How to dry leaves for crafts

Dry leaves are an excellent free raw material for various herbariums, applications, crafts. To keep your crafts for a long time, you need to learn how to properly dry the leaves. To do this, study the following rules:

  • Collect natural material only in dry weather.
  • Choose the color of the leaves yellow or green.
  • Pay attention to the appearance of the leaves. The most suitable will be smooth, beautiful and clean, without damage and blackheads.

There are several options for drying leaves. Consider each:

  • Long-term and high-quality method (takes 14-30 days). Carefully align each leaf and place it between the pages of a notebook, which must be placed in a large thick book. Press down on the top of the book with something heavy.
  • Accelerated. If you did not have time to make the preparation, and tomorrow you already need leaves, this method is the most suitable. Place the leaves between newspapers and iron with a warm iron 3-4 times. Then let the plants cool down and repeat the process a few more times. It is worth saying that when using this method, the plants become fragile and cannot be stored for a long time, green leaves immediately darken, and yellow ones remain bright.
  • Alternative. Some craftswomen got used to harvesting leaves with a hair dryer. They argue that with this method the plants do not darken, but there is a possibility that the leaves will curl up into a tube.

Ideas for creativity:

- Application.
A great idea for spending leisure time with your child! Have you already collected many beautiful fallen leaves and autumn flowers in the yard, dried it, made a colorful herbarium? Let's not stop there! Spread a large sheet of thick paper or cardboard on the table, lay out our "harvest" on it and put together an original composition, combining colors and different forms of natural materials ... You can glue the details of the autumn composition to the base with PVA glue (but it is better to use photo glue or gum arabic);

- Collage.
You can put together a layered bright collage with your child under the frame. The lower layer is large dark and brown leaves, then greenish, the upper layers are small bright contrasting leaves of red and yellow colors. Add dry autumn flowers to the collage, adding different shapes from them and get a beautiful volumetric composition.
Or you can add letters or words (as well as shapes) to the collage - tightly press a sheet of cardboard with cut letters to the glued composition and carefully cut out the letter pattern with a clerical knife (of course, by the hands of parents, not a child);

- An educational game for a child.
A great idea that your preschool kid will love! Glue a half of a fallen leaf on a sheet of paper (first cut the sheet vertically). The child's task is to draw the missing half of the sheet with a pencil (felt-tip pen). Encourage your child to choose a suitable pencil color and carefully look at the shape of the halves in order to accurately reproduce the mirror part of the composition. The most difficult option is a maple leaf, leave it for later and help the kid draw a little;

- Painted autumn leaves.
You can decorate both flat and voluminous leaf crafts with painting. For this work, use helium pens and felt-tip pens (with silver, gold, white and other colors). Bouquets with decorated artificial flowers will be fine and other interior objects;

- Bouquet of autumn leaves and dried flowers.
You will find information below how to fold flowers from maple leaves with your own hands and collect a bouquet from them. If you decorate such a bouquet with dried flowers and put it in a small wide vase, you will get an excellent compositional center for your room;

- A tree or topiary made of autumn materials.
Another great option for interior decoration. From the fallen branches, you can fold a small tree and decorate it with homemade flowers made from leaves. Or
fold the topiary with your own hands (see photo) by attaching a lot of such flowers to a floral ball (option: to a foam ball);

Helpful hints:

How to prepare autumn leaves for making crafts and appliques at home.

- for voluminous crafts in the form of flowers and bouquets.
We will not be able to fold voluminous crafts from dried leaves, since they are too brittle. Therefore, we will specially process the collected leaves. We separate the solution - 200 ml. glycerin per 400 ml. clean water. In a dense plastic bag, carefully put the leaves fallen from the trees and level them, then fill them with the prepared solution. The bag with the contents must be sealed tightly (with a heated knife) or sealed with adhesive tape. Leave this bag in a dark closet for 3-4 days, and then spread the leaves on a paper towel to dry. From these flexible leaves that retain their original appearance for a long time, you can add a variety of flowers (below - MK: how to make beautiful roses from maple leaves with your own hands);

- for flat autumn compositions (appliques, collages).

Leaves and flowers collected in autumn are best dried in massive magazines and reference books. The collected natural materials must be well pressed with a weighty load placed on top of the reference book.

How to dry autumn flowers for crafts and compositions:

a great way to dry large single flowers (roses, tulips, peonies) for making compositions. The temperature in the oven should not be very high - about 50-60 ° C. Watch the process carefully so that the flowers do not turn brown and do not lose their shape during drying;

- volumetric drying of flowers.

According to many experienced florists, this method of drying autumn flowers preserves their natural shape and color. The cut flower is placed in calcined dry sand for 4 weeks. A drawer with a fine mesh at the bottom and a pull-out bottom can be used as a container. Flowers with double and voluminous inflorescences (lilies, dahlias, roses) are placed in the sand with stems down, and with flat inflorescences-baskets (buttercups, chamomile, asters, forget-me-nots) - with stems up.

What tools and materials can be useful for making autumn crafts:

- Scissors.
Small scissors with blunt ends for a child and sharp long ones for an adult;

2. HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HANDS A BEAUTIFUL ROSE FROM DANGEROUS AUTUMN LEAVES

It is very easy to make such an artificial flower with your own hands! For work, prepare autumn maple leaves, strong thread, golden colors and sunflower oil. You can treat the leaves with a glycerin solution (see recipe above) for the longevity of the harvested craft.

For making a single flower, it is best to choose solid maple leaves. Roses from leaves will turn out to be quite large. 5-7 such crafts are enough to make a beautiful bouquet. You can use the same maple leaves as the leaves for this bouquet with artificial homemade flowers. Make the roses red and yellow.

So let's get to work:

- take a maple leaf and bend it in half (front side outward);

We bend the very tip and twist the leaf into a roll;

Take the second maple leaf of the same color, put the already twisted bud in its base (see photo);

Form a maple rose petal by bending the leaf and wrapping it tightly around the bud;

We wrap the third maple leaf in the same way. The more such rose petals there are, the more voluminous and larger the rose will turn out. Move each subsequent row down a little so that the flower looks blooming;

Just above the leaf stalks, we fix the craft with a thread;

Similarly, we will make 5-7 more of the same roses (yellow, red, greenish);

Lubricate maple roses with sunflower oil so that the bouquet retains its original appearance for a long time. Now you can cover the crafts with golden paint;

It remains to dip a few maple leaves into a small vase, and then form a beautiful bunch of artificial roses.

Decorating premises with natural materials is not an innovation in interior design for a long time. Decorating walls and pieces of furniture with a panel of dry leaves, topiary or other crafts can be done by anyone. DIY decor elements perform important functions. First of all, they bring positive energy and pleasant memories. And, of course, they enliven the interior.

We offer the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating a bouquet of dried leaves. Herbarium samples were collected in autumn thanks to a biology teacher. Children at school did their homework according to the educational program. After the lesson, there was a beautiful collection and a lot of extra leaves. By the way, some of them fell from a house plant. Ficus Benjamin was accidentally flooded with water. The flower dropped its foliage in protest.

So, let's put the album with neatly decorated herbarium copies aside, and we will deal with the remains. The quantity and color make it possible to make a bouquet with yellow flowers.

For crafts you will need:

  • colorful leaves,
  • thin twigs of trees,
  • petals of any colors (if there are no such, it's not scary),
  • pVA glue,
  • paints in gouache or watercolor with a brush.

Additionally, to decorate a vase will come in handy:

  • glass jar,
  • a piece of cloth
  • rubber,
  • satin ribbon.

To create a flower, we prepare a dense base, for example, a piece of cardboard. Apply PVA glue on it and apply the selected leaves in a circle. First, we work with large specimens.

We do the next tier in the same way, only we put smaller petals between the leaves of the first row.

Again, process the middle with a brush with PVA and glue real yellow flower petals. Such a move will immediately color the craft, make it bright. If there are no such petals, it does not matter, without them the finished flower will look no worse.

It's time to tackle the middle. There are several design options. You can glue a piece of black leather in the center or sprinkle the middle with semolina, and then paint it yellow with gouache. We decided to cut the center circle out of the fabric.

It turned out like this.

Leave the flower to dry for 30 minutes. We immediately get down to creating two more similar samples.

Now let's think about how to make a stem with leaves. Select suitable tree branches and paint over them with a brush with green gouache.

We put the finished stems on the windowsill. The bright sun will quickly dry up the water. After 10-15 minutes, you can continue working with the workpiece. Using PVA glue, attach the green leaves to the branches.

At the output, we get something like this.

Now you need to glue the dried ones to the finished stems. How do you like this beauty?

Oh yes! Forgot about the vase. We will also make it with our own hands. It was not for nothing that they collected jars, rubber bands and rags in the kitchen. The baby puree glass jar is stable enough. It will perfectly hold the bouquet and will not tip over.

We put the jar in the center of the fabric cut. We wrap the ends of the satin flap in it.

Press the fabric to the neck with a thin elastic band. Not very tight.

We hide the ugly elastic band behind the yellow ribbon. The bow can be left in front of the vase, but we were afraid of the excessive luridness of the craft.

I wanted to capture flowers against the background of a finished vase.

In principle, the work is over. We carefully put the flowers from the leaves in the jar, look for a place where we will leave this floral arrangement.

It turned out very nicely. The photo does not convey the naturalness of the materials. I think this is where the experiments with herbarium samples are just beginning.

  • Stapler.

Progress:

  1. In order to make a handicraft from leaves with our own hands quickly and beautifully, we need to take a plate and cut the bottom out of it with a knife. We now have the base for the wreath.
  2. We tear off the tails from the natural material used.
  3. We hold them with sharp corners up and begin to fold the edges towards the center in the form of tubes, and fix them in this position with a stapler.
  4. We make about 23 such blanks.
  5. We fasten the blanks with a stapler to the rim of the plate, the leaves should be evenly spaced in a circle. We make 2 rows of these so that there are no gaps.
  6. We attach small, even elements on top to close the corners.
  7. When all the components are attached, using a stapler we attach a burlap ribbon so that we get a beautiful spiral.
  8. On the reverse side, we cut off the extra corners so that the hand-made craft has a neat look.
  9. To decorate with an orange ribbon, we make a bow and attach it to the wreath in the part where you like best. And we make a loop from the same ribbon on which you can hang our wreath.
