. Cap the test. Look at the result in five (maximum - ten) minutes.

Already in the first minute, a slowly moving wave will begin to appear in the diagnostic field (its absence indicates an insufficient amount of urine on the absorbing surface). Then a stripe (or two) will appear. Two strips confirm pregnancy, one denies.

The effectiveness of the test depends on strict adherence to the instructions.

Notes

  1. The test should be hermetically sealed and can only be opened immediately before analysis.
  2. The test is used only once.
  3. Don't use expired tests.
  4. Be clear about the time frame of the analysis.
  5. Do not test near heat sources.
  6. At an early date, the second stripe usually appears longer and weaker, at a later date, faster and brighter.
  7. For complete confidence, a second test is carried out a week after the first.

In order for a home pregnancy test to show accurate results, it must be done correctly: any mistake will cause false data. It should be understood that no matter how high sensitivity the analyzer has, it will not give one hundred percent guarantee. Accurate data can be obtained only after examination by a gynecologist and blood donation for hCG.

When can I do a pregnancy test

Any home pregnancy test is aimed at determining the level of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine. This hormone begins to intensively produce chorionic tissue as soon as the fertilized egg is fixed on the walls of the uterus. HCG daily grows exponentially, and its presence in the blood can be determined as early as on the 7th day of pregnancy, in the urine - a couple of days later. For this reason, research done before this date may give false results.

Another point: a woman can only become pregnant during ovulation. This is the name of the period when a mature egg leaves the follicle and passes into the fallopian tube, where fertilization takes place. This period lasts 2-3 days. With a 28-day cycle, in most cases it begins on day 14, but each organism is individual, therefore, it is impossible to accurately predict the moment of the beginning and end of ovulation without special tests.

If fertilization has occurred, the woman will by this time be 2-3 weeks pregnant, so the concentration of hCG in the urine will be at a level sufficient to confirm or deny conception.

If your periods are irregular, it is difficult to predict when you ovulate. In this case, 10-12 days should be counted from the moment of the alleged pregnancy, after which the test should be done. The probability of a false negative result is high, so after a week the test must be repeated, or even better - donate blood for hCG. To make it easier, you can purchase ovulation test strips and use them during your cycle. Some of these are sold with a pregnancy test.

Often the analysis shows false positives. This is possible if a miscarriage has recently occurred or an abortion was made, the woman is taking hormonal drugs. Sometimes an increased level of the hormone indicates an oncological disease, false pregnancy.

Important: you need to test the very first, morning urine. After a night's rest, the natural concentration of the hormone in it is maximum. To obtain correct results, thoroughly wash and wipe dry before testing: the presence of foreign substances in the test sample will distort the analysis.

How to use a pregnancy test

Before testing, you need to make sure that the analyzer is not expired, carefully study the instructions. The further scheme of actions is as follows. Urine is collected in a special container or pipette and then placed on an absorbent layer that contains elements that react with hCG. After that, you need to wait from 1 to 5 minutes (depending on the manufacturer's instructions) and check the results. One bar indicates that there is no pregnancy. Two lines, even if the second is weak, indicate a high probability of conception.

The accuracy of testing depends on the quality of the analyzer. If cheap reagents were used in its manufacture, the sensitivity of the device will be low, and an error is possible in both directions. For this reason, it is better to buy a test that indicates a value of 10 mIU / ml. Higher numbers - 20, 30, 40 reduce the reliability of the results. In addition, preference should be given to well-proven remedies. Good reviews were collected by the products of Frautest, Clearblue, Evitest, Premium Diagnostics.

The most popular type of testing is the test strip. The analysis must be done following the recommendations of the instructions for use:

  1. Urine in the morning in a clean container (in no case put the strip under the stream of urine).
  2. Carefully open the package, take out the analyzer, making sure that no dirt or water gets on it. Do not touch the area with reagents with your hands.
  3. Dip the strip vertically inward to the mark indicated on it (no deeper), holding the painted end.
  4. Keep in urine for 10-30 seconds.
  5. Remove the analyzer from the liquid and place it on a dry horizontal surface.
  6. After the time indicated in the instructions, evaluate the result (in most cases, after 3-5 minutes). Do not pay attention if the second line appears or disappears after 10 minutes. These data will be uninformative, and only indicate that a false reaction has gone.

Tablet

The sensitivity of plate (cassette) tests is 20-25 mMel / ml, which allows you to obtain highly accurate results with a properly conducted study. Outwardly, the device resembles an elongated case with two windows: one displays the results of the study, the other pours urine. The package includes a pipette and a container for collecting urine.

Inside the plate is a reagent-treated material containing antibodies to hCG. If a woman is pregnant, when tissue fibers come into contact with urine, hormone and antibodies interact with each other, which leads to staining of the information window. To do everything right and reduce the risk of error, you need to follow these instructions:

  1. Open the packaging with clean hands, make sure that the device works correctly.
  2. Place the test on a flat, dry surface.
  3. Collect morning urine in a container.
  4. Draw up some liquid into the pipette.
  5. Drop 3-4 drops into a small window.
  6. Wait 5-7 minutes.

When the time has expired, a control strip will appear in the information window, the presence of which indicates that the test was performed correctly, urine has entered into contact with the reagent. The presence of a second strip indicates pregnancy. Do not take note of its appearance after 10 minutes: this indicates a false reaction of the test components with each other.

The sensitivity of the inkjet tests is 10 mMel / ml and therefore the results are considered the most reliable. There are fibers inside the product, along which the liquid quickly rises to the part of the rod where the reagent is located. If hCG is present in the test fluid, it will bind to the antibodies inside the analyzer. The result is a second strip.

The advantage of inkjet research is the speed and ease of analysis. The instructions for the pregnancy test indicate that it should be done as follows:

  1. Open sealed packaging with clean hands.
  2. Remove the protective cap from the product.
  3. The first use case: while urinating, place part of the test strip under the stream so that the edge with the reagent points down.
  4. The second option for use: collect urine in a clean container, lower the edge of the product there for 15-20 seconds.
  5. Put on a protective cap.
  6. Place the test on a horizontal surface.
  7. After 3-5 minutes, the result will appear in the window: one or two strips, or plus or minus.
  8. Disregard the data received after 10 minutes.

Digital devices are characterized by high precision. They are able to show the result 5 days before menstruation and even indicate the gestational age. The only caveat: with such early testing, the accuracy is 65%. If the study is done the day before the start of menstruation, with a correct test, these figures will rise to 98%. Act according to the following scheme:

  1. Take the analyzer out of the box, remove the protective cap.
  2. Substitute the open edge for 5 sec. under the stream so that it points downwards. At the same time, make sure that the other part of the device does not get wet.
  3. The appearance of an hourglass on the screen means that the urine collection was done correctly and the results are being processed.

After 1-3 minutes, the display will show plus or minus. Some devices write “Pregnant” or “Not pregnant”. If conception is confirmed, the estimated period will be shown under the plus sign: 1-2 weeks, 2-3 weeks, 3+.

Some companies, for example, PTeq, release the device in the form of a flash drive that can be connected to a computer, after which the data will be displayed on the monitor. Taking into account the concentration of hCG, the computer can even indicate the approximate date of birth.

Reusable digital tests

Some manufacturers for detecting conception produce reusable electronic devices with removable cartridges or several pieces per package. Some of them are able to determine not only conception, but also the time of ovulation. For example, the Clearblue Fertility Monitor kit includes a digital readout, 20 cartridges for ovulation and 4 cartridges for pregnancy.

Like the disposable analyzer, reusable tests can be used several days before your expected period. The testing scheme is similar to using a disposable device. The only caveat: if conception did not take place, discard the used cartridge, insert a new one.
