Every year, on the eve of the New Year holidays, residents of many countries begin to carefully decorate their homes. Special attention is paid to the decor of homes because the atmosphere during the holidays will depend on this. Many different attributes, such as garlands, snowflakes, Christmas tree decorations, and other lovely crafts, help convey the spirit of Christmas and New Year.

An important place among such crafts is occupied by a variety of socks, which are hung above the fireplace or in another place. They are intended for gifts from Santa Claus, which all children look forward to during the winter holidays.

Lovely simplicity

In order for a real winter fairy tale to reign in the house, inspired by the snowy landscapes outside the window and the aroma of the New Year tree, you need to carefully pay attention to even the smallest things in the house. Therefore, when buying New Year's socks used for room decoration, they need to be selected in such a way that they are in harmony with the surrounding objects. After all, even such a small thing can significantly embellish or spoil the entire idea of a New Year's design.

In order for your home to be elegant for the holidays, it is not necessary to purchase too expensive decorations, because simple but beautiful crafts can also cope with the task. Thus, a real New Year's atmosphere in the home can be accessible not only to rich people, but also to families with low incomes.

For princes and princesses

In families with many children, New Year's socks for gifts are suitable not in the same color and shape, but with a significant difference. After all, kids will probably like socks with differences that take into account the preferences and hobbies of girls and boys rather than monotonous products. For example, souvenirs with bows or beads are suitable for girls, while more formal crafts are preferable for boys.

Traditionally, all New Year's socks for gifts must be signed, because otherwise Santa Claus may make a mistake with the souvenir, and this will definitely upset the child. To prevent the fabulousness of Christmas from being ruined by such an absurd mistake, parents need to try to make all their children's dreams of a winter extravaganza come true.

Unusual ideas from ordinary things

When preparing for Christmas and New Year, it is not necessary to buy New Year's socks that will be used as bags for gifts. They can be made with your own hands from any materials. In addition, they will be unique and warmed by the warmth of a mother’s hands and the love of her heart for her children.

When making a New Year's stocking for gifts with your own hands, it is not necessary to make it a copy of an existing item. A craft made up and interestingly decorated using various handicraft techniques will look much more interesting and unusual.

In fact, you can get ideas for creativity everywhere, from the things around you, and create products from the most ordinary materials. Let's look at some original ideas for making such socks below:

1. Take a small piece of tulle in white, pink or blue. Place a regular adult sock on it and trace the outline with chalk or pencil. Cut, retreating 2-3 cm from the edges, thus leaving seam allowances. Make two parts of the sock that need to be sewn together from the inside. This way we got the upper part of the future craft. Fleece or any other dense white material is suitable for lining. Next, do the same steps as before.

Then the lining sock will need to be tucked into the craft, sewn from tulle. All that remains is to process all the seams of the craft on the outside with an overcast stitch using gold or silver threads. Also, do not forget about the loop on the craft, with which it will be attached to any surface. Such a charming sock will be a surprise for all girls.

2. Prepare small pieces of white and black fabric, as well as several small white buttons. Cut and sew a sock from black fabric, as in the previous sample. At the top of the craft, make a deep V-shaped neckline on one side. Under this cutout you need to place a piece of white fabric from the inside and baste it. Then you need to make a shirt collar from a small strip of white fabric and sew it to the fabric sewn under the V-neck. Sew buttons along the shirt.

Next, you need to continue with the future jacket. You need to make lapels for it and sew it on. Finally, you need to make a small bow tie or tie and attach it to the neck of the outfit. Having completed all the steps, we get an interesting sock in the form of a tailcoat. He will certainly be appreciated by the male half of the family.

Adults believe in miracles too!

When creating New Year's socks for your children, do not forget about the adult family members. After all, in order to truly enjoy the holidays, you need to create a winter fairy tale not only for children, but also to surround moms, dads, and grandparents with New Year’s magic. On the wall or near the fireplace, there must be festive socks hanging for all family members.

You can also involve children in this type of creativity, who will probably want to make an interesting souvenir with their own hands for their loved ones. Knowing how to make a New Year's stocking for adults correctly, you can make a lot of them very quickly. There is no difficulty in this process, you just need to make a sock pattern on the selected material, then sew it and decorate it.

For people who want to sew New Year's socks themselves, handmade experts recommend following some recommendations. One of these instructions is to make crafts of various sizes, then they will look especially harmonious and cozy. It is necessary to sew a sock of a separate size for each family member, but it should not correspond to the actual size of the person’s foot. You just need to determine by eye the necessary parameters of the craft, which will smoothly descend from the largest to the smallest size. They also need to be hung in this order.

Another important aspect when sewing this type of product is its capacity. After all, they need to be sewn in such a way that gifts can be placed in them. Often many people make the same mistake: they make very beautiful things, but at the same time they are very narrow and roomy, and you cannot put even the smallest souvenir in them.

Also, when making a New Year's stocking for gifts with your own hands, do not forget about the strength of the material for sewing crafts and threads. Because if you ignore this requirement, all the work done to make the souvenir will be in vain, because the craft may not withstand the weight of the load placed in it. To prevent this from happening, carefully select all materials and check the finished product for strength before it is used for its intended purpose.

Beauty for your feet

New Year's crafts can be not only decoration, but also things that you can wear with pleasure. For example, you can make New Year's socks for the whole family, not as a craft for gifts, but as a thing that will warm your feet. We are not talking about the usual knitted items, but about funny socks that can be worn instead of indoor slippers.

These New Year's socks on your feet must look original. But sewing does not have to be too complicated, because children should be able to make them as New Year gifts for their parents and grandparents.

An interesting idea is that they are made from fleece. To do this, you need to take a piece of such material and draw the shape of socks on it, then sew the parts together. The originality of such a craft lies in its decoration. And you can use a lot of ways to do this. For example, cut out snowflakes from the same material of a different color and sew them on the products. Such snowflakes can be pre-stitched around the edges with silver threads.

Strictness is not a hindrance to the holiday

Sometimes it happens that fathers, grandfathers and husbands are very strict and do not accept various “cute” gifts. Therefore, they will not appreciate New Year’s socks on their feet decorated with various decorative items as a useful thing.

In order to please such individuals, you can resort to little tricks by making real New Year's men's socks for them from interesting materials. For example, such a product made of khaki fabric will certainly appeal to strong and strong-willed men.

Hanging New Year's (Christmas) socks by the fireplace on the eve of the winter holidays is a tradition, although not Russian, but so cute! Therefore, if your children like the Christmas stocking as much as mine, we take fabric and thread with a needle and get to work! The degree of a child’s participation in joint creativity can be easily determined by his age and skills: if he knows how to use scissors, he can cut out a workpiece, if he has learned/learned how to use a needle, he can take up sewing, and if for now he can only watch, then instruct the child to give you the details , threads and more. Well, let's try to make a New Year's stocking for gifts with our own hands.

New Year's sock: pattern and necessary materials

You will need the following materials:

  • a piece of red fabric (about 1 m by 1 m, in this case gabardine);
  • fabric of any color for the lining (I have lining silk);
  • padding polyester;
  • cardboard;
  • a piece of green felt (usually sold in A4 sheets, one sheet is enough);
  • decor (we have 2 bells, ribbons, beads);
  • a small piece of thin elastic;
  • scissors.

To begin, draw the initial pattern of our sock on cardboard and cut it out.

Then, based on the resulting pattern, we make two patterns each from padding polyester, gabardine and lining silk. You should get six identical templates, two each from the same material.

How to sew a New Year's (Christmas) sock: stages of work

Now we take one pattern of each type and put them together.

This is one side of our future sock. We baste and sew by machine or by hand. We do the same with the rest of the patterns. Then we sew both sides inside out and turn them inside out.

Now we take felt and cut out two small strips along the width of the neck of the sock for the sides (we got 15 cm in length and 4 cm in width). Carefully sew them with one edge inside the sock. This is how you get a sock with a turn-up. Instead of felt, you can use pieces of fur, if available.

The sock for New Year's gifts is almost ready. You can decorate it and sew on a loop.

From the leftover felt we cut out traditional Christmas holly leaves (2-4 pieces) and sew them in the middle of the sock.

Then we fold the checkered ribbon into a bow and secure it to the leaves, and on top you can attach a ready-made red or white bow. A pair of bells and silver beads will complete the composition.

On New Year's Day it is customary to place gifts under the tree. However, after the New Year (and for Catholics, on the contrary, back in December), a series of Christmas holidays begins, and in order to fully enjoy their atmosphere, you can borrow the interesting Western custom of hiding gifts in a Christmas stocking.

In Europe and the USA, on Christmas Eve, parents decorate the fireplace with decorative socks, stockings and boots, and in the morning children find gifts in them. It seems that this tradition was invented just as another fun way to present long-awaited toys and sweets. But, in fact, the custom of hiding gifts in Christmas stockings has a long and educational history.

Today, “House of Dreams” invites its readers to plunge into a fairy tale and learn about the long-standing tradition, thanks to which it is customary for many families to hang out socks, stockings and boots on Christmas night. In addition, you will learn how and from what you can make such socks and where to hang them. Read, see photos of Christmas socks and boots, get inspired and decorate your home!

How Christmas socks came to be

Socks were first used for Christmas gifts in America and Western Europe. As you know, in the fairy tales of these countries it is believed that Santa Claus enters the houses of obedient children through the chimney. However, why did he start using hosiery as gift wrapping? It turns out there is an interesting explanation for this.

One of the legends says that once upon a time in a small English town there lived a widower whose only wealth was his three daughters. The man was worried that due to poverty he would not be able to provide his daughters with a decent dowry, and no one would marry them. On Christmas Eve, a widower shared his sorrows with a friend. By a happy coincidence, the man’s complaint was heard by Santa Claus himself, who decided to help the disadvantaged family. Santa Claus understood that the widower's pride and modesty would not allow him to take money from him, so he decided to present the man's daughters with gold coins as a Christmas gift.

When night fell, Santa Claus, as usual, came down the chimney into the widower's house. However, instead of Christmas decorations and a festively decorated tree in the girls’ room, he saw only washed socks and stockings hanging on the fireplace. Santa Claus had no choice but to put the gold coins there. In the morning, when the girls woke up and found precious gifts, they shared such good news with their friends and neighbors, and gradually the entire population of the town learned about this Christmas story. Since then, on a festive night, people began to hang stockings and socks on fireplaces, in the hope that Santa Claus would also make them happy with his gifts.

How to make decorative Christmas socks or boots

Of course, everyone understands that the history of the origin of Christmas socks is just a beautiful pre-holiday fairy tale, but this method of giving gifts has still not lost its relevance, largely due to the fact that these products become a bright element of holiday decor.

You can easily make a Christmas stocking, sock or boot yourself, and in several ways. Most often, this element of holiday decor is made of felt, any thick fabric or woolen threads.

To sew a Christmas stocking from felt or fabric, you first need to draw on cardboard the shape of the future product - a pattern. The size of the sock depends on the size of the gifts. If desired, you can even make miniature products that will be an excellent decoration for the New Year tree or other decorative compositions.

Next, using the finished pattern, two parts of the future boot are cut out on felt or fabric. After this, the cut material is tightly sewn together along the edges from the wrong side, and turned outward.

In order for the sock to become a truly festive decorative element, it will need to be further decorated. For example, the top of the product can be decorated with white fluffy fur, and then the sock will look like a Santa Claus boot. Instead of fur, you can also use shining rain, satin ribbons, bows, lace or bells.

DIY Christmas boots

Large Christmas boots are often decorated with additional details. For example, the product can be decorated with figures cut out of felt - in the form of snowflakes, snowmen, Santa Claus, deer, etc. In addition, socks made from fabrics of different colors look very beautiful. If you are making socks for several children, embroider the initials of the gift recipients on them so the little ones know that Santa Claus is not neglecting anyone.

DIY Christmas socks

If you love to knit, you can definitely make a knitted Christmas boot. They are made in almost the same way as regular knitted socks. It is only advisable to make them as dense as possible, so choose the thickest threads possible.

If desired, the boot can be made voluminous. To do this, cut out the base-sole from thick cardboard and sew it inside the sock. And, of course, the finished boot should be decorated with a bright edge. However, instead of the edge, you can also use beautiful decorative cuffs. Just don’t forget to attach a small loop at the top of the sock to hang it from.

Where to hang a Christmas stocking

Traditionally, these socks are hung along the mantelpiece. However, don't be discouraged if your home doesn't have fireplace, because Christmas socks are intended for giving gifts and decorating the interior, so you can hang them anywhere: near the child’s bed, above the door, on the wall, on the window frame, etc.

If you have a few Christmas stockings, you can use them to create a garland of sorts. To do this, just attach the socks to a suitable thread or decorative beads, and then hang them along the wall, on the closet door, on stair railings etc.

Small socks can be hung directly on the Christmas tree, and then they will become not just a beautiful container for gifts, but also an original holiday decoration Christmas tree.

DIY CHRISTMAS SOCK

Materials for a Christmas stocking

To sew a New Year's stocking for a gift you will need:

& A piece of fleece measuring 40x40 cm;
& For the sock cuff, a piece of any fabric 15x20 cm;
& Ribbon for loop;
& Non-woven fabric with adhesive backing.

To decorate a New Year's stocking

& A pair of black beads;
& A dozen sequins and glass beads;
& Red and white acrylic paint;
& Gold ribbon 10cm.

CHRISTMAS SOCK PATTERN

To make a Christmas stocking pattern, take any sock as a sample, place it on the fabric and trace it with chalk, leaving seam allowances. If the sock is greatly increased in size, then it will be even better, in this case you can put a larger gift in it. This will not spoil the appearance, and the Christmas stocking for a gift will become a Christmas boot.

TECHNIQUES FOR MAKING A CHRISTMAS SOCK

Cut out the traced part of the Christmas sock and apply it, face to face, to the second piece of fabric - trace and cut out the second part of the sock. Sew the cut pieces together and turn them right side out.

Cut out circles for the snowman from non-woven fabric. Use any suitable round objects or compass for the template. I used a large button, a spool of thread and a bobbin from a sewing machine. For the body, cut out three circles of different sizes and two small circles to imitate arms.

Place the circles on a snowman-shaped Christmas sock, adhesive side to the fabric. For the head, cut out a bucket. Cover the whole thing with newsprint and iron it with a hot iron so that the snowman parts stick to the sock. Take red and white acrylic paints and paint the snowman. Wait for the paint to dry and use sequins and glass beads to embroider a broom for the snowman on your New Year's stocking. Sew beads instead of eyes, draw a mouth and nose with acrylic paint.

For the cuff, cut out a rectangle. You can make it any width, but not less than 7-8 cm, the length of the rectangle should be equal to the circumference of the sock at the top, add 2 cm to the seam. Sew the blanks and press them along the seams. Sew the resulting ring to the boot, turn the cuff up, fold it over and sew its second edge inside, first folding the end of the fabric.
