In this article, I will remind you which features of the language should be avoided, since when using them, the completely opposite effect is achieved, and not the one that was at the very beginning. Yet people often resort to this language and consider it harmless, but its use smears the whole message. How to avoid negativity?

Avoiding unnecessary words that reduce the effectiveness of the message

In this article, you will find several categories of useless negative language that prevents your message from being received as well as you hoped. Pay due attention to these examples in order to minimize the likelihood of errors or even get rid of such mistakes in future communication and, thus, learn to speak exclusively in positive language.

Invalid language

Incorrect language contains words and remarks that offend, offend, humiliate, annoy, anger, i.e. cause negative emotional reactions in the listener, regardless of your original intentions.

Foul language and rudeness

I have no doubt that my examples are not needed here. It is unlikely that someone will be especially surprised by an accidentally escaped expletive word. But if you use foul language all the time, the audience will have great doubts about your intelligence and education.

Bullet words

By definition, bullet words are not negative, but often cause negative reactions from the listeners. Below are some common examples of bullet words.

- Always, never and constantly. These words are absolutized concepts. When you use them, there are no exceptions for you, so they are rarely perceived positively by the recipient, but they do a lot of harm.
- "You always make this mistake."
"You never help when I really need it."
- It should, must, must and must. In the context illustrated by the following statements, the words should, should, must, and should be used to express an order.
- "You have to do it now."
- "You are obliged to do it only in this way."
When someone starts giving orders at the workplace, they trigger reactions like “Don't tell me what to do, I know myself!” (You should not resort to such actions, not only at work, but also at home.)

- "I will try to complete the assignment this week."
"Maybe I'll do the assignment this week."
- Promise. An old adage says, "That's what promises are for, to break them." When you have to promise that you will do something, your words indicate doubts and insecurities. If you just did what you said you would not need to promise it.
"I promise I can answer you for sure at the end of the week."

Bullet phrases

These statements do not add any meaning to your message, and sometimes even distract the interlocutor and lead to the fact that he stops taking your words positively. Below are a few bullet phrases and the thoughts that rush through my head when I hear them.
"To be honest." (Have you been honest with me all the way up to this point in the conversation?)
- "Believe me". (But I don’t believe, why would I do this, in the end?)

Mixed messages

Mixed messages are statements that contain contradictions. Usually there are words in the middle of such sentences, but, nevertheless, despite this. The speaker at the beginning of the message is trying to say something nice, for example: “Joe, I know you are in recent times worked very hard, but ... ”.

Usually the word no is followed by criticism, which is the essence of the message. The word, but in the middle of the thought, makes it clear to the listener that everything that has been said before does not count. Better to be straightforward and sincere from the beginning.

Clarifying claims that deny your message

These are the statements that you use at the beginning of the message and, unwittingly, force your interlocutor to disconnect from what you intend to tell him. Here are some examples.

- Just don't take it personally ...
-I don't want to tell you this ...
“I don’t think you will understand this ...

As you can see, such statements tell your interlocutor not to listen to you. They indicate a lack of confidence in your own message or a fear of raising a difficult issue.

If you just need to say an introductory phrase, it is better to say: “I have an important message. Please listen, ”and then get to the heart of the matter.

We answer positively

Review the following examples of responses to requests and requests. After you read the answers that are not positive, think about how you yourself would revise them and turn them into positive ones. how you could add the right dose of honesty, directness and constructiveness to your speech. We are looking for the answer to the question

Request: "What batch is this product from?"

The revised answer does not contain bullet words (“don't know”, “didn't work”) unlike the original. It says what you can do instead of expressing your powerlessness and ignorance.

Dealing with a demanding request

Original answer: “My team will not be able to complete this work in two days, especially since you inform us at the last moment about these changes. This assignment will take at least three days. ”

Revised answer“Given the work that needs to be done with these changes, my team will be able to present you with what you want in three days.”

The initial response sounds like a complaint. Comments such as “will not be able to do this job” and “at the last moment inform us about these changes” will undoubtedly cause irritation on the part of the customer. The revised response expresses the rationale and commitment in a straightforward manner to comply with the request, which is essentially a good way to meet expectations.
