To buy overhead door hinges without inserts. Butterfly hinges for interior doors

TERMINOLOGICAL KITCHEN

"Overhead hinges", "mortiseless awnings", "butterflies" - as soon as they do not call this type of door hardware. Surely these are not the only options, so let's explain: in this article we are talking about door card hinges that do not require insertion into the canvas and the rack of the box. This is how they look:

MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION

Is always economy class. They were originally conceived as a budget alternative to classic buttonholes. Therefore, they are stamped from structural steel, because steel is the most obvious choice when you need "cheap and cheerful".

Structurally, such hinges are two halves (cards, plates) on a rotating axis with two bearings. The smaller (inner) card is screwed to the canvas, and the larger (outer) card is screwed to the box. When the door is closed, one enters the other, forming a single plane.

WHAT LOAD DO OVERLAY HINGES WITHDRAW?

Up to 30 kg for two butterflies 100 mm (4 ″); up to 40-45 kg for three. This is noticeably less than that of classic hinges. Now we will explain why this is so.

Even if you do not take into account the installation method, it is immediately clear: butterflies and mortise awnings are very different.

Photo: Palladium hinges of the same size (100 mm) and thickness (2.5 mm)

Estimate the difference in card sizes and hole locations. It is already obvious that the bearing capacity of the "butterflies" should be less. The way it is. Moreover, the mortise hinge sits in the sample, which takes up a significant part of the load. Butterfly canopies have no sample, and four self-tapping screws are blown out for everything.

Hence the very same butterflies 30 kg instead of 80-90 kg, as in the mortise loops. In fact, a load capacity of 30 kg is decent. All frame-panel canvases with honeycomb filling will fit here (such doors are also called "lightweight", "cardboard", "hollow"). So that you understand: cardboard doors for 1000 rubles from a hypermarket or "Canadians" popular in Russia weigh on average 10-12 kg.

PROS AND CONS OF OVERLAY CARD HINGES

(+) Simple installation

Hinges without a tie-in are conceived so that they can be installed by any humanitarian without overpaying to the master. With them, you do not need a chisel, a milling cutter, and even more so some templates there. Only a screwdriver or screwdriver with a drill and 10 minutes of time.

(+) Low price

Steel overhead hinges are 1.5-2 times cheaper than steel mortise hinges. For example, our "butterflies" cost from 77 rubles, and classic universal awnings - from 122 rubles. What's the catch? And there is no catch. It is just that the production of one "butterfly" takes ~ 1.5 times less metal than the production of one cut-in loop.

(+) Universal

Suitable for wooden interior doors that open in any direction. You can buy blindly.

(+) Integrity of canvas and box

In particular, the absence of sampling allows the canvas to be moved to the other side, turning the right door into the left one, and the left one into the right one.

(-) For light doors only

(-) Risk of backlash and geometry errors

First of all - because of the design features, manufacturing by stamping and poor machinability of steel. If you are unlucky, you may come across a specimen with uneven maps, rough countersink holes and 2 mm or more backlash in the bearing area. Of course, mortise awnings also sin with this, but overheads are still more common.

(-) Fixed

If you want to remove the door to bring in the sofa, or move the canvas to the other side, please unscrew the screws first.

(-) More noticeable than other loops

"Butterflies" are not flush, so that when the door is open, the look behind them, no-no, will catch on. This is not critical for everyone. But if you already decided to buy overhead hinges without a tie-in, then such little things should be taken into account.

DIMENSIONS OF BUTTERFLY HINGES FOR INTERIOR DOORS

The standard is 100 x 75 x 2.5 mm, such models are also called "hundreds", "fours", "4 inches". Universal hinges without a tie-in of this type can be ordered from us. The photo above shows a drawing with all dimensions using our model Palladium 2BB-100 (K) as an example.

Occasionally there are 5 "awnings: 125 x 75 x 2.5 mm (or 125 x 75 x 3). We do not release such - we do not see the point. The extra 5 mm will only inflate the price tag, but will not provide a serious increase in carrying capacity. Even if they did, it would only increase the load on the screws, and they are already having a hard time.

HOW TO INSTALL THE BUTTERFLY HINGES ON THE INTERIOR DOOR

You will need: door leaf, hinges (2 pcs.), Tape measure, pencil, drill and screwdriver.

It is desirable, but not necessary: an awl.

Time: up to 10 minutes.

DIY installation instructions for butterfly overhead door hinges

1. Mark two points on the end of the canvas: one 20-30 cm from the bottom edge, the second 20-25 cm from the top. Butterflies should be located at this distance from the bottom and top of the door.

3. Drill along the hole marks with a 2.5 mm drill. Screw the screws into them.

4.Fold the loop and check if the large half fits snugly against the butt end. If it leaves somewhere, the door will "play" without closing to the end. This can be clearly seen in the photo:

The problem is solved by placing pieces of cardboard under the part of the loop that is tightly adjacent to the end. Then it will rise slightly on one side and align on the other, and the cards will be in the same plane.

5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the second butterfly.

6. Mark the location of the hinges on the door frame post.

7. Make marks for the holes for the self-tapping screws on the large half of the hinge.

8.Drill the holes with a 2.5mm drill bit.

9. Screw in the self-tapping screws, fixing the cover hinge. Ready!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON BUTTERFLY HINGES

"Are there overhead hinges for interior doors with a rebate (quarter)?"

Yes. These butterflies have corner maps.

“You write that the material of the overhead hinges is steel. But in online stores I often see: "butterfly brass hinges" "

With a probability of 99%, this is a designation of a color, not a material. In general, brass "butterflies" are nonsense, in the gallery of paradoxes they would be on a par with elite margarine and cheap Bentley. This is because butterflies are an economy in the flesh, and brass, on the contrary, greatly increases the cost of accessories, raising its premium segment.

“I installed overhead hinges - the door pulls, it springs, not closing to the end. What's wrong?"

Most likely, the looped cards are not in the same plane. It is treated by inserting strips of cardboard (see paragraph 4 of the instructions for installing butterfly loops). It also happens if the screws are screwed in obliquely. Then, when the door is closed, they can touch with a hat that part of the hinge that is attached to the box. Well, the very obvious reason: butterflies can be screwed in not coaxially to each other.

"Is it true that hinged doors sag inexorably without a cut-in?"

If the door is a typical "dummy" weighing 10-18 kg, which are in 80% of apartments, and the hinges are straight and screwed with straight hands, then NOTHING will sag. Naturally, provided that the door is not thrown open with a foot and is not used as a carousel or wall bars. If the weight of the door is close to the critical 25-30 kg, then you can play it safe and take a larger gap between the door leaf and the frame. Let's say 7 mm.

“Butterfly door awnings have only two bearings. Will not the canvas go tight and creak? "

The complete set of interior doors is not complete without the appropriate fittings. Along with handles, chains, eyes and various inserts, manufacturers attach loops to the sets. Perhaps this is the main element of the door set, on which the quality of fixing the canvas in the opening depends. Usually, traditional models of hinges are used, the device of which involves cutting into the array - for this a special groove is formed.

The development of technological methods for the manufacture and installation of doors has led to the development of a butterfly hinge, which does not require a tie-in. The new fittings also have other fundamental differences, which are characterized by both pluses and minuses. Correct installation will preserve the advantages and minimize the disadvantages of the finished door structure.

Design features

The main difference between butterfly hinges, which also affects the features of installation with further operation, is the adherence to the door surface. Such fittings do not require the creation of grooves for insertion - the loop card is applied to the surface and also twisted. The sides of the fastening are arranged in such a way that when the doors are closed, one part is built into the other, which is the reason for the name "butterfly". The number of self-tapping screws varies depending on the set, but on average corresponds to the classic sets of mortise hinges.

Installation process

To understand how to install the butterfly loop correctly, you need to take a closer look at its design. The technology for installing overhead models, as noted above, is due to the specifics of their work. The absence of the need to form grooves is a significant advantage of such hinges, otherwise the installation process follows the usual method.

First, the location of the loops is marked. It is advisable to apply them with the inside, and then fix the drilling points. The gap from the edges of the canvas should be at least 200 mm - the average offset not only for the butterfly hinge, but also for conventional versions of this hardware. Then neat holes are made for self-tapping screws, which are usually supplied with hinges. The final touch will be the direct screwing of the sides of the "butterfly" to the canvas.

Installation nuances

The external ease of the installation process and in particular the absence of the need to create niches in the array captivates many. But all the advantages that the butterfly have, this is where it ends. Only after installation can you assess how ambiguous such fittings are.

The fact is that it is possible to obtain the proper effect from the use of hinges without a tie-in only if the installation is flawless. Compared to traditional models, butterflies do not provide a wide field for revision. Firstly, the sides must fold perfectly, otherwise an unevenness will form - the door will spring or, at least, fit loosely. Secondly, you will have to come to terms with a small gap, which, of course, is formed from protruding looped cards. And another unpleasant moment, which also characterizes butterfly door hinges and the structure without a tie-in, as such, is the impossibility of removing it without unscrewing the screws.

How do I resolve errors?

It is impossible to get rid of all the listed consequences of using such original loops, however, it is possible to minimize their effect on ease of use. Among the most important tasks that the masters solve during the installation of butterfly loops is to ensure uniformity when converging cards. Usually, inconsistencies are eliminated by creating backings. For this, cardboard, thin chips, paper and similar material are used - it must be placed in the part opposite to the side that does not overlap.

In addition, the butterfly, due to its design features, does not provide a high degree of reliability. Of course, it all depends on the product, but they are significantly inferior to mortise-type hinges. Therefore, it is important to perform the fixation itself with screws as efficiently as possible - the absence of peeping heads and slopes during the insert will be reflected in reliability.

Another questionable feature is the location of the screws on the map. On one side they are located closely, and on the other - at some distance from each other. The configuration cannot be corrected, but the possibility of damage to the door on which the butterfly hinges are to be attached can be ruled out. Installation is carried out in solid and secure areas - that is, suitable for screwing in.

What doors are suitable for?

It is possible to determine the segment of the best suitable doors for the design of butterfly hinges based on the strength of the fastening. This nuance has already been considered, and it is quite natural that it is undesirable to supplement heavy models with such systems. Still, the operation of insertion into the array adds reliability to the fastening, while external fixation without insurance seems to be very risky when installing a 40-kilogram canvas.

Conversely, butterfly hinges, which are installed as smoothly and cleanly as possible, are ideal for lightweight doors that require little installation effort. In particular, representatives of the veneered category are combined with "butterflies" not only technically, but also visually. Models made of solid wood are recommended to be equipped with mortise fittings - the complexity of installation is compensated by their reliability.

Decorative effect

The overlay fastening system of the butterfly loop is also due to aesthetic considerations. No matter how neat the inset may be, the master will not be able to preserve the integrity and decorative completeness of the door to the same extent. Bypassing all the difficulties of installing such loops, you can achieve an unsurpassed result. Since there is no need to interfere with the capricious laminated surface, doors with butterfly hinges should be considered as the best option for living rooms, bedrooms, offices and other rooms where stylistic harmony is important.

Outcome

It is difficult to call the best choice for amateurs and beginners who can count on simple installation without creating a frame. Some risks are eliminated, but others arise. Nevertheless - subject to strict markings and verified convergence of cards - butterfly hinges will provide the result in the form of aesthetic interior doors with an original fastening configuration.

Finally, it is worth turning to mortise models, which still remain the most popular solution for fixing doors. This choice is worth making if you need a solid and reliable structure, however, you will have to sacrifice decorativeness. Nevertheless, the clumsy principle of introducing such hinges is incomparable with a delicate lining without damaging the wood.

Door hinge concept

Door hinges are a special mechanism that is used to tightly adhere the door leaf to the frame and is designed to open and close the door. The service life of the doors directly depends on how correctly the hinges are selected and how well they are installed. To choose the right loops, you need to know their types and characteristics of each.

Main types

These mechanisms are divided into:

  • Flat hinges are standard - plates with cylinders, inside which there is a metal tube, a rod. Such hinges require cutting into the door frame and into the door leaf itself.
  • Overhead hinges "butterfly" - are installed without a tie-in by imposing on the door leaf and frame. They are mounted using a conventional screwdriver and self-tapping screws.
  • Hidden hinges. Like the standard ones, they require a sidebar. But, unlike them, not only the plate is hidden inside the canvas, but also the turning mechanism itself.

  • Hinges with closers. Requires a hidden sidebar. The main advantage of such fittings: after opening, the door closes automatically or slows down at the box itself. This helps to avoid a hard hit.

One of the main components of a successful installation is a thoughtful selection of mechanisms and their correct installation. It is not always possible to use the services of a master. Often this work has to be done independently. Installation of structures such as butterfly hinges does not require any special skills. The main thing is not to experiment and strictly follow the developed instructions.

The opinions of experts on the use of overhead hinges without a tie-in were divided. Someone considers them an excellent alternative due to their ease of installation, reliability and durability, while someone criticizes and prefers other, more complex models. Let's try to find out who is right and whether it is worth using butterfly hinges for interior doors in the household.

Overhead hinges without tie-in

The name itself indicates a characteristic feature of this mechanism - they do not require a special insert either in the canvas or in the door frame. Such hinges are superimposed on the end of the door and are attached with ordinary self-tapping screws. They are also called "butterflies" - because of the peculiar shape of one of the plates.

Similar to the wing of this insect, it easily matches the hole of the same shape on the second part of the structure. Usually, butterfly hinges are installed in rooms where there are no special requirements for the quality of work, and the door has a decorative rather than a protective function. They are often used, for example, in a country house or in a country house. This is a favorite option for a beginner, but experienced masters treat them with distrust.

Advantages

Evaluating the advantages of this mechanism, it can be noted that a lot of installation time is not required, a minimum of tools is used, and all the work comes down to the ability to screw in self-tapping screws. When installing doors, there is no need for a tie-in. This saves a lot of time. Butterfly hinges for lightweight interior doors are ideal. They can withstand numerous openings and closings and can last for many years. But such mechanisms are not suitable for doors weighing more than 35 kg. A heavy door leaf requires the use of more complex hinges.

Weaknesses

In addition to many advantages, butterfly hinges for interior doors have their own disadvantages:

  • They cannot be mounted on the front door - they do not perform protective functions. Aesthetically, cut-in hinges look better.
  • Limited scope: they are not designed to hold a large weight, they are only suitable for doors up to 35 kg.

  • Due to the smaller number of fastening holes and the large distance between them, the hinges for butterfly doors do not allow for a more tight grip on the door leaf. Other types of fastening mechanisms cope with this task.
  • Not used for metal entrance doors. A metal door is mainly used as an entrance door, not an interior door. Its main function is protection against hacking. In this case, the hinged "butterfly" hinge is not suitable, the installation of which is carried out using a conventional screwdriver and screws. This requires a more complex mechanism with a protection system and ensures tight adhesion of the door frame to the door leaf when closing.

Mounting

If you plan to install doors at the dacha, butterfly hinges are ideal. The algorithm is so simple that everyone can handle editing. You will need a screwdriver, self-tapping screws, a ruler and a pencil.

So, we take the loop, open it. On the door leaf, measure 20 cm from the edge with a tape measure, mark the future holes and screw the inner part of the hinge to the end of the door. Now let's move on to the door frame. Since we have a one-piece "butterfly" hinge, the installation takes place in this way: we unscrew the inner part from the door, attach it to the box and mark the future holes for the screws. Now you can mount: the inner part - to the door leaf, the outer part - to the frame.

Eliminate the flaws

Sometimes unpleasant moments happen: the door does not close tightly. The already fixed inner and outer parts do not match, as a result of which the door is skewed and does not stick to the box. There are two solutions:

  1. If both halves of the "butterfly" in a free position are not in the same plane, then you need to choose the right loops so that the inner and outer parts coincide and the "butterfly wing" fits exactly into the hole on the opposite half of the loop.
  2. In order not to dismantle the hinges, the inner part can be adjusted on site. To do this, slightly release the screws and put a match or cardboard under the inner half of the "butterfly". We get a small gap, due to which both halves are well closed.

Sagging of the upper hinge often occurs. Even if it is insignificant, only a couple of millimeters, the door still does not close. In this case, a larger gap is made from the side of the lock. But if the box is already assembled and fixed with foam, you can slightly drown the top flap into it. Here you have to work a little and hollow out a small depression. But due to the figuredness of the hinge, it is much more difficult to do this than just mounting overhead hinges. You can make a mistake in the calculations or damage the door leaf. So you have to choose - either to use the services of a specialist, or to install "butterflies" on the doors is simpler, where beauty is not so important. For example, in a summer house or summer cottage.

As you can see, butterfly hinges are suitable for self-installation. Installation does not take much time and does not require any special skills. But do not forget that the door must be light, otherwise everything will soon have to be redone. They are just right for giving, but for the living room it is better to choose something more serious and use the services of a specialist.

Today I will show you how to cut hinges with a router without a template. So let's go!

We take measurements and put marks

The first thing we need to do is measure 20 centimeters from both ends of the canvas, in order to give us subsequent marks for inserting the loops.

We mark 20 centimeters, put a mark with a pencil. Then we take the hinge and attach it to the door. It is the upper part that needs to be applied, and not the lower one, where our first wing merges with the core.

This must be done so that when we install the door, the upper wing is parallel to the canvas.

So, we apply a loop.

As you can see, the loop is parallel to the canvas. We hold the loop and mark it with a knife, naturally without moving the loop.

With light movements, with a sharp knife, we put marks.

Cut out a groove for the loop on the canvas

The next thing you need to do is set your router to the depth of the cutter immersion to the thickness of the loop, so that this whole loop is drowned with us.

So here's my router. It has already been adjusted so that the cutter extends to the thickness of the loop.

But I did a little less, that is, the loop I will not cut completely. After we have adjusted the depth of immersion of the cutter, we proceed directly to the inset of the loop itself.

Here's what I ended up with.

I went through with a frezer, without reaching the line that I marked with a knife, but the point is that we will already finish this part with a chisel. And the depth we need has already been cut in, everything is smooth.

We continue with a chisel and a hammer.

As a result, the loop fits perfectly.

Cut out the hinge groove on the box

The next thing we need to do is transfer the dimensions of the hinges to the box. Usually I do it right away, and then I cut both into the canvas and into the box. But there is not much difference.

To do this, we leave a distance of 3 millimeters from the edge of the cut (in this case, we sawed at 45 degrees).

Then we just need to make one mark. Usually I do it from the side that goes closer to the edge of the canvas, and from it I mark it on the box later.

In the same way, mark on the other side exactly along the edge.

Next, we need to remove the box and also circle the attached loop with a knife. Here, in the same way, we lead parallel to the loop, you can very easily see and adjust it. Then we proceed directly to the sidebar. But here our task becomes more complicated, since it will not work just to put a router here because of the differences. Accordingly, at first glance, it is difficult to do all this without any templates.

But there is one secret. And this is what it consists of. Next, we apply a second rack. we put a disconnector between them and grab it with tape.

This is how the box looks like after cutting in with a milling cutter.

It remains to remove the excess with a chisel and a hammer.

In just a minute, I removed all unnecessary things, and the loop fits perfectly.

Completion of work

Since our stand is made of wood, the drill can lead to the side. You can easily control this. We need to do the same on the canvas - we apply a loop and drill a hole.
