DIY leather goods. Master classes for beginners: stylish jewelry made from genuine leather and fur with your own hands From leather with your own hands from old leather

Modern technologies allow you to create leather patterns of any complexity with your own hands, resulting in real masterpieces from this noble material. The variety of crafts for which leather can be used is striking in its wide range.

Since ancient times, leather has been actively used in handicrafts, giving things practicality, durability, and insulating properties. Making small leather things with your own hands - hairpins, brooches, accessories, sewing leather wallets, business card holders, phone cases is now at the peak of popularity, largely due to the special properties of this material: strength, beautiful appearance, elasticity.

Choosing leather for creativity

In order for handmade leather products to be beautiful and functional, you need to take a responsible approach to choosing the material for handicrafts. Leather can be natural or artificial. The appearance of the craft or product depends on how “rich” the source material looks.

Leather comes in different thicknesses:

  • thick leather looks good in graphic products - cases, belts, etc.;
  • soft leather can be draped, molded, used for brooches, bracelets, accessories, appliqués on clothes, etc.

Suede, nubuck, velor, smooth or textured leather - a wide selection of material textures will help to play up the design of the product in an interesting way.

Nuances of leather sewing

Leather is a specific material that does not forgive mistakes when sewing. Beginners who dream of creating small things, objects, and accessories from leather using patterns must take into account the following rules for working with genuine leather:

  1. Use special tools for work: leather needles, awl, cutting knife, thimble.
  2. Choose strong linen threads.
  3. Check patterns, patterns, templates for accuracy before sewing: each puncture with a needle leaves a noticeable mark on the skin.
  4. Apply the glue to the previously degreased surface of the skin.
  5. Any operation about which there is doubt should be tested on unnecessary flaps.

Viewing photos of the stages of creating interesting leather items shown in our master classes will charge novice craftswomen and professionals working with leather with a positive creative mood. The leather patterns we collect are distinguished by their originality and design of the finished items. Available master classes will give you pleasure from the manufacturing process and the resulting leather products.

Things that are made with your own hands stand apart from the consumer goods that are pouring into the market in tons. That is why products created by painstaking labor in one-piece copies are popular and are quite expensive.

We talked with Nikita Trofimov, who runs a creative workshop for leather goods - TN HandMade. The conversation turned out to be quite interesting and informative.

Maxim: Nikita, tell us briefly about when and how the idea to create and then sell leather goods came about?

Nikita: Initially, this was not a planned business project. The idea came to mind suddenly in 2009, because... I liked these accessories ( wide leather wrist bracelets). Buying them was problematic; as a rule, such things were brought from abroad. I decided to try making it myself and for my friends. Then people I no longer knew started calling and asking about the products. And I realized that this direction is quite popular and exclusive, because... there is no mass supply on the market.

Maxim: That’s right, it’s difficult with wide bracelets, although they are quite popular. Where does the material come from? Is there a manufacturing facility on hand that can provide leather?

Nikita: For 3 years skin. The material was purchased from domestic tanneries. There are no such production facilities in the Vladimir region, so I can’t say that they are “at hand.” I went to neighboring regions to get materials.

Now I am purchasing leather material from Italy to order. This is due to the higher quality of leather compared to domestic leather.

Maxim: It turns out that the products are almost “Italian” :) Is the leather somehow additionally processed or does the product come already “ready-to-use”?

Nikita: The leather comes to me in large rolls. Some are further processed, for example hand-painted in the desired color, while some are used without treatment.

Maxim: Is this processing done by one person? How many people are employed in the workshop? Or are you alone the “workshop”?

Nikita: At first I worked alone and the workshop was in an apartment) now I have 4 people working for me. Everyone is busy with their own business)

Maxim: Did it all start with leather bracelets or watches with a wide belt? Tell us a little about the range that your workshop offers. Watches, bracelets.. what else?

Nikita: At first I only made wide wrist bracelets. Then I made my first watch on a wide strap. It was a Luch watch, which I purchased in a company store when I was in Minsk. Watches with a wide strap are very popular, combining both a leather bracelet and the functionality of a watch. I also make leather belts; I recently started casting buckles to my own design from brass.

In the workshop I also make bags, purses, business card holders, key holders, camera straps, etc. In general, there are a lot of opportunities for development and ideas in this area. There’s not even enough time for everything)

Maxim: So, it turns out that you can make any designer item from leather? Were there any special orders that stood out from the general series?

Nikita: In fact yes. But I don’t take on all the ideas that clients offer. Because I strive for my own style. I prefer to do what I like and what suits my style and view of work. I mostly work on my creative ideas. Let’s say I’m currently working on a special order for a professional musician who plays the harmonica. I am sewing a case for 20 accordions for his performance at an international competition in Germany.

Where can I get money to start my own business? This is exactly the problem that 95% of new entrepreneurs face! In the article, we revealed the most relevant ways to obtain start-up capital for an entrepreneur. We also recommend that you carefully study the results of our experiment in exchange earnings:

Maxim: So did you learn this craft somewhere or did you begin to understand the nuances along the way? Or were there any mentors?

Nikita: I learned everything on my own) gradually mastered technology, learned to sew on a sewing machine. Skills came gradually, and with them the quality and beauty of the products grew.

Maxim: Judging by the photographs, the quality is really high :) And the prices are quite reasonable. As for watches, where exactly do watches come from? Is this some kind of “noname” or purchases from some watch manufacturing company?

Nikita: Some of the watches are original. I buy Luch at the Minsk Watch Factory, this brand is distinguished by good quality and retro style, which is now popular) Copy dials are purchased by “noname”.

Maxim: How is the warranty issue resolved? Have there been cases when the watch was returned due to a breakdown?

Nikita: There is a warranty on the watch mechanism. I always try to resolve such problematic issues in the most beneficial way for the client. Because I’m not chasing quick profits, but I’m working for a good name, so to speak) Cases, of course, happen:(

Maxim: Yes, earning a reputation is quite difficult, but it breaks in an instant. Do you distribute your products only through a social network or are there other channels? Tell our readers where they can read about your products and how to order them. Suddenly, someone decides to give themselves a gift.

Nikita: Currently I trade remotely via social media. VKontakte network, I have an officially registered individual entrepreneur. In the near future I will open my own online store, the site is currently under development.

On the pages of VK I have posted catalogs with available products, it is described in detail how to place an order, about delivery to other cities and guarantees.

Any product can be laser engraved with a memorable inscription or design.

Master Class

Master Class (MK) - this is the transfer of his professional experience by a master (teacher), his consistent, verified actions leading to a predetermined result.

To publish a master class, the work must be original (invented and made by you). If you used someone else's idea, you must indicate the author. (The link to the source should not lead to a site containing sales of goods or services, since links to commercial sites are prohibited according to clause 2.4 of the PS).

Your master class should not completely duplicate the one already available in the Land of Masters. Before publishing, check through the search that there are no similar MKs on the site.

The process should be photographed step by step (see Tips for photographing crafts) or filmed (see how to upload a video).

The order of registration: the first photo is the finished work that is proposed to be completed, the second photo is the materials and tools necessary for the work (or their detailed description), then the stages of MK from the first to the last. The final photo (the result of the work) can repeat the very first one. Photos must be accompanied by clear and competent comments about the process.

If you have already published your MK on another site and you want to also publish it with us, then you need to follow all the rules for designing a MK described above. In other words: in an entry with the MK type, you cannot simply put a photo of the finished product and a link to a master class on another site.

Attention: all master classes in the Land of Masters are checked by site assistants. If the requirements of the Master Class section are not met, the entry type will be changed. If the site's User Agreement is violated, for example, copyright is violated, the entry will be removed from publication.

Algorithm for making a flower:

  • We trace the patterns on the wrong side of the material and carefully cut along the contour with scissors.
  • We give the details a shape so that the flower has a beautiful volume. To do this, prepare a solution of two parts water and one part PVA glue, and then generously coat each element.
  • Squeeze the petals firmly and let the pieces dry until the glue becomes transparent and invisible.
  • From a piece of thicker skin we cut out the pistil and stamens. Many craftswomen use fishing line or thin wire wrapped in tissue paper.
  • We twist the petals with dried glue using a pencil, giving them the desired shape.

Advice!

There are a few simple secrets on how to give leather blanks the desired shape. Use the high temperature principle, use a heated frying pan, a hair dryer, a preheated oven.

  • We assemble all the individual parts into a beautiful flower, securing each part with superglue.

Filigree scrolls of leather

Making filigree leather jewelry takes a little skill. Intricately curled spirals of thin leather cord are the basic element of many trendy jewelry. Curls come in any shape, color and size, with an interesting texture. It all depends on the material used for the cord.

Jewelry with filigree swirls

We suggest making your own original leather jewelry with a twist. To work you will need genuine leather, glue and a flat, smooth surface. Novice craftswomen are wondering how to make jewelry on a budget, but without losing quality and aesthetics. There is a secret: you don’t have to buy leather in sheets, it’s expensive, and besides, it’s a shame to cut it into pieces. There are always several items made of genuine leather in the closet, and in creative shops you can buy scraps of genuine leather.

Let's start the creative process:

  • We form cords from long scraps. Apply glue along the smooth edge of the material, bend it about 5 millimeters wide, and press it with a soft cloth to remove excess glue. After the glue has dried, cut off the edge to create a thin cord.

Important!

The more different cords of different shades and textures, the brighter and more original the decoration will be.

  • Let's start making curl blanks. We twist each lace like a snail and drop a little glue in the middle. Between the turns we insert the end of a flagellum of a different color and texture, twisting it again into a spiral. When adding new ribbons, fasten them with glue and press firmly to disguise the extension site.
  • We continue to increase the cords until we get a curl of the desired diameter and shape. To give the product an unusual look, you can twist the “snails” in different directions. The workpiece must be left for a day until the glue dries completely.

From such curls you can make beautiful pendants, earrings, brooches, decorate headbands and even clothes. By gluing random curls onto a flat cord with a clasp, we get a very stylish bracelet.

How to make jewelry from strips of leather

Chic necklace

To work you will need fabric, fishing line, beads, as well as white leather and fur. On cardboard we draw a pattern in the form of a small heart. We transfer the sketch to the fabric, cut out 16 blanks. Then we transfer the pattern alternately to the skin and then to the fur. You should get eight leather parts and eight fur parts. We process the edges of the leather blanks with fire, adding a little volume. We lay out all the parts, alternating them, and glue a fabric base to each from the back. We string the parts onto two pieces of fishing line of the same length. We decorate the necklace with beads, stones or other beautiful decor. Using this simple technique, you can make jewelry from fur with your own hands, for example, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, complementing the elements with lace or satin ribbons, unusual fittings and other details.

The main advantage of this type of needlework is its versatility, the absence of special skills and technology. When creating stylish jewelry from genuine leather, do not hold back your imagination, experiment by combining various handicraft techniques, complementing the products with the most unexpected decor. This is how exclusive collections of designer products are born, which are in incredible demand among fashionistas.

Leatherworking is an ancient craft

Probably, leather processing can be safely called one of the most ancient crafts on earth. In former times, people made almost everything from such material. To protect their feet, our ancestors made themselves primitive shoes - for this purpose, they simply wrapped their feet with pieces of animal skins, and then secured it all with sinews or leather strips.

Clothes in those prehistoric times were also made exclusively with their own hands from genuine leather. Years and centuries passed, the technique of making leather things gradually improved, and now leather crafts began to resemble genuine works of art.

It is probably impossible to find a people on our planet who would not engage in leatherworking, because in ancient times leather was the most accessible and widespread material. The Slavs, for whom leatherworking was a special tradition, did not lag behind other peoples.

The artistic processing of leather was especially developed in Central Russia and the North. For example, in Torzhok, craftsmen made excellent morocco of different colors, after which they made belts, pouches, wallets and shoes embroidered with gold and silver.

In addition, leather was widely used in book printing, making rich embossed bindings from it, often decorating them with gems and precious metals.

What kind of leather can be used for crafts?

Currently, leather crafts made with your own hands from unnecessary things and small pieces are especially popular - making various trinkets from this magnificent material has become a real hobby for many housewives and their household members.

The genuine leather that is used in our work is not only the skin of animals, but also the skin of reptiles and even fish. There are many different classifications of leather, here are just a few of them:

  • Morocco – made from goat skins, the material is tanned using a vegetable method, which gives the leather a bright color.
  • Suede is usually fat-tanned elk, wild goat, and reindeer skin. This leather is very soft, it is covered with thick pile and does not absorb water well.
  • Velor is made from leather that has some defects on the front surface. Using special grinding, the material is brought to a velvet state.
  • Laika - made from the skins of goats or sheep, this material is very light and thin, most often gloves are sewn from it.
  • Shagreen is a soft leather that is made from goat or sheep skins by vegetable tanning; its distinctive feature is a small relief pattern, very beautiful and delicate.
  • Split leather - this material is made from thick leather, sometimes an artificial pattern is applied to it. This material is not very durable.

Why should a modern woman make leather crafts and where to start?

As for modern people, the word “leather” evokes associations with leather sofas and armchairs, but crafts made from pieces of leather are the last thing that comes to mind. And it’s completely in vain, because this is a very docile and flexible material that can bring a lot of pleasure not only in the process of making leather crafts themselves, but also in the process of decorating your own home with their help.

You can make funny souvenirs from this material and give them to friends or relatives, because what could be better than a gift made with your own hands?

If your child is already tired of plasticine, then you can introduce him to this fun activity - making leather crafts, the photos of which fascinate and encourage action. In addition, the source material, which is not cheap, does not necessarily need to be purchased. Probably every home has unnecessary leather items - old bags, jackets, boots or belts. All this can be carefully ripped apart and cut, and then used in work.

First of all, you need to choose the product you want to make. This could be an exquisite brooch, beads or necklace, hair clip, belt, bracelets, decorative box, interior bottle, funny figures, and much more.

It also looks great on the skin, which is very simple to make - first you need to completely degrease the surface, apply paint, let it dry and simply glue on a suitable motif cut from a napkin. At the end you need to coat the product with varnish. The main thing is not to limit the flight of your own imagination and then everything will work out.
