How to make a safe from a box

In addition to the cardboard itself, you need to prepare a simple set of tools. Everything you need can be bought at a stationery store.

You will need:

2 stationery knives. One with a thin blade, the other with a wide one;
scissors;
ruler;
pencil or pen;
an awl or a thick needle;
glue (preferably “Moment” or similar);
double sided tape;
creasing tool (not made of metal, preferably plastic);

To begin, print out the templates for the components of the paper safe on white A4 paper. Then transfer the template onto corrugated cardboard.

Cut the cardboard using the 10 template and crease it, then glue it. You need to glue a small square in the center and use an awl to pierce a hole all the way through, as in the picture. Using template 11, make guides and you can start creating several blanks;

Circle with a diameter of 70 mm - template 14;
5 circles with a diameter of 40 mm, pattern 15;
3 circles (they need to be glued together) 40 mm each with a hole in the center all the way through;
2 glued circles 40 mm with holes in the center and half the radius and 1 circle only with a hole at half the radius;
connecting rod, template 16;

After this, cut out the locking rods. You need to cut 2 strips of paper, one with a width of 35 mm and a length of 75 mm, the other with the same width but length in A4 format. These strips need to be carefully rolled and inserted into the hole on the slider to adjust the size. Then take out the roll and glue it with paper around it, lubricate the rod with glue and put it back.

Now is the time to cut out the lock box. Mark and cut holes for the cover rods as shown. Be sure to pierce a hole at a distance of 57 mm from the left wall. Cut out the door according to the template, then glue a circle 70 mm in diameter in the center, make a hole through it with an awl. Glue the door to the frame, aligning the holes using a skewer. Glue 3 glued circles with a diameter of 40 mm, also aligning the holes and guides. Assemble the box by bending and gluing the desired surfaces.

To make the lock handle, take 5 ready-made 40 mm circles fastened together and a piece of wood skewer 38 mm long. You need to wrap and attach a small strip of tape, the same width as the handle, to one end of the skewer. Lubricate the end with paper winding with glue and insert it into the hole of the handle, stick the 6th circle on top without a through hole.

A disk of two circles must be placed on the end of the movable axle, first lubricate the end of the axle with glue. Push a piece of skewer through so that it protrudes 6mm. Place the connecting rod on wooden pins. The handle and mechanism that will open and close the lock are ready, it should look something like the picture. Using additional cardboard or paper can add strength to your structure.

To make door hinges, cut cardboard using templates 12 and 13. Make a rod that will act as a rotating axle. The rod must hold the door tightly, so make a thickened tip in it as in the picture. Wrap a strip of cardboard around the second part of the rod, but do not glue it. Insert the rod into the bottom hole of the hinge and stick the rod out. Then coat the thicker end of the rod with glue and insert it into the hole in the top of the loop. The hinges are ready, check them for rotation.

The last stage is the body. Use templates 1-5 and 8 to create the body. You can use a single piece of cardboard, but this is not necessary. Several components will do. Assemble all the parts and glue them. The paper safe is ready.

These days there are many different services and online stores offering a huge number of different products. A fairly popular safe today, invented back in the 19th century, was created in England and was intended for storing jewelry. However, little has changed now.

Buying even the cheapest and not the most reliable safe will require a lot of expenses, but making a safe with your own hands without spending a penny is quite simple. All you need is a couple of cardboard boxes, a little ingenuity and free time. Such a safe, of course, will not save your jewelry and money, but will serve as decoration and surprise for guests.

In general, there are quite a few ways to make safes. These can be safes with a push-button digital code or a circular digital code. Taking a real model of a safe as a basis, you can easily make a replica of it.

We will make the simplest safe with a digital mechanism.

What materials and tools are needed to make a cardboard safe?

  • Corrugated cardboard (such as food boxes);
  • Wooden skewers;
  • Wooden ice cream sticks,
  • Compass,
  • Ruler,
  • A-4 size paper,
  • 2 stationery knives (with a wide and narrow blade),
  • Scissors,
  • Awl,
  • Scotch,
  • Hot melt adhesive.

Product manufacturing process

How to make a safe from a box? To begin, draw a sheet of A-4 size paper crosswise and cut it along the marked lines using scissors.

Now take a pencil and wrap one cut piece of paper around it, then secure the resulting tube with tape and remove the pencil.

Take the next cut piece of paper and wrap it over the previous resulting tube.

Do the same with the third piece, wrap it around the second resulting tube.

This way you will get three tubes of the same length, but different widths (reminiscent of a magnifying tube from the 19th-20th century).

Cut out the resulting circles using scissors or a utility knife.

Take a drill with a diameter of 8 mm, then drill all three circles in the center.

Using a utility knife, make a cut as in the photo.

After the operation, small pieces of cardboard will remain. Take scissors or a stationery knife and cut out four pieces 1.5 by 1.5 cm, then use glue to glue them to the circles you made earlier (glue two pieces of squares to one of the circles on different sides).

Now take the widest tube made in advance and cut two even pieces 2 cm long from it.

Insert the thinnest tube into the remaining cardboard circle and secure with hot glue.

We put the remaining medium-thick tube on one end of the thin tube, after which we put the remaining two circles with a thick tube in the center on the middle tube. The result should be as shown in the photo.

The main thing is that all the squares on the circles are turned towards the inside of the mechanism.

Now you need to cut out two identical pieces 10 cm long on both sides.

After that, take a wooden popsicle stick and cut off the round ends.

Place the pre-made parts next to each other, then cut evenly with a knife.

Spread the prepared parts to the length of the cut ice cream stick and insert the stick itself into the cuts.

Take a sheet of cardboard and cut out a piece 30 cm long and 15 cm wide.

Cut two pieces 12 cm long and 2 cm wide and fix them on the sides of the large piece, but so that 2 cm remains from the edges.

Then make another piece 28 cm long and 7 cm wide and glue it in the center between the side strips.

Make a piece 23 cm long and 7 cm wide and fix it in the center to the previously attached strip.

Cut three rectangles 7 cm long and 4 cm wide and attach them as shown in the photo.

Prepare two parts 7 cm long and 2 cm wide and glue them together as in the photo.

We make another rectangular piece from cardboard 30 cm long and 25 cm wide and attach it as in the photo.

Drill two identical holes as seen in the photo.

Insert the mechanism prepared earlier into the large hole.

Insert the end of a skewer into the corner piece into the shallow hole.

Cut out the same second rectangle and do the same as with the previous one.

Prepare two side rectangles and close the mechanism from the sides.

Using a compass, draw a small circle, then cut it out and use a marker or pencil to draw markings in the form of numbers.

Apply hot glue to the front side of the mechanism, then, having previously cut out the part with sides of 30 by 25 cm and cut out two holes for the tube and skewer, fix it.

Secure the circle with digital markings to a thin tube using hot glue.

Then take a piece of cardboard and cut out a part in the shape of a handle for your safe (the part can be any).

Now mark your safe as shown in the photo.

A DIY cardboard safe requires a code. To do this, rotate the circle with the markings counterclockwise until one of the cutouts on the three circles in the mechanism coincides with the wooden skewer.

Now write the number obtained as a result of the intersection with the markings on the circle.

Do the same with the remaining circles, rotating them in opposite directions and rewriting the numbers when they match the cutouts.

Once you have written down all three numbers, this will be your password to the safe.

Now let's move on to the frame. Make a box of any shape, then insert our mechanism into it, as seen in the photo.

Happened! Your homemade safe made from corrugated cardboard is ready! To check its functionality, close the door and turn the handle to the “LOCK” position. The safe is closed. Now turn the circle with markings to position “0” and rotate it in opposite directions while entering the code. Turn the handle to the “OPEN” position and the safe is open!

All that remains is to put a few bills from the joke bank there and give it to your children. It will not be possible to open the safe without a code without deforming the structure. This safe looks quite unusual and will serve as clear evidence of how a real safe works.

The other day, our 6-year-old son Volodya suddenly puzzled us: “I need a safe, a real one, that can be locked, and that no one can open it except me.” It would seem, why suddenly there was such a desire to “classify” one’s personal belongings? Of course, children now are much more informed than we were at their age, and their interests are different. There seems to be nothing particularly surprising. But still, it was curious to whom we owe the birth of this idea in our child’s head =). As a result of a little investigation, we found out that the “Barboskins” had “befriended” us. There is such a cartoon. Haven't you watched? Watch it with your children at your leisure, and you will also have something to do :).

In general, having recovered from the first shock, my husband and I began to think about how to make the child’s fantasy come true. We decided right away what to make it from - from corrugated cardboard, of course. This is a convenient, practical and affordable material from which you can model almost anything. In addition, it is also environmentally friendly. It’s a simple miracle, not the material =)

As a result, after calculations and a series of experiments, the result was not only entertaining, but also educational. cardboard toy. The castle turned out to be quite functional!

Of course, the lock mechanism is implemented in a fairly simple form. But nevertheless, everything is very serious - the handle rotates, the locking rods extend and retract.

And the most interesting thing is that you have the opportunity to look inside the lock box and see with your own eyes how everything works there. Agree, this is the most valuable quality for any toy.

Well, the safe itself, despite its compactness, turned out to be quite roomy. Its dimensions: 20x20x25 cm.

Do you also want to know how everything works? I will certainly show you and tell you all the secrets of our safe. And, of course, I’ll tell you how to do this DIY cardboard toy. But first things first.

I want to warn you right away that all the work will require several hours of free time. But in the end, your children will appreciate your feat of work! Older guys, I think, wouldn’t mind working with cardboard and creating a realistic model of a safe with their own hands.

Surely no one will have problems with corrugated cardboard. I would venture to guess that every home has its own supplies. Moreover, both individual sheets of corrugated cardboard and used boxes are suitable. You can, for example, use a ready-made box as a safe body, and then all that remains is to hang a door with a lock on it.

Or you can, like us, cut out the development of the body from a sheet of cardboard of a sufficiently large area. To make it easier to do this and not have to “conjure” cardboard with rulers, measuring sizes and angles, I prepared a set of templates:

They need to be printed on regular A4 office paper and then transferred to corrugated cardboard. Developments of large parts (safe body, lock box) are assembled from several templates according to diagrams, which are also in the file.

In addition to corrugated cardboard and office paper, we will also need:

- ordinary cardboard for children's creativity,

- a small piece of craft paper (if you don’t find it at home or in a store, you can get it at the nearest post office),

- wooden skewer,

- a stationery knife, or better yet 2 at once - with a wide and narrow blade,

- a knife for artistic cutting (useful for certain operations, but in extreme cases you can do without it),

- scissors,

- Ruler and pencil,

- double sided tape,

- “Moment” glue,

- creasing tool.

The scoring tool is worth mentioning separately. Tools that are typically used for creasing regular cardboard or paper may not be suitable for corrugated cardboard. Sharp metal objects can easily damage the integrity of cardboard. I used the gray plastic “knife” that is shown in the photo. You can also process cardboard (but with caution!) with the end of scissors or the end of a flat-head screwdriver.

Let's start working on the safe by making its most “secret” part - the door block.

1. Door with lock.

By using template 10 cut out and crease the development of the slider. Then we glue the part with “Moment”, as shown in the photo. You need to additionally glue a cardboard square into the middle inside and immediately pierce a through hole in the center with an awl.

After the part is glued, you need to insert a piece of wooden skewer into the hole so that the length of the protruding tip is approximately 6 mm. In this case, the other tip of the skewer should be wrapped in paper (to seal) and lubricated with glue (I will demonstrate how this is done below).

We cut, crease and glue the guides for the slider ( template 11).

We also use templates to make the following preparations:

- circle with a diameter of 70 mm - template 14,

— 5 glued circles with a diameter of 40 mm with a through hole in the center and 1 circle without a hole (for the lock handle) — template 15,

- 3 glued circles (40 mm) with a through hole in the center (this will be a fixed disk inside the lock), as well as 2 glued circles (40 mm) with holes in the center and in the middle of the radius and 1 circle only with a hole in the middle of the radius (this there will be a movable disk),

- bar with 2 holes at the ends (connecting rod) - template 16.

Next we make the locking rods. From ordinary cardboard we cut out a strip 35 mm wide and a length corresponding to the long side of the A4 format, and from kraft paper we cut a strip of the same width and approximately 70 mm long. We glue pieces of double-sided tape, as shown in the photo.

We twist a tight roll from a cardboard strip and insert it into the hole of the slider, allowing it to unravel slightly.

After this, we take out the roll and glue it together. Then we cover it with craft paper. We also cut out a circle from kraft paper and glue it to the end of the resulting rod. Lubricate the rod with glue and insert it into the slider hole.

We cut, crease and bend the development of the lock box. Having placed the slider in the place where it will be located, we mark and cut out round holes for the locking rods. Just for this operation, it is better to use a knife for artistic cutting, which will allow you to get more accurate holes.

In addition, we pierce a hole with an awl at a distance of 57 mm from the side wall (from the side of the slider).

We cut out the door according to the template and glue the previously prepared circle with a diameter of 70 mm in the center. We pierce a through hole with an awl. Then glue the door to the box, aligning the holes (using a skewer).

Now we assemble the box by gluing its side walls. The box can be closed and opened easily, and this will allow the lock mechanism to be repaired if necessary. Although the main function of such an opening box is, of course, gaming. Volodya himself comes up with “breakdowns” and immediately successfully fixes them :)

To make the lock handle, take a blank of 5 glued circles (40 mm) and a piece of wooden skewer, which will serve as an axis. The length of this axis should be calculated based on the thickness of the cardboard, the dimensions of the handle and the disks (later it will be more clear which dimensions should be taken into account). My axle turned out to be 38 mm long.

We wrap one end of the skewer and glue with double-sided tape a small strip of paper with a width approximately equal to the thickness of the handle. This is necessary for compaction so that the handle is well fixed on the axis. Moreover, you need to glue it with tape at both ends of the tape.

Lubricate the tip with the paper wrapping with glue and insert it into the hole in the handle. Then glue the 6th cardboard circle (without a hole) on top. And we glue a strip of corrugated cardboard around the handle, having previously separated its top layer.

We insert the finished handle into the hole in the door.

We finally assemble the lock mechanism. Wrap a strip of paper around the protruding tip of the axle.

We put a movable disk (of 2 circles) on the tip of the axle, lubricated with glue, and glue the last circle on top, aligning the holes. We insert (and glue) a piece of skewer with a paper seal into the hole so that its free tip protrudes about 6 mm.

We put a cardboard strip (connecting rod) on the wooden pins. The mechanism of our cardboard lock is ready for use. But to ensure that the connecting rod does not fly off, you can stick a piece of cardboard on top of the pins.

Now you can close the box and check the functionality of the lock.

2. Door hinges.

As usual, we start by preparing part developments ( patterns 12 and 13).

Glue the top and bottom parts of the loops.

The rod, which will act as the axis of rotation, will be made from cardboard twisted into a roll. And to give greater rigidity, we wrap the cardboard on a wooden skewer 57 mm long (this size should be clarified by measuring the depth of the loop nests).

We wind and glue the cardboard strip. The result is a rod with a thickened end. The diameter of the thickening must be determined by the hole in the upper part of the loop (i.e. simply try it on) and, if necessary, wind an additional piece of cardboard strip. The rod should fit snugly in the top socket of the loop.

Then you also need to tightly wrap a cardboard strip around the second half of the rod, but without gluing it. And insert this end of the rod into the lower slot of the loop (there is also no need to glue it, but the cardboard roll should fit very tightly), and remove the rod itself.

After this, lubricate the thickened end of the rod with glue and insert it into the socket of the upper part of the loop.

Our loops are ready. Be sure to place them on the table surface and check how the rotation occurs.

In our case, to align the loops, it was necessary to additionally glue a piece of cardboard (backing) to their lower parts.

3. Safe body.

By using templates 1-5 and 8 transfer the drawing of the body layout onto a sheet of cardboard (according to the diagram). It is assumed that the development will be seamless. But if there is no sheet of cardboard of a suitable size, then you can break the scan into parts. So, our safe has a separate bottom cut out. And the layout looked like this:

Glue the frame onto the inner surface ( template 7). Then, at the level of the lock slider, you need to glue 2 cardboard rectangles. This is necessary to ensure that the locked door does not dangle. The thickness of such a lining can be adjusted by flattening the corrugation of one (or both) rectangles.

Glue the side walls of the case together. Then we glue the bottom - outside and inside ( template 6).

Now we install the door in its place and glue the hinges.

In practice, it turned out that the hinges were not rigid enough, especially their lower parts. As a result, the door may deviate slightly from vertical when opening. This is our first such experiment, and, apparently, we chose not the most successful option for loops to be implemented in cardboard. Although in general this is not critical. Just be aware.

And finally, all that remains is to glue the housing cover.

Although the main function of such an opening box is, of course, gaming. Volodya himself comes up with “breakdowns” and immediately successfully fixes them

This is an indispensable item for protecting jewelry from weak robbers and cats. Heavy-duty five-layer cardboard is used. This can be found at home from old boxes. Let's start with the combination lock. You will need a cylinder mechanism, a deadbolt and a lever that connect together. Tools – pencil, ruler, knife, glue gun.

We have three cardboard circles with a radius of 4 cm. You can experiment with any sizes. The main thing is to start with a prototype. Using paper, a pen and a glue stick, we make the first stage for the base of the mechanism. It turns out to be a telescope. Holes were made in the planes and it should look like this.

The front circle is on the smallest tube, which acts as a connection between them. At 3 there are two remaining circles. We divide the largest tube into 2 and make notches. Then we fix four protrusions with the help of which the parts will interact with each other. The safe is a relatively new invention. The first modern types appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. Only in the mid-20th century with combination locks. One of the first had more than a million combinations. A life hack like this could theoretically take about 2000 years.

This tutorial will show you how to make a safe with a combination lock out of cardboard. Follow these steps in this instruction if you want to repeat and watch the video to enjoy:
Materials and tools:
– 2 x cardboard 50x80 cm
– 1 meter x PVC pipes with a diameter of 12 mm
– 2 x pops – glue sticks for
hot glue
– metric ruler

Step 1: Making the Wheel




First cut the cardboard according to the following shapes:
– 3 circles with a diameter of 80 mm,
– 1 circle with a diameter of 60 mm,
– 1 rectangle 12×260 mm,
they are then glued perfectly superimposed along the same axis.
To install the gear teeth, I remove the top layer of the rectangle and glue the other piece to the perimeter of the gear housing.
We only need two gears: the first one to convert the rotational motion into linear motion. the second is used to change the direction of rotation

Step 2: Forming the Safe Door



Using a cutter, we start by cutting the outer frame to measure 34x42cm and then cut the cardboard to form a door measuring 25x31cm.

Step 3: Making the holes




To make all the holes needed in this project, you can simply use a pencil. The holes are necessary to enter the rotation axis of the gear and other locking wheels.
We only need 3 holes in this project.

Step 4: Fixing the Gear




Using a cutter, we start by cutting two 20mm pieces of round PVC pipe. A PVC tube with a diameter of 6 mm is the axis of rotation of two gears. The first gear is glued to the top gear and the second gear is glued to the safe door. The glue to use is hot glue.
You must pay attention to the alignment of the two gears.

Step 5: Making a Castle




Using a cutter, cut the 12mm diameter PVC tubes into the following lengths: 2x28cm, 18cm and 35mm.
I glued this together following the attached picture.
To build the stand mechanism, cut 2 rectangles from 12x6mm cardboard, removing the top layer to reveal the teeth. They are glued to the ends of the inner surfaces of two tubes. Please see the picture below.

Step 6: Forming the Wheel Lock





I start by cutting the cardboard into 4 30mm diameter circles. We will then cut each of the 3 circles into 3 pieces: two half circles and a central 14mm wide rectangular piece. The parts of the semicircle are glued to each other, as shown in the figure.

Step 7: Installation




This step is used to mount already assembled parts. Let's start by making two holes for the rotation axes of the two locking wheels, we can always use a pencil to perforate. After installing the two locking wheels, the tongue lock is installed in place as shown in the attached picture. we can if we want to build a box that covers the entire locking mechanism.

Step 8: Front of the Box Door



For each end of the three axes we glue a circle with a diameter of 25 mm. Then we glue two numbered wheels from 10 to 85, for example with a diameter of 35 mm, using hot glue.
Finally, we glue the opening lever on the third axis. As for the lever, you can choose any shape you like.

Step 9: Door Swing Solution



To secure and build the door swing system, I use two pieces of wooden sticks and insert them into the groove of the cardboard at a distance of 2 cm from the edge, as shown in the picture.

Step 10: Assembling the Box




Finally, we cut the cardboard into 5 rectangles, the dimensions of which are as follows:
– 2 rectangles 30×34 cm
– 2 rectangles 42×30 cm
– 1 rectangle 42x34 cm. Then
we glue them together with hot glue, always maintaining a perpendicular angle between them.
