VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine's Day has been celebrated on February 14 in Europe since the 13th century In the USA - since 1777 In Russia - since the early 1990s

The British reckon on February 14, nature makes a turn towards spring, and the mating season begins for the birds, even an old English proverb says: "On Valentine's Day, all birds in the air mingle in pairs."

In the 3rd century A.D. the Roman emperor Claudius II issued a decree forbidding people to marry. He believed that marriage kept men at home, and that they were destined to be good soldiers and fight for Rome. But there was a man who, despite the cruel prohibition, secretly consecrated the unions of lovers. The name of the young Christian priest was Valentine.

Having discovered these "anti-state" marriages, the emperor ordered that the offender be imprisoned and then executed. While in prison, Valentine saw the jailer's daughter. Young people fell in love with each other. Before his execution, on February 14, 270, he sent the girl a short farewell note with the signature: "From Valentine", which later came to mean eternal affection and loyalty. And the date of death of the priest, who betrothed lovers, despite severe obstacles, and did not see his own happiness, has forever remained in the memory of people. His ashes are buried in the Church of St. Praxidis in Rome.

The date of the execution coincided with a Roman celebration in honor of Juno, the goddess of love. Since then, every year on February 14, people remembered Valentine and arranged a holiday for all lovers.

What is Valentine's Day? Every February, all over the country, lovers exchange sweets, flowers and gifts, all in the name of Valentine's Day. So what is this mysterious saint? And why are we celebrating this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day is shrouded in mystery. However, we know that February has been the month of romance for quite a long time. Valentine's Day, as we now know it, contains a little of both Christianity and the traditions of Ancient Rome. Well, who is Saint Valentine and how did we start celebrating this ceremony? Currently, the Catholic Church distinguishes at least two different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, each of whom was a martyr.

As Valentine's Day is celebrated in different countries. On this day, even the most hardened skeptics feel the approach of spring. Only on this day there are so many couples hugging each other and smiling women on the streets. It's just that Valentine's Day has come ... Officially Valentine's Day has existed for more than 16 centuries, but the holidays of Love have existed since the times of ancient pagan cultures. For example, the Romans celebrated Lupercalia in mid-February, a festival in honor of the goddess of love Juno Februata. The purpose of the holiday was to find a lover, and after the celebration, many new families usually appeared. The search for "halves" went something like this: during the celebration, young people beat whoever was hit with scraps of animal skins, and apparently, it was especially those who were the object of their sighs that hit them especially. "Objects", however, did not particularly resist, believing that this will make them more attractive next year. And in the ancient world, almost at the same time, Panurgy was celebrated - ritual games in honor of the god Pan - the patron saint of herds, forests, fields and their fertility. However, Russia also had its own holiday of lovers, only because of the difference in weather conditions it was celebrated not in winter, but at the beginning of summer. It was associated with the legendary love story of Peter and Fevronia and is dedicated to Kupala - the pagan Slavic god, the son of Perun.

However, paganism is pagan, but the holiday also has a specific "culprit" - the Christian priest Valentine. Valentine's Day has been massively celebrated since the 13th century in Western Europe, since 1777 in the United States, and since the early 90s of the 20th century in our country. However, it is worth noting that the Holiday of Love is not particularly adapted to our weather conditions, because here in mid-February it is far from spring, and one does not think about high feelings at minus 10. Well, okay, in the end, do we keep up with the entire civilized world? Therefore, gradually, the tradition began to spread among us, to write "valentines" on this day and to give gifts. By the way, Samuel Pelis, the court chronicler of the English court, mentioned in the 17th century that gifts should be made on Valentine's Day. He testifies that on February 14, lovers should exchange souvenirs: gloves, rings and sweets. And on this day, a woman can approach any man she likes and offer to marry her. And not one man should offend a woman with a refusal, and if his heart is already occupied by someone, he is obliged to give a woman a silk dress. The tradition of giving gifts on this day grew stronger every year and for some it has become a fairly successful business. For example, at the beginning of the last century, it was customary for Americans to send marzipans to their brides, which were quite expensive. So I had to get out - to establish the production of caramel on the continent.

The business became especially profitable thanks to the priest Valentin: the "capitalists" began to produce special sweets for this holiday with congratulatory words scratched on them, and then also put them in heart-shaped cardboard boxes, which was a huge success. In Japan, the tradition of giving sweets on this day also appeared for a reason, but at the suggestion of a large chocolate company. They began celebrating Valentine's Day there in the 1930s, and to this day, chocolate remains the most common gift. By the way, there Valentine's Day slightly resembles "March 8 for men", as Japanese men receive, perhaps, even more gifts than women. Usually these are all sorts of men's accessories such as a razor, lotion, wallet, and so on. It is customary for passionate French people to give jewelry on Valentine's Day, and in romantic Denmark, people send dried white flowers to each other. A significant place in the celebration of the Roman Day of Love was given to fortune-telling, and until now, oddly enough, in Europe it remains a tradition of Valentine's Day. It is believed that it is on this day, February 14, that birds choose a mate for themselves, and people need to hurry up to do the same. Especially sentimental are the girls and boys of England, because there, in fortune-telling on Valentine's Day, they believe especially strongly. For example, in Britain, on February 14, unmarried girls get up before sunrise, stand near the window and look at the passing men. According to legend, the first man they see is the betrothed.

Who is Saint Valentine? Who is Valentine, you ask? There are many stories, legends and rumors about Saint Valentine. So who is he - Saint Valentine, who gave the whole world Valentine's Day? They say that in fact there were two Saint Valentines who died in Ancient Rome in 269 and were revered on the same day. Their deeds have long become a legend, and now no one remembers exactly which of them the holiday was dedicated to. It is only known that one of them, a younger one, was a preacher and a doctor in Rome. During the persecution of Christians by the emperor Claudius, he was executed. Another Valentine, lived near Rome and died a martyr's death at the hands of pagans in the same year 269. Many legends about Saint Valentine coincide and intertwine, but each of them has its own nuance that makes it different from the others: In ancient Rome, there was once a doctor named Valentine. He was called the "gastronomic doctor" because he was always concerned that the medicines he prescribed to the sick tasted good. To add a delicious taste to medicines, he mixed bitter potions with wine, milk or honey. He washed his wounds with wine and used herbs to relieve pain. Saint Valentine was also a preacher. And although in those days Christians in Rome were persecuted, he became a priest. Valentine lived during the time of Claudius II, who was famous for his many aggressive warriors. When Claudius had problems recruiting new soldiers for the army, he decided that the reason lay in the soldiers' affection for their wives and families. And canceled weddings and engagements.

And Valentin began not only to pray for the health of his patients, but also to secretly marry couples in love. Here are a few more legends.  On the days when a young Christian named Valentine went to prison, the Roman calendar counted the last days of the outgoing year. According to the Roman calendar, it was in mid-February that the New Year was celebrated. And Valentine at this time was eating prison cakes, praying and knew that he would never see the real spring. His prison warden was harsh and hated Christians. Once he intercepted several notes addressed to Valentin, which were thrown to him by the children who stood under the window of his cell. The notes contained all sorts of things: congratulations on the holiday, greetings and wishes from the townspeople who knew him. The warden drove the children away and thought. His beloved daughter was blind. Who needs a blind bride? The jailer brought his daughter to the imprisoned doctor, not knowing that the grief of the blind girl would turn into the grief of a lover. A miracle happened: Valentine restored her sight, and she fell in love with him. Soon he was executed. Only one testimony remained of their love, a small letter, which the young man wrote for her, modestly signing at the end: “Your Valentine”. Here's a not very funny story. Valentine's Day exists for this, so that people remember that each other must be treated with care, with love.

13 slide

Slide Description:

 According to another legend, Valentine was actually the first person who sent a congratulation - "Valentine". It is assumed that while he was in prison, he fell in love with a young girl (possibly the daughter of his prison guard) who visited him during his imprisonment. It is assumed that before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine" - an expression that is used to this day. Of course, the truth in these legends about Valentine is quite difficult to discern, since in the stories everything is exaggerated and described with heroic, and most importantly, romantic undertones. Therefore, it is not surprising that in the Middle Ages Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Valentine's Day symbol !!! Cupid is the hero of Roman mythology, the son of the goddess Venus and the most famous symbol of Valentine's Day. This is a mischievous angel with a bow and a quiver, who always keeps a couple of dozen magic arrows with him and shoots very well. Those people and gods who are hit by Cupid's arrow fall in love. In ancient Greece, the analogue of Cupid was the young son of the goddess Aphrodite Eros. One of the myths tells the tender and touching love story of Cupid and Psyche. Cupid's mother Venus did not like the unearthly beauty of an earthly girl. And Venus ordered her son to punish the mortal, but instead Cupid fell in love with Psyche and made her his wife. But since people cannot look at the gods, Psyche did not know what her husband looked like. Psyche was happy until her sisters convinced the girl to follow her husband and finally see him. Cupid got angry for disobedience to Psyche and punished her: he left the girl, and with him disappeared the beautiful castle in which they lived, and the wonderful magical gardens. Psyche was left alone and suffered greatly without a loved one.

To find her lover, she went to the temple of Venus and turned to Cupid's mother for help. And Venus, who did not love Psyche, decided to take the opportunity and destroy the girl. Promising as a reward to tell where to find Cupid, Venus gave Psyche impossible tasks, one more difficult than the other. For the sake of Beloved Cupid, Psyche was ready for anything! The last task for Psyche was to deliver Pandora's Box (which contained the beauty of Pluto's wife) to the underworld. During the journey, Psyche was on the verge of death more than once, but under no circumstances should she open Pandora's Box. But curiosity defeated caution, and Psyche opened it. And instead of the intended beauty, the cunning Venus hid a dead dream in Pandora's Box, which killed Psyche, punishing her curiosity. Cupid found his beloved lifeless on earth. He forgave her and took her dead sleep from her. And the gods, delighted with the power of Psyche's love, made Psyche a goddess.

Valentines! Well, here we come to the valentines. According to an old tradition, all young people, boys and girls, can openly confess their love by sending their beloved or beloved a postcard decorated with scarlet hearts or any gift in the shape of a heart, or a red tulip. According to a Persian legend, a red tulip grew from the tears of lovers and became an unfading symbol of love. They give more hearts on this day, in our time they are called "valentines." The first written "valentines" appeared in the 15th century. But here, too, there are different opinions about who the writing of the first "Valentine" card belongs to? According to one version, the creation of the first written "valentine" is attributed to the Duke of Orleans, who was sitting at that time in prison, in solitary confinement, and who decided to fight boredom by writing love letters to his wife. This first "valentine" has survived to this day and is on display in the British Museum. According to other sources, the oldest "Valentine" card was recently discovered in a British library. This letter was written in 1477. In the message, the girl asks the young man to prove that he really loves her. She says that she will get her mother to increase her dowry, and he must marry her. This letter was bought by the library from the British family, in whose archives it was kept, back in the 30s. It was only last year that it was discovered by one of the library's new employees.

Gloves Once upon a time, if a man wanted to marry a woman, he "asked for her hand." The hand has become a symbol of love and marriage. Gloves soon became a symbol of marriage.

Lace Hundreds of years ago, women carried lace handkerchiefs with them. If a lady dropped a handkerchief, the man next to her had to pick up the handkerchief and return it to the woman. Sometimes a lady dropped a lace scarf on purpose to meet a man she liked. Soon, lace became fully associated with romance.

Celebration traditions On this day, girls and boys got together, wrote names on pieces of paper and threw these pieces of paper into a jug, then each took out one piece of paper and learned the name of his beloved person. In some countries, it is still the custom to choose Valentine (both sexes) on February 14 for the next year.

A holiday that The 14th of February celebrated by many people around the world. Presumably named after one of two early Christian martyrs named Valentine - Valentine of Interamnsky and Valentine of Rimsky

In the late Middle Ages in France and England, the life of St. Valentine gradually began to acquire legends associated with secret wedding of couples in love.

According to Golden legend in those distant and dark times, the domineering and cruel Roman emperor Claudius II came to the conclusion that a single man, not burdened by his wife and family, would be better off fighting on the battlefield for the glory of the king, and forbade men to marry, and women and girls - to marry their beloved men.

A Saint Valentine was ordinary field doctor and a priest who sympathized with the unfortunate lovers and secretly from everyone, under cover of night, sanctified the marriage of loving men and women. Soon the activities of St. Valentine became known to the authorities, and he was put in prison and sentenced to death. In conclusion, Saint Valentine made the acquaintance of the overseer's beautiful daughter, Julia.

Before his death, the enamored priest wrote a declaration of love to his beloved girl - valentine , where he told about his love, and signed it "Your Valentine". It was read after he was executed, and the execution itself took place February 14, 269.

So, according to the Golden Legend, and now Valentine's Day is celebrated The 14th of February.

  • The French It is customary to give jewelry on Valentine's Day.
  • But the British congratulate not only people, but also beloved animals on Valentine's Day.
  • And the Japanese turned Valentine's Day into "March 8 for Men". On this day, gifts in Japan are given mainly to men.

  • In romantic Denmark people send dried white flowers to each other.
  • Girls Europe write their names on pieces of paper, put them in a box, and the young men then take out a piece of paper from there, thereby choosing a pair for themselves.

  • In Spain On February 14, men present only flowers to their loved ones, and those in turn - gifts.
  • In Taiwan It is customary to give roses to women on Valentine's Day. The quantity matters. If a man sends one flower, it means that he confesses his love, and if a luxurious bouquet of 100 roses, he proposes to marry.
