How to choose feeding bottles. Rating of baby bottles for feeding newborns: which is better to choose - glass or plastic

Bottle-fed newborns will need a feeding bottle on their first day of life. Such devices are also needed during breastfeeding, the baby will drink water, juices, compotes and kefir from bottles. Special bottles are required for this, sets for children older than six months will differ from products for the smallest.

Feeding bottles - how much to buy

For artificers, the purchase of at least six bottles of different sizes will be a mandatory minimum. These are containers with nipples for mixtures of 250 ml, bottles of 100 or 150 ml are suitable for water. At least four different bottles will be needed with artificial feeding per day, so that family members have time to sterilize the dishes and prepare a nutrient mixture for the crumbs.

Breastfeeding does not eliminate the need for bottles. The baby will need to buy one or two small bottles of 100-120 ml for water, larger bottles can be taken on the road. They will also be needed when introducing complementary foods, but breastfeeding does not require large bottles. You can give water or dill water to the baby with a spoon.

When choosing a bottle, you should give preference to easy-to-use and safe containers. Therefore, it is better to purchase sets of well-known manufacturers, equipped with quality certificates. These products are made from environmentally friendly materials.

Which bottles to choose for a newborn

Narrow and tall bottles that are comfortable to hold are best suited. They are versatile, so the baby will be able to drink water from them or. A good choice would be all sorts of anti-colic bottles with valves and pistons that prevent swallowing air during feeding. For breastfed newborns, it is worth picking up round bottles with wide nipples - physiological models that resemble a mother's breast. Curved bottles are recommended for older babies, when the child can hold the container with kefir or mixture on his own. For the smallest, they are not suitable, because the curved type bottles are difficult to clean.

The bottle can have handles, a scale of milliliters. It is optimal if the divisions are convex, and not drawn, because the paint is quickly erased from frequent washing. The bottle must be unbreakable, so you should buy products made of practical plastic. Unlike glass, plastic bottles are lighter in weight. But over time, they can become cloudy.

Baby bottle nipples can be made from a variety of materials. The most popular nipples are made of latex and silicone. The former are less durable, but they are soft and elastic. Be aware that latex can cause an allergic reaction. Silicone nipples are stronger and easier to disinfect. The shape of the product may be slightly flattened or round. Round ones are more like a nipple, and flattened ones exclude the formation of an incorrect bite.

Feeding bottles for newborns are an indispensable thing for new parents. A bottle is needed when artificially feeding with a mixture, for supplementing with water or feeding the baby with expressed milk during the mother's absence. With the right selection, the child suffers less from colic and bloating and drinks from a bottle with pleasure. Modern bottles are closer to breastfeeding conditions to meet the baby's sucking needs and avoid breast rejection.

The bottles of the Russian manufacturer "Mir Detstva" are produced under strict control in accordance with the quality standards in force in Russia. They are safe for children and are not inferior in quality to foreign counterparts. The manufacturer offers bottles of standard and ergonomic shape with silicone nipples with a volume of 125 and 250 ml. There are specimens with a wide neck, which facilitates the process of washing the bottle after use. All bottles are decorated with cute children's drawings.

The manufacturer's defect is the lack of a clearly drawn measuring scale. The marks are convex, but merge in color with the bottle. To determine the volume of liquid, you have to strain your eyes and look closely. Many parents complain about the quick failure of the nipples included in the kit and the lids that are inconvenient to use.

  • Colorless scale, which makes it difficult to navigate the volume of the drink in the bottle
  • Low quality nipples and plastic from which the lids are made

Avent natural - the easy combination of bottle feeding and breastfeeding

British manufacturer Philips Avent has been producing baby bottles for over 30 years. The Natural series is designed to help new mothers combine bottle feeding with breastfeeding when they need to supplement their baby. The peculiarity of this bottle is the shape of the nipple, which follows the contours of the breast. To drink from a bottle of Avent natural, the baby has to make an effort and make movements with the tongue, just like when sucking at the breast.

Bottles are produced in 3 versions - 125, 260 and 330 ml. To reduce colic, a double valve is provided that prevents air from entering the stomach. The bottles have a wide mouth, convenient for washing or filling the mixture.

Parental feedback on Avent natural bottles is mostly positive. Although some note an uncomfortable position in the hand when feeding.

  • Breast-moulding nipple to reduce the risk of not breastfeeding in favor of a bottle
  • Variable flow rate that changes with the age of the child
  • wide neck
  • Double anti-colic valve
  • Not suitable for weakened babies, because drinking requires some effort
  • Not everyone is comfortable holding wide bottles in their hand

Bibi bottles

Anti-colic bottles from the Swiss brand "Bibi" have an interesting nipple design that is easy for newborns to grip. Compliance with European standards guarantees high quality and safety. The bottles can be sterilized by steam, microwave or dishwasher. The shape with a "waist" contributes to a comfortable arrangement in the hand.

Of the minuses, a strong flow can be called even when using a pacifier 0+. Some babies may choke with a large amount of incoming fluid.

  • Made of high quality plastic or impact resistant glass
  • They have an anti-colic system in the form of a special valve
  • Ergonomic shape, comfortable for adults and children
  • Strong fluid flow rate from the nipple

Bottle "Nuk First Choice" - imitation of the female breast at an affordable price

Bottles of the German manufacturer Nuk of the First Choice series are designed to help parents combine natural and artificial feeding of the baby. The wide base of the nipple and the beveled tip imitate the female breast so that the baby does not get confused with different feeding methods. Bottles of this brand are produced from polypropylene and glass in several volumes - 120, 150, 240 and 300 ml. Parents can choose from a latex or silicone nipple.

According to customer reviews, these bottles have one weak point - an insufficiently tight fit of the cap leads to leakage of liquid when shaken or in a horizontal position.

  • Excellent German quality
  • The possibility of combining breast and artificial feeding
  • Nipples of different materials and flow rates
  • Weak lid that does not cope with the function of leakage protection

The Italian company Chicco offers parents of a newborn an innovative nipple with a velvety top layer and an inclination to one side. This bottle provides the baby with comfort and ease of feeding. The shape of the pacifier encourages the baby to make sucking movements. According to research conducted by the company in 2016, 96% of children from birth to three months agree to drink from a Natural Feeling bottle.

The disadvantages include the difficulty of emptying the bottle to the end. Because of the beveled nipple, it is almost impossible to tilt the bottle so that the last drops fall into the baby's mouth. Therefore, it is better to dilute the mixture or pour milk with a small margin. Many users complain about the lid being too tight and opening with a lot of effort.

  • Soft, velvety silicone nipple surface
  • Angled tip to encourage suckling
  • The shape of the pacifier is liked by most babies.
  • Inability to feed the baby the entire amount in the bottle
  • Doesn't fit in most thermal containers
  • tight lid

Another manufacturer who tried to repeat the mechanism of sucking from the mother's breast in a bottle was the Japanese "Pigeon". Like its competitors, the Pigeon Peristaltic Plus bottle is anti-colic with a patented nipple valve. A decrease in colic during use was noted in 97% of cases, which was confirmed by scientific tests of the SCCH RAMS in 2013. The nipple has a raised surface that makes it easier for the newborn to grasp it.

The rather high price of the bottle corresponds to its quality. There are practically no negative statements about her. The disadvantages include the absence of a 30 ml mark on the measuring scale and a slight sound that appears during the operation of the anti-colic valve.

  • Mimics the shape of mother's breasts
  • Effective anticolic system
  • Rough nipple surface for a comfortable grip
  • High price
  • Extraneous sounds when using
  • Measuring scale starts at 60 ml

"Tommee Tippee closer to nature" with anti-colic tube and valve system

The next contender for the title of Super Baby Bottle comes from the UK. Manufacturer Tommee Tippee offers a nipple that follows the curve of the breast, its elasticity and movement during feeding, as well as a whole system of valves and tubes to combat air swallowing. The bottle fits comfortably in the hand due to the curves on the sides. There is a temperature sensor that changes color when the drink cools down.

A slight inconvenience is the washing of all the components of the bottle. Another disadvantage is the inability to drink the mixture or milk to the end, about 10-20 ml remains in the lid area.

  • The shape of the nipple is comfortable for the baby, but does not distract from the breast
  • Anti-colic valve system
  • Ergonomic shape
  • Thermal sensor
  • Difficulty washing
  • The need to pour liquid with a margin

"Medela Calma" is a bottle that repeats the process of sucking from the breast as much as possible. In order for the liquid to enter the mouth, the baby must apply the same force to create a vacuum as when breastfeeding. This happens due to a special design - the smart nipple is pulled over a plastic base of several parts, attached to the bottle. As a result, the transition from breast to bottle and vice versa occurs imperceptibly and naturally for the baby.

Despite the complex design, which, moreover, is not easy to rinse, the Medela nipple often gives a strong pressure and the child chokes when feeding. Bottles are produced only in a small volume - 150 ml, which is not suitable for grown-up babies.

  • Breastfeeding simulation system to reduce the risk of breastfeeding
  • Comfortable nipple shape
  • High price
  • narrow neck
  • small volume

The Polish brand Canpol offers its own version of the anti-colic feeding bottle for newborns with a nipple shifted to the edge of the bottle. The design has a special filter, thanks to which the milk or mixture is constantly in the nipple, and the air and foam remain in the bottle. The nipple allows liquid to pass through only when feeding, ensuring the tightness of the product.

It will take a little more time to assemble and wash the Canpol Haberman system than for a simple bottle. This is a small price to pay for getting rid of colic when feeding.

  • Comfortable nipple shape that mimics breasts
  • Anti-colic filter
  • Not very convenient process of washing the pacifier and air filtration system

Dr. Brown's Best Baby Bottle of 2018

The generally recognized leader of our rating is the feeding bottle from the American manufacturer Dr.Brown’s. It was created by a pediatrician to relieve colic in babies. The patented ventilation system prevents air bubbles from entering the liquid by directing them to the bottom of the bottle. Milk and formula do not oxidize, retaining all the benefits and natural taste. Dr. bottles Brown's has earned the approval of neonatologists and parents around the world.

The ventilation system has its drawbacks. If the nipple is twisted, the cap is screwed too tightly, the bottle is horizontal, or the bottle is agitated, liquid will leak through the cap. Please keep this in mind when using the product.

  • Created by a pediatrician
  • Unique ventilation system that prevents fluid from coming into contact with air
  • Drip liquid supply
  • Often leaks when operating conditions are violated
  • The ventilation system is difficult to clean

How to choose a bottle for feeding a newborn?

When choosing a bottle for feeding a newborn baby, we recommend paying attention to certain features of the product:

  • Shape - bottles with a wide neck are more convenient to wash, but especially pot-bellied specimens are not very comfortable to hold in your hands and they may not fit in standard thermal containers and heaters. It is convenient when the bottle has a “waist” or special notches for fingers;
  • Pacifier - it is desirable that the pacifier can be chosen depending on the age of the child. As they grow older, the fluid flow rate should increase. If you want to combine breastfeeding and artificial feeding, then buy bottles with nipples that mimic sucking from the mother's breast. Their shape and behavior facilitate easy transition from bottle feeding to breastfeeding and vice versa;
  • Anti-colic system - when buying, make sure that the selected bottle has anti-colic valves or a ventilation system that prevents babies from swallowing air when feeding. This will reduce the amount of gas in the baby's tummy and minimize the likelihood of colic;
  • Volume - as the baby grows, his need for nutrition increases. If a newborn drinks 100-120 ml per feeding, then by 4 months this figure reaches 180-200 ml. Therefore, it is more profitable to immediately purchase a bottle for feeding a larger volume. But for supplementing with water or diluting drugs, you can choose a smaller instance.

Today, no one will argue about the value of breast milk. After all, it has an optimal composition for feeding the baby and a huge nutritional value. Mother's milk increases the immunity of the crumbs, and besides, it is perfect for the child, because it was created by nature itself. But it often happens that a mother cannot breastfeed her baby only. And formula feeding involves buying a special bottle. However, you should know how to choose the right bottle among all the variety that is available on the market today.

Purpose of the bottle

Most often, a bottle for a newborn is needed in the following cases:

  • the child refuses to breastfeed;
  • mother does not have enough milk;
  • there are contraindications for breastfeeding;
  • Mom has to be away from home often.

But even if the baby is breastfed, the bottle will still be needed in order to give him water, and later juice. But which bottle to choose and how many should there be? Is it worth taking a container with an anti-colic function?

Selection rules

In order not to get lost among the variety of bottles on the market, you should follow simple rules. They consist in next:

materials

The container for feeding is plastic or glass. The glass bottle is heavy and breaks easily, but it can be sterilized several times without harm to the material.

A plastic container can quickly discolor or crack. But at the same time, it is light and conveniently take with you for walks. And you don’t have to worry that the baby will break it when holding it on its own.

When choosing a plastic bottle, you need to pay attention to the composition of the plastic. It should not contain bisphenol A, which is used in the plastic industry. After all, this substance has a toxic effect and can harm the baby.

How many bottles should be

There is no single answer to this question. How many people, so many opinions. But it is generally accepted that you need two bottles - one for milk, the second for water. True, there are such parents who do an excellent job with one container.

But it is still worth approaching this process. rationally, based on how many times the baby eats per night. So, if he wakes up three times a night, you should buy three containers. So mom does not have to go to the kitchen immediately after feeding, wash and sterilize the bottle, and then go to bed.

How effective are anti-colic bottles for newborns?

Almost every major manufacturer of baby products has anti-colic bottles. Most often, this function is performed by a special valve or ventilation system. It is generally accepted that such a function helps to cope with colic in crumbs. Quite often, manufacturers even report positive results from the use of such containers in the testing process. But do kids really need such bottles?

Medicine has not yet established the fact of where they come from. colic and under what conditions they will stop appearing. The anti-colic system in bottles is designed to prevent babies from swallowing air while feeding. After all, it is the ingress of air into the stomach that is considered the most common cause of colic in a child.

True, modern pediatricians do not confirm this. Although they do not exclude the possibility of colic after swallowing air. Of course, no one is interested in the fact that the baby swallows air when eating food. And if he swallowed it, then he will vomit. In this regard, anti-colic bottles perfectly help to get rid of frequent spitting up. So, if your baby often spits up and gains weight poorly, you should buy just such a container for feeding.

Nipple Selection Rules

When choosing a bottle for newborns, special Attention give the nipple, or rather, its shape. It is optimal if it has a physiological form. Today, nipples with a wide base, resembling a mother's breast in shape, are becoming increasingly popular. This nipple helps ease the transition from breastfeeding to artificial feeding.

Most nipples are made from latex or silicone. Each of them has its own advantages. So, the silicone nipple does not smell of anything, it is durable and hypoallergenic. At the same time, it is very easy to care for it, because bacteria do not live on silicone for a long time.

Latex is softer, reminiscent of sensations mother's chest. But he has a number of disadvantages - a possible allergy to latex, cracks often appear, caring for such nipples is more difficult.

The nipple should be selected strictly according to the age of the child. So, for a baby up to three months old, there should be only one hole in it so that it does not choke. And from four to six months - two holes, from 6 months - three to four.

Currently created nipples with interchangeable flow. So the hole in the nipple is presented as a slot, which can be opened depending on how you need it. The speed of the flow of food is marked with numbers. One is the minimum flow, three is the maximum.

How to take care of your bottle and pacifier

The nipple and bottle are the baby's first dishes, and therefore they must be carefully looked after so that bacteria do not develop that can harm the baby's body. Otherwise, the baby may develop infectious diseases. This is most relevant in children under three months.

Main regulations care is quite simple:

How to bottle feed properly

During feeding, the position of the body of the mother and baby should be such that both are comfortable. The best option would be the position lying in the arms of the mother, as with breastfeeding. This helps to develop in the baby a positive perception of the mother and the establishment of a connection between them. During feeding, the moment of communication is taken into account. But be that as it may, the head of the crumbs during feeding must be raised.

Pacifier cuddles to the lower lip to make it easier for the baby to grab it. The baby's tongue should be at the bottom of the nipple. If the nipple is grasped correctly, then the baby's lips reach the wide edge of the nipple and close on it.

Hold the bottle during feeding at an angle of at least 45 degrees and constantly ensure that the nipple is filled with milk. This must be done so that the baby does not swallow air.

Manufacturer's choice

Bottles for newborns are produced by many manufacturers and it is quite easy to get lost in the variety on offer. Each of the feeding bottles has its pros and cons. Therefore, you should listen to advice experienced mothers who know exactly which bottles are best for newborns and from which company.

Nuuk (Germany)

Feeding bottles from this company are considered the best. They have a bright coloring, which is very popular with kids and mothers. Currently, the packaging from this manufacturer has earned the highest rating from moms and experts. The cost of such a bottle varies within 300 rubles.

On sale there are both plastic options and glass. But moms love it plastic: they are ergonomic and light, in addition, the child will not break such a container.

Avent

To date, this brand is considered the most popular. Feeding bottles of this brand are convenient, beautiful, have a wide neck, which makes it easy to fill and wash them. All models of this company are equipped with an anti-colic system. All products for children of this company have passed international testing and are safe for babies.

The bottle of the Naturel class deserves special attention. It has an ergonomic shape and on the nipple there are special petals that prevent it from sticking together and increase flexibility and softness. It has an improved anti-colic system and an innovative double valve. The cost of such a bottle is about 650 rubles.

Dr. browns"

This brand is also very loved by most moms. The bottles are equipped with a special ventilation system that does not allow air to enter the container. The air remains in the top of the container, which helps prevent colic and burping in the baby.

An equally important feature of these bottles is that they help to keep breastfeeding, allowing you to mix it with artificial. This is achieved by dripping milk into the baby's mouth, which mimics breastfeeding. As a result, the baby will not give up the breast, which many mothers are so afraid of, connecting a bottle to feeding the baby.

It is worth noting that the products of this brand are distinguished by a large number sets for the baby. They include teethers, bottles, drinkers, pacifiers, and nipples. Buying all at once is much more profitable than buying separately.

Bottles and other baby care products of this brand are recognized leader in the UK market. All products of this brand are safe and fully comply with all sanitary requirements. Today, Tommee Tippee bottles are the reference work of many people who have given mother and baby the very best.

by the most popular are containers with a reinforced anti-colic mechanism and a food temperature indicator. Before giving the mixture to the child, it is necessary to pay attention to the indicator - if it changes color to red, then you should not give the bottle to the baby - the mixture is too hot.

Bottles of this brand are physiological and ergonomic. The nipples are shaped like a mother's breasts, thereby forming the correct bite in the baby. The petals on the nipple contract and stretch, which allows the baby to suck milk in the right rhythm. With this pacifier, the baby will not refuse breastfeeding.

It is worth noting that choosing a bottle for a baby is not an easy task. Each manufacturer guarantees that its product is the best and the mother does not have to worry about feeding the child. It is very difficult to argue with this, but when choosing a bottle, you should rely on the individual characteristics of each baby.

Nature has taken care of the ideal food for the baby - mother's milk. But there are situations when you have to transfer the child to artificial (lack of milk from the mother) or mixed feeding (insufficient milk from the mother). And then the only way to feed the baby is to offer him a bottle of formula. You can also bottle feed with expressed milk if, for example, your mother is sick or has gone to work. Closer to six months, almost all babies get acquainted with the bottle - because it is so convenient to drink juice, kefir, tea and plain water from it. Therefore, the question “how to choose a feeding bottle” worries all parents.

The right bottle - what is it?

When choosing, remember two main requirements - the bottles must be safe and comfortable. Design and all kinds of decorative elements are nice things, but secondary.

1. Material

Bottles can be made of glass or plastic. Glass ones tolerate a large number of sterilizations well, last longer, but break easily. Plastic bottles weigh less, do not break, and can have a different shape. Plastic ones are especially convenient for walking and on the road, and they are also indispensable when a child learns to drink from a bottle on his own.

2. Shape

The shape of the bottle can be both straight and very intricate. The bottle in the form of a ring is convenient for the baby to hold, but it is not easy to wash it. Therefore, it is better to choose a feeding bottle without excessive bends - it is easier to care for it. When your baby starts trying to hold the bottle himself, opt for ribbed models or ones that taper in the middle.

3. Anti-colic protection

The main trouble with bottle feeding is that the baby swallows air along with the incoming milk, which can provoke colic and spitting up. But today, well-known manufacturers offer bottles with anti-colic protection. A specially designed ventilation system or valve system prevents air bubbles from entering the baby's stomach. Air enters the bottle and gradually replaces the decreasing liquid, but does not mix with it.

4. Pacifier

When choosing a pacifier, it is important to choose the right size and number of holes. If the hole is large, then the baby will suckle too quickly, without effort, and subsequently he may refuse the breast. If the hole is small, then the child will need a lot of effort, he will be tired and possibly malnourished. Therefore, the size of the holes should be chosen taking into account the age of the child - there are recommendations on the bottles for what age they are intended. The number of holes in the nipple may vary depending on the density of the mixture. The rule applies - the thicker the mixture, the more holes.

It is worth paying attention to the shape of the nipple. Teats fitted with anti-vacuum "skirts" are preferred to prevent air being sucked in during feeding.

Nipples can be latex or silicone. It is better to choose silicone - they are stronger, more durable, easier to care for.

5. Volume

For newborns, bottles with a volume of 100 - 125 ml are suitable, for older children - 250 - 260 ml. It is more convenient to use the bottle on which there is a scale in milliliters and grams.

6. Neck size

If your baby is breastfeeding, you can choose a wide-mouth feeding bottle. The nipple in this model copies the mother's nipple, which significantly reduces the risk of subsequent breast rejection. For feeding with instant liquid cereals, such a bottle is also preferable. In addition, these bottles are easier to clean.

Choose a manufacturer

When choosing a bottle, be guided by well-known manufacturers - they have scientific laboratories and invest heavily in the development of safe products. Cheap bottles of unknown brands are good for one thing - a low price.

Today there are three leaders on the market - Dr. Brown's, Phillips

Dr. Brown's

Dr. bottles Brown's are equipped with a unique ventilation system, which was developed by pediatrician Dr. Craig Brown. It allows air to penetrate through the holes on the outer side of the sleeve through the tube into the bottle. During feeding, the liquid is gradually replaced with air, which avoids the formation of a vacuum and excessive pressure. But the ventilation system does not allow the baby to swallow air and helps prevent such common problems as the accumulation of gases in the tummy, colic, and frequent spitting up. Milk flows in a continuous stream, just like when breastfeeding, and babies suckle at their own pace, without stopping or getting nervous.

Since the bottles of Dr. Brown's air does not mix with liquid, this helps to prevent rapid oxidation and destruction of vitamins in both formula and expressed breast milk.

Another interesting offer of the company is bottles with a wide neck. The nipple for such bottles is structurally similar to the nipple of the female breast. This avoids later refusal of breastfeeding due to the so-called "nipple confusion".

Phillips Avent

Phillips AVENT bottles have a one-piece valve at the base of the nipple that lets air into the bottle and prevents the formation of a vacuum in it. At the same time, the child can suck at his own rhythm, as with breastfeeding.

The Philips AVENT silicone nipple follows the shape of the female nipple as closely as possible, which eliminates the problem of “getting used to” the bottle. The nipple retains its shape and does not stick together thanks to the diagonal ribs. Bottle teats have five different milk flow patterns. Flow control allows you to combine bottle feeding and breastfeeding and switch from one mode to another depending on the age, health and individual needs of the baby.

Nuby tilt bottles have a removable ventilated bottom that, in combination with anti-colic nipple valves, prevents vacuum from forming in the bottle and prevents air from entering the mixture.

The 6-Stage Kit gradually teaches your baby to drink from a cup. This includes wide-mouthed bottles that change as the child grows: first they have handles, then a soft drinking spout, which then turns into a drinking straw.

An interesting model of a heat-sensitive bottle equipped with a temperature sensor. It shows the temperature of the mixture - the OK icon means that the temperature is optimal.

Helpful Hints

1. New bottles must be sterilized. If there is no sterilizer, you can boil all the parts for 5-7 minutes.

2. Be sure to get a bottle brush. Don't forget to change it every 3-4 months.

3. Check if the teat holder and cap are securely closing the bottle. With vigorous shaking, the liquid should not leak.

4. Removable handles are sold separately for many bottle models. They will come in handy when the baby shows a desire to hold the bottle on his own.

A A

The world's first baby bottle was patented in 1841. From that moment to the present, it has been actively improved by various specialists, and on the shelves of modern stores you can find a variety of its modifications. As a rule, the purchase of bottles is carried out even before childbirth, so that by the time of discharge from the hospital there is no need for additional "raids" on children's stores and pharmacies.

What bottles to buy, in what quantity, and which brands to look for?

Types of baby bottles for feeding and water - the main criteria for choosing bottles for a child from 0 to a year

In Soviet times, the choice of a bottle did not take much time - the market did not offer a rich assortment. And today the choice of such a seemingly simple subject rests on a whole list of criteria and requirements. What can we say about trademarks, of which there are a huge number on modern "children's" shelves.

What to pay special attention to?

Glass or plastic?

Today, in the production of bottles, they use ...

  • Glass. Pros: the possibility of sterilization, easy care, durability. Disadvantages: inconvenience, heavy weight, risk of breaking the bottle when feeding.
  • Silicone. Pros: imitation of mother's breast in terms of thermal conductivity and elasticity, safety. Disadvantages: long-term sterilization is not recommended.
  • Plastic. Pros: light, comfortable, does not break. Disadvantages: cheap plastic, when warm / hot liquids get into it, can release harmful substances, therefore, when choosing such a bottle, it is recommended to focus on a manufacturer with a good reputation.

What shape to choose?

Modern technologies have provided manufacturers with ample opportunities to create bottles that are really convenient for mothers and babies.

Most popular forms:

  1. Classic. Easy to wash, but uncomfortable to hold the baby.
  2. With a wide throat. Good for formula feeding.
  3. With a narrow throat. Good for water and juices.
  4. Curly. Such bottles are comfortable for the baby's hands, but for the mother this form is a real headache. It is extremely difficult to wash such a bottle.
  5. Drinking bottle. A more adult version of the bottle for toddlers, who are already being taught to drink on their own. The bottle is a container with handles, a sealed lid and a special spout.
  6. Anti-colic. Special modern bottles, which are distinguished by the presence of an air valve that provides pressure control. In such a bottle, the nipple does not stick together, air does not enter the baby's stomach, and food is supplied to him uninterruptedly. The valve can be located on the bottom, on the nipple itself, or as part of the anti-colic device used.

Bottle nipples - selection by shape, material and hole size

Material selection:

  • Silicone. High strength, long service life, easy maintenance.
  • Latex. Low price, fast deformation.
  • Rubber. The presence of rubber taste and smell, rapid loss of shape and properties.

Shape selection:

  1. Spherical classic: the top is rounded, the shape is elongated, the presence of a "skirt" to protect against air intake, a wide base.
  2. Orthodontic: flattened shape, forms the correct bite.
  3. Pulling: imitates the process of sucking, requires effort when sucking. Recommended for mixed feeding.
  4. Anti-colic: protects against gastrointestinal problems and regurgitation.

Choice of hole size

Important: the number and size of holes directly depends on the age of the little one and the type of liquid. The baby should not choke when using the pacifier, but there should not be fatigue from sucking either.

  • For the smallest a little man will have enough nipples with 1 hole, from which 1 drop drips per second, if you turn the bottle upside down.
  • A nipple with several holes is already purchased for a grown little one as soon as you begin to notice that the baby is very tense when sucking, tired and malnourished.
  • Large holes in the nipple- for liquid cereals.

How often do you change nipples and bottles?

  1. latex nipples- once every 2 months.
  2. silicone nipples- once every 3-5 months.
  3. Plastic and silicone bottles- once every 6 months.

What else to keep in mind when choosing a bottle?

  • Completeness. A set with a bottle can contain nipples of different sizes, coasters and lids, as well as removable handles and so on. Pay attention to the cap!
  • Tightness. If you shake the bottle, nothing should unscrew and fall off.
  • Quality. The bottle and nipples should not smell of anything, and the package should contain an inscription about the absence of bisphenol A, etc. Be sure to check for a certificate.
  • Trademark. The choice depends only on the buyer, but for the safety of the baby, it is better to focus on trusted brands and companies with a good reputation.
  • dosage labels. Ideally, if the marks are embossed (convex), because the marks printed on the bottle are erased over time from washing and boiling. Pay attention to the accuracy of the scale (unfortunately, many manufacturers sin in the accuracy of the labels), especially if you plan to feed your child with a mixture.
  • The presence of a temperature scale-indicator. This "option" will allow mom to control the temperature of the liquid in the bottle. This function will be especially useful for a family where the baby often stays with his dad, who does not understand what temperature the liquid in the bottle should actually be.

How many and what kind of feeding and water bottles do you need to buy for the birth of a child - how to care for baby bottles?

Some mothers and fathers fill nightstands with bottles, others buy one at a time and change it only if necessary.

How many bottles does a baby really need?

  • For the little one who just came into the world , a 120 ml bottle will suffice.
  • For an older toddler who already eats more than 120 ml at a time , we need larger bottles - 240 ml each.
  • Formula-fed babies need at least 6 bottles : 180-240 ml for milk and 80-100 ml for water / tea.
  • For babies on natural feeding - 4 bottles, 80-100 ml each for water, juice and "supplementary food".

How to care for feeding bottles - basic rules

The most important thing in caring for bottles is timely sterilization and replacement.

Arguing about the need for sterilization is pointless - it is mandatory for babies up to 1-1.5 years old.

Sterilization methods - choose the most convenient:

  1. Boiling. Pour clean disassembled bottles with water, put on fire, after boiling water, boil over low heat for about 10 minutes. Boiling time for silicone teats is no more than 3 minutes.
  2. Cold processing. We dissolve a special tablet with disinfecting properties in water, lower the bottles for the time set according to the instructions. The method is highly controversial, given the chemical composition of the drug.
  3. Microwave. Simple and convenient: put the washed bottles into a glass container filled with water and, setting the maximum temperature, sterilize the baby dishes in the microwave for several minutes.
  4. Steam. Soft, gentle on dishes and an effective way to disinfect dishes. You can use a conventional double boiler for a few minutes, or lower a colander into a pot of water, and then place the bottles upside down for 3-4 minutes.
  5. Multicooker. No less convenient way than a double boiler. We put a sieve for steaming food into the appliance, put the washed bottles into it, pour water to the bottom, press the “steam” button and turn it off after 5 minutes.
  6. Store sterilizer. This device is designed exclusively for the disinfection of children's dishes. If you have such a device, you do not need to look for other methods of sterilization: just install all parts of the bottles in the device and start the device.

Care rules:

  • Be sure to sterilize the bottles after each use. New bottles must also be disinfected!
  • Before sterilization, it is mandatory to wash the bottles.
  • We change plastic bottles every 6 months, and nipples every month.
  • To wash bottles, we use only safe products: baby soap, soda, mustard, or special ECO products for washing baby dishes.
  • When washing bottles, we use a children's (!) brush, which should also be disinfected periodically. This brush must not be used for other purposes.
  • We dry the bottles after sterilization! Water should not remain at the bottom (bacteria will quickly multiply in it).
