One day in 1983, on a flight from Paris to London, a fateful meeting for fashion took place: Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas sat next to each other on soft leather business-class chairs. She is a talented actress and singer, he is the head of the Hermès fashion house, founded more than a century ago by his great-grandfather Thierry Hermes. The flight over the English Channel takes a little over an hour, but a long conversation ensued between the neighbors. During the conversation, Jane accidentally dropped her Hermès wallet, from which all its contents fell out. The perfectionist Birkin, collecting things on the floor of the plane, complained to Dumas that all the necessary documents did not fit in the leather folder. Dumas replied that, alas, he could not remake it, but he could try to realize another dream of a star actress - an ideal leather bag. Jane simply explained how she imagined her, Jean-Louis sketched out a sketch - and that was it. They later met in the workshop and Birkin saw her dream, named after her own.
The Birkin bag immediately gained incredible popularity: in the heyday of the era of ostentatious luxury of the zero, Victoria Beckham casually mentioned that she had a hundred different items kept at home. This love is understandable: each bag is made by the brand's furriers by hand in a Parisian atelier, and the process of its manufacture is very laborious - about 18 hours.
The base model costs 12,000 euros these days, but even if you have the necessary amount in your wallet, you can't just walk into the brand's boutique and walk out with a brand new Birkin in your hands. Previously, everyone who wanted to get their copy of the cult bag was put on a special waiting list, but three years ago it was liquidated ... due to the huge hype. Birkin is sometimes brought to the flagship boutiques of the brand, but as their sellers say, the bags run out on the day they arrive, and they don’t know when they will bring the next time.

The Parisian house of Hermès also owns another "personalized" bag, named after another popular actress of the 20th century - Grace Kelly. In general, everything that was connected with Grace, who later became the Princess of Monaco, was covered with a magical halo. But few people know that it was created 20 years before Kelly came into the spotlight: the classic travel bag, called sac haut à courroies, first appeared in 1930. Its author is Robert Dumas. Three creative directors have changed at the helm of Christian Dior: from Ferre, the honorary post passed to John Galliano, from him to Raf Simons, and then for the first time the cult French brand was headed by a woman - Maria Grazia Chiuri. Each of the designers had their own versions of the iconic bag, in which only a uniform and four key rings remained from the canonical Dior.
