However, this textile is a clear refutation of conventional wisdom about synthetic materials: it has high hygienic properties, retains heat well, and does not irritate the skin. Modern fleece fabric has many varieties, and its scope is constantly expanding.

What is fleece?

This material was born in the late seventies of the last century thanks to the scientific developments of the Malden Mills company, later awarded the Nobel Prize. Having set themselves the task of creating a fabric that would retain heat well, be light and "breathable", the researchers developed the Polar Fleece production technology, which consisted of the following stages:

  • creation of a dense knitted fabric based on polyester;
  • wet and heat treatment of knitwear;
  • pulling threads to the surface using special equipment;
  • anti-peeling treatment.

Since when the pile is pulled, the integrity of the threads is not violated, the fabric is a base with many pores, on which a fluffy fleece is located. Anti-peeling treatment prevents pellets from forming. If necessary, antimicrobial, antistatic or water-repellent layers can be applied to the canvas.

This fabric is available in various weights (80-600 g / m2). Its composition can also be of variety, in particular:

  • wear-resistant and well-fitting polyester with an admixture of lycra;
  • with the addition of spandex (for leggings, gloves, cuffs, etc.);
  • two-layer (bipolaraflis), which is a combination of an insulating and wind-moisture protective layer;
  • three-layer windblock, in which the windproof material is located between two thin fleece layers;
  • having a natural composition (from merino wool).

Advantages and disadvantages

One of the main advantages that synthetic fleece has is that polyethylene terephthalate for its production can be obtained by recycling polyethylene products (containers, packaging films, etc.). However, the wide popularity of this material was determined by its consumer properties such as:

  • ease;
  • softness and elasticity;
  • good strength and wear resistance;
  • the ability to keep warm, including when wet;
  • hypoallergenic;
  • the possibility of air exchange;
  • hygroscopicity;
  • fast drying;
  • easy care;
  • small volume when folded.

However, this material is not devoid of some drawbacks. It has such undesirable properties as structural change when exposed to high temperatures and a tendency to catch fire. However, this, as well as the accumulation of static electricity, can be avoided with the help of special impregnations, and the tendency to accumulate dust in the pile is easily eliminated by regular washing. Fleece jersey is elastic, but it can deform with long wear. High-quality fabric retains its structure for a long time, but cheap products may soon have pellets.

What is fleece material used for?


This fluffy and comfortable fabric, which, moreover, is quite inexpensive, is confidently conquering all new directions of clothing. Although fleece was originally developed as a fabric for sportswear, its properties allow this unpretentious material to be used in many ways. The main criterion for this is the density of the fabric, therefore, when choosing it, you need to carefully study the description of its characteristics. Distinguish by density:

  • microfleece with a density of less than 100 g / sq. meter, used for children's clothing, linen, as a lining material;
  • thin polar fleece (about 100 g / sq. meter), used for the production of thermal underwear, leggings, home and casual clothing;
  • Polar fleece of medium density (about 200 g / m2) is the most common. It is used for streetwear, hats, gloves, scarves, tracksuits, as an insulating lining;
  • dense material (300 g / sq. meter) is used for sewing outerwear and sportswear for the cold season, blankets, rugs and other home jersey;
  • Polar fleece with a density of 400 g / sq. meter and more, used for sports and special clothing designed for extreme conditions.

This fabric is indispensable for sports and children's clothing, including for the little ones.... Over time, she became a favorite of youth and street fashion. Gradually, fleece clothing lost its status of informal, and now it is acceptable wherever an office and formal dress code is not required. As for the home wardrobe, its ability to keep warm and allow skin to breathe, along with its low weight and ease of care, made robes, pajamas, soft pants and sweatshirts indispensable for the cooler season. The same applies to cozy and literally weightless bedspreads and rugs, which, moreover, are not damaged by insects and are very easy to keep clean.

Rules for the use of fabric when sewing clothes

The widespread use of fleece knitwear sometimes makes you forget about the fact that it was originally developed as a material for insulating pads. In order for the heat-saving properties of this fluffy material to fully manifest, it must be worn correctly.

Athletes and tourists alike are well aware of the “three-layer rule,” which states that fleece should not be in direct contact with the skin (although there will be no harm in doing so). It is desirable that the first layer is cotton, which, moreover, will protect the body from static electricity (if the jersey has not been specially treated). The second layer is an insulating fleece fabric, and the thicker and fluffier this material will be, the better the protection from the cold. The structure of the third layer depends on the purpose of the garment. If it is intended for active movement, then it is necessary to ensure the removal of water vapor and the flow of air. If this is a jacket for inclement weather, then the top layer should be water-repellent and air-tight.

The same rule applies if the fleece is made of natural wool, which retains heat much better than polyester fibers. Such a natural insulating material, which allows it to withstand severe frosts, is not very common in our market and is quite expensive. More recently, it was believed that the best protection from the cold is wool and down. However, the synthetic fleece fabric does more than just keep you warm. It is also very light and soft, does not cause allergies, and besides, it is not too expensive and easy to care for. This fluffy, cozy and warm material is used more and more widely, and the number of its types and modifications is constantly increasing.

Synthetic, yet superior to natural wool, fleece fabric was first produced in 1979. Malden Mills, currently Polartec, has introduced Polar Fleece (polar sheepskin) fabric in the development of new thermal insulation materials. Fleece was obtained using a completely new technology and had unusual properties. The basis of the fleece was a dense knitted fabric made of thin polyester threads, which was treated with hot steam. Then, with the help of special rollers with small crochet hooks, loops of a certain height, similar to fluffy fur, were pulled out, while the threads did not break, and the fabric acquired a porous structure.

Such fabric kept the heated air at the surface of the body, allowed the skin to breathe, absorbed water well and retained its heat-insulating properties even when wet.

The developers of the fleece became Nobel laureates, and at the same time did not apply for a patent for their invention. Therefore, this material is now produced by many companies, and can be inexpensive, although not all manufacturers provide the proper quality of their products.

The answer to the question "fleece - what kind of fabric?" may be different. Fleece materials are very diverse, they are one-sided and two-sided, monochromatic, printed and even camouflage. Their density varies from 80 to 600 g / m2, and the structure and processing methods, depending on the purpose, may differ significantly.   • Membrane Windstopper designed for weather protection, manufactured by W.L. Gore & Associates (USA), in which the membrane can be lined or located between two fleece layers;
  • a variety of Technopile materials from the Italian company Pontetorto, whose assortment includes jersey, jacquard, mesh and other unusual varieties of fleece;
  • products of such companies as Patagonia, Cosilana, Big Pack –Trevira, Engel, VauDe-Pontetipto, etc.

The highest quality material is obtained from polyester fiber of the DuPont brand or comparable in quality, and its price from the manufacturer is about $ 6 per running meter. Cheap Chinese products often turn out to be just an imitation of real fleece, they roll quickly, do not protect from the cold, and sometimes even have a glued pile. Therefore, when buying fleece products, you should require a certificate confirming what it is, and understand that savings can only result in additional costs.

Main characteristics and application

Regardless of the type, density and composition of fleece fabrics, they are characterized by such properties as:

  • high heat-insulating properties, including when wet;
  • light weight;
  • pleasant tactile sensations, softness;
  • extensibility;
  • wear resistance and strength;

The disadvantages of this material include its ability to accumulate static charge (which is eliminated by special processing or the presence of cotton linen), as well as dust. A more serious problem should be considered instability to high (more than 60 degrees) temperatures, as well as the possibility of fire.

The aim of the development of fleece was to create lightweight, compact and highly insulating pads, and in this role it is still used very widely. However, it should be remembered that the most effective thermal protection involves a three-layer structure.... Varieties

Fleece is not even so much a specific material as a group of different types of fabrics, each of which has its own characteristics and may be more or less suitable for specific tasks. By density

Fleece does not imply any standard indicators, each manufacturer can change the same density at his own discretion. As a result of such manipulations, actually different tissues appear with a different degree of heat preservation, therefore, from the same matter (judging by the name), things can be made for fundamentally different needs. This is best seen on the example of a specific classification.

  • Thin fleece weighs only 100-200 grams per square meter. Sewing clothes from it is not entirely justified, since the material does not retain heat so well that it can be used on its own, without other clothes. The main area of ​​application of such fabric is sewing thermal underwear, and it can also be used to make a lining for light spring and autumn jackets.



  • Medium density fleece is already heavier - 200-300 g / m2... It is this kind of fabric that is usually used for sewing children's clothes, since with a relatively low weight of things, they provide decent protection from the cold in combination with other clothes. The same material is most often used for sewing gloves and hats.
  • Heavyweight fleece up to 400 grams per square meter is designed to solve serious problems with low temperatures, since it is distinguished by its considerable thickness and heat-saving ability. Winter outerwear is often sewn from this type of fabric, but it is most suitable for sewing warm blankets - under them, even in a relatively cold apartment, you can sleep undressed.



  • Fleece material is called very dense, the density of which has exceeded 400 grams per square meter.(The maximum indicator is considered to be 600 grams). In our area, you cannot find such material everywhere - it is designed for rather harsh conditions, therefore clothes from it are sewn either for a very harsh climate, or for a long stay in the cold. In the middle lane, the main consumers of such products are usually tourists going to the mountains or on winter outings with an overnight stay in a tent.


By composition and manufacturing technology

Based on the same significant differences in density, we can conclude that the technology for the production of fleece is described only in general terms - each manufacturer can introduce its own characteristics into the procedure in order to achieve an optimal result. Many companies have done this over the past four decades, with the result that they have begun to identify several specific types of fleece fabrics, whose names are often much more widely known than the actual term "fleece". It is difficult to list them all, since the problem is even to simply count them, therefore we will single out only the most famous and emphasize their fundamental characteristics.

  • Microfiber, or velsoft- a kind of fleece with increased strength and softness, the density is usually in the range of 250-310 g / m2. The key feature of microfiber is its elongated pile, thanks to which it is able to absorb significant amounts of water and dries very quickly. Such characteristics make it possible to use it for the production of various travel towels and cloths for wiping glasses.


  • Mahra Also known as frotte, it is composed primarily of cotton or linen, and although the exact percentage may vary, this material is often considered natural rather than synthetic. The pile is double-sided here, it is formed thanks to small loops of individual threads. The density of terry cloth is 160-180 g / m2, and although it does not have outstanding thermal insulation properties, it is often used for sewing light blankets due to its pleasant touch.


  • Footer is made with a certain amount of cotton, which gives manufacturers a more durable material with increased water absorption. The fleece of the footer is observed only on one side, which reduces its thickness, practically without affecting the ability to retain heat.


  • Velours among all the fabrics described above, it is the most dense and, accordingly, warm. The density of this material varies greatly - from 220 to 420 g / m2, which affects the width of the layer of villi (3-7 mm). Velor is prized for being resistant to creasing and wrinkling, while being highly resistant to wear and tear.
