At the beginning of the twentieth century, space fashion, unlike modern fashion, was characterized by complete unsuitability for wearing in everyday life. All the glittery suits, fantastic dresses, elaborate shoes and headgear looked like anything but clothes that could be worn off the runway.

Nowadays, any speculation about a time when flying to the moon will be as easy as a trip out of town is beautifully embodied in the creations of fashion designers. Very often retrofuturism comes into fashion. For example, mid-length pleated skirts made of metallic materials were very popular last year, which were a rather vivid reference to the space fashion of the twenties and thirties of the last century.

However, the most important time in space fashion was the sixties of the last century. This time was marked by the first manned space flight, the landing of man on the moon and the launch of satellites. These events undoubtedly had a huge impact on the culture of that time. All the most famous fashion collections of that time were devoted specifically to the space theme: “Moon Girl” and “Space Age” by designer Andre Courrège, as well as “Space Corps” by the legendary Pierre Cardin. At this time, Paco Raban became one of the fashion leaders, who presented things that were completely created from metal and plastic. Other designers did not lag behind him, who used vinyl, PVC, reflective fabrics and other materials to create their collections. Pierre Cardin in 1967 went beyond the catwalk and created not a new fashion collection of space-themed clothes, but the design of a real spacesuit for NASA.

However, it cannot be said that such a fashion was immediately accepted with a bang and began to be followed. For example, Coco Chanel called Paco Rabanne a “metallurgist” because of his love for shiny materials, and a fashionable French publication immediately dubbed all space fashion collections “pret-a-chokan”.

Another very important reflection of space fashion is moon rover boots, which are back in fashion this winter.
