CRAFT UNDERWEAR - FIRST COAT

BASE LAYER: VENTILATING AND WATER REMOVAL

Thermal underwear CRAFT is a functional underwear that is worn on the naked body. The main function of thermal underwear is to regulate body temperature by transporting moisture to the outside or to the next layer of clothing. This is achieved through a special weaving of synthetic fibers that do not absorb moisture and are able to effectively evaporate it from their surface.

In order to get the best effect from the use of CRAFT thermal underwear, it must be combined with other layers of functional clothing. For optimal performance and comfort, each layer complements the others and is equally important, whatever the weather.

Many people believe that if you buy CRAFT thermal underwear, it will warm you. This is a misconception! In fact, it can retain useful heat, thanks to special weaving technologies, mixing fibers of different composition, hollow thread and much more. But the wrong choice of the second layer greatly reduces the functionality of the thermal underwear.

It is the second layer of clothing (fleece, sweatshirts, pullovers) that performs the main function of warming the body (preserving useful heat). The third layer (jackets, pants) protects against rain and wind. Clothing of the second and third layers should be breathable and warm the body in cold weather. Only in this case you will get the maximum effect from using thermal underwear.

CRAFT thermal underwear is divided into 7 collections, which differ from each other in the degree of application and functionality:

TEMPERATURE AND INTENSITY WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

When creating CRAFT thermal underwear lines, we always start with determining the temperature and intensity at which the given garment is used. The special temperature scale and intensity level combine to form the basis for the continuation of the simulation process. As a result, we offer CRAFT thermal underwear collections with their own unique characteristics, which together suit any weather and intensity. Refer to the graph to see which collection is best for a given weather condition.

Collection - functional summer underwear. Keeps your body fresh and comfortable when exercising in the gym or outdoors in summer, and is also ideal for everyday wear. Excellent cooling effect and ergonomic fit for freedom of movement when exercising in warm and hot weather.

The collection is probably the most versatile CRAFT thermal underwear on the market. It can be used for almost any physical activity in good or bad conditions. Cycling, running, cross-country skiing, soccer, horse riding, walking and rowing are just a few examples of activities for which CRAFT thermal underwear works great. The collection also includes Windstopper ® for windy conditions.

The collection is made of a thin, lightweight and resilient material, the channels of which are fastened into two high-tech polyester Hexa-fibers, which enhance the transport of moisture and cool the body. On the outside, the hollow fiber betrays insulation and also transports moisture to the next layer (insulating).

Collection - when it's cold outside and you want to go for a walk, go skiing, go fishing, then putting on this CRAFT thermal underwear, you can be sure that it will not freeze. KEEP WARM - the warmest collection. The WARM fabric is created using a three-dimensional weaving technique. Zones of different density and texture take into account temperature changes in different parts of the human body.

Today, only the "lazy" does not produce thermal underwear. The most interesting question is how is this set of underwear made of thin material costing from 1 to 15 thousand rubles. can provide a comfortable stay for a person in any weather and any situation? If the packaging says "-5C ...- 30C", then this does not mean that you can be outdoors only in this thermal underwear at this temperature !? How can manufacturers take into account what else a person wears as a 2-3-4 layer in order to declare such temperature characteristics?
Thermal underwear includes socks, underpants, T-shirts with long and short sleeves, balaclava. Modern thermal underwear has already been appreciated by people whose professional activities or hobbies are associated with everyday being in nature during the cold period. These experts will not advise you badly.

At the beginning, a little theory.
Good thermal underwear serves two important functions: it wicks away sweat quickly and keeps you warm.
Sweat is wicked away due to the structure of synthetic fibers and the structure of the fabric. The removal of moisture by the canvases is based on the capillary effect. Sweat passes through the synthetic fabric and does not linger in it. Further, it either evaporates or is absorbed into the layer of outerwear. It is necessary to understand that underwear does not warm, but only retains the heat that a person emits. Wool keeps warm best of all, then cotton and viscose, then synthetics. Fleece or micro-nap synthetic fabric is almost equivalent in quality to a thinner wool layer. You cannot judge the performance of thermal underwear by first impression.

There are several classifications of thermal underwear, but I like the following two:
1. By composition:
- fully synthetic (propylpropylene, polyamide, polyester, elastane, artificial cellulose fibers and their combinations). Polypropylene wicks away moisture and is expensive, and polyester adds durability to the product. Such synthetics dries quickly even on the body, does not form unnecessary folds, and is easy to clean.
- completely natural (wool of merino sheep, camel wool, cashmere, cotton, natural silk and their combinations)
- mixed synthetic fibers with natural fibers in various proportions. Someone considers this option to be optimal. since the positive properties of two different materials are combined. But the percentage is important here.

2. By type of use:
- statics (winter fishing, slow hunting, some types of work in geodesy, construction, etc.)
- dynamics (all active sports, almost all tourism, walking hunting, city and suburbs with minor reservations)
- mixed activity. This is a stumbling block for many. If there is a big minus on the street, then beginners use the thickest and warmest thermal underwear made of microfleece or wool, forgetting that when moving, all layers may not cope with the heat dissipation of the body, and then "little hell" begins.

My main requirements for thermal underwear: to be comfortable in it, the material is pleasant to the skin, tags and seams never made themselves felt. It is also very good when the manufacturer makes a large dimensional grid so that everyone can choose the right size for themselves.
(I inserted screenshots of the sites, because in the modern world, customer care begins with the Internet)

15. Jahti Jakt
Finnish manufacturer of hunting clothing, footwear and equipment since the 1980s. That's why I like the Scandinavian peoples of the manufacturers, it's the brevity of their clothes and a well-founded experience of use.
A little informative information from the site: "Ordinary underwear gets wet when sweating due to which the thermal insulation properties deteriorate. And it's just unpleasant. Thermal underwear is devoid of this flaw: the fabric from which the thermal underwear is made consists of at least two layers, one of which is used for removal of moisture on the outer surface of clothing. Therefore, thermal underwear always remains dry and pleasant on the body. "
Jahti Jakt offers one T-shirt in three camouflage colors for 1,700 rubles. with lining "SCENTECH" (silver particles in threads) and eight sets from 2.0 to 5.5 thousand rubles. (100% Polyester)

For dyeing wool, the purest water and safe dyes that have passed rigorous testing are used.
There are four collections for men: Design Wool, Black Wool, SummerWool and Seamless.
The new JanusPro series includes four collections: Antiflame Regular Wool from 50% merino and 50% ProtexM; Antiflame Extra from 80% merino and 20% ProtexM; Antiflame Plus from 85% merino and 15% ProtexM; Antiflame Regular Cotton made from 60% ProtexM and 40% cotton.

(because everything didn't fit)

Thermal underwear is one of the main elements in clothing for sports and outdoor activities, designed to control your heat transfer. On how correctly the thermal underwear is selected, it largely depends on how comfortable you will be during sports, and therefore what results you can achieve.

Together with an expert from AlpIndustria Yura Serebryakov we figure out how to choose thermal underwear that suits your conditions.

The principle of layering in clothing

In clothing for sports and outdoor activities, it is customary to adhere to the principle of layering, or, in other words, the concept of three layers. Thermal underwear is the first, base layer and is designed to control heat transfer. Thermal underwear should fit snugly to the body (it is often called a second skin) in order to ensure correct thermoregulation, but at the same time not squeeze muscles and not restrict movement. Thermal underwear is followed by a second, middle layer of clothing designed to keep warm, for example, a fleece or a down sweater. Then comes the third, outer layer, which also removes excess moisture outside, allows the body to breathe under clothing and protects from external influences, precipitation and wind. For example, a jacket with a Gore-Tex membrane.

In order for the equipment to work correctly and create comfortable conditions, and not cause inconvenience, you must carefully select each layer and clearly understand for what tasks and conditions you choose clothes. Let's start by choosing a base.

What is thermal underwear, and what is it intended for

The main function of thermal underwear is to control heat exchange by removing moisture. When you sweat during intense movement, thermal underwear does not accumulate sweat in itself, but removes excess moisture from the body and does not allow you to "cook" under clothes. If you find yourself in cold conditions and / or not actively moving, thermal underwear helps keep you warm. It is this functionality that distinguishes specially designed thermal underwear from ordinary cotton and synthetic clothing.

For the manufacture of thermal underwear, technological synthetic fibers, high-quality soft wool, most often merino wool, or a combination of these materials are used. Cutting thermal underwear often involves combining materials with different composition, density and properties (ventilation, insulation, muscle support) in different zones.

Composition: thermal underwear made of wool, synthetics and combined materials

Wool, in general, has better thermal insulation properties than synthetics, but absorbs moisture more actively. Under intense loads (jogging, freeriding) this will become a tangible disadvantage: a person sweats a lot, thermal underwear absorbs a large amount of moisture, which does not have time to be taken out and lingers in clothes - a person begins to "cook" and experience discomfort. Therefore, for intense loads, it is preferable to choose synthetic thermal underwear, which will properly remove moisture and control heat transfer, preventing overheating and hypothermia. If you are faced with less intense loads, passive rest, being in very low temperatures, you are looking for thermal underwear for the city or you are freezing quickly, give preference to a base layer made of wool, with its good thermal insulation properties.

Please note that in some cases, woolen thermal underwear can cause irritation, especially on sensitive baby skin. Therefore, we recommend that adults try on clothes before buying, and for children, choose synthetic models.

Thermal underwear for men, women and children

In general, women's and men's thermal underwear does not differ much from each other. The cut of specialized female models takes into account the peculiarities of the female figure and, since girls usually feel more cold, has more insulated zones.

For the manufacture of children's thermal underwear, synthetics are often used, because wool can cause discomfort to the sensitive skin of a child. As a rule, the main task of children's thermal underwear is not to remove moisture, but to keep warm, so it is usually denser than "adult" models.

In general, the models of thermal underwear differ from each other in composition, in the presence of compression properties, in the recommended temperature regime and in design features. When choosing, you should be guided by several points:

  1. Exercise intensity / high, medium or low activity
  2. Temperature Range
  3. Your individual cold tolerance

Thermal underwear temperature range

As a rule, manufacturers indicate the recommended temperature regime and preferred activities in the name or description of the product. For example, the Swiss brand Odlo divides its models of thermal underwear into several lines:

  • Ultra-lightweight thermal underwear from the Cool line is designed for the hottest weather
  • Models marked Light are designed for summer sports, they are lightweight clothing made from thin fabric, the main task of which is to wick moisture away from the body
  • Warm - insulated thermal underwear for cold weather and winter sports
  • Models marked X-Warm are designed for the coldest temperatures

The choice of thermal underwear depending on the activity and intensity of the load

First of all, when choosing thermal underwear, you should focus on the degree of activity: whether it will be high, with intense constant loads (freeride, trail running), medium (mountaineering, hiking) or low (walking in the city, fishing). The main task of thermal underwear for outdoor activities and sports is to control heat exchange due to the timely removal of moisture from the body in order to prevent overheating or hypothermia. With low activity, sweating is less, so the main task of thermal underwear for passive rest is to keep warm.

For low activity it is recommended to choose thermal underwear made of wool, for example, Bergans. It retains heat better than synthetics and does not lose its properties over time, is well suited for everyday wear. Synthetic thermal underwear is also worth considering. Its advantages are density, good moisture removal and ease of maintenance.

Thermal underwear for outdoor activities and sports can be divided into compression and non-compression. Compression provides support for the muscles, stimulates blood circulation - the muscles work correctly and are not overloaded. Such underwear usually has a zonal design (X-Bionic, The North Face). Each area of clothing is responsible for a specific process: improved moisture removal (under the arms and in the abdomen), increased heat retention (in the chest, lower back, shoulders), etc. Compression creates discomfort at low activity. High-activity non-compression thermal underwear is usually composed of synthetics (Odlo, Arcteryx, The North Face) or synthetic and wool blend (Peak Performance) and works best when you move. By the way, as a basic, universal thermal underwear (or, if you are buying thermal underwear for the first time), the Peak Performance model is almost ideal: in areas with increased perspiration, synthetics are used with its good moisture-wicking properties, and in areas that freeze faster than others, wool is used with its the ability to keep warm.

Generally, for hiking, trekking and mountaineering suitable for medium or high density thermal underwear, with good breathability and without compression. You can take two sets for the ascent: one for the ascent / assault, the second, more insulated, for changing at the base camp (or as a backup option). For winter mountaineering and high-altitude ascents, as well as for winter expeditions, you can consider Power Stretch thermal underwear: it is designed for low temperatures and can even be used as a middle layer.

For downhill skiing, on prepared slopes or off-piste, and trail running and running training, it is worth choosing a compression thermal underwear. It will support the muscles and stimulate blood circulation, which is important with constant movement and intense exertion. For these sports, high levels of moisture management and breathability are also important. Thermal underwear for winter sports, as a rule, has a zonal design - a combination of zones with insulation (for example, in the area of the shoulders, chest and lower back), reinforcement (for example, in places of increased wear, in the area of the elbows) and ventilation zones (in places of increased sweating). Base layer for summer activities will have a lower density in order to accelerate the removal of moisture from the body.

Manufacturers regularly develop models for specific sports: taking into account the specifics of loads, their average intensity, as well as seasonality. However, choosing thermal underwear is a very individual process. It depends on your personal characteristics (how you tolerate the cold), your activity in a particular sport. Someone in -10 ° C in the city is cold even in Power Stretch thermal underwear and a puff, for others a model with medium insulation will be enough for a harsh winter expedition. Someone prefers to have a separate set of thermal underwear for each type of activity, another will choose 1-2 of the most universal sets for all cases.

There are also some general rules for the care of thermal underwear. The base layer is in contact with the skin, actively absorbs sweat and odors and therefore needs regular care:

    • Ventilate your thermal underwear outdoors after each workout to avoid the build-up of unpleasant odors.
    • Wash by hand or machine in a delicate cycle up to 30 ° C.
    • When machine washable, it is recommended to wash thermal underwear with clothes of similar colors and do not fill the machine to capacity.
    • Better yet, collect thermal underwear together and wash separately from all other items.
    • If you are going to wash thermal underwear with all the rest of your clothes, it is better to set aside items with zippers, buckles and Velcro so that they do not damage the base layer and leave no snags during the wash process. You can also use a special mesh bag for washing laundry.
    • If possible, use a mild detergent, liquid rather than powder.
    • Rinse thermal underwear thoroughly after washing.
    • It is not recommended to use fabric softener, chlorine-containing products, bleaches, antistatic agents, or to iron thermal underwear.

Even not the most friendly winter weather is not at all a reason to refuse long walks, active games and sports activities in the fresh air, contrary to popular belief. You just need to dress properly. You can buy a jacket or down jacket from the most popular brand that will fit the child exactly, but will not be able to warm it up in cold weather. After all, it is worth remembering about the clothes under the jacket - a warm, non-blown layer, which also “breathes” and does not allow the child to sweat. What will please us with high technologies that have found application in the field of children's clothing for cold weather?

The composition of thermal underwear

By thermal underwear of the first layer, we mean sets of "jacket with pants", sweaters, turtlenecks, tights and socks. More precisely, the thermal underwear of the first layer is that which directly adjoins the child's body. It can be of several types, depending on the composition:

  • 100% polyester or wool plus polyester;
  • wool plus polyester plus cotton;
  • 100% wool or cashmere plus silk.

Thermal underwear made of 100% polyester is designed mainly to wick moisture away from the child's body. Such kits do not have any "warming" functions. Used for active sports like skiing, skating. It is also suitable for active winter games, downhill skiing. It is good to dress it for very mobile children, if your baby does not stand still for a minute, then such brands of thermal underwear as Didrikson's, Poivre Blanc, Huppa, Craft, Spyder will suit you perfectly. These underwear will keep your child from sweating. Do not forget that it only works correctly when used with membrane winter clothing sets.

The most common type of thermal underwear is wool plus polyester.
In this case, wool acts as a heating agent, while polyester wicks moisture away from the body. That is, if the child was running around and sweating, then the moisture will not remain on the body, but will be removed to the next layer. Thus, the baby will not freeze when he gets tired and switches to less active games.

The amount of wool and polyester in the composition may vary. The more wool, the warmer the linen. Various types of wool are also used in the manufacture. Sheep's wool is most often found, as in the brand Brubeck and some models Norveg, or merino wool Norveg, Janus. Merino wool is considered to be hypoallergenic and less prickly. A type of thermal underwear in this family is wool with the addition of polyester and cotton from the brand Melton, it is intended for very sensitive baby skin. A small amount of cotton is added to the inner layer of such underwear in order not to irritate the baby's skin, and it is not prickly at all.

Advantages of membrane thermal underwear and how to wear it correctly

Thermal underwear made of wool and polyester can be used with both membrane outerwear and down garments. When used with downy products, it is better to choose thermal underwear with a maximum wool content, it is warmer, but the moisture removal function will still not work. Thermal underwear made of 100% wool is very warm, but it cannot be used with membrane outerwear, since the function of the membrane is to remove moisture, and such underwear does not remove moisture. Such underwear is mainly suitable for lovers of natural materials and down.

However, there are exceptions to any rule. There are two natural materials that are moisture permeable: silk and cashmere. Cashmere is the undercoat of a mountain goat, i.e. also wool. This material is absolutely hypoallergenic, very soft and thornless. Brand nameNorveg makes cashmere sweaters and cashmere-silk thermal sets. Such things are put on directly on the child's body, they can be used for outdoor games and winter sports, wearing under membrane winter clothes. They can also be worn under down clothes. The disadvantages of such linen are the high price and difficult care - only dry cleaning.

Some manufacturers such as Nano , Poivre blanc and Deux par Deux, for some models, membrane fabrics are covered with a special impregnation of the Teflon type - to enhance the indicators of waterproofness and windproofness. Water rolls off such fabrics quickly without being absorbed. Separately, you need to talk about thermosocks. In modern children's shoes, a membrane is used, which allows the shoes not to get wet, and at the same time the feet of your child do not sweat. Thermosocks for membrane shoes must necessarily contain polyester to wick moisture away from the feet, otherwise the child's sweaty feet will freeze and the baby may get sick.

When wearing shoes made from natural materials, thermal socks with a high wool content can be used to keep warm. Also, such socks are used for rubber boots, where the function of removing moisture is not very needed. Sock brands Norveg, Janus make children's socks for any footwear. And in brands Guahoo and Poivre Blanc, in addition, there are also extended models of children's thermal socks for winter sports.

The second layer is for cold weather

At temperatures below -10 degrees, it is recommended to wear a second layer of thermal underwear, which is worn directly on the first. This layer traditionally consists of a blouse and pants, the composition is 100% polyester or, as everyone calls it, fleece. Fleece sets are available from all manufacturers of membrane outerwear, Huppa, Reima, Didrickson's, Lassie, Kerry, Poivre Blanc, Deux par Deux, Luhta, Icepeak. Here it is important to observe the 2-layer rule and not put anything else on the child in order to ensure the correct functioning of the membrane clothing.

How to care?

For lovers of down clothes, you can use both fleece and blouses and pants made of natural materials for the second layer. Caring for baby thermal underwear is quite simple. Polyester linen can be washed in a washing machine at a temperature not exceeding 40 ° C, using ordinary detergents. Wool-containing laundry must be washed in a special wool program and a woolen detergent used, or the laundry can be washed by hand.

A new collection of demi-season and winter clothing and footwear for children usually appears in catalogs of online stores in September, and sometimes even earlier - in July or August. To meet the cold fully armed, take care of the selection and purchase of children's goods for autumn and winter right now - before the onset of excitement and price increases for the season.
