What is a transparent lip liner for? Choosing a lip liner

    Lip Liner, YSL Beauté

A new pencil from YSL Beauté will help you to securely fix the contour of lipstick, gloss, varnish or any other product on your lips. The creamy texture spreads easily and provides long-lasting color. Does not smear during the day. Perfect for evening makeup or photo shoots.

The pencil from Giorgio Armani not only guarantees a clear contour, but also adds volume to the lips so that they look fuller. Try three ways of applying: outline your lips to create a contour, apply over gloss for a soft and natural makeup, or paint over your lips completely, and then complement with lipstick for a brighter and more lasting make-up (you can finish it with lip gloss if necessary) ...

Lip liner with brush Contour Pro, Lancôme

Use Lancôme Lip Liner to prevent lipstick or gloss from spreading and keep your makeup fresh throughout the day. The creamy texture adheres gently to the skin, and the brush paired with the pencil helps to make the contour look natural (blend the contour with the brush after applying the pencil). For a richer, matte finish, paint over the entire lip with a pencil.

Lip liner 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil, Urban Decay

In addition to the fact that this pencil from Urban Decay is responsible for the sharpness of the lips and the durability of makeup throughout the day, it cares for the skin - the formula (by the way, waterproof!) Contains vitamin E, jojoba oil and cottonseed oil. To prevent the lipstick from spreading and staying as long as possible, circle your lips along the contour with a transparent pencil (in the shade of Ozone) - it will fill even the smallest cracks. And for a brighter and more lasting makeup, use the pencil as a base - before lipstick or lip gloss. There are as many as 50 shades in the palette.

Lip liner Slim Lip Pencil, NYX Professional Makeup

If you are looking for a pencil that perfectly performs all its functions and does not dry out the skin at the same time, take a closer look at the Slim Lip Pencil from NYX Professional Makeup. Nourishing formula with vitamin E and three types of oils (coconut, shea and jojoba) nourishes the skin and relieves flaking. To make the lips visually more plump, drawing a contour with a small indent will help. For a more lasting make-up, first apply lipstick to your lips, then outline and blend.

  • Lip liner Color Sensational, Maybelline New York

Another long-lasting lip makeup is a pencil from Maybelline New York. Firstly, it gives a rich color, secondly, it is easy to apply and does not dry the skin (in the composition - vitamin E), and thirdly, it does not allow lipstick to smear and blur during the day. Apply only along the contour or over the entire surface of the lips as a lipstick, blending thoroughly.

How to handle lip liner? Several rules

    A matter of technology

Apply the pencil to lips at a 45-degree angle. And do not press hard on it - otherwise, when the lipstick wears off after a snack, bright lines may remain on the lips. Also, remember that if you have to make an effort to get the color out of the pencil, it may indicate that the lead is dry and you need a new pencil.

    At the right angle

To assess how clear and even the contour lines turned out, press your chin against your neck and look in the mirror - this way you will see the line of the upper lip from a different angle and you can control the result. To “monitor” the lower lip, lift your chin up.

    Contrasting shadows

If you want to make your lips look plumper while keeping your makeup natural, accentuate the center of the lower lip and the tick mark with a darker shade of top pencil. After that, blend the dark lines using a lighter shade of pencil.

    Neutral shades

Another way to add visual dimension to your lips is to use a contour pencil. Contour lips not directly along the contour, but slightly going beyond its borders.

    Lipstick forward

In what order should you apply lipstick and lip liner? To understand exactly where you need to draw the contour, first apply lipstick, and only then a pencil. If the lipstick starts to wear off, then along with the pigment of the lip liner.

    Saturated color

The pencil allows you not only to achieve the optimal shape of the lips, but also to make the makeup rich and long-lasting. To do this, you need to shade your lips over the entire surface and either leave it like this (the effect will turn out to be matte), or apply lipstick or gloss over the pencil coating.

    On the edge

Do not sharpen the pencil too hard - there is a risk of scratching the skin. Plus, it's not very convenient if you want to get slightly feathery lines rather than sharp and crisp lines.

    Don't forget about cleansing

The tip of the pencil should be wiped off with a dry napkin or paper towel every time you use it - especially if you've applied the pencil over lipstick or glitter.

    • Choose a lip liner if you want to make your lips visually fuller.
    • To add visual volume to your lips, choose a pencil shade slightly darker than your natural lip color. Paint over the outline of the lower lip, going slightly beyond its outline.
    • A highlighter will help to "enlarge" the upper lip - use it to highlight the "tick" above it.

I want to tell you about one more permanent resident of my cosmetic bag - this is a colorless lip liner. Some time ago, I began to notice that almost all lipsticks and glosses began to blur. And it's not pretty at all. And I thought about the outline. But as I presented the number and shades of my lip products, I realized that I won't buy pencils for all of them, and, in my opinion, it is difficult to guess perfectly with the color. And my friend advised me to try a colorless pencil. Why is it needed and why is it better than colored ones?

A colorless pencil, like tint pencils, is designed to prevent lipstick or gloss from spreading beyond the contours of the lips. It is usually quite dense in texture. What do I like about a colorless pencil? The first is logical - you don't need to buy dozens of different lip pencils, one is enough. Second - it fits all my lipsticks - it's also logical. Third, I like that with this tool I can achieve a not too graphic, but at the same time, a clear contour of the lips. And the fourth, important for me, its quality - it does not change the color or texture of lipstick. More than once I saw when a dark pencil was chosen under a light lipstick or vice versa. Or a glitter pencil is placed under the matte lipstick. I have no such ugliness - on the lips is visible only evenly lying lipstick, without spreading.

How do I use this pencil? I do not follow my lips exactly along the contour, as is usually the case with his colored brothers, but OUTSIDE the lips. This is important because the pencil itself has no color, and if you do not want to visually reduce the size of your lips, it is better to draw a line a little further than the edge of the lips. Then I paint my lips exactly to this colorless contour and that's it! I forget about him for the rest of the day! At work, I talk a lot, drink tea, have a snack. I always correct lipstick or gloss, but not a pencil. And everything stays fine until the very end of the day.

It remains to add that I have tried pencils from different companies, I think it will be useful to mention some of them. My very first was from the pharmacy 36 and 6. It cost only 99 rubles, and served perfectly until his last days, only under the very stumps the rod began to break off. Moderately soft, odorless and mother of pearl. My favorite lip pencil company, Be Yu, also makes a colorless pencil. It is, of course, more expensive, but it is softer and more pleasant. The price is about 250 rubles. And, for example, a slightly different pencil from Eva (price about 90 rubles). It is very pearlescent. I bought it in the hope of visually enlarging my lips. I thought to put them a "tick" above the upper lip, but it is too noticeable. Then I came up with this - I circle my lips with it, as with an ordinary colored one - along the contour, and on top, right on top of it, I paint with gloss. The contour is kept slightly worse, but the lips acquire the same desired visual volume.

I will also name brands that definitely have such pencils. These are Isa Dora, ELF, Bourjois, Make Up Forever, El Corazon, Mary Kay, Artdeco, Dr. Pierre Ricaud, many, many others. Only I would advise you to carefully study the lead. There are completely transparent, waxy, and there are pale pink or even white. There are also mother-of-pearl. Choose what is right for you. And they also say that for the same purpose, you can use a colorless wax pencil for eyebrows. I personally have not tried it, but why not?

The use of a lip liner has many advantages: a clear contour, an even shape, a visual increase in volume or its reduction, long-term makeup without drips. But for this it is important to choose the right product.

There are several types of cosmetic products that differ in texture, density, and appearance:

  • Wax or silicone - perfectly smooth the surface, suitable as a base for age-related make-up or when skin with a lot of creases.
  • Wooden or automatic - the latter does not need to be sharpened.
  • Waterproof - long-lasting on the lips, but can dry the skin.
  • In the form of a stick - suitable for replacing lipstick, gently lay down, level the surface and take care of.
  • Colorless pencil - for bright lipstick, so that it does not spread, and the outline is not clear.
  • Nude - suitable for increasing volume, evens out the shape or hides imperfections.
  • White - for volumizing or as a highlighter for the upper lip.

Manufacturers who make quality lip pencils include care ingredients: vitamin E, beeswax, aloe, oils and others.

When choosing, it is important to consider the following points:

  • thin - for the contour, thick you can make the base for the labial;
  • high-quality pencil does not crumble, does not break, medium soft;
  • color for lipstick: pencil tone on tone - a classic make-up, colorless - for an even contour, lighter than lipstick - to increase volume, darker visually reduce volume.

Rules for using a pencil: start from the middle of the lip and lead to the corners, maintaining symmetry, you can shade a little with a brush / ear stick, and then use lipstick. A slight indentation on top of the outline will visually increase the volume.

If you don't have one, you can replace the lip liner with a neutral eyeliner.

The benefits of lip liner in makeup

At first glance, such a small and inconspicuous element of a cosmetic bag has many necessary qualities. It is advisable that every woman has not one, but at least 2-3 options for a lip pencil. And it's not just about matching the color to the tone of the lipstick. It performs the following important functions:

  • Highlighting the clear contour of the lips... This is especially important for bright and rich lipstick shades that do not “forgive” blemishes. With age-related makeup, it does not allow lipstick to spread over folds and wrinkles.
  • Form alignment... The human face is asymmetrical, including the lips. Often, the left and right sides can have different heights and thicknesses. This is noticeable when using bright lipstick or in photographs.
  • Increase in volume... To do this, it is not at all necessary to draw far beyond the natural border, you just need to draw a line along the border itself and add glitter. This technique is often used by leading makeup artists.
  • Reduce volume... This effect is achieved by the owners of too plump lips or those who have only one that stands out much more. This can be done by drawing a line inside the natural contour.

If you cannot find a shade to match the bright and juicy lipstick, then you can use a brush and draw a contour with it
  • Surface and base leveling... The waxy texture of the pencil will keep your makeup lasting longer. Lipstick lays down more evenly than on "bare" lips.

Which one is better to choose by texture, density, manufacturer

Cosmetic stores offer a wide range of lip pencils. Each girl will be able to choose a suitable option. You can understand which lip liner is better to choose after determining the purpose of use.

Products are generally categorized into the following types:

  • Wax or silicone... These pencils perfectly level the surface, making it smooth and even. They can serve as a base for lipstick in age-related makeup or when the skin has too many creases.
  • Waterproof for long-lasting makeup... It will not need to be tweaked during the day and after snacks. However, they are harder and must be applied carefully and carefully. Lip makeup will take longer than usual. They can also dry out the skin a bit and require special makeup removers.

Catrice Matte Lip artist
  • In the form of a stick... Fashionistas are often used as a substitute for lipstick, especially matte. It lays down softly, evens out the surface and takes care of them.
  • Colorless pencil... Most often it can have a wax base. It is used for bright lipstick so that it does not spread, and the contour is not so clear.
  • A nude pencil just right for adding volume... With it, you can even out the shape of the lips or hide any imperfections.
  • A white pencil is also used to add volume or as a highlighter for the top... They are outlined with a natural contour, slightly going beyond the boundaries, then shaded and powdered. The effect is impressive.

When buying a lip liner, it is important to pay attention to the composition of the product. A good product contains caring components. After all, lips do not secrete fat to protect the surface, therefore, they are the first to suffer from the effects of the environment: wind, scorching sun, frost. The composition should contain vitamin E, beeswax, aloe, oils: castor, shea, coconut, almond, proteins.

Also, the consultant in the store is sure to talk about the density. They are hard, medium and soft. This affects the quality of the makeup. Do not choose a pencil that is too soft, as it will melt and spread over the lips, making the image sloppy. And too hard can scratch and make it difficult to apply makeup. The lead should draw a dense, even line, not crumble.

Thickness is important. Only the outline is usually drawn thin. And the thick one is more versatile, it can be used as a base for gloss or lipstick, completely painting over the surface.

The manufacturer plays an important role. Since sooner or later the pencil is "eaten" from the lips, it is impossible to buy funds of dubious origin. It is better to give preference to proven firms. It is also important to keep track of the expiration date of the product.

How to choose the right color for your lipstick

Having decided on the texture, the girls are lost in the selection of the color of the lip pencil. There are several methods for this:

  • The most win-win is tone on tone. Many manufacturers have a full range of pencil shades for their line of lipsticks. Therefore, the easiest way is to buy these products in pairs from the same company. The pencil can be used both for the outline and as a base. You can slightly increase the volume.
  • If you can't find native shades, then you can choose a little darker. But the lips will become thinner. It is important to note here that the pencil should be darker in tone, but of the same color. Sharp contrast has long been irrelevant makeup.
  • The color may be slightly lighter than the lipstick tone. In this case, you can slightly increase the volume. But again, the difference should be minimal.
  • The most practical and simple one is a colorless or nude wax pencil. They can only draw the outline, not letting the lipstick flow, or even out the texture of the lips.

There are several proven ways to match a pencil to match your lipstick. It all depends on what effect you want to achieve.

Lip liner makeup basics

Correct application will make your makeup look neat and more durable. The drawing algorithm is as follows:

  • Draw a check mark on the upper lip.
  • Draw clear lines in the corners and connect everything.
  • Draw on the lower lip in the same way: first in the center, then in the corners. Then they connect all the lines, clearly observing the symmetry.
  • Next, the entire surface needs to be shaded. To make the contour more natural, it is slightly shaded with a brush. At the end, apply the lipstick or gloss itself. So that it does not spread and does not leave marks on the teeth, the lips are blotted with a napkin.

Sharpening correctly is half the battle

Pencils are divided into wooden and automatic. The latter do not need sharpening, since the lead is rather thin. But the wooden one needs to be leveled constantly, otherwise it will be difficult to achieve a clear line. For sharpening, you must use special sharpeners. They are sold in every beauty store.

Makeup artists advise putting the pencil in the freezer for literally 5-10 minutes before the process. After that, it will be enough to twist it in a sharpener a couple of times so that the end becomes sharp. In addition, the lead will not crumble and break, which is very economical.

Alternative to lip pencil

If suddenly your favorite pencil runs out or is missing, then there are a couple of life hacks on how to replace it. Namely:

  • A neutral eye pencil. They are usually firmer and outline sharper.
  • If you cannot find a shade to match the bright and juicy lipstick, then you can use a brush and draw an outline with it.

Lip liner plays an important role in makeup. It helps to change the shape and volume, to make the outline clearer and more accurate. Among a wide variety of brands and types of pencils, every girl can find a suitable product.

Try not to buy lip pencils in the markets or in passages - it is unlikely that the storage conditions of the product are met there, and the slightest violations can affect your health.

HOW TO CHOOSE A LIP PENCIL: COMPOSITION

A good lip liner should not only be easy to apply and keep the lipstick in the contours of the lips, but also have caring components in the composition. Due to the fact that the lips do not secrete their own protective layer of fat, they are the first to be negatively influenced by the external environment. Therefore, absolutely all lip products should protect them and take care of their delicate skin.

The pencil should contain vitamin E, beeswax, aloe, castor, palm, almond or almond extract.

HOW TO CHOOSE A LIP PENCIL: COLOR

When it comes to lip liner color, there are two methods for matching it. The first is to choose a pencil to match the color of your lipstick. In such a case, the shades should match as best as possible. Remember, if you can't find a tone-on-tone pencil, choose a shade slightly darker than lipstick. But not lighter.

The second method is simpler. Within its framework, you choose a pencil to match the color of your lips and use it regardless of the color of lipstick or lip gloss.

A lip liner is an indispensable attribute in the cosmetic bag of every self-respecting woman. Beautiful lips cannot be imagined without a clear contour and a seductive shape. A pencil can literally transform your smile, with or without lipstick. The choice of contour pencils is so great that every girl can choose the option that is optimal in color and texture for herself. But how to navigate the characteristics of this cosmetic product?

The contour pencil is primarily responsible for the durability of lip makeup.

What kind of contour pencils are there?

If you can't imagine your lip makeup without using a pencil, then take a closer look at the range of contouring products and determine which pencil you need.

Material

  • Wooden pencil. A classic pencil with a lead, which is made using resins and wax, thanks to which it glides gently on the lips without scratching them and giving out color evenly. The advantage of a wooden pencil is that it is economical and can be sharpened as you wish. This type of pencil is the hardest and is capable of drawing thin and clear lines. Ease of use depends on the wood from which the pencil is made - the softer the breed, the more comfortable it is to apply paint to the skin. The main drawback of a wooden pencil is its fragility and the need for constant sharpening.
  • Plastic pencil. The ink rod is placed in a tube with an automatic mechanism. This pencil is softer and more comfortable than a wooden one. No sharpening of the lead is required as the texture of the automatic pencil resembles lipstick. The obvious advantage of plastic pencils is their ease of use - the rod is pulled out of the tube with just one push or scrolling. But this function is not without its drawbacks, because often automatic pencils cannot be screwed back. Also, excessive twisting may cause the pencil to break.

Colour

  • Color pencil. This contouring agent must be carefully matched to the color of the lipstick. As a rule, a colored pencil is well pigmented and can significantly extend the durability of the products applied on top of it - lipstick or gloss. Also, with the help of a colored pencil, you can set the tone by drawing not only the contour, but also the entire surface of the lips, and applying a translucent lipstick on top.
  • Nude pencil. Available in several versatile shades. A beige pencil can be very useful when you need to visually narrow your lips or radically change their shape. With a nude pencil, you can give your lips a natural but completely different shape.
  • White pencil. Used by professional makeup artists to visually enlarge the lips. Most often, a white pencil contains microscopic shimmering particles that work as a highlighter - scatter light and lubricate the border of the lip contour. You can draw the upper part of the lips with a white pencil, creating a natural effect of the lips with a bow. You can also use it to create beautiful highlights in the center of the lips, making them look fuller and sexier.
  • Colorless pencil. The uniqueness of this tool lies in the fact that you no longer need to select a pencil to match the lipstick. With a transparent pencil, you can securely adhere the contour, and the lips will look natural. And for fans of gloss, a transparent pencil will be a godsend, because the spreading of lip gloss will be a thing of the past.

Additional properties

  • Silicone pencil. In appearance, it resembles a colorless pencil, but performs a different function and is significantly different in composition. Silicone pencil contains a large amount of wax, natural resins and cosmetic silicone, with the help of which the wrinkles and unevenness of the lips are filled. The silicone pencil is ideal for aging makeup as it instantly transforms lips, leaving them smooth and plump.
  • Waterproof pencil. This type of contour pencil is suitable for busy women who work all day and don't have enough time to tint their lips regularly. You will have to suffer with drawing a contour with such a pencil, since it is harder than other pencils, but the result in the form of many hours of durability cannot but rejoice. However, it should be remembered that a waterproof pencil requires a special makeup remover, since it is not so easy to wash it off.
  • Pencil lipstick. The most convenient pencil for drawing. It is much thicker than a regular contour pencil and looks more like a lipstick in a stick. The hardness of the lead is medium and provides at the same time easy application, good durability and the ability to draw the contour. Of course, the contour will not turn out thin and even, as with the help of a regular pencil, but it is quite suitable for creating quick makeup.

The harder the pencil, the more durable and clearer the finished makeup will be.

How to choose a lip pencil?

So, having dealt with the assortment of lip contour pencils, you can start choosing the most suitable option. If a bright lip color is an integral part of your image, then feel free to buy a colored automatic or wooden pencil, matched to match or darker than your lipstick. If the choice fell on a wooden pencil, be sure to test it on your hand and determine if its hardness and color saturation are right for you. Consider the following:

  • An overly soft pencil, even with absolute comfort of application, can float on the lips and smudge the lipstick.
  • A lead that is too hard holds the color longer, but can scratch and dry out the delicate skin of the lips.

When choosing a plastic pencil, carefully examine the mechanism. It must be made with high quality, otherwise the pencil may break at the most inopportune moment. If you prefer pastel shades of lipstick and translucent gloss, then take a closer look at a colorless and silicone pencil. With their help, you can create a clear contour when using lipstick of any shade. And if you have wrinkles on your lips, a silicone pencil will help to completely hide them.

When choosing a pencil, pay attention to the composition of the product. Contrary to popular belief that contour pencils consist only of coloring pigments, expensive pencils often contain vitamins and nutrients. If your lips are prone to chapping and dryness, a pencil with vitamins A and E, natural oils and herbal extracts will be the best way to help nourish and restore the skin of your lips.
