How to clean dark silver. Toothpaste or toothpaste for cleaning silver. How to achieve shine after brushing

Silver - a metal not as expensive as gold, but beautiful and practical in everyday life. Over time, it fades and darkens under the influence of moisture and hydrogen sulfide. But on the other hand, you can clean the blackness of silver at home using the means at hand. However, the methods for cleaning cutlery, jewelry and gemstones will vary.

Why does silver darken

Contrary to superstition, silver does not darken from damage and not from the evil eye. The dark layer on the surface of the noble metal is the result of the interaction of oxygen and sulfur compounds. It causes an oxidative process with the formation of silver sulfide - a thin dark coating.

Sulfur is part of human sweat. And if we take into account that during stress and certain diseases we sweat more intensely, then we can say that the darkening of silver jewelry is an indirect sign that not everything is in order with health. In addition, sulfur is found in cosmetic products: it can be found in ointments, creams, and special products for problem skin care. This chemical element is also present in the atmosphere.

Another problem is the tarnishing and loss of the original shine of the silver. This is due to dust, greasy deposits after skin contact. Much of the shine of silver depends on the storage method. It is best to keep it in a box in plastic bags or foil. If you often wear body jewelry made of silver, try to take them off before sports training, going to the saunas and baths, as well as before applying cosmetics.

Silverware

The most suitable way to remove blackness from silverware is to boil it in baking soda and aluminum foil. Using this method, you can quickly clean an entire set - provided that the dishes in which you will boil can accommodate it.

Silver and aluminum make up a galvanic pair, and if placed in an alkaline solution, they will corrode. Thus, the foil is freed from the oxide film, which it is coated with in production, and the sulfur ions leave the silver and transfer to the aluminum foil. As a result of this chemical reaction, darkened silver spoons, forks and knives acquire their original shine and purity.

To clean the appliances in this way, put a saucepan of a suitable size on the fire, cover the bottom with food foil and fill with a soda solution at the rate of 3 tsp. soda in 450 ml of water. When the water boils, add the silver to the bottom of the dish. After clarifying the cutlery, remove it from the dishes, rinse it with clean water and wipe it dry. Instead of baking soda, you can use powdered citric acid in about the same proportion.

Jewelry without stones

To clean silver from blackness at home, you can use a standard arsenal of home remedies. It includes laundry soap, dishwashing detergent, ammonia, tooth powder, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and vinegar.

Laundry soap or dish detergent is used to remove the grease film. This, in turn, is formed when jewelry comes into contact with the skin. For processing, you can prepare a soapy solution from any product, lower the jewelry there for 30 minutes, rub it a little with a sponge, then rinse under clean water and dry with a soft cloth. You can also make soapy gruel. Rub the shavings of laundry soap, dilute with a little hot water and soak the jewelry when the shavings swell. Jewelry can be kept in soapy water from 15 minutes to 10 hours, depending on the intensity of the pollution.

Ammonia, table vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide bleach silver. Salmon is used in different ways. If the contamination is moderate, apply it to a woolen cloth and wipe the garment with it. If the metal has darkened considerably, prepare a weak aqueous solution of ammonia (1:10), soak the jewelry in it for a few minutes and wipe it with flannel. Do not leave products in solution for more than an hour. For stubborn dirt, immerse the silver in undiluted ammonia for 15 minutes, then rinse and dry.

To clean silver at home with vinegar, take a 9% solution and immerse the silver items in it for 10 minutes. Then wipe the items with a soft cloth. Vinegar also helps remove mold.

Hydrogen peroxide removes the gray-green bloom on silver earrings. Drop a small amount directly onto the dirt and wait for the peroxide to stop foaming. You can then wipe the earrings with a clean cloth. It will also be helpful to use hydrogen peroxide on your earlobes to prevent re-contamination of your jewelry.

Baking soda and tooth powder are abrasive to clean. They are applied to a cloth or sponge, and then gently wipe the product. This method should not be overused as scratches may remain on the metal.

Jewelry with stones

It is more difficult to clean silver from blackness if the item is inlaid with precious stones. Each stone has its own characteristics of hardness, which can be found using the Mohs mineralogical scale. The method of processing silver must be selected depending on the index of the stone.

If the index of the stone on the Mohs scale is lower than 5, then it can only be cleaned with soapy water and in no case use abrasives. Such fragile minerals include graphite, ulexite, muscovite, amber, biotite, jet, chrysocolla, rhodochrosite, fluorite, malachite, coral, and pearls.

In addition to hardness, it must be borne in mind that minerals can change color under unfavorable conditions. For example, topaz cannot be processed in products that contain chlorine, as well as soaked in hot water and boiled.

The third important factor is the way the stone is fixed. If the stone is glued and not sealed, then the product must not be soaked. Only dry cleaning is permissible - wiping with a cotton pad dipped in one or another product.

To clean silver at home without worrying about damaging it, you can purchase professional jewelry processing products. Such pastes, for example, are sold under the brands Aladdin, Silbo, Talisman. As a rule, such products effectively remove plaque and do not damage precious and semi-precious stones. Apply a small amount on a soft cloth or cotton swab (for hard-to-reach places, take a cotton swab or soft brush), rub in the product gently and without effort, then remove excess and polish the product with a cloth to a mirror-like shine. At the final stage, the product must be washed with water and a gentle detergent, dried and only then used.

It is not difficult to clean silver from blackness at home. For this, you can use both improvised means and professional pastes. But if you doubt that you can cope with the task on your own, or when it comes to expensive and status items, it is better to use the services of a jeweler.

How to prevent darkening of silver

1. Make it a habit to always wipe your jewelry or kitchen utensils after contact with water. If the metal is wet, it will darken soon.

2. Valuable jewelry is best kept in a special jewelry box. Always put jewelry in this box after wearing.

3. Be sure to remove valuable items before taking water treatments. Also, jewelry that you wear on your hands should be removed when washing dishes and home cleaning.

4. If you do not use the products for a long time, it is recommended to wrap them in foil. A simple move will completely protect silver from all sorts of factors.

Darkening of silverware is a common problem. To solve it, you can use proven methods. If these are valuable jewelry with precious stones, it is better to entrust the work to a professional.

Silver is popular for a reason. This noble metal is much cheaper than gold, but no less wearable, in addition, it has antiseptic properties, is in harmony with all skin colors and various clothes, and is perfectly complemented by precious stones.

Its only drawback is that under the influence of high humidity and hydrogen sulfide, which is in the air, silver loses its luster and darkens over time. At the same time, you can return the metal to its original appearance on your own at home without much effort.

Toolkit

Consider how to clean your silver at home. There are several means by which silver is cleaned:

  • toothpaste or powder;
  • a mixture of salt and soda;
  • ammonia solution;
  • table vinegar;
  • citric acid;
  • potato water and foil;
  • special cleaning agents.

The choice of a particular cleaning method depends on a number of factors:

  1. inlaid with precious or semi-precious stones;
  2. sample number and the presence of impurities;
  3. the degree of darkening of the metal.

Paste or powder

For a long time, the most popular method of cleaning products with toothpaste or powder. So how to clean silver from blackness with their help?

To do this, you will need a soft woolen or just a thick fleecy napkin, as well as toothpaste or tooth powder diluted to a pasty consistency.

A small amount of paste or powder is applied to a napkin, after which the product is rubbed in a circular motion. Often a toothbrush is used for cleaning, but despite the higher efficiency, it is better to use a napkin.

Since silver is a soft metal, it should not be cleaned with hard, hard objects that could deform it or simply rub off the silver dusting. In addition, hard objects can scratch stones or remove them altogether.

This method is suitable regardless of the sample of metal and stone inlay. Previously, there was no doubt about the effectiveness of this method, but now, due to a significant deterioration in the quality of toothpaste and powder, it is increasingly losing its popularity.

Salt and soda

An equally effective and affordable cleaning method using salt and soda. These tools can be used in two ways.

A mixture of salt and soda is diluted with a small amount of water to a liquid slurry. After that, the product is immersed in this composition and wiped with a soft napkin or a bandage rolled in several layers until it gives it its original shine and color.

50 grams of soda and the same amount of salt are dissolved in a liter of water. Bring the solution to a boil, then immerse the metal in it for 15-30 seconds. Then we take it out and wipe it with a soft cloth.

This method can only be used for homogeneous products, without impurities and precious stones, for example, a silver chain.

A clear advantage of the method is its simplicity, speed and low labor intensity. A piece of baking foil can be immersed in the bottom of the container with the solution.

Also just a warm solution of salt and soda is used, in which the silver object is immersed for 5-10 minutes. After that, the product turns white again and regains its shine. You can clean the metal surface separately with salt or soda.

Ammonia solution

Cleaning silver with ammonia or ammonia solution is also often used. There are three cleaning methods in total, depending on the degree of soiling.

Wipe the silver with a wool napkin to which an aqueous solution of ammonia is applied. Then wipe the item again with a clean, dry cloth.

In this way, you can clean items with precious or semi-precious stones. Then polish the stone with a clean suede cloth.

In case of severe blackening, use a clean ammonia solution.

Immerse jewelry or cutlery for a few minutes in a solution of water and ammonia (in a ratio of 1:10), then wipe them with flannel. It is not recommended to leave the silver in the solution for more than an hour, it is advisable to observe the process, and when the product is cleaned, immediately remove it and wipe it.

If the item is excessively dirty, you can hold it in a clean ammonia solution, but no more than 15 minutes. Then take out, rinse and dry.

Now you know how to clean silver with ammonia. The disadvantage of this method is the sharp and repulsive smell of ammonia solution.

Vinegar solution

Silver items are immersed in a warm 9% solution of vinegar for ten minutes.

After taking out, you need to wipe them with a soft cloth. Products with minor dirt or inlaid with stones can simply be wiped with a napkin or cotton swab dipped in vinegar solution.

Vinegar also removes plaque, which is often formed on the surface of a precious metal.

Lemon acid

In a liter of water standing in a water bath, you need to dissolve 100 grams of citric acid and immerse a copper wire inside. Then put a metal product and boil for no more than half an hour. Rinse the recovered silver in clean water and dry.

This method is used only for simple products, without stone inlay.

Still not sure how to clean silver at home with foil? To do this, you need to boil the potatoes and drain the water from it, into which you place a piece of foil about 30 square meters in size. see When the water cools down, put silver items in it for a few minutes. After this procedure, they will shine like new.

Special means

You can purchase special products for polishing and cleaning silver in jewelry stores. They can even be used to clean jewelry with precious stones.

If you constantly clean jewelry with stones using the methods listed above, they can fade and become covered with a smoky coating, and the metal surface itself may crack.

The effectiveness of such funds is quite controversial, but there will be no harm from them for sure. Some manufacturers claim that they form a special film that protects the metal surface from further blackening.

To improve the efficiency of polishing, a combination of the listed agents can be used. For example, a mixture of tooth powder, ammonia solution and soda.

Also, in some cases, sulfuric acid, yogurt, lipstick, eraser, ash, hydrogen peroxide and other agents are used to clean silver.

Silver jewelry. Products made of beautiful noble white metal were first worn by Egyptian women over 5.5 thousand years ago, but even today, thousands of years later, they remain loved by women for their beauty and affordability. Silver rings, chains, earrings are several times cheaper than gold ones, although in appearance they are almost indistinguishable from white gold jewelry. Silver metal looks perfect with black clothing or clothing in cool colors. In a word, there is something to value bracelets and pendants made of it. But metal has one not very pleasant feature - silver turns black over time.

How do I clean my silver?

On the Internet, I found almost a dozen tips on this topic, up to the recommendation to purchase a special cleaning agent in the jewelry department. But I was only interested in the available means of returning the original purity to silver items. I decided to try the tips on my jewelry. Fortunately, there are many of them.

Purification of silver with citric acid

She poured 150 ml of hot water into an enamel plate. She put a piece of food foil. Foil is aluminum that makes up a galvanic pair with silver, and during a chemical reaction in a cleaning solution, sulfur ions that contaminate the silver product should go from decoration to clean aluminum foil. Added 1 tsp to the water. citric acid.

I dipped a silver ring into the resulting solution.

While reaching for the camera to capture the transformation of the ring, an almost instant reaction of the lemon with silver sulfides took place. As a result, the ring became completely light.

I washed the ring in running water,

i wiped it dry with a towel.

The only thing that confused was the lack of a beautiful shine in the metal. But this problem was solved with the help of a stationery eraser. But more on that later.

Note that not all silver jewelry can be cleaned with citric acid: if amber, pomegranate or other natural stone serves as an insert into a ring, pendant or bracelet, the product may suffer from the aggressive environment of the cleaning solution. To return to its original appearance, the jewelry will have to choose a more gentle method.

Purifying silver with baking soda solution

For the purity of the experiment, I decided to clean one earring as described above, and the second with a soda solution.

I poured the acidic water from citric acid into the sink, poured 150 ml of fresh water, added a teaspoon of soda.

The foil remained in the plate from the previous experiment. As soon as the soda solution boiled, I dipped a second earring into it.

The ear ring has cleared. Comparing the result, I can say: citric acid solution and soda solution are equally effective.

Cleaning silver with an eraser

An ordinary school eraser can work wonders: in the process of rubbing the eraser against the surface of a silver product, dark plaque is removed from the latter, a shine appears.

It was with the help of the eraser that it was possible to return the ring, cleaned with a solution of citric acid, shine like a brand new jewelry. The only drawback of the way to eliminate blackness with silver with an eraser is the inability to lighten hard-to-reach places.

Cleansing silver with lipstick

In any woman's cosmetic bag, there is lipstick that either does not match in color, or has managed to acquire an unpleasant odor. Having found such a lipstick at home, I smeared it on a silver ring.

She rubbed the surface of the product with a clean soft cloth (a piece of cloth would be ideal), rinsed with warm water. The ring was cleaned well, but this method of cleaning is not suitable for chains, carved jewelry or products of complex shape.

Purification of silver with a solution of vinegar

Starting my experiment, I had no doubts about success: both citric acid and acetic acid have the same principle of action. But an experiment is an experiment. She poured 150 ml of water into an enamel bowl, put a piece of foil in it and added 1 tbsp. l. vinegar 9%.

I dipped the chain into acidified water and “cooked” it for two minutes. I washed the chain and wiped it dry.

All silver jewelry in the house has acquired its original appearance.

Summing up, I can say: if you are thinking about the question of how to clean a silver chain, bracelet, rings or earrings without stones, then the least laborious thing is to do it with a citric acid solution. Citric acid does not fizzle like soda and does not have the pungent smell of acetic acid. You will have to puff on jewelry with natural stones, adding gloss with an eraser or lipstick. By the way, I remembered another "old-fashioned" way of cleaning silver: jewelry is well lightened and polished with an old toothbrush and chalk (tooth powder, toothpaste).

Silver jewelry, accessories or cutlery are highly sought after by women of all ages. But, despite all the nobility and sophistication of its appearance, this material has one big drawback - over time, the surface turns black and loses its former gloss. How to cope with a similar problem and clean silver from blackness at home - read below.

Causes of dark spots

Every owner of silver jewelry noticed that over time, silver begins to turn black. What is the reason for such a misfortune?

  1. Constant contact with cosmetics. That is why it is recommended to remove silver jewelry before applying the cream.
  2. High humidity in the storage area.
  3. Blackening can be a reaction from exposure to human sweat.
  4. Contact with rubber products and detergents is another cause of material deterioration.

The easiest method for cleaning silver is to buy a special cleaning agent or visit a jeweler. But such methods require an investment of money, and if you want to save money, then you should definitely think about how to clean silver at home. Below I will suggest a few effective options.

Effective cleaning methods

Unlike gold, cleaning silver is not a particularly difficult process. You can easily cope with it at home with the help of available tools.

To begin with, the product should be prepared for the procedure: rinse the accessory thoroughly in warm soapy water, clean its surface from grease and dirt residues. Use an old soft-bristled toothbrush to clean indentations and depressions much more efficiently..

In addition to the soap solution, you can first wash the silver with regular shampoo, then rinse the accessory thoroughly in clean water and wipe it dry. Such manipulations will help prepare the metal for the upcoming procedure, and will increase the effectiveness of the result.

Means 1. Ammonia

Many people use ordinary ammonia to update silver jewelry. The procedure for using it is as follows:

  • Make ammonia solution. To do this, dilute 10 ml of alcohol in half a glass of water.
  • Dip the accessory in the solution and let it sit for about 15-30 minutes.
  • Carefully monitor the process of peeling off the blackness, if the desired result is achieved, remove the jewelry.
  • Treat the surface with a soft, dry cloth.

If the item is only slightly darkened, it is not necessary to dip it in the solution. It is enough to moisten a sponge or cloth in ammonia and wipe the surface with it.

In a completely "neglected" case, it is better to dip the accessory in undiluted ammonia. Please note that it will need to be removed no later than after 10 minutes.

Means 2. Tooth powder

In the case when the silver has turned black, you can resort to the remedy that our grandmothers used - tooth powder. You will also need a thick, fleecy cloth.

First, slightly dampen the cloth, then dip it in powder. Start wiping the product, trying to remove dark ones from it. Keep in mind that cleaning with tooth powder should be slow and gentle, as silver is a soft metal and scratches very easily.

Instead of powder, you can use toothpaste - it works just as effectively.

  • Apply a thin layer over the entire surface and dry with a soft cloth. If an accessory with many small parts needs cleaning, use a toothbrush. You can only use ordinary white paste without additional impurities that can scratch silver.
  • Rinse the product thoroughly with clean water, otherwise white deposits will remain on it.
  • Wipe the surface with a dry, lint-free cloth and the accessory will shine like new.

Remedy 3. Soda

You can fix blackened silver with regular baking soda, found in every kitchen. I offer you two options to choose from:

  1. Dilute the soda with warm water so that you end up with a thick gruel. Dip a soft cloth in it and rub it over the garment until you get the desired result.
  2. With your own hands, pour 20 g of soda with a glass of water (about 250 g), put the solution on the fire. After boiling water, dip the silver accessory and a wad of foil into it. After 15 minutes, the item will look like new.

Means 4. Citric acid

Citric acid is another affordable and inexpensive remedy that can return jewelry to its original appearance. To do this, you will need:

  • dilute 100 g of citric acid with 500 ml of water;
  • put the liquid to heat in a water bath by dipping a small piece of copper wire into it;
  • after boiling water, immerse silverware in it for 15 minutes;
  • at the end of the procedure, rinse the accessories with water and polish with a cloth.

Means 5. Universal cocktail

If you are unsure of the best way to clean your silver, you can use the recipe below. It consists of several components mentioned above.

You will need to take:

  • in equal proportions salt and soda (10 g each);
  • 10 ml dishwashing liquid;
  • half a liter of water.

Mix all the ingredients together, pour into a small saucepan and put the silver in it. Put container on fire and bring to a boil. After half an hour, turn off the heat, cool the mass and remove the jewelry from it.

Rinse them and wipe with a soft cloth - the blackness will go away without a trace.

As a prevention

In order not to ask the question "how to clean silver", you need to constantly look after it. Also, do not forget about preventive measures to protect products from damage.

Caring for the material is simple, and the instructions below will show you how to take care of the precious metal:

  1. You should not leave silver jewelry on your hands during the process of the apartment or washing dishes.
  2. If the garments get wet, wipe them off immediately with a flannel cloth.
  3. It is better to store jewelry in a dry place, after hiding them in a box.
  4. If you rarely use silver items, wrap them in foil. This will prevent the oxidation process.

If you stick to these simple storage guidelines, you won't need to clean your silver often.

Finally

I have told you about the most effective ways to clean silver jewelry at home. Using one of them, you can easily return your jewelry or accessories to their original noble shine.
