Satin stitch embroidery with diagrams and photos. Exhibition of embroidered paintings by Nadezhda Liberova “I create from

Stitch embroidery is a very time-consuming and technically complex technique that requires special skills. The job requires patience and concentration. To create a beautiful picture requires a good sense of color and maximum perseverance. But as a result, you will get a picture that looks like a painting.

There are no strict rules in the stitch embroidery technique, just as there are no ready-made schemes and instructions, so you need to start with simple work, mastering all types of stitches on flower arrangements, as experienced craftswomen advise.

The most difficult type of satin stitch embroidery is the Chinese technique of silk embroidery on transparent silk. The works of Chinese craftswomen, unusually realistic, meticulously executed, amaze the imagination, creating the illusion of presence. And double-sided canvases of transparent silk, with different plots on each side, are the most expensive items of inheritance. And this is no coincidence, because China is both the birthplace of this embroidery technique and the birthplace of silk, the secrets of production of which have long been hidden from the world. The perseverance of Asian masters and craftswomen also remains unsurpassed.

Getting familiar with satin stitch embroidery, one of the most sophisticated needlework techniques, is easier than it seems at first glance. But those who take it seriously warn: one has only to start...

Where to begin?

As usual, with preparation. First of all, you should find materials and tools.

  • The choice of needle depends on the type of fabric and thread. The thinner the fabric, the closer the stitches will be located to each other and the more accurately the work will turn out.
  • Threads - can be different (especially when it comes to decorating clothes or interior items), but for beginners it is better to take standard floss for training.
  • You can embroider with satin stitch both on the frame and on the hoop. The second option seems more convenient to many, as it allows you to quickly weaken or, on the contrary, increase the tension of the material at the right time.
  • The fabric should match the threads. For floss, the ideal option is cotton. If you are working with silk threads, take a closer look at the thin batiste.
  • And, of course, you will need small handy scissors.

Do not neglect the preparation of the workplace, because the convenience of your position at work depends on how long you can devote yourself to creativity without getting tired. And good lighting will help preserve vision and improve the quality of work. You may also need a magnifying glass for embroidery.

  • base with printed image;
  • DMC threads disassembled on the organizer;
  • embroidery needle;
  • training DVD;
  • hard plastic packaging with euroslot.

How to choose a needle and thread for embroidery stitch

Almost any thread is suitable for embroidery. For fine fabrics, cotton and silk are used.

The most common thread for embroidery with satin stitch is floss. Each thread (skein) consists of 6 thin threads, which are easy to separate and use separately. Floss manufacturers offer the widest palette - up to 400 shades.

Cotton thread "Iris" or wool looks good on dense fabrics, but the number of shades is very small. Sewing threads for satin stitch embroidery are not used because of their strong twisting.

As for the selection of needles, there are no special requirements, you just need to rely on the thickness of the thread and fabric. A thinner canvas-base will require embroidery in 1-2 floss threads. Make sure that the eye of the needle is not too wide so that the fabric is not deformed. Rougher canvases are embroidered with a full skein of floss or wool.

Numbers of needles for embroidery of thin fabrics - 1-3, for dense cotton - 4-8 number, for dense wool - 9-12.

Stitch embroidery rules

  1. Sufficiently dense fabric (not jersey). In the case of embroidery on knitwear, use interlining or other sealant, which can then be cut off. If the fabric is stretched well, the pattern will not deform.
  2. Drawing transfer methods: carbon paper, tracing paper, special washable markers. You can use a thermal transfer pencil or a finished drawing, which is transferred to the base with an iron.
  3. Hoop the fabric carefully in the hoop.
  4. Preferred threads are floss or silk. Shade cards from well-known manufacturers - DMC, Madeira, Anchor - have hundreds of items and will allow you to select and perform the most subtle transitions, especially if it is satin stitch embroidery. You need to choose proven schemes, then your work will be incredibly realistic.
  5. The outline of the pattern should be hidden, so embroider by slightly going beyond it.
  6. The stitches should cover the material tightly so that it is not visible.
  7. Different stitch directions will allow you to achieve interesting color effects.

Where to look for satin stitch patterns for beginners

If you decide to learn to embroider on your own and buy everything you need, you can easily find many patterns in needlework books. Step by step tutorials detail how to do the job. Patterns for satin stitch embroidery - flowers - have been the most popular for a long time. You can find an option for every taste.

Also on sale you can find ready-made kits for beginners, they already have threads of the right colors attached to the organizer, a detailed diagram, fabric, and a needle.

Embroidery technology with a simple stitch

In a simple smooth surface, the stitches are made parallel to each other, they fill the part tightly, while the edges of the pattern are even. One of the types of needlework that requires special care is satin stitch embroidery. The schemes look simple, but the execution of motives requires precision.

The simple surface is double-sided, so the front and the wrong side of the product look the same. It looks very nice and allows you to use this technique everywhere. The ends of the thread are hidden under the main fabric of stitches, but knots are not made.

Thread fastening is done like this. Inside the element, you need to make a few stitches “forward the needle”, then stretch the thread so that the end remains on the surface of the pattern. Next, the embroidery stitches will cover the end of the thread, and it will not be visible.

Simple patterns for embroidery: flowers

After the working thread is fixed, the main pattern is sewn with dense stitches, exactly along the line of the pattern. This requires precision and patience.

The stitches can overlap at different angles, but always parallel to each other. Watch the thread tension.

Floral motifs are a very popular satin stitch embroidery. Schemes are very diverse, different levels of complexity.

For example, you can embroider a simple flower using colored threads.

Getting started - the center of the flower. We use a simple smooth surface, we do the leaves in the same way. We embroider the antennae with a stalk stitch. As a result, you will get a beautiful smooth double-sided drawing.

Undoubtedly, everything turned out perfectly for you!

Simple schemes for satin stitch embroidery will allow novice craftswomen to feel confident.

clothing decoration

The most popular motif for decorating clothes is flower embroidery. The schemes may be the simplest, but the result is simply amazing. Folk costumes have long been decorated with rich embroidery. Popular schemes for satin stitch embroidery on clothes will allow you to turn modern things into trendy ones in just a couple of hours.

For example, we will decorate a simple T-shirt with embroidery, we will use a floral motif.

We will need:

  • scheme for satin stitch embroidery;
  • floss;
  • small plastic hoops;
  • washable marker for transferring the picture;
  • needle;
  • hoop.

We transfer the scheme by the method "to the light" with the help of a marker. We fix the fabric in the hoop and proceed to embroidery.

First, we perform embroidery of branches, a seam “forward a needle”.

We go around the contours of the leaves and then fill them with a simple surface.

We also embroider flowers with a simple stitch according to the scheme.

When the entire pattern in the hoop is completed, move them to a new location.

And here is the result: a trendy embroidered T-shirt.

Clothing decorated with embroidery has a special character, because it is unique. This is a great gift for loved ones or for yourself.

Thus, satin stitch embroidery is a wonderful needlework that will give you many pleasant minutes.

At the book market, I was lucky enough to grab an old German book about different types of embroidery. I'll start with the simplest - satin stitch embroidery of miniature paintings.

Look at the embroidered motifs, and also, if you are interested in the technology of work, view the embroidery lesson with explanations of how exactly this is done. Everything is very simple, as always!

satin stitch embroidery

Embroidery with a straight stitch, also called a long stitch, is embroidered in parallel, close to each other stitches, vertical rows, while the surface is completely filled with embroidery.

Stitch embroidery of a picture or miniature is performed after precise marking or according to a pattern drawn on the fabric or a pattern previously transferred to it. This embroidery technique is exceptionally suitable for the manufacture of carpets, wall hangings, paintings or pillowcases.

If you take thick woolen yarn, you can embroider a unique handmade rug. If you hang several of these framed works on the wall, it will look great.

Look first at one example of a winter picture with trees without leaves. Below, at the very end of the post, after a schematic description of the technique, there are a few more examples of satin stitch embroidered paintings.

On sale there is a great variety of kits specifically for embroidery, there is everything you need, threads of the appropriate colors, pattern, base material. But it seems to me that it is more interesting to come up with your own motive, or find and then change it so that you can apply it in your work.

How to embroider with satin stitch - a lesson for beginners

The first photo shows how to start embroidery - the very first stitch. The front threads will lie strictly parallel, and the wrong ones will go with a slope, since the next stitch starts a little away from the previous one.

The second is also embroidered exactly, the end of the needle comes out a little to the left.

Next, you can see a series of stitches, they are made close, without gaps. In the figure, they are all the same length, but so far this is only for clarity. The following are simple patterns in which satin stitches of different lengths are used, due to which such interesting fancy ornaments are obtained.

With straight stitch embroidery, different geometric shapes can be well combined with each other - lines, teeth, triangles or squares, so that beautiful, graphic patterns are obtained.

In order to prevent accidental pulling of the threads, you need to follow the rule - one stitch of the smooth surface should not be very long, i.e. go through no more than five rows.

The stitches in the second row have the same entry and exit holes as those in the first row. So it turns out a simple ornament. Serrated lines, straight lines and squares create even graphic surfaces. The interesting thing about this type of embroidery - satin stitch - is that by combining the color of the threads and the length of the stitches, patterns, figures and even entire landscapes are obtained.

Embroidery pictures - landscape photo

And now, as I promised, I bring a few more panels embroidered by hand using the straight stitch technique. The first is a picture of golden autumn. The fields are compressed, the groves are bare, the meadows are foggy and damp...

Seascape with boats. A lonely sail turns white in the blue mist of the sea. Which is not entirely true, since there are two sails, and even on each boat.

I think that this is a summer Italian landscape, greenery of trees and shrubs, fields, houses with red roofs. Impressed by the amazing conciseness of the paintings. The simpler the pattern or embroidery pattern itself, the more interesting the end result.

I can add that this kind of stencils are suitable not only for satin stitch embroidery, they can be successfully used for various types of mosaics, even with eggshells, for painting on glass, pencil drawings, and also for acrylic paintings.

If you know how to embroider with satin stitch, then you may like this method, which is closer to cutwork or hemstitch. Even in ancient times, some types of needlework that can be used to decorate clothes and interiors were too expensive, not everyone can afford. Resourceful Norwegians figured out how to imitate lace patterns.

Literally 10-15 years ago, only old women could see the hoop in their hands, and the valances embroidered by our great-great-grandmothers, pillows, towels were hidden far away in the closet.

Now the situation has changed - everyone is embroidering, both schoolgirls at home economics lessons, and young mothers guarding their little ones at the sandbox.

Show business stars and well-known sportswomen publicly declare their passion for embroidery.

Needlework shops offer ready-made kits, which include a drawing diagram, the necessary materials - canvas, threads, needles. It is fashionable to embroider, it is fashionable to decorate not only your home, but also your clothes with embroidery.

Types of embroidery

Traditional, known since ancient times, cross-stitch is the most popular. And no wonder - this is the simplest type of embroidery, there are only two directions of the thread - the lower one from corner to corner of the cell, and the upper one - crossing it.

If you understand what is at stake, you are our person, that is, a needlewoman, you have your own “hamster mink”, in which there are stocks of threads-sets-schemes under the general name “I will embroider this”.

It's about cross stitch.

But there are other embroidery options:

  • Stitch is not for everyone, experienced craftswomen take on satin stitch embroidery, resulting in amazingly beautiful voluminous colorful works.
  • Long stitch is a somewhat similar version of satin stitch embroidery, but simpler - the work is carried out in a vertical direction, the stitches are stacked next to each other, they only differ, in addition to the color of the threads, in their length: long-short, they create the effect of volume.
  • Bead embroidery - for it, ready-made bases with a pattern are usually purchased, the craftswoman puts stitches with beads on the pattern - this gives the effect of volume - the shine of the beads emphasizes, highlights the individual elements of the panel.
  • Diamond embroidery - in fact, not really embroidery - small square elements of the future picture are placed on a sticky base with a pattern.

The work also requires accuracy and painstaking work - just put the square crooked - it stuck, and it is difficult to correct the mistake.

But such pictures look spectacular - mosaic elements are usually faceted and shine, shimmering.

There are other embroidery techniques, we have named only the most popular ones. Any technique requires perseverance, painstaking, accuracy, so many take up the work, but not everyone brings it to the end.

But those who once “hooked” on embroidery are unlikely to leave it, even if the fashion for needlework passes.

How to distinguish a real needlewoman

A true embroiderer, having mastered the basics, will not stop there. She is no longer satisfied with the proposed sets and schemes - over and over again she takes on more complex works - this is how embroidered copies of famous paintings, portraits made from photographs, author's schemes appear.

Look at the photo of embroidery - it is difficult to distinguish an embroidered picture from a painted one.

Recently, embroidery on clothes has become fashionable - denim jackets are embroidered with a cross or stitch - the cross pattern on the back of such a model looks spectacular. Embroidery complements jeans, children's clothing, women's blouses, men's shirts - satin stitch embroidery on a shelf near the breast pocket looks voluminous.

Note!

Pillows embroidered by grandmothers are taken out of the closet and decorate sofas. They are complemented by modern embroidered "dumka".

Handbags embroidered with a cross and rhinestones complement the modern wardrobe of a stylish lady, and even an evening outfit can be completed with a hand-embroidered clutch.

Paintings, panels, samplers adorn the walls of apartments. A true embroiderer also treats decoration carefully: in framing workshops, such embroidered paintings are complemented by a passe-partout, a baguette, turning them into a work of art.

Passe-partout is made single, double, figured, often completed as if it were a continuation of the picture. A true needlewoman knows all the subtleties - how best to arrange embroidery.

Master class on embroidery at home

If you really want, you can achieve perfection in any kind of art, and needlework is also an art.

Japanese craftswomen embroider delightful works with the finest silk threads on silk fabric - probably nothing can compare with them. This is not embroidery - each work is a masterpiece.

Note!

Achieve if you want perfection and you. In the meantime - a few recommendations on how to make embroidery with your own hands.

To get started, choose a simple scheme - it's better to buy a set with selected threads. The icons on the diagram correspond to the thread numbers indicated in the key to the diagram.

Choose a dense canvas - on a soft, loose cross, it will not turn out even if you are just learning the basics of embroidery. To set the canvas in the hoop or not is a matter of habit. It is difficult to embroider on your hands - buy a hoop, a stretched canvas will make it possible to lay the thread evenly.

Do not make floss threads long, they will get tangled, and the embroidery will turn out ugly. Never make knots - neither at the beginning of work, nor when fixing the thread. A canvas stretched into a baguette will not be able to hide irregularities.

How to start a thread - there are various ways, choose the one that is convenient for you. Often, a small end of the thread is left on the reverse side of the work, and then, in the process of embroidery, it is passed under the threads of the crosses. And the wrong side will remain neat, and the thread will hold tight. They also fix the thread at the end of the work - under the threads.

Note!

Embroider by guiding the thread from top to bottom, applying gentle tension so that the thread does not shrink or sag.

Sew the first row in a semi-cross - going through all the cells with the necessary color. Then lay the second row on top - as a result, you get an even row of crosses. The next row is sewn in the same way. If necessary, after completing the thread of one color, take another color.

So, row after row, a masterpiece will be born from under your hands. Over time, you will master other types of seams, complicate the drawings. Create, decorate the world with your presence and creations created by your hands.
