Work on the costume

First of all, we undertake to sew a shirt front, for which a pattern is needed. If a pattern from the Internet is used, its size will change depending on the height of the child. The shirt should be slightly lower than the chest, so the length is determined individually. Using the pattern, transfer the details to the fabric and cut out.

The costume will be more interesting if the bottom of the shirt front is cut with teeth, so that they resemble rooster feathers. Cut the colored pieces of fabric in the form of drops, and then sew in several rows. Each top row should slightly cover the bottom.

To make the sleeves of the turtleneck look like the wings of a rooster, decorate them with cuffs. Cut out the bottom of the cuff with teeth, as the bib was cut out. In order not to sew them to the turtleneck, a loop is attached from one edge, and a button from the other. This allows the cuffs to be taken off and on, and used for other outfits. We make a rooster costume with our own hands from improvised means, so instead of fabric, you can use colored cardboard. Cut the cuffs out of cardboard as you would cut out of fabric.

Surely the child will have unnecessary pants, from which you can make fluffy rooster pants. The trousers should be cut so that they are slightly below the knee, and the hem should be decorated with teeth. If there are scraps of fabric in the form of drops that were cut out for the shirt front, then they are suitable for decorating pants. To prevent the child from freezing, you can wear yellow, beige or white tights under the pants, and sandals, gym shoes or slippers.

The New Year's rooster costume will look more interesting if the shoes are made from rubber gloves. Fill the places for fingers with gloves with cotton wool or padding polyester, leaving free space for the foot. The back of the gloves needs to be glued together, and an incision is made on top so that they can be put on and laced up.

The main detail of the rooster costume is the comb. In order to make it, you need a red fabric. Draw the outline of the comb onto the fabric and cut out two pieces. They can be wavy or serrated. Sew the two halves and fill with padding polyester, then attach the comb to the baby's cap or hood. If there is no padding polyester, then you can use cotton wool or sheathe a comb-shaped cardboard with a cloth.

Design features

Components of a New Year's rooster costume

The main part of the costume can rightly be considered a headdress. Often, it alone is enough to create the image of the Rooster. As such a garment, you can use a ready-made hat or bandana of the appropriate shade, or sew it yourself according to the measurements taken from two cut halves.

An important detail of this headdress is, of course, the comb. It must be sewn without fail from red fabric, mostly shiny. In order to make it voluminous, the comb, sewn from two symmetrical parts, is filled with padding polyester or foam rubber, and then fastened on top of the cap.

Quite often, the headdress is complemented with elements such as the beak and eyes of a rooster. The beak is recommended to be made in a ridge-like manner. Eyes can be made of felt, stitching to the headdress with a seam for applique, or use plastic eyes, placing them on the fabric with silicone glue.

If you wish, you can not waste time on sewing a headdress, but limit yourself to making a mask, for which dense materials that are resistant to deformation, for example, felt, will be the best option.


For making shirts, it is advisable to use the "bat" model. It can be smaller and serve as a bib, worn over a white or other plain shirt or golf shirt. With a clasp of such a model, it is recommended to use a bright lace or a ribbon tied at the neck in front or a large button.

Over the entire surface of the shirt or shirt-front, feathers cut out of multi-colored felt are sewn from bottom to top in a checkerboard pattern, thereby imitating the chest and sweeping wings of a rooster.


As the lower part of the suit, you can use ready-made breeches, shorts or harem pants in color with the main material of the shirt or bib. The required nuance is the length. The selected model should be above or slightly below the knee. To create the effect of rooster thighs, you can decorate shorts or breeches with plain or multi-colored fluffy flounces or ruffles made of satin or silk.

Workpieces of different lengths cut from satin or silk are best glued with non-woven fabric or laid with a thin padding polyester, and then stitched.

You can connect ready-made feathers in different ways:

  • Fabric feathers are laid out on top of each other from the bottom up from the shortest to the longest, after which they are connected with a seam and attached to the bottom of the suit. A tail created in this way will work best on shorts or breeches if it is sewn into the back seam that connects the legs.
  • Finished fabric feathers are laid out in width. The longest feather will become the center of such a tail. The bottom of the laid out structure can be stitched with a ribbon, the free ends of which will serve as strings.


There is still a case for the shoes. If a child or teenager needs Czech shoes for the New Year's holiday, it is preferable to purchase them in red. The same goes for other types of shoes.

Imitation of cock's feet will become spectacular, which can be reproduced as follows:

How to sew a rooster costume for a kid with your own hands

Now two identical parts are cut out of the canvas, they can have wavy lines or denticles in the upper part of the workpiece, then the resulting segments are sewn from above and on the sides, and the lower part remains untouched, this is necessary in order to fill the prepared comb with cotton wool, and then it will be possible to sew up the lower part of the craft. Next, you should look for a white cap with strings in stores that will fit on the head of an adult, the resulting comb is sewn to it, and you get a hat with a comb. If you do not want to sew on the workpiece, then the use of hot liquid glue is quite suitable, it will securely fix the comb on the cap.

Two identical pieces for the tail are cut from each flap, they are sewn together in two pieces, and then they are also filled with cotton wool, like a comb.




The resulting feathers are sewn into a single composition, and after that they are sewn to the belt, when the whole suit is worn on an adult, the belt will fasten on the trousers and the tail will not fall off, while when sewing it is worth paying attention to the brightest and longest feather in the middle ... Where to begin?

There are several types of masks that you can do yourself:

  • a regular mask made of paper with slits for the eyes - put on the face, fastened with an elastic band;
  • a half mask that covers most of the face (usually up to the lips) can also be made of paper or cardboard and attached to an elastic band, ribbon or straps (such a mask can also be held on a stick, applied to the face);
  • a paper rim on the head - it is easy to attach an image or a cockerel's head (for very little ones) to it, or to glue voluminous details - beak, eyes, beard and comb;
  • in the same way, you can make masks from fabric with your own hands - choose either the simplest first option with transferring the template from paper to fabric, or try to sew a full-fledged cockerel headdress with patterns, fillers and decor (it is best to do this with a hat);
  • the most time-consuming and complex options are papier-mâché and clay masks, however, you can also make them yourself if you wish.


Variations of paper masks cockerel

  • Take the template you like with the image of a rooster, print it, cut it out and glue it to the cardboard (if there is no color printer, and the image will be black and white, it’s not scary, because you can color it with your child). Don't forget the holes for the eyes and for the attachment. Pass the elastic through the last. If possible, you can laminate the mask, as well as decorate it at your discretion: paste over with beads or sequins, add sparkles, mother of pearl, gilding (there are special such gels or shiny pencils), etc.

  • Now try to make a mask on the rim out of paper with your own hands. To do this, it is necessary to measure the circumference of the child's head and make such a "cap-ring". Cut and glue a wide paper strip, then glue another one on top of the resulting rim in a semicircle. Make a beak from a square piece of paper - fold it in half so that a triangle comes out, bend its edges and iron the fold lines well with your fingers. Unfold the square back and cut along the shortest fold line. This will create a beak that will need to be glued to the center of the wide rim. Stick the eyes on the sides - black ovals with white semicircles. Then cut out a curly comb, bend its edges and fold it to the top strip of the rim. When everything is dry, the cockerel mask will need to be painted and decorated as you wish.





  • A more complex mask can be made on the rim. For her, you need a pattern. After cutting out all the parts, start connecting them. The darts on the forehead must be glued, and the beak must be glued into the opening of the nose. To prevent the comb from falling over and be located in an arc, connect it from several segments and glue it to the top of the mask with an overlap. Then glue on the goatee, just try it on first and make sure you place it correctly so that it doesn't interfere with your conversation. You can either immediately cut it out of colored paper / cardboard, or then paint the mask.



Making a mask from fabric and other materials

  • After drawing a mask on paper or taking a template, transfer it to the fabric. To do this, you can choose felt or another soft, but dense fabric. Cut out the workpiece by making slits for the eyes. Attach ribbons or ribbons to it. From above, you can sew on small details - a beard, a comb, a beak.

  • Take a base hat and sew on all the elements of the cockerel image (take measurements from the one who will wear the mask). This can be done from a simple fabric and stuffed with some kind of filler (then the comb, beard, beak will be voluminous), or sew a headdress from foam rubber sheets (you can use Crystal glue for connection). Cut out the material according to the pattern and attach all the details to the base in stages.

  • Another unusual option is a mask made from disposable plates. It is very simple to do - take a plate and cut it in half. Color in orange or yellow. Make slits for the eyes and cover them with brown or black colored paper (you can outline with a marker, shiny pencil). Then glue the feathers around the entire semicircle on top of the plate, and in the center attach a paper yellow or red beak. On the reverse side, you will need to glue a wooden stick so that the mask can be held in your hand.
