Basic materials for panels

To master the technique, you will need a substrate, nails and threads. It is not difficult to make a panel of threads and nails with your own hands, the main thing is a little patience and accuracy.

The substrate is a solid canvas into which nails will be driven. The materials can be anything, but plywood, cork, fiberboard, polystyrene are mainly used. The advantage in the property of these materials is that their surface is smooth, they can be coated with paint, varnish, and also tinted.

Square foam pad.
Black acrylic paint.

The principle of building a panel is as follows.

The order of work is the following.

Glue several sheets of paper together and write any word, letter or sentence in three-dimensional letters. Remember that the letters must be thicker so that the final picture looks beautiful. Cut out the word (picture 1).

Prepare the substrate (picture 2).

Place the word on the substrate (picture 3).

Drive carnations around the outline of the letter. They should be located close to each other and at the same distance (picture 4).

Remove paper letters (picture 5).

Prepare threads of such colors so that the shade of one passes into another, like a rainbow (picture 7).

Start pulling the thread from the very top of the first letter (picture 8).

Then take another shade and continue to work with it. So fill the letter with threads of different colors (picture 9).

Gradually fill in all the letters. Remember to choose colors carefully. The selected shades should smoothly flow into one another (pictures 10 and 11).

For felting, special wool is used. When creating paintings, it is laid out in layers and the base (non-woven fabric), forming the desired pattern. When creating paintings from wool, the process takes place in several stages. First, the background, relief is laid out, then smaller and smaller details.

Making the background

To begin with, we take those shades of wool that create the background. We spread them on interlining, trying not to leave voids. It is advisable to make two thin layers. The resulting background is transferred to a foam rubber substrate (5 cm thick or more). Then we take a special needle (for felting). Holding it vertically, we often pierce the laid wool. This is how we ensure that it connects with the base. If you look at reverse side interlining, threads that have come out should be visible.

Then the workpiece is placed on polyethylene (it is larger in size than the picture itself), the wool is wetted soapy water(for 1 liter hot water one tablespoon of grated baby soap) and, in fact, the felting process itself begins. To begin with, wet wool is kneaded with hands (we press down, gradually increasing the pressure). Wet woolen threads interlock with each other with a pile, forming a single surface - this is a process wet felting. The result is felt. Just for the pictures we don't have to woo high density. We stop when the base is sufficiently dense. Wet excess moisture with a terry towel.

Adding details

Now you need to add the details of the picture to the background: trees, flowers, stones, etc. With dry hands (wool sticks to wet ones), we lay out the trunks of trees, bushes, stones. On new details we pass well with a needle, moisten, crush with our hands. Then they use more rigid means - a wooden rolling pin. The wet picture is carefully passed back and forth with a wooden rolling pin.

Last we lay out voluminous small details: flowers, clouds, stones, thin branches, stems, leaves ... To make them voluminous, we use up to eight layers of wool, we make petals from balls, stems from twisted bundles.
